J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I stopped by the store last week to try some new arrivals including the gingham wrap dress, eyelet ruffle top in white, textured lady cardigan in pink/navy, vintage straight jean in rip repair wash, white trouser jeans, Martie gingham pants, heart dress and skirt, Liberty skirt in Pavilion black floral, multi color metallic tweed jacket and brushstroke hammered satin top. Some loves, some passes, happy to answer any questions.

    1. Thanks so much for your excellent reviews.

I was interested in the lady cardigan because of the colors and appreciate seeing it IRL. I still like the colors, but I know I don't actually wear bows.

I like you in the eyelet top.

    2. p banos - thank you! I liked the cardigan but I didn't love the bow either and I know I wouldn't wear it enough. I would be interested to try the green/navy dress but wondering if it shows every lump/bump with how thin the fabric is.

    3. I nearly ordered that dress when I had an extra discount code, but the Mr. talked me out of it. He said it looked 'matronly' which is a comment guaranteed to put me off.

    4. Thank you for the great reviews @Anne! I really like the eyelet top on you, I’m now tempted by it. :)

  2. Thank you for posting. I was wondering how the top fit. Looks very pretty on you.Doesn't look as juvenile as I assumed. Did you by chance see the Jackie sequined Vintage Citrus Cardigan? I was supposed to have received it yesterday. There was an unexpected delay.

    1. Lynn I saw it yesterday. It's pretty. Not my color but the sequins are fun and a little holographic.

    3. Lynn, thanks. I did see it but I didn't love the sequins so I didn't grab it to try and neither color is a color I wear much. I wish I had tuned in that others were interested in it or I would have tried it on. I agree w Suz that the sequins looked a little iridescent - not as subdued if I compare to the website photo.

    4. Anne, Thank you. Interesting assessment from both you and Suz. I have a feeling this will be headed north later today. Too bad. I was looking forward to a nice yellow with some bling. Oh well.

    5. It is definitely yellow with bling. It's a softer yellow. I don't recall which is your preferrred yellow. I just looked at the online pic and the sequins were def more holographic/iridescent (both are accurate!) than it appears on my screen.

    6. That’s disappointing about the sequins. I’m not a sequins person to begin with and i really hate iridescence (can’t wear opals). I’ll check it out tonight - plan to stop by Brookfield for the first time since they stopped being a concept store.

    7. I saw the sequin Jackie IRL and I’m removing from my wishlist. I didn’t realize it’s a cotton Jackie - I thought it was merino wool. Cotton Jackies tend to warp in shape for me; I stay away. The iridescence of the sequins on the yellow one is too much for me - too disco for my taste. The sequins on the coral one is more suited to me - darker and not iridescent - but I have no use for any coral in my wardrobe. I was meh about the rest of the rollout except the Liberty shirtdress - cotton, pockets and lined! The other item I was interested in was the green striped knit dress, which Brookfield didn’t have. I will wishlist the Liberty dress and that’ll be it for me from this rollout.

  3. I have to report on my recent Poshmark purchase. I bought COLLECTION DRAPED PANT IN ITALIAN WOOL
    item 05846
In ivory. They were supposedly NWT. Tag was from factory butt others here said they've seen collection items there.
Seller didn't respond to my questions so I purchased at asking price. Sadly the pants had yellowed significantly inside the lining and the waistband. There was definitely signs of wear. I reached out to posh Mark customer service and posted pictures. The seller responded that she had kept The pants in a Ziploc bag. This explains the yellowing. Regarding the fit I could see them working better in a darker color. I could have made the ivory work with the right shirt but fortunately I was able to return them because of the yellowing.

    1. Suz, glad you were able to return the pants. I've done more selling than buying on Poshmark but mostly have done ok with items I've purchased but sometimes I've been underwhelmed when I see what I've purchased. Ebay seems to still be a better bet for me buying wise. PM must be getting better with returns - the one item I tried to return last year was denied (they claimed the item was black but it was navy) so I was stuck...it was inexpensive but not the point.

    2. Sorry the pants did not work out, but in a way you were fortunate that there was something wrong? They were an unusual style!

    3. I should have known when seller didn't respond to two low offers nor a question under the item. She claims she was busy and when she stored the item in a ziplock it was perfect so she put it in the mailer without checking. I'm sorry I go over every item before shipping, what are we talking about two minutes? Yes I'm glad I was able to return. Regarding the fit, I love drop crotch pants but it did kind Of give a diaper effect. Before I knew I could return I steamed inside and out (found my professional steamer which was in the basement for twelve years unused) and the front laid a bit better. Had I paid a little less and knew they were worn I probably would have kept but I felt like it wasn't an accurate description.
Had I bought something navy that I was told was black I would have disputed the charge in my credit card. 😂

    4. Oh the seller had excellent ratings. Anyway, lesson not to buy ivory either. The yellowing in the lining was really kind of yuck.

    5. @Suz, her mistake was she stores items in or under plastic which includes dry cleaning plastic bags which is a no no. Living in any climate unless items are either wrapped in acid free tissue paper or put in an all cotton garment bag will yellow over time. These are climate stains. Happens with silk too. I had this happen with an ivory background Chanel Silk scarf years ago and took it to a specialty dry cleaner who was able to remove the yellow stain. Awful how someone would tell you one thing and you received the opposite.

  4. Oh wow. I ordered 4 items once from Poshmark and only one was perfect. I was able to return them. Very leery of this reseller. Happy you were able to return them. I just don’t get it with some of these sellers, not responding, inaccurate descriptions etc.

  5. Poshmark is a very good place to shop but pick your sellers carefully. You can check out the ratings for each seller and you can send stuff back if you have a good reason. I have some great finds from Poshmark. Highly recommend.

