Product Review: Whitney Long Dress {sigh, pretty!}

Solid Silk Chiffon Whitney Long Dress

Item 11429
Regular: $325.00

After seeing this dress online, I fell in love. I thought it was so pretty, in both the solid and printed version (click here), in its simple elegance.

"Thanks!" to Anon at 11:16 PM (in this post) who shared with us her great review.

I looked around to see if anyone else had purchased this dress yet to no avail. I ordered this dress in black in the hopes of wearing it to a semi-formal masquerade ball for Mardi Gras. I paid full price and the dress arrived folded on a plastic hanger, wrapped in a plastic bag and shoved in the box. I can overlook packaging but for 325.00 I would at least like it wrapped nicely in tissue.

Anyhoo this dress is a hot mess, it hangs like dish rag and is not as full as it appears on J Crew. The chiffon has an odd smell and texture, and the dress drapes strangely. Perhaps if I sent it to a dry cleaner the drape could be improved, and I would not attempt to iron this dress myself.

I am 5'10 and ordered a size 8, it fits true to size, however the bust area is small and the dress is fitted with an interior strap for support in the back, but no boning or support underneath. Unless you are very small chested this dress will not work. I am a 34 C, and the extra interior strap makes it impossible to wear another type of strapless bra.

The length of this dress does not work for me, not long enough for heels, too long for flats. This dress is going back to J Crew ASAP.

I would not buy this dress on final clearance with 20% off and free shipping. It looks cheap and I am truly disappointed that J Crew is trying to pass this off as "stunning", the only thing stunned right now is my credit card.

"Thanks!" again to Anon at 11:16 PM (in this post) for her great review! I appreciate her honesty about how the dress didn't meet expectations and the reasons why. I think chiffon is a tricky fabric- sometimes the item of chiffon drapes beautifully, other times it looks awful.

What are your thoughts on the Whitney Long Dress? Are you considering or already have purchased this dress (in either the solid or print version)? Have you seen this dress in person? If so, please share with us your reviews too! :)

  1. Is this dress in stores? I would like to see it in person to decide if I still like it. The reviewer has more height and it sounds like the length would work very well for me. I am also small on top. I am going to order the casual Grecian dress and I hope its at least long enough for flats.

  2. for me this is yet another example of our beloved J. Crew going down the tubes. Poor quality garments that last one season combined with laughable price tags will only result in a loyal customer base eventually abandoning ship.

  3. Oh, too bad! I thought ti seemed like a really pretty dress, too. But I guess at 5'3", I'd probably be swimming in it!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm so bummed to hear that this dress is such a let-down! I was coveting the yellow printed version, but hadn't made the leap because of the steep price...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Aw! I was really excited about that dress. I love the way it looks on a model and I love chiffon. I can totally see how it could look cheap though. I had fears it would. Too bad.
Thanks for the review! I hope to hear other people's opinions on the dress as well.

  6. It's a disappointment for me as well. I was going to spring for the yellow version for a cruise. Bummer...

  7. Thanks for the review, and my condolences. I HATE it when a coveted item is such a letdown. Here's to finding a fab replacement!

  8. Thanks for the review, and sorry about your experience :( How disappointing!

  9. What disappointing news! It's so frustrating when items are just NOT what they appear to be online...I appreciate you taking the time to review it, though! Thank you!

  10. This is a surprise. What a bummer. I am in love with the printed, aqua version. I would have considered it after a [substantial] price drop. I probably still would, just to see it in real life! But you know, as much as I love maxis, I find it is not always the most wearable look.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow this makes me sad. I too wanted the yellow version, but at 5"11 and a 34 C, I will be removing this from my mental wish list. There go my imaginary picnics in the Caribbean and my strolls through crowed markets in Morocco. Am I the only one that imagines detailed, slightly unrealistic, places to wear JC clothes? If anyone has any other suggestions for a semi-dressy summer dress for tall girls, please share.

