JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Big sale update, almost 1400 items but website keeps crashing. Some old popbacks to be found!

    1. After someone got a Lady Day coat in error, There’s even more incentive to pounce on all non final-sale oldies! I hope everything I ordered ships!

  3. It was hard with all the website crashes (page blanking out on quickviewing new items, error messages, not being able to add things to my wishlist, etc.) but I placed 2 big orders. One was for popbacks (several items with style numbers starting with F, a couple all numeric!), and one was for new to new-ish things. I got the cobalt tweed dress, the Liberty flats with the scarf tie, and sale-on-sale Lucie pumps and the Liberty field jacket. I was tempted to use my 25% off code from the holiday website crashes but since it doesn’t expire for 2 months, I held off for now. I probably have one more order in my future for the coral sequin Jackie (page won’t load at all) and the gingham pointed toe Mary Janes (promo doesn’t apply even though it’s not excluded in the cart and the banner shows up in search and on the item page). Will have to contact customer service if it’s not ironed out online in the morning...I should probably take it as a sign I’ve done enough shopping and save my energy and money!

  4. @JulieTaylor, Julie just received notification from Nordstrom Rack that the Liberty Floral Blouse Papaya which I ordered has been cancelled. Disappointed because I agreed to notify you whether or not I liked it. Sorry.

    1. Oh no! That's ok, thank you so much for letting me know. Now I can stop obsessively checking Nord Rack site. :D (though still looking for long lost JC sale items! ha)

  7. Styling the cocoon coat, tartan plaid shirt, and Thermolite jeans on the blog today. Coat runs big, so I sized down. I found the shirt and jeans to run TTS.

  8. I can see new arrivals if I use Firefox. Wow that's a lot of gingham even for a hard core gingham lover like me. Wish the promo was a little better today. Oh well, I can wait. :)

  9. I like some of the new arrivals and will probably make a purchase, but I still feel that the same shapes are being repeated way too often. Some cute prints and colors, sure, but where's the creative silhouettes and the little extra twists? Work remains to be done.

    1. Yeah, lots of deja vu (deja 'Crew? I know that's been said around here) with these items. Nothing for me in the new arrivals - I don't love the scale of the larger gingham and I think they've done eyelet (and gingham) better in previous years, like the gingham moto jacket and gingham flats in spring '16, and the merino sweaters with the eyelet front panel from a few years earlier.

Honestly, my favorite look was the pic of the girl in the crewcuts spring party layout with the camel cashmere sweater, white overalls and blush sneakers - think I'm going to steal that for spring with white jeans.

    2. agreed - and I always love seeing different styling of classic colors/pieces - love the camel/white/pink idea as well!! thanks for pointing that out

    3. I hear you, Panda! Do we really need more funnelneck blouses? I absolutely love the fabric of funnelneck top in eyelet, but I won’t ever buy that style. In a more classic style I’d probably buy 2-3 colours, as I generally can’t resist eyelet. And they’re hitting the gingham pretty hard again with this rollout. As previously mentioned, I love gingham, but have quite a few pieces from the previous 2 years and am ready for some other options. My gingham bikini isn’t worn out quite yet! Where are the beautiful prints? It’s nice to see a few Liberty pieces, but there are so many other ways to do florals, and those beautiful “mid-century” prints that they used to do for pencil skirts and cardis.

    4. Yeah, the funnelneck keeps coming around like a bad penny. They had what, solids, stripes, chambray, multiple tartans, and now eyelet? If the style doesn't work for you (or you don't like it), you're not going to buy it period - but if it does and you like it, how many iterations can you see owning? It's such a distinctive shape. I liked the simple boatneck shape they did in the chambray top a couple of years ago in terms of a top shape that's not a button-down (or popover - even those aren't as versatile).

      Delete
    5. I like the shape but found the eyelet version difficult to style. I prefer to tuck a little in the front and it's too thick.

