J.Crew's Latest Collection: Vintage Closet

A big "thanks!" to LizPoms who shared with us the news that J.Crew is offering a new line of clothes in stores. LizPoms (click here to read her post about this) found that several items had a special tag reading "Vintage Closet". GigiOfCa (click here to read her post about this) ran across the new line at her local store too. (Incidentally, the image of the tag above was taken by GigiOfCa & can be found at her post). :)

The items, including the blouse shown in the image (which LizPoms was kind to share), in this newest line appear to be more romantic and vintage in design. The items also offer lots of pretty details that make the line ultra-femme.

I personally cannot wait to stop by a local J.Crew to see this new line in person!

What are your thoughts on the new "Vintage Closet" line? Do you think this line is temporary (e.g. just for the Summer) or permanent (e.g. like the Collection line)? Have you seen any "Vintage Closet" items at your local store? If so, please share! :)

MINI UPDATE: Some Aficionadas (including Anon at 5:17AM & 5:35AM in this post) explained that this is not a new line, but has been around for a season or two. Apparently this line shows up in just a few select stores (which would explain why some of us have not seen it before). ;) Hopefully the Vintage Closet items will be available for purchase online. :)

  1. I saw this line at the Kierland store in Scottsdale. It had the tops that Gigi reviewed and a couple other items. There was a cute strapless dress and an eyelet tank.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Way too precious and affected for me, but that look definitely has a following, so it will probably sell.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I *hope* these will be available online, I love the vintage inspired pieces!

    ReplyDelete
  4. It's a great idea, wonder if the execution of it will go well.

I can't quite judge it by the few pieces that Gigi posted on her blog, I guess I'll have to see a little more :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I have an item that says JCrew Vintage Closet on it from last season. This is not a new line. On a few select stores carry it.

    ReplyDelete
  6. ONLY not On

In select stores only is my understanding of this line but then again you never know with JCRew!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm looking forward to seeing the Vintage Closet pieces IRL, and I really like the idea of pairing the *romantic* girly tops with the *boyfriend* jackets or pants/jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This has been around for at least a season or two. It's not new.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It is kinda sheer you can see the hanger from the pic.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I bought this shirt, and it is sheer, however you cannot see my nude bra through the fabric.

I would wear a cami under it or a sweater over it for work or church, but on a nice summer day, I will wear it by itself.

  11. Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie. What is with all the little girl rounded collars???

    ReplyDelete
  12. There is a belt I want but who, not me, wants to pay $8.50 to have a belt shipped? Doesn't that seem crazy??? Anyone know of a no minimum code? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  13. anon 6:50: Think of the sun damage to your skin. You would have to wear sunscreen all over back to protect your skin from the sun.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Love this top! But wish it was a bit thicker...why are so many of their items sheer? And yes, a no-minimum shipping code would be lovely...they truly should offer that for card members.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anon @ 7:08

Maybe I should rephrase my statement.

This is not a shirt that I would wear outside with the kids. It is also not a shirt that I would wear to a theme park, the zoo, the beach, or anywhere else where I would be exposed to the sun for more than 15 minutes at a time.

I live in rural Ohio. I do not have to walk down the street for a long perios of time to get to where I need to go. Being outside means going in the creek, walking with the kids, playing in the newly plowed field, or laying in the hammock under a tree with my kids on each side. All of which are done with jeans or shorts and an old (or less loved) tee. Definately without the use of my nice wardrobe.

This is a shirt that I would wear out to lunch with my girlfriends, or my family or shopping for the day, which in my area would be inside a mall (unless I go to Easton). I would not have to worry about whether or not my skin was exposed to the sun.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No need for an explanation I was just making a statement sorry to hit a nerve.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No problem, I just didn't want to seem as if I was unconcern about sun protection.

I actually think you make a good point. One that I hadn't considered because of how I will use the shirt. However, someone who lives in the city (and had to walk everywhere) or near the ocean (and loves to wear thin shirts over bathing suits) would certainly want to keep this in mind.

    Enjoy your day!

Here's hoping new arrivals show up online today!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Aren't the new arrivals supposed to be on the website today?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I found the "precious and affected" comment hit right on the mark for me. The over the top girlish feminine details are not my taste. The top looks too vintage, if that makes sense.