  12. I'm confused. Just because this woman doesn't like it, doesn't mean everyone is not going to like. Has anyone even tried it on or seen it? This is just one opinion!

  13. Penny, I have seen really pretty maxi-dresses at many other retailers such as BR, Old Navy, and I even picked up a really pretty one at TJ Maxx last month for only $15. There are a lot of options out there right now, and the prices are much better than J.Crew, too. :)

I doubt that my J.Crew gets the Whitney dress in, but I would really like to see it in person. I was actually able to see the long Sea Glass gown IRL a couple months ago and would have purchased it had it been my size. It was absolutely gorgeous.

  14. Ok, the model's visible bikini tan line is bothering me... they couldn't touch that up with bronzer or afterward in photoshop?

I like the top of this dress, but not the long, flowy bottom. Maybe if it were tea length and fuller (more 50s inspired instead of Grecian?), it would work.

  15. shorter would work *for me*, I meant to say. I'm not a fan of the maxi dress... but taller ladies, have fun! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm tall (5'11"), boyish figure (a.k.a. totally flat chested) and long maxi dresses bring back memories of maternity wear to me.
Agreed, tan lines on the model pretty cheesy

    ReplyDelete
  17. Just to add to what FFM was saying, I also saw a pretty maxi dress at the GAP the last time I was there. I *think* it was in the $50-60 range.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Totally off topic but Gwen, if you're out there - the high waisted denim pencil skirt you've been looking for in an 8 is online now!

    ReplyDelete
  19. So my order with the Witney dress in yellow today. The chiffon is airy and light, the yellow is neutrilized by the cream colored lining. The dress fits more like a maternity dress unless skinny as a model. I got size 8 and it is true to size.

    ReplyDelete
  20. totally unrelated, but has anyone won any of the daily prizes in the J Crew honeymoon giveaway? I would be so interested to know this!

    ReplyDelete
  21. If you have a larger chest, good luck w/fitting into J Crew dresses...at least the more formal ones. They seem to cut them for a tall, lean figure. I agree w/FFM & others about there being many maxi options to choose from at far more attractive price points.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Totally off topic;
Alright, guys, I know I might be opening another can of warms, but just could not resist. One certain known person from another certain known blog is claiming on Twitter she hails from SF , CA. So either: 1) she moved from PA, or 2) she is slowly erasing all the references that could link her to the past scandal. I doubt she moved. Her blog is like an eyesore. I am trying NOT to notice it, but guilty of occasional sneaking and checking what she is up to. It's almost like obsessing with Octomom. Boy, I need therapy!:))

  23. Hi all I am the original reviewer on the Whitney. And I too was so disappointed, I had the same visions of the dress as Penny mentioned. I really wanted to love this dress. When I returned the dress to the J Crew store the associate had the same reaction....I hope the dress works for others, it just did not work for me. Another topic, I do have the long Grecian jersey dress and it is adorable. It is long enough and can go either way flip flops or heels. And the price is right. I also just picked up 4 maxi dresses at Old Navy for dirt cheap. Totally cute and pretty well made for Old Navy. But for 29.00 dollars they will be cute summer staples. The sizing on the Old Navy dresses are all over the place for each style, so make sure you try them on. Some styles I took a small, the spaghetti strap long cotton with adjustable straps and a large in the tie front convertible long dress, similar to the short one in J Crew item # 12608E. Typically I do not shop Old Navy, so I was pleasantly surprised. 4 dresses 124.00!!

On a final note I love J Crew and it hurt my heart to write a bad review.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anon 11:13am are you taller than 5'6"? Does the dress give small busted women enough support? I am definitely going to try this dress out for myself but I do want to hear other irl reviews. I want two maxi's for two trips in the summer. I need to find something this month. Its hard to find them long enough for flats and I'm only 5'7 1/2.

Penny your post about daydreaming is funny. I think JCrew catalogs makes you go into dreamy travel and evening out on the town fun mode.

