J.Crew Email: Spring fever? Free shipping is here.

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta & Dina, as well as Anon at 2:26 PM (in this post), who let us know about J.Crew's most recent promotion.

J.Crew sent an email & announced on its main page (refer to here), that they are offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code TULIP. They are also offering free shipping on Canadian orders of $150+ with promo code CANADA. These offers expire 3/11/09. :)

Are there any items that you are currently lusting after that you would like to get? If so, do you think you will take advantage of this offer and get those items? Also, what do you think of these recent offers lasting 2 to 3 days? ;)

  1. Sorry to be OT, but does anyone have the Nolita jean jacket? I saw it at the store and am taken with the pintucks in the front. I got one just like it from babyGap for my daughter last year and totally wanted one for myself. I just don't like the destroyed aspect of the blue, and am somewhat wary of a white jacket with a toddler around, and on, me 24/7. I did like how soft the denim of the blue jacket was, and didn't see the white to compare the feel of the fabrics. Can anyone comment on fabric and if the fit is TTS? I was in too much of a rush to try on. TIA!

OK, I had to post that again since I'm in fact lusting after that jacket, and will definitely pull the trigger on it and a couple other things with low inventory that have been in my cart awhile, if I hear good things about Nolita. I'm not a big fan of the short promos because I tend to dither unless the prices and out of sight, or there's only one of an item left. Now where the no minimum FS?

  2. I am wondering about the Coralie suede heels currently on sale for $130. Any comments on sizing or comfort? I wear size 8 everywhere else but notice more often than not I'm a size 8 1/2 in J Crew heels.

I am loving the bright blue!

  3. Prices ARE out of sight, sorry!

  4. I am waiting for our DC JCA outing. (Plus, since that's a Sunday, it's ok with my Lenten shopping ban.) But I am so lusting after the Cotton Cricket Cardigan.

  5. Has anyone noticed the sandals this year are not really priced less than last year?

Also, since the site did not update yet I'm guessing their way of updating did not change w/day light savings time change?

  6. HeidiG,
Someone on this blog posted that they got that sweater and the cotton was rough and not nice and soft at all. I crossed it off my list b/c I was trying to decide between 3 sweater anyway.

  7. I won't be using this promo at all. I am waiting patiently...however long for a % off/private sale. Nothing I want is on sale and I won't pay full price just to get free shipping esp. with the crazy high minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hopefully, there will be a new (and BETTER) offer come up on Thurs. this week. Fingers crossed:)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Since I have learned from my PS that free shipping and educator or student discount can no longer be combined with free shipping I won't be using this promo. The educator's/student discount is a better deal and ongoing.

  10. ^ I agree. I have some things in my basket but they haven't been marked down, and I'm not buying them until they are. Free shipping just is so blase compared to what other retailers offer - just got an offer for 30% off the Gap & its affiliates, and since shipping is a flat-rate $7, that's so much more enticing than what J.Crew offers.

I really think J.Crew needs to examine its shipping charges. To me, they are a great turn-off, and run contrary to every single other retailer with which I shop.

  11. i'll also pass on this promo. small update just happened a couple mins ago. not much.

  12. I am going to put in an order this weekend so I will use one of the codes as it will be over the minimum for any of them. I have some favorite items that are getting a lot of discussion so I'm concerned they will sell out. I figure that if so many people here want the items then a lot of others will buy them online and in the stores.

I may regret it if they are discounted later, but if they sell out I would regret it more if I didn't buy them. Especially two of them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm sorry, but these free shipping codes are so LAME......get with the program, J. Crew, and offer low flat-rate shipping like your competitors!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have several items in my shopping cart awaiting further markdowns or another % off code. There are plenty in inventory right now, so I will continue to wait...

    ReplyDelete
  15. FFM - I checked the inventory too and one of the items I want is low in my size. :( I hope there is a promo on Thursday, but if not I am going to buy anyway.