Reminds me of a J.Crew vintage-looking sweater I bought years ago. It had a bunch of little "snowballs" hanging on it and I thought it was adorable but once I put it on, gawd, it looked ridiculous on me. Some of us just can't or don't want to try to pull off that look.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm really interested in seeing these pieces in person. I love the vintage look and think there are ways to pull it off without looking juvenile. Like FFM said...pairing a top with a boyfriend jacket would be darling. Perhaps rolled up cargo pants and heels (a la Jennifer Aniston?) There is definite potential here and I hope they make them available online!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I can pull off this look without looking too girlish.

For some reason, when I try to wear any of the ruffled tops and camis from J. Crew, that look so incredible on everyone else, I look like I'm a little girl playing dressup.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think "precious and affected" is right on the mark. That being said - it is not for me, but I do know women that can pull off the look and look lovely - it's simply not me. Too many frills and ruffles and lace for my taste. I'll do a little eyelet, but not a lot of lace.

    ReplyDelete
  23. where are the new arrivals? :(

    ReplyDelete
  24. Vintage Closet seems promising, although my local store probably won't get any pieces. I'm a proponent of mixing anthro into my JC so this is up my alley!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Boca Town Center in Florida carries this line and I have to say that I was not that impressed with it. It seems to veer away from J.Crew's normal vision for their clothes and reminds me of Anthropologie or another more "off-beat" store. I hope J.Crew just focuses on what its good at and leaves the vintage to other stores.

    ReplyDelete
  26. When is JCREW going to update the sites????!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. OT: I was at Forever 21 and saw some cluster pearl necklaces very similar to the J Crew style. The pearl cluster on the F21 style has "Y" shape. I bought one, snipped off the stem of the "Y" (if that makes sense) and voila! It now it looks just like the J Crew/Target necklace. Oh, and the necklace was only $5.80!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was looking forward to an update today....

    boooooo.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sorry to be OT: For anyone who still buys JC's shoes, how are the slingback peep toe mary jane heels that came in the spring rollout? I too was looking for a pink shoe and that one looks cute. How is the sizing? TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Charleston store also had a piece marked J. Crew Haberdashry.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have a few button down shirts with the Haberdashery label in them. I've had them for at least a year.

It's interesting what gets shipped to certain stores and not others.

    ReplyDelete
  32. does anyone know when they will add new arrivals online? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. i really like this style, but none of the vintage pieces i've seen yet are better than the ones i already have. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. that looks way too cute! Now ,I would so buy vintage line if I can see it at my local jcrew here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The sale restocks have been as late as 10:45 EST or so in recent days. Maybe the site will be updated later this morning?

I love the vintage pieces. They remind me a lot of some of my favorite things at anthropologie. (personally, I am a big fan of the peter pan collars). Good call, J.Crew! This is the first I have heard of them too, they are not in stores in my area. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hate to be the bearer of bad news...

I called CS this morning to inquire about the new arrivals. She said that the new arrivals, for the April catalog, will not be online until next Wednesday. I don't know how accurate the information was, but I thought I'd pass it along just the same.

I always thought new arivals came on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but she seemed very confident with her answer.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm about to have a panic attack if they do not update the website soon. I thought they were updating it today?!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nichi,

That sounds about right to me too. I was surprised that people were reporting that it was going to be today anyway.

I think next week sounds on target. In years past it used to be the last day or two of the month regardless of what day it fell on.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I just called, it should be updated in the next hour or so. YIPPEE

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with you AppGal, there are ways to pull it off without looking juvenile. But one has to feel comfortable with the look. I would feel girlish because that is how I was made to dress as a child. Kudos to those who can pull it off, it can look sweet.

I'm more of a 60's style vintage person myself. Love the Mad Men look. Nice that J.Crew is trying something new though.

As for the haberdashery label, I think that is just for specific items that are tailored in the menswear style. I have a few shirts and a suiting jacket with the label and all but one are more than 3 years old. Most of them purchased online.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, should be interesting to see what CS rep is correct. I won't wait around all day to see though....my goodness people. Having panic attacks about clothes...silly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Is there a way to know when the site has updated when you are on it without constantly shifting screens?

    ReplyDelete
  43. The past few times the morning of site updates for new arrivals, the website would go down temporarily... hasn't happened yet today... I know, am way too eager!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh come on people, don't be so harsh. Some people get excited about clothes. Maybe the poster can't get to a B&M and is anxious to look at something fresh and new. For all we know, this could totally make her day. You never know what some people deal with in their lives. Give them the benefit of the doubt and if this is excitement for them and not you, so be it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. thank annon 10:28.
I'm not where near a B&M store and doing some virtual browsing is something I look forward to doing.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have seen the eyelit top and I wasn't too impressed with it. I love Jcrew for its simplicity. Lately all the ruffles etc. are just too much. There comes a point when you risk looking like your seven year old when you walk out of the house.