    ReplyDelete
  25. New Haven Mom how tall are you and what size JC do you wear in dresses. I hope I'm not being to personal. I really want to know because I am ordering the Grecian dress in brown and the one you reviewed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anon...Mom!!..not me. The Grecian I have is brown and it is a medium. I am 5"10, normally I order an 8-10 in J Crew dresses. I have the Melanie silk slub in a 10 and it is fine I will have it taken in around the hips. My problem is "boobage" anything slightly fitted in the chest area I order up. The Grecian is a great fit if anything it runs big, the medium is perhaps a little big, but I could not have gone to a small. If you are on the fence order down. The length is perfect for me, with flip flops it almost floor skimming with heels it is just right. I really like the Grecian. Just order it...:)

  27. Could someone possibly fill some of us newbies in on the story of the other blog? It comes up on Google before this one, so some others--like me--may be finding it before landing, happily, here. TIA.

  28. So sad that the dress didn't work out for you! I have had that happen a couple times and it really stinks. Thanks for the review!

  29. What to wear in 50 degree weather?! I'm going to be taking a two day trip to Paris and it's supposed to be 50... That's an awkward temperature for me! Winter coat or just long sleeve tee and jacket?
And must wear pants or jersey dress with tights and coat?
What is everyone's more experienced opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Help please, I always run cold, so I find that J. Crew's cashmere works well with the 50 degree temperatures. A cashmere tee under a jean jacket would be cute.

    ReplyDelete
  31. To Anon at 11:16 with the review: Thank you for my laugh this morning - "hot mess" LOL! I'm not a candidate for the dress at all, but I enjoyed your review :)!

Help Please!: I'm thinking layering is a good idea..maybe a trench with a sweater or cashmere hoodie (cashmere is great for travel because it's so lightweight, but warm). Years ago, when I went to Paris, there were a ton of "poodle bombs" everywhere..I guess this has changed recently, but I felt much more comfortable in pants and flats that allowed me to sidestep the yuck.

I went into the store this morning and fell in love with the "His Derby-Stripe Shirt"...it's huge (I'm normally an 8 or 10P and the XS fit me well). It would look fun with rolled khakis or shorts for the summer. There was a shirt that looked similar to the Liberty Art fabric shirt, but with almost a diamond check-pattern (the placket had the same metallic trim. Man, was that shirt thin! I tried it to check on size, because I'm considering ordering the Liberty Art shirt, but is the Liberty Art fabric really that thin?!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, I'm almost interested in the back story with the other blog as well...

I live in Europe and it has been in the low 50s a lot here. I find most people are still wearing winter coats esp. on cloudy days. Even today with sunshine winter coats were still worn mainly. Hope that helps...

  35. I am always cold in Paris, except in the very hottest weather. I would recommend winter clothes in layers, as others have, and echo the comment about pants/comfortable shoes as well. Of course, not having the right clothes gives a great excuse to go shopping! Have a great trip!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thank you so much everyone!
Not quite what I wanted to hear, I am tired of heavy winter coats, but I definitely don't want to be cold, so I am bringing it anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Advice on what to wear in Paris. Daytime pants, no jeans and flats. I do not think a heavy winter coat is necessary this time of year. A cashmere turtleneck and trench or blazer. I always travel with a pashmina or big warm scarf that you can tie around your neck in the day or do the shoulders in the evening. Pack the dress and tights for evening it tends to be a tad dressier after dark. And work the scarf.
I am over the pond quite often, I was in Brussels about a week ago, and it was cold but not freezing. Carrying a heavy winter coat is a pain in the arse. Unless of course you are traveling with a LV steamer trunk.:)Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ok, as one of the apparently few male connoisseurs, I must ask something. Given the dissatisfaction with some of J. Crew's sizing which has been commented about above, where in the world do all you tall, larger busted women hang out?? Sorry, I just had to ask, it was driving me nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for the review! Sad it didn't work out, but like someone else said, its great of you to take the time to do a review for us :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wear a 4/6 skirt, shorts or pants in J.Crew and have to buy a size 10 dress to fit my bust. sometimes I take it in on the bottom, sometimes that doesn't work and I just can't keep it. Unfortunate but I guess there could be worse things.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Help Please! G

reat advice from New Haven Maven. I am also in EU often and scarves are a must in Paris and everywhere in France. Take a couple, at least one pashmina to keep you warm on those extra-cold days. You can wear it under or over your jacket/coat and once you see how the Parisian women are in love with their scarves you will find a myriad of ways to wear them and not take them off until summer. There are many gorgeous scarves available in the shops too so if you want to add one you will have the finest selection at your disposal.