Every now and then there are some pieces that I just must have because they will fit right into my wardrobe and are so my style. I was showing DH these items on the weekend and he totally agreed that I should get them. With that kind of encouragement, it will be hard to wait until later this week to pull the trigger. LOL

  16. Has anyone tried the Frenchie Slicker? Is it TTS, very fitted, loosely tailored?

    Any advice is appreciated. TIA.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anon, ChezMegan reviewed the Frenchie, complete with IRL photos. She said it is TTS. See here:

  18. Soon to be PhD: I have a pair of Coralie suede heels in Light Eucalyptus, and I found them to be TTS (same size I take in all J.Crew shoes - 7) and more comfortable than their past offers. I have wide feet too, if that helps. :)

And the bright blue looks gorgeous! ;)

  19. OT Question: I just received a pair of pony hair animal print flats that an Aficionda recommended from Target (backordered for over a month). I love them, but I'm wondering if I missed the right season -- do you think these should only be worn in Fall/Winter?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love J Crew but their shipping prices make no sense. The more money you spend the higher the mailing cost? In theory you could buy one expensive item like a cashmere sweater that does not weigh much and the shipping charge could be $18.50. While someone else could buy a number of sale items that weight a lot like boots and outerwear and be charged less for shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Like HeidiG, I'm waiting for the DC JCA meetup. :) I'm sure there'll be more than enough temptation there!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with the comments on shipping - JCrew really should just charge a flat rate shipping fee, rather than charging higher shipping for the more you spend. It makes no sense.

Also, while the free shipping codes are appreciated, such offers are simply not agressive enough when you consider that Banana Republic and Gap are offering percentage off sales more frequently.

Another thing I don't get is that for Canadian orders, JCrew is still charging 7% GST (Goods and Services Tax), even though the GST rate in Canada has been 5% for years now.

I love JCrew, but would reccomend that they really reconsider their fees for shipping and taxes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have items in my cart, but I'm waiting for a % off code. I agree with the others that the shipping costs are too high. Their minimum purchase requirement is also too high. That is a huge turn-off for me when shopping online. I placed an order last night with banana and gap. You just can't beat their flat rate combined shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I bet the Gap and Banana Republic have more inventory to sell than J Crew.

We only saw the deep discounts at X-mas when the inventories were high.

There is nothing I want that = $150.00.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The shipping rates are pretty high, especially if taxes are applied on top of it. JCrewDude makes a good point in that the shipping should not be charged by the total of the order. Maybe if they charged by weight? But then they would have to list the weight of everything so you could figure out how much it would cost to ship and they likely wouldn't be able to sell those heavier items online.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Georgia Girl: I completely agree about some items being must haves and fitting right into your wardrobe. :) Congratulations on getting your wishlist items...that is VERY exciting! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. You want my hard-earned dollars J. Crew? Show me you want them. Free Shipping codes are not nearly enough to pry the recession-reduced dollars from my wallet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm waiting for the dusty rose juliets and pewter library cardigan to get marked down. The champagne library cardi is already on sale, so hopefully I won't have to wait long for the grey

    ReplyDelete
  29. So sad they offer free shipping, but yet the sale section didn't update today... how tricky!
I won't be using this code until there is some more options in the sale section unfortunatly.

  30. JCrew's stock is at 9.20 and the 52 week low is around 8.00 so they aren't doing well....I know this is only one factor but just pointing it out.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I used to check JCrew DAILY and order WEEKLY. I haven't placed in order in 30 days and have NO plans on ordering anything AT ALL. My family has been hit HARD by the economy and ever since the website 'upgrade' my JCrew shopping experience has been hit or miss. I am DONE shopping for the forseeable future. Ask me again in a year.... I am pretty sure that I have more than enough JCrew to last several years. This economy SUCKS.

  32. Anon@10:44 AM - I reviewed the frenchie slicker here: http://gigisgoneshopping.blogspot.com/2009/03/j-crew-frenchie-slicker.html

Georgia Girl - I think if you're going to wear the items right away they are worth the price you pay. I got the twisted cotton trench and it may go down lower than $125. I've already worn it 3x, so I am fine with that. By the time it goes down in price I will have gotten my money's worth.

    ReplyDelete
  33. May I ask -- is it possible to check inventory on-line? If so, please explain! Or do you have to call CS and ask?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmm, not sure where to find Alexis' email address or how to email on the blog......

Anyway, I received an email from J.Crew today:

    Canada, free shipping is here.

We're bringing shipping to your doorstep. Free shipping on orders of $150 or more. Enter code CANADA at checkout.

    Fine print:
Previous purchases are not eligible for this discount. Free shipping offer is valid through Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 11:59pm ET on Internet orders shipped via regular shipping (4 to 7 business days) to Canada. Free shipping applies to online only orders of $150 or more before shipping, handling and taxes are added. Free ground shipping is applied at checkout with promo code CANADA. Offer not valid on telephone orders. This offer cannot be combined with any other promotion.