  6. "Kind of give a diaper effect" This makes me giggle. You're right. I check everything and even if I know the answer, I usually wind up finding and going over the garment I'm selling once again when asked.
Anne, you are an easier going person than I am! I would have disputed that charge as well.

  7. BofF is reporting tonight that J Crew has hired Chris Benz as the new head of women’s design. Formerly Creative Director at Bill Blass since 2015. Hopefully a good move. We all know how the guy who sold throw pillows online worked out.

    1. Thanks for sharing. In reading the article I’m hopeful because of his previous J Crew experience and work with Jenna. If he can achieve what he describes in the following, it’s gonna be an answered prayer.

“J.Crew is where I started my career and I have always loved the inspired mix of things – color and pattern, texture and quality – that defines it. I look forward to innovating on the brand’s essential classics to create an eclectic American style that is both polished and unique, and revives J.Crew as a destination where everyone can find something special.”

    2. Hmmm... maybe something to look forward to in J Crews saga and possibly a good move. Here’s a little excerpt about him from Wikipedia:

Chris Benz is an American fashion designer. He gained early recognition as a recipient of a CFDA scholarship[1] while attending Parsons School of Design. Benz interned with Marc Jacobs in college, then worked at J.Crew, before launching his own collection in 2007.[2] His signatures include use of color, texture and prints, as well as subversion of traditional dressmaking codes and techniques. His collection is available in stores throughout United States, Canada, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. He was inducted into the CFDA in 2009.[3]

    3. Essential classics, color and prints- sign me up! Am I correct in remembering that the past few seasons they haven't had a head of design and have just been designing by committee? Or was that just at the business leadership level when they laid off some execs? Anyway, a clear new creative direction (other than, let's make shapeless cropped things since that seems to go okay at Madewell sometimes) would be great to see!

    4. Cautiously hopeful ! He sounds much better than the other potential candidates

    5. @fleurdelys, same here. Interesting Johanna Uurasjarvi didn’t last long (6 months) Wonder what’s up next for her. I’m probably one of a few wondering if Angela Ahrendts is in private talks with Jcrew. Not a word other than she’s leaving Apple in April. She turned Burberry around, I never believed she was a good fit with Apple and grossly overpaid, but with her retail track record with Burberry I could see a possible marriage between her and Jcrew.

    6. I’m not surprised Johanna left if Brett left. She was hired right after he arrived. You know these things in the c-suite - you usually leave when the person who hired you also leaves, because whatever vision they hired you to fulfill leaves with them. I’m excited about Chris Benz: I had no idea he started at JC. I have (possibly had - May have donated when I gained weight) a CB butterfly print dress I bought at one of his sample sales many years ago probably 1-2 years after he started his own label. I remember being at that sample sale and wanting to buy everything and really having to restrain myself. The pieces were well made, has a subversive preppy vibe, but in happy colors and fun prints. I hope he revives some of those silhouettes and brings some of that energy to JC!

    7. Chris Benz is AMAZING! And he actually loves and uses color! This is the most hopeful I've felt about J. Crew.

    8. He posted some of his Resort 2012 collection on instagram here- I think I can get behind this!

    9. @kel @lynn @cheritheberry I checked out his insta: wow! I would say that’s a great fit, reminds me of J Crew as it used to be!

    10. Someone who paints a parlor ceiling yellow has my heart. I see from some of his previous designs that he plays around with shapes and I,like the bright palette. I don't wear tons of colors but I do like pops of color.

    11. Chris Benz is "Head of Women's Design". Maybe Johanna Uurasjarvi is staying on? She was "Chief Design Officer".

    12. This sounds like good news for Jcrew and for us! An article mentioned that Uurasjarvi‘s designs will be out in the fall so does that mean we won’t see Chris’s work until next spring? I don’t want to wait that long!

    13. Sorry to confuse the issue in my post above. Johanna is leaving

  9. I received the Sorrento graphic sweatshirt in canary yellow. The color is very pretty and makes me long for spring! I ordered my larger shirt sz and it fits well, if you wanted an oversized look I’d size up. It’s soft and while I wish the ships wheel was a little smaller I’m still happy with it. @Lynn, I agree that it’s a beautiful yellow, makes you happy just looking at it.

    1. @jan, nice to hear you like it and agree about the ship’s wheel. I just received some previews for March there is more yellow coming out however I viewing them it’s a different yellow once again. There is some type of sweater looks more gold toned and they have the Vintage Citrus cashmere crew neck paired with a Ratti Jacquard pattern skirt which looks interesting. The shade of yellow is difficult to distinguish as to what the actual color is.

    2. Thank you for the preview, Lynn! I’m looking forward to more spring items rolling out.

  10. Sorry I was unable to post them Jan. Would like to mention I received the Liberty Flora Bell popover blouse. Beautiful shade of blue and initially my husband thought it was silk given it has a slight sheen. I wore it out to dinner last night with a pair of the wide leg ivory cropped Point Sur pants and a pair of GG Superstar Pink glitter sneakers. The blouse runs tts but the sleeves are short and I had to roll them up. (long slender arms) There is a slight high low to it front 24” in the from and barely 26” in the back for a medium. ( I needed the M because I’m a 34DD but slim. This top is slightly different as it is more of a straight cut and not oversized as I found the other Liberty popover tops to be. There were lots of compliments for the blouse. I wouldn’t mind seeing this with a nice Canary yellow background with some colors that would compliment the yellow. We can dream can’t we:)

    2. p banos, you’re too funny! In the meantime, I hope the price gets knocked down a little more as I might even purchase a second one. I paid $39.00 for this one. I’ll make sure that when it hits $19.99 to let you know:)