    Enjoy your trip!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Gee Ryan, could you be more obvious? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  43. Help Please,

You are right to take the winter coat. I live in the UK and everyone is wearing winter coats here. But, don't bring your heaviest winter coat. Bring a lightweight one; like the wool ones from JCrew without thinsulate for example. All the people I saw walking the high streets this week in the upper 40's were wearing winter coats.

Yes, scarves are HUGE right now so bring a pretty one:)

Still lots of people wearing cute winter hats and gloves as well.

    Have a wonderful trip!

  44. Probably not the best place to post this but, I traded some Uggs and got a pair of NIB Salinas from JCA'er Lee. I have decided after trying to find something to go with them that they just don't work for me.

They are Salinas Patent Flat, Red, Size 8.5. There are Foot Petals on the bottom (to prevent slipping), but they have not been worn other than to try on. I still have the original box.

I would love to trade them for another pair of 8.5 flats (preferably LuLus!) but I would be willing to trade them for a jacket or sweater in size 2 or S, or just sell them. I'm pretty reasonable so make me an offer if you're interested!

  45. Thanks SO much for the review!!! I almost bought the same dress (in the blue print) and now I am glad I didn't! Although I seem to come back to JCrew year after year for staples in my wardrobe (swimwear, shoes), I agree with Anon @12:33 that poor quality and inflated prices are making me shop at other retailers.
And, speaking of poor quality, I just received the "Girls' cotton organdy Brooke dress" that I bought for my 7 yr old daughter for $125 (+7.75% CA sales tax) in White. It looked adorable on the website, and I thought, well, she's worth the splurge. But am I disappointed...It is SO sheer that I could not possible let my daughter walk around in it, she may as well walk around in her undies. So it's going back. All JCrew had to do is to add some more fabric, which you would expect for a $125 dress that's going to last 1-2 years at the most. I can get much better quality at Ralph Lauren at similar prices or Lands' End at a fraction of the price.
    JCrew, are you listening?

  48. Ryan - Isn't it obvious? They hang out at J.Crew, where lovely ladies of all sizes are! ;)

I'm on the itty-bitty petite spectrum, and envy all the statuesque ladies who can wear floor-skimming dresses! (But then again, I also love being fit-in-your-pocket tiny!) I thought this dress was lovely too when I saw it in the catalog, but never entertained actually being able to wear it. It's too bad it's a let down, though.

  50. 50 degrees in Paris isn't different than 50 degrees on this side of the atlantic. It also depends on your personal thermometer - living in a cold climate, I'd melt if I wore even close to a winter coat in 50 degree weather. I'd wear a jacket over a sweater. People from the south, OTOH, probably consider 50 cold.

also, it's not like you're going to be kicked out of Paris if you're not wearing a scarf, just as an fyi. But if you're going to wear one, go with the best - invest in Hermes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Anon 7:44 - Elizabeth tank runs large. I usually wear a small, and the XS is still fairly roomy on me. I would be swimming in a small. I ordered a small and a medium just to get the colors, and am planning on having them tailored.