  35. Elle- you can check inventory online. You go into your shopping cart and make the quantity of everything 99- then it readjusts the inventory in red. Works everytime. Ryan- well put. I don't have $150 free dollars right now just to get free shipping.

  36. Hi Gigi, thanks for reviewing the Frenchie slicker. Can you tell me if there were just on-seam pockets? I think I see other horizontal front slit pockets on the image on J.Crew dot com, but it's hard to tell. If they aren't pockets, I don't know what they are.

Thanks for the info and IRL photos too.

  39. Don't ALL free shipping codes work for Canada? I've never ever been unable to use one. Lame.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Has anyone seen the Ellora print shirt at their B&M? I missed my chance to get it online and my B&M doesn't have it/didn't get it. Can't do a "we will find it" since it is now on sale. I'm looking for a size 0.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anon 3:22 - all the FS codes do work for Canada. They didn't always work for Canada but J.Crew changed the policy and now they do, which is nice. Eddie Bauer FS codes do not work for Canada. I've asked why and they say it is because they do not charge the duty and taxes up front, only on delivery. Although they say they are working on it.

I remember the days when a J.Crew FS code was a good score. Now, not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Alexis,
Do you think you could make a weekly post dedicated to complaining about J.Crew? I love your blog, honestly, but wading through 30+ comments that are complaining about the same thing (shipping costs, no promos, mean SAs), is very time consuming. Maybe even a separate thread for each, since those seem to be the biggest issues.

Additionally, since many people on this blog think it could be used as a good way to provide feedback to J.Crew, it'd probably be helpful if all the complaints were in one post, not scattered throughout.

(And to everyone else, please don't respond that I simply don't have to read the comments. It's not that I don't want to read them - it's that lately, almost every post is inundated with complaint after complaint.)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I just think it's unrealistic for J Crew to expect that people will respond to 2-day free shipping codes in this economy. They should have rethought their shipping fees when the economy tanked in the fall - I personally find them insulting, and know several other people who are loyalists who feel the same way. I won't be buying ANYTHING until it's 30% off and the shipping is free. I don't care if they generally design clothes I like better than others - the prices are too high for the quality, and the shipping fees are ridiculous. They need to rethink their strategies for keeping the loyal folks loyal at a time like this - otherwise we'll all bolt for the BR sale racks. It's a buyer's market - that's what every headline says. But J Crew seems to have its head in the clouds about maintaining some kind of inflated image of what the label stands for - and these days it doesn't stand for quality, it stands for paying too much. And at a time when so many people are struggling, it's just not attractive. It's a total turnoff.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To answer the question posed, I think 2-3 day codes is a little short, but since there are so many being offered, and many with later expiration dates, it basically seems like there is a code available at almost any time.

Also, it's unfair to compare Gap and BR to J.Crew's discounts. While Gap's family of stores offers FS all the time, the FS code requires a minimum purchase of $100 (Unless you reach a certain level of spending on your store card with them), and that's only for cardholders!

And while it's true that Gap and BR have run more percentage off promos (which is easy to do when J.Crew pretty much offers none lately), that's also an unfair comparison - the promos are rarely for all of their stores at the same time, and are frequently for something specific (shoes, sweaters, tees, pants, etc.).

    ReplyDelete
  45. Rachel S,

    Yeah, right....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Even though the items I want are already on final sale, they're still not marked down enough for me to bite the bullet. Free shipping won't cut it either. I'm lusting after the tie front cotton poplin dress in crips celery, black, light pewter, and tea rose as well as the silk fresco dress, which I think is a fantastic statement dress (i'm a dress girl through and through). Can't wait for a %off promotion! Then those beauties will be mine.

    Here's to waiting....

    ReplyDelete
  47. Actually, the sale section DID update today, but it was so small that you could easily have missed it. +1 in the sweater section, +1 in the shorts, +1 in the tees and I stopped there because it was not worth the time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Rachel S.....Oh Pleeeeese! just keep on scrolling on past the complaints, and say nothing, you have just opened up a can of worms.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I really enjoy this blog- complaints- constructive and otherwise- along with the positive. That is what makes this blog. Hearing the good things about JCrew as well as the not so good. I cannot imagine having a separate place for complaints only. Life is not a happy go lucky bowl of cherries. It is a mix and that is what this blog is. I love it--craziness and all:) (unless people get vicious and down right nasty--and when they do Alexis does stop that post and rightly so!)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Rachel S. and Joangee need to start their own blog together! (or are they the same person?)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree that it's good to have variety. What a boring blog it would be if people just sang the praises of J.Crew all day and pretended nothing could be improved.