I was in my local B&M yesterday and they had a fabulous new tee shirt that they just got. It reminded me of fireworks. Slub cotton, not too thin, in pewter, neutral, or white with these amazing bright colored "fireworks" with multicolored threads woven in. They were selling like hotcakes. The girls couldn't keep them on the floor. The top ran small so even my petite self had to size up or be strangled by the crew neck. If you visit your B&M keep your eye out. It is a really unique top.

    ReplyDelete
  47. OT- BR is having an extra 20% off sale. You can stack codes and get an exta 10%. EXTRA20, EXTRA10 .

    ReplyDelete
  48. anthropologie is what I thought of when I saw that top. Cute but not for me and definately not for the price that either retailer would want for it.

Regarding the site update - I wish it would happen soon. I'm so not in love with anything on there now and I want something new to covet.

    ReplyDelete
  49. hmm sale section is now updated but no new arrivals up

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon at 10:34 -

I saw that same exact shirt....I hate to say it but I thought it was was horrid looking. It kinda looked like a 6 th grader glued a bunch of pieces on. And the 45.00 price tag is insane.

But hey to each their own!! I am glad you like it and were able to snag one up.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well… I just called CS twice about the website update to see what they would say, & one person said tonight about midnight & the other said by the end of the weekend! So who knows. I am not counting on it happening today, though.

    ReplyDelete
  52. ...and one cs said Weds!

    sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I cannot get to a store but I do not let JCrew updates control me so. I mean, yes, I get excited but I don't sit around all day and hit refresh. I check every two or three hours or even, gasp...once in the morning and once at night!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought this was a support group for those of us who *do* sit around refreshing all morning? :)The sale section was restocked, but no new arrivals as far as I can tell...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have a vintage closet item from last year...it is a yellow peasant top embroidered with brown and white circles near the neckline. It is very pretty and flowy, but different from this shirt on this post. I am not sure why both pieces are vintage closet? I wonder if J. Crew has an explanation of this particular line of clothing...

My yellow top is made of linen, so it feels vintage. Hmm...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi All - OT but Kate Spade Friends and Family starts today. 30% off all items, inluding sale. Code is available on www.retailmenot.com. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  57. dinagideon,

    Your top sounds lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anon at 11:40:

Thank you!!! My Polyvore items include a pic of it...I have not yet created a set with it but since I plan on pulling the yellow top out to wear sometime in the near future, I will definitely be making a set with it. My polyvore name is dinagideon (real original, I know...). :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. maybe it's not a support group, but it is not a forum to ridicule others either.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I was told by a CS rep it would update tomorrow. She's always been right so far!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I bought an eyelet top online last summer (can't remember what it was called, but it came in cream, azalea (pink) or navy. It had the "vintage closet" label.

    ReplyDelete
  62. OT: I finally was able to order the Rosette Tees in Shell & Natural on Saturday. Today they are $39.99, hopefully I'll be able to get an adjustment.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anon at 11:40--I think Bekah was being facetious about sitting around refreshing all day. Why the vitriol? And I don't like it when anybody accuses someone else of not having "a life". We all have lives, and you don't know anything about most of us.

I don't think J Crew is anybody's sole preoccupation in life. For many, like myself, it's a fun diversion, like cotton candy for the brain. You do have to watch out not to eat too much cotton candy, though.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Bekah -- that was funny. I got it.

GoldCoastGal - Yay on your t! I love mine.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well that's strange the snarky comment by Anon @ 11:40 (or was it 11:49?) to which I replied is gone. Oh well. The other Anon @ 11:40 is not the one I am addressing, just for record and to avoid confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Does anyone have an opinion on the stretch wool daphne dress? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I posted some pictures from the new catalog if anyone is interested.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Laura-Thank you! Finally, I can get some vintage slims. $98.00! Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  69. WTF Jcrew. I need to see the new arrivals like NOW!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks Laura for the pictures & videos!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Those 98.00 vintage slims will sell out like lightning in the smaller sizes. I wish they'd get them online. They make my trigger finger itchy to spend. Must. have.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks Laura, you've whet my appetite for some new jcrew! I wish the site would get updated already, I have serious procrastinating I need to do!