I have tried to clean my light lemon Uptown without luck. I used a Coach leather cleaner too. I think it's because of the bumps in the leather that just traps the dirt.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am also a 34C (the secret is out!) & have found that J. Crew (especially fitted dresses) is not cut out for the well (or medium in my case) endowed. That is specifically why I did not pick J. Crew for my bridesmaids' dresses. Thank God for returns! (Sucks to lose the shipping cost both ways though.) I just got the Ginny flat for my wedding, & it's gorgeous. Maybe not $88+tax+shipping gorgeous, but very nice. They are a light ivory even though they appear bright white online. They are a bit on the narrow side. I wear a 6 1/2-7, & the 7 fits perfectly. (I'd say get a 1/2 size bigger.) The only problem (and it's final sale!) is that they aren't that comfortable, & I bought them so I could change out of my oppressive heels for dancing!

    ReplyDelete
  54. yeah, I just in the last year started going for "real" purses, and have been wondering the same thing myself IRT a decent leather cleaner. There was even a short article in Allure a couple mos. ago about the care and feeding of good bags but it didn't mention any particular cleaners.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anon @ 7:54 - I use Excelsior leather care protection kit that I purchased with my white leather sofa. It has a cleaner and protector and sponges that are used for application. Works like a charm on my aqua Uptown tote. Try a furniture store or shoe repair store for some good product recommendations.

  56. Does anyone own, or has tried/seen the Duchamp print Astor jacket item 96122, IRL?

I bought it and it has now shipped, I'm pretty excited. This item has been on my wish list since the holiday season and once it was discounted to $149 my size was unavailable, until today. I am hoping someone bought it after Christmas and then returned it, in good condition. It's such a beautiful jacket, a Collection piece originally $450. I hope that the navy and white will allow me some spring wear.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I sprayed my uptown tote with leather protector when I bought it and haven't had any stains yet. It's the white one so I'm quite careful but I swear by leather protector suede on every leather and suede item I buy.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ^ I meant leather protector SPRAY, not suede. duh.

    ReplyDelete
  59. marie antoinette you have a point that the temperature is the same. But the style is definitely a consideration when traveling and I believe that was the nature of the query. I've seen people wearing puffers in ATL when those in Canada would be wearing shorts. Nothing wrong with being yourself but you don't want to be noticed for dressing inappropriately. When in Rome... Or Paris. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. anon @ 10:00 pm--the duchamps does not have any navy in it. its black, brown and ivory. but you should be able to get some early spring wear out of it because it does not have a heavy, wintery look. you might try wearing it with jeans and a pop of color under it for spring.

its a great jacket, even if you decide not to wear it until next fall. its a collection piece that is certainly not 'disposable' or 'trendy'.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I just received this dress. It is absolutely beautiful and it is at a great price point. Perfect for a beach wedding. I am 5'5 and ordered a size 0. It fits true to size.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sorry about the mix up in your name NewHavenMaven. LOL I will definitely get a small since I wear a JC 6. Thanks so much for the information and helping me to decide to pull the trigger. Grecian it is!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am a bit confused that everyone seems to be going off of one or two reviews of the dress...so let me balance the playing field.

This was my #1 most coveted item. I truly feel that J.Crew designed the yellow printed version just for me. It arrived today and I am obsessed!!!

I am 5"7"/150 lbs/34C. The dress is exactly the length I expected- definitely 'maxi' so I would need a small heel (kitten or higher would work). I LOVE the fit of the bust for my size- and there is an interior lining in the top that could give enough support for a smaller chested wearer. I tried it on with my regular fit strapless bra- and had no issues with 'showage' anywhere.

It is the perfect dress for a summer wedding, cruise, even a fancy night out on vacay! I probably can't see 'dressing it down' (which I HAD hoped to do) b/c the fabric is definitely a little too 'special occasion'. The silk chiffon fabric is perfect, floaty, great texture. I can not say enough good things about this item. My husband loved it on (on me that is- hee!)- and didn't even give me 'a look' about the price (hee). So, please don't just take one or two people's negative opinions if you feel this could be a dress for you. I will definitely be looking for more reasons to wear this all summer long!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh and as to my above review- I am typically a size 8 in dresses and did take a size 8 in this. I am surprised at the front page reviewer who said she was a 34C and could not wear a bra with the dress- I had no trouble. I recommend Victoria's Secret Very Sexy deep V convertible ;) Maybe that will help!