    6. I struggled with the funnel neck in eyelet - I tried so many sizes - finally I put on a 4Tall and it worked. I have a black one and wear it over white pants so the white shows through the eyelet.

That worked so well I ended up getting two more funnel necks on the super-clearance sales. The wide red/white stripe and the chambray. I haven't worn the chambray yet since this is not a shirt you can layer for winter (I tried and gave up). I wore the red/white with a pair of black kick crop trousers and black heels before it got too cold. The proportions of the long shirt and cropped pants worked surprisingly well. I can see wearing these shirts over bermuda shorts when it warms up.

I agree it's not a shape for everyone, and I'm not going to get another one. But the answer is you can own three if you get them all on clearance!

    7. Lol, I have three also, the red and white which I find difficult to wear, the black and white stripe which is a smaller scale I prefer, and the red tartan from the holiday which I'll try to wear next holiday.

  11. Not much for me in the new arrivals (good because I need nothing!) but I did wishlist the tiered midi skirt and ruffled top in Liberty Pavilion black floral. It’s a nice set for summer.

Advice welcome and appreciated: I’ve been working on growing out my blonde hair color for several months. I decided to stop marinating my scalp in chemicals every few weeks and just learn to embrace the gray (well...salt and pepper). Yesterday I went in and had all the remaining blond chopped off. It’s a big change. I went from hair below my shoulders to only about 3 inches long. Hair, wardrobe and accessory styling tips much appreciated as I really prefer to avoid looking elderly and/or male, lol.

    1. Hi Jeanne - one of the old school JCAs (egyptomaniac) has been rocking a pixie cut for the past few years, looks great, and posts a lot of outfit pics. Her IG handle is historically_fashionable. I also followed The Pixie Cut Series at Unspeakable Visions blog when I was wearing mine and growing it out. Lots of pics and info. : )

  12. I am stopping in tonight to see the new collection and return most of my impulse order from Monday. The wide leg trouser jeans in Tahoe wash were tragic on me - the lighter wash and the cut did nothing for my midsection. I'll stick with the dark wash bootcut Hudsons I bought last week. The point sur retro boy jean didn't fit and the wash was meh. I need a bigger size in the puff sleeve cotton top - I ordered a 6 and it is a smidge small so I'll swap that for an 8 (so I'd say it runs a little small or I'm just settling in to more of a 6/8 in tops rather than a 4/6.

The merino sweater stripe skirt is likely a return as well - I didn't love it - I went with a medium which was right (8 on bottom) and it's lined which is really nice but it was just ok. Maybe I need to play around with styling or it just needs to be a better price.

Re: the rollout - nothing is a must have at this point. A LOT of gingham imo - I am good with a piece here or there but it's not personally something I wear a lot of. I agree on the shoes - I'm over the bow slides - how about some Liberty print heels? I do love the liberty prints but would like to see more tops in a style other than a button down. We'll see what my store has tonight.

  13. Definitely nothing I need in new arrivals. I agree with silver lining I think who posted above about the scale of the gingham. I like the mix of scales but with gingham it can look really off in the wrong scale.
One thing I have to say...I have a microgingham Rhodes blazer I got about two years ago. I can't style it. I feel like it looks like an old man jacket. However seeing the navy gingham with a little scarf or bandana makes me think I should just keep it simple. Maybe I'll try it again since it hasn't sold and I actually paid too much for it. Generally I prefer a smaller scale but in this jacket it is a little too small. I have several silk scarves and bandanas that will work so fingers crossed this becomes something I will actually wear.

Slightly OT I went to Rack to return all the leather jackets and although I didn't find shoes or ankle boots for my daughter I did find awesome Joie drop crotch linen cargo pants, black, size 0, mixed in with the size 4s. I love this style and even though they cost more than I would usually spend on clearance pants I have seen them for minimum triple the price in my quick search online. Considering how versatile they are I'll probably live in them this summer.