    ReplyDelete
  73. meredith,

How long have you been on this blog? I bet not as long as I have...since the first post; day one. I think you can figure out people pretty well by how they post. esp. if you are a psychiatrist. People (brag) and post about lying to family and husbands about their shopping habits and hiding purchases. I do believe people sit around and refresh all day.

    ReplyDelete
  74. OT question: The taffeta a-line skirt...how does it fit? I'm usually an 8 in J Crew skirts. All that's available right now is a 10. Pull the trigger on 10 or hold out for an 8? TIA.
    L

    ReplyDelete
  75. Lori-

I think it depends on your shape. I have hips and usually wear a 10 in pencil skirts and 6/8 in full shapes. I ordered the taffeta a-line in an 8 and while it fits, it's not an overly flattering look since the inverted V doesn't "flow"... hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Site is running really slow for me. Wonder if it is going to crash...

    ReplyDelete
  77. wonder if they are updating?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Lori: I wear a ten in skirts, and in this skirt, the taffeta a-line, I have just fit into the 12 I purchased at Christmas. Definitely size up if you have hips. :) Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks Anon 1:19 and dinagideon! I don't have hips but I do carry all of my weight in my middle. Yes, I suffer from the dreaded muffin top! ;) I hate not being able to try on. Curse you final sale!! Thanks so much ladies for the info!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Does anyone know how the Solid silk garland cami fits? Should I size up or down or is it TTS.

    Thanks Ladies!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I just returned from Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio and I asked a bunch of questions. Here is what I was told...

The Vintage Closet Line is relatively new. The manager at that store said that she had not seen them until the shirts that just came out. They have not shown up yet in a catalog. They suggested that maybe it is a limited relaease and, if it does well, it may be released online, etc., in the future.

The haberdashry line was also in the store. The items I saw were nice, fitted shirts with 3/4 length sleeves. They were 97% cotton and 3% stretch (of some type). They are a bit more fitted than the typical J. Crew item. I am normally an 8, and a size medium fit me perfectly. The shirts were regularly $58 - on special for $48. With my teachers discount they were $40.80. I got white and a bright blue/turquoise.

I saw and tried on the above mentioned "fireworks" tee. It was cute, but way too long for me. The length was a bit like the henna tee from the resort line and it has a graphic on the bottom which doesn't work for my body type. It was definately a more casual tee. I was hoping for a bit more color. The differences between the three tees they had weren't very noticeable.

BTW, we are getting a bad reputation. I mentioned something about this blog to the SA who helped me (who was EXTREMELY helpful, and lovely in case she is reading this) and she said that she too reads this blog. However, she thought it was a bit negative. I have to say, I understand why she might see it that way.

Oh, and I was able to pick up a copy of the latest catalog while I was there.

Here's to looking forward to summer!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh, and the question about the solid silk garland cami...

I tried it on in store a couple of weeks ago. I am an 8, I tried on a 6 and it still looked like a tent on me. I didn't try any further sizes because I could tell that the shape wouldn't work for me.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Laura - where can I see your photos?

    ReplyDelete
  84. I guess j.crew doesn't like this blog because they called out for things like policy inconsistencies, bad service, etc. It would be fun to do another post on why we love/don't love our local stores!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I have to say that I have always received excellent service at Easton Town Center in Columbus. The Sales Associates are always polite and knowledgable about the products. They are available to help, but they don't hover. I have not had a time when they haven't offered to start a fitting room for me and checked during my time in there to see if the sizes were correct. Additionally, they have always answered all of the random JCA I have thrown at them without issue.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I am so flippin pissed that the new arrivals aren't on the site yet. WTF!!! They better be up tomorrow or im going to call and complain

    ReplyDelete
  90. I saw the "fireworks" tee too. My first thought was that it might be the next big thing (like the rose tee or the spring chiffon rosette tee), but my second thought was it reminds me too much of the fabric scrap-weaving kit I had when I was a kid. :-p Cute and unique, though.

    ReplyDelete
  91. What's the fireworks tee?

    ReplyDelete
  92. @Nichi: I'll second that - the Easton SAs are always super helpful, as are the absolutely wonderful sales associates at Polaris. They've helped many a time with numerous returns, no complaints. Always cheerful and always friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  93. anon at 4:42

The fireworks tee is a fitted slub tee comes in colors gray, wite and natural it has these brightly colored thick thread like pieces either glued on or sewn on in the shape of fireworks in the upper corner and middle of the tee. JMPO....it is damn ugly. But it seems like others here like it. It retails for 45.00...it kinda looks like a school art project.