50 degrees in Paris, England is different than in other parts of the US. I know b/c I have lived for years outside the US! It is a climate change. a damp 50 is much different than a dry 50 by a long shot. The chill can get to your bones and you feel it much differently.

  68. Anon at 12:07. Thanks for a positive review of this item. I too was really surprised and disappointed by the sheer number of people using the previous review to discount this item. If anyone on this blog had read my personal review of the Ecole jacket or any of the ruffled camisoles, it would have been just as negative as the original Whitney poster. That is why I use this blog for information, not guidance.

  69. Anony 10:31 - thank you for the comments on the Duchamp Astor. I always thought that it was navy, brown and white. Black will actually give me more wearable options, especially in fall. I plan to wear it soon with skinny white matchsticks, similar to the look in last October's catalogue, seen here:

    http://40isthenewblack.blogspot.com/2008/09/j-crew-october-astor-jacket-in-duchamp.html

It certainly looks like a beautiful piece. After waiting six months I am so excited to get it.

I live in the Uk and anon 3:20 is right. 50 is different when it is damp it does go through you much more than a crisp clear 50 degree day. I just got back from Paris and most people were wearing coats. The women were wearing tights and dresses with scarves and hats. Keep in mind once the sun goes down it gets much colder and wear comfy shoes because you will be walking miles

the victoria ruffle is TTS. the elizabeth halter was designed to be roomy and more of a trapeze shape. the victoria is cut straight through the torso. i would recommend buying a 4 if that is what you wear in other blouses or shirts at j. crew. HTH!

  73. no one is saying paris might not be cool and damp. but to make it sound like the weather in paris is so different from what the weather is in various parts of the u.s. is ignorant.

    ReplyDelete
  74. also, there is zero need to "walk miles" in paris - there is an outstanding metro system, and bicycle rental stations all over the city.

    ReplyDelete
  75. There may be "zero need" to walk miles in Paris, but I highly recommend it. Great way to see the sights and people, as well as get some exercise, which you may need after sampling the delightful Parisian pastries and cheeses. Like NYC, a wonderful city for walking about.

    ReplyDelete
  76. A few years back I spent an entire summer in Paris wearing a thick wool sweater . . . I believe in was in the 60s, not 50s, but it was bone-chilling: damp, cloudy, and no heat, inside or out, to be found.

Yes, it depends on what people are used to and their personal thermometers. It also depends on what you are going to be doing--being inside in meetings all day with a car and driver provided or hoofing it on your own as a tourist (and braving lines outside) are two different experiences/wardrobe challenges entirely. I say be prepared (especially for cold rain)!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I totally agree that Paris is a wonderful city to explore by walking. It is a must thing to do especially for me as I live in California where everyone lives in their car(s). Anyway, it's your choice to walk or not to but it is recommended. Last time I was in Paris years ago, I walked all over the city and only took the bateau bus once to explore the sites along river seine. I had such a fab time and didnt even feel tired by walking as I was so distracted by all these beautiful sites and shops and people...oh how I miss paris!
    Have a great trip :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I went to Paris last month. It is very damp, which I think makes it colder. I wore boots the entire time because I hate wet feet. Everyone there was wearing dark wash jeans, so don't listen to people when they say that Parisiennes don't wear jeans! We walked everywhere because that is how you truly get a feel for the city.

  80. i just saw this and had to comment. i went to j crew today to try on wedding dresses and i tried on the whitney. i'm 5'6", curvy, d cup. i usually wear 10s and 12s but all they let you try on are 8s in the store. i have to say that the whitney was my favorite. the 8 fit. it fit flowy, held in my chest somehow, and with heels i wouldn't need to shorten. it was one of the most flattering i tried on and i didn't think it looked cheap in any way. maybe i tried it on in the twilight zone, but just thought i'd share....

  81. Thank you for the honest review! I was considering buying this dress a a wedding dress option for our laid back beach wedding. I'm glad I found this review... I will be looking elsewhere.