    1. How would the Rhodes blazer look with a bright red t-shirt underneath?

I'm going to visit the Rack in Rockaway to return my jacket. Hopefully I will not find anything to buy there! Then I'll go over to the mall to do my Crew return of the nos-so-full-length Point Sur wide leg pants. I nearly ordered the tie-neck short sleeve cashmere sweater today, but held off. If it had been the navy or even the grey with the contrasting tie I'd have done it. But I already have a silk blouse in the same color.

I think I like the pink gingham trench coat. Ok, I'm certainly not buying it, but I would wear it.

    2. P banos, the colors in the Rhodes microgingham are weird. It's a really, really dark burgundy and navy. It doesn't quite go with black but it looks black. I don't really like bright red t shirts for some reason. But I put all my thin silk scarves next to it and one from Madewell that's a deep slate gray with light blue, navy and red small flowers actually coordinates nicely. Hopefully I can make this work with a white/ivory tank or tee and jeans or even shorts

  14. Oh boy. My eyes. Season after season, who has been allowed to churn out these pieces that even the models, some of whom have walked runways, can't sell?

-H7572 will pucker and grimace regardless of how much ironing is dedicated to the tiny edges of those flowers. 3 hours of ironing and you are still a quarter way through those darned daisies on the front!! Netflix and ironing! Woo! Wait, did that flower that was just ironed re-pucker? Back to square 1.
-L1777 will be loose thread city. Those threads will stick out in every direction and your OCD will be on fire. Get thee to a pair of scissors!
-L2718 is red buffalo plaid's cousin who missed her flight to the holiday 2018 roll-out. Thank god she didn't bring a month-old yule log.
-L0548 could have been great if not for that vertical stripe along the sleeves. The side profiles of my sleeves do not want resemble the flag of a new Scandinavian country.
-L1982 Rubs chin... This is the deconstruction art of a funnelcake, masterfully rendered on poly.

Gosh I sound angry. I swear I am just amused and sad. :'D

    1. @Namora, I have the funnel shirt in eyelet from last year and really like it. I've had no trouble with washing or ironing, but I do not put my blouses in the dryer or let them sit in the washer. The style is not for everyone, I'm sure, but it works well for me.

      Delete
    2. Ahah! Thanks for the tip p banos! So air drying the eyelet blouse might alleviate the issue of puckering! I put mine in the dryer and it came out looking very sad. 😂

      Delete
    3. Yes, shake it out well from the washer, and tug out the sleeves and hem, hang dry then iron when just a little damp. You could put in the dryer with nothing else for 2-3 minutes then hang to dry, sometimes that takes out wrinkles.

    4. I appreciate the wry commentary :)

  15. I like a lot of the new arrivals but nothing that I just have to have. In my cart are the liberty flats and the lilac eyelet top. Both would be pretty for spring. There’s a top coming out at Kate Spade that might get my money instead (a daisy lace top) so we’ll see. I haven’t bought anything (I should say keep - I bought a few things but returned everything) since thanksgiving. It’s been a nice break. My energy is focused on designing our new house and shopping my closet. But I still love j crew even when it’s bad. It’s like pizza.

  16. NSF fail. Found the Princess skirt in the size I wanted to exchange for, and also bought the heather honey colorway. And there's more. The black denim jacket I've been wanting (I have duplicates of the skirt and wear every few days), *and* some shorts to make up the $200 minimum, though I'm hopeful they'll actually work. So, nothing to feel proud of this month ;)

I was late to the game today and didn't realize there was a sale update until a couple hours ago. Hope you all saw some fun things!

  17. Bardot was the one who originally made gingham famous if anyone remembers. She got married in a pink dress, she wore tons of gingham in skirt, pants, tops , dresses. Always looked adorable but then I think it wasn’t the gingham her admirers were looking at:) She always made gingham look sexy and so feminine. I certainly could never pull that off now or before😂