    ReplyDelete
  94. LOL- I guess school art sells. will look for it in the store, thanks Nathan!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I LOVE the Pleasanton J Crew store!! They are so wonderful and friendly and helpful! Ah! They may not carry as many "high end" things as Walnut Creek - but ah... what a breath of fresh air to go there over WC.
But that's not why I am writing - some JCAs were looking for the Lattice print pencil skirt in the brownish color - they had three - two in size 12 and one in size 8 for $29.99! Give them a call!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Thank You Mack!!

I am on hold with them right now. They are shipping me the 8 and they even honored my teacher's discount. I can stop stalking it online.

    I love you...

Alright...so it may not be love...more of a very strong like...alright, I respect you...maybe it's more like appreciation...I hope we can still be friends.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Re the "Fireworks" tee, the embroideries are colorful chiffon strips. It's the same type of construction and color palette as what's on the Painted Dream Dress (11929).

I actually thought the embroidery patterns were flowers rather than fireworks.

    LL

    ReplyDelete
  98. 11929 is damm ugly, so the fireworks tee must be too esp. if it is chiffon trim.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I saw what I assume is the fireworks T today and it didn't strike me as being a love it or leave it item! The fabric added a bit of color on an otherwise neutral shirt which is a nice, if minor, departure from the all-neutral palette. My concern is price and possibility of it falling apart, which is why I didn't go for the other floral ringspun Ts from the first rollout. I did get a couple of the slub ts when they went on promo (puff sleeve in dk. slate and ruffle neckline "Jenna's pick"), and they both seem to be more durable than their ringspun bretheren.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The slub is far more durable than the Ringspun tees, however all the chiffon or whatever would not hold up in the wash for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Thanks Laura and Anon! I want those Vintage Slim Jeans for $99 too!

I am home sick today and was looking forward to a day of browsing new arrivals....oh pooh.

    ReplyDelete
  102. My PS sent me an email today saying: "I can certainly understand your desire to see our new items for our spring collection. I do apologize that there has been a delay in the update. Our website will be updated at midnight tonight EST." - so there you go... if true, us left coast gals will be loving life at 9 pm! :) I did get a catalog, and my favorite thing in it is the model! :) She is beautiful. I also like some of the new jewelry they have. fun!

And to Nichi - yay! on the skirt. Glad that worked out. And hope we can be... friends... too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thanks for the update Mack.

I'm hoping that there's something on the website that is not in the catalog. I'm with you on the catalog - there's really nothing in the catalog that I want.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I also heard from my ps today that the website will be updated at midnight tonight And she is always right!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Did anyone else get in on the huge sale update this morning? I managed to get the last few items on my "missed it" list from fall 2008. Hope they all ship. I was able to use the MUSTHAVE for free shipping too, although it amounted to a pretty small discount, but the prices were great anyway so I'm happy.

I snagged a Maggie jacket in camel earlier this week and it has shipped already. I realize it may be a worn return but if it's not in perfect condition I know J.Crew will let me return it.

I always buy more fall/winter items so I'm feeling pretty good about the deals this week, especially seeing the recent 2009 fall preview.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I only see the slideshow, none of the new items come up when I click on the categories.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Clicking on the "shop this look" link doesn't work either. :(

    ReplyDelete
  108. Well, they must be updating. I am getting the green 'cannot process your request at this time' screen. Would be nice to see a few new items.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I see the new stuff now. I guess you were ahead of the game Ginger Snap!

    ReplyDelete
  110. If anybody sees the tank in the cashmere three quarter sleeve cardi picture, please let me know! Its really cute, but I don't see it on the site.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I know Crewbie, that is the only thing that really caught my eye… & its not even available!!!

  113. Should've purchased the Solid silk garland cami yesterday. Would you believe it went back up to regular price today?

Anyway, I tried to do a search for the Sunbleached crinkle flower tee and they said the couldn't because it was a sale item. Oops! I didn't know... anyway I called the Cherry Hill store that just opened & they had them in all sizes (Even they didn't know they were marked down.)

  114. I bought that blouse you posted a photo of in the Aventura store (Florida). It has really lovely detail and the sheer cotton fabric is comfy- perfect for spring and summer. I will say, however, that I tried on the size 4 (I am normally a small or a 4) but it was tight on my chest and while it buttoned up, I really felt like I'd be a it uncomfy, especially sitting, so I tried on the size 6 and it was just right. if you find anywhere to buy one of these online, be aware that this blouse in particular seems to run about a size too small- the 4 basically fit me the way a 2 normally would.