And as someone said the other day, it is the internet, after all. There are bound to be some sharp retorts. How do people make it through the day if they can't handle a little snarkiness once in a while? Fact of human life.

    ReplyDelete
  52. snarkiness... that word just makes me laugh :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. J.Crew needs to step up its promotion. There are things I want but I am not buying them at full price. Banana and other competitors are offering percent off and free shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It is too bad we cannot add Smileys to the end of our posts, it would help to lighten things up around here.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Just received a package and wanted to do a couple quick reviews in case anyone is considering any of the items.

Fireball necklace -- LOVE this. It's the one with the big single fireball on a chain, not the one with all the beads. The color is "shell" and it does have the slightest hint of light pink in the stones, which looks so pretty with the gold. The chain is also a little sparkly which adds a nice touch, I think. The chain is long -- the fireball hits at about the bottom of my bra. It's not heavy, but has a little weight, which is nice. I got really into sparkly jewelry over the holidays with all their crystal stuff, but a lot of it seems a bit too much with the new spring palette -- this one is the perfect compromise.

Gladiola dress -- I sized up in this one cause my normal size was just a tiny bit snug around the rear-end area and sitting it was a bit much (this is probably just me lying to myself about my real size, though, so only size up if you are on the bigger side of your size, I'd say). It's a bit shapeless in the bigger size without the belt, but with it it's adorable. I think the little string loops are too low, for me anyway (5'5) so I will cut them off and just wear the belt higher. It looks good at the natural waist, but even better, IMO, a bit higher for an empire effect. You can actually make the belt tighter by hooking it onto the braiding, rather than the loop stitched onto it for that purpose. I usually don't like yellow but something about this yellow makes it much softer, I guess it's a bit pastel, and combined with the grey it is light and pretty but not bright.

Navy-striped tunic -- looks like it does on the website, very cute, perfect paired with cropped white matchsticks and navy espadrilles. It doesn't have notches in the side, though, so it is a bit tight at the bottom, but not overly so. I might just get some cut in by a tailor so it has a flowier shape, which is what I was going for. On the whole, a great top, and even better now that it's on sale.

I also got a yoga mat, will have to test it out with a downward dog and sweaty palms before I pass judgment though!

Anyway, I hope that helps someone!

    ReplyDelete
  56. rachel s, gap offers $7 flat-rate shipping. I'm cool with that any time. So are most people. Please get your facts straight before you start pontificating.

    ReplyDelete
  57. JC needs to get competitive ~ in this lackluster economy, this high ceiling for free s/h doesn't cut it. Not gonna order until they have some markdowns, not like I really NEED anything.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I bit at the coupon...I figured I'd get a couple marked down shorts and a couple tops, one of which is on final sale. I figured that I can return at least three of the items if I didn't like. I got:

Frankie short in golden hickory (I love this color...I think it will look good with the lighter pinks and peaches going on).

Chino 3" short in light kelly (again, I love this color. So bright and cheerful. Especially with pastels)

Slub ruffled neck tee in the slate color. Tried on, fit's TTS, if not a teeny bit loose.

Henley vneck sweater in key lime.

  59. I am aware of what Gap offers as its shipping, as I'm a regular shopper there. My point is that they only offer FREE shipping to cardholders based on either minimum order spend or minimum cardspend - so comparing Gap's free shipping and J.Crew's free shipping is slightly unfair.

As for negative comments, I don't have a problem with them - my problem is with the constant off-topic-ness of them. If you really wanted to get J.Crew's attention to make a change, I can't imagine a better way than a single thread with hundreds of comments, but that's just me.

To Alexis - please feel free to delete my earlier comment. I'm sorry that NOT bashing on J.Crew generates so many personally negative responses.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Alee, thank you for posting the great reviews! They really help a lot especially for those of us who don't live near a b&m!

    ReplyDelete
  61. All you Anons must be the same person, too!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Nope. Anon at 6:17 ~ I know I'm not same person as anon 6:12, but this just shows many people are thinking the Same things. Its a no brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Someone asked about wearing animal print shoes year-round, or only in a certain season. I believe they're appropriate year-round, but that's just my personal opinion.

I love these free shipping codes. I just purchased the Augusta peep toe heels. I wear a size 9 in all heels from J. Crew that I've purchased so far, but in these I'll need to exchange them for an 8.5 instead. Just a note for anyone else eyeing these. (Same thing with the Carmen peep toes - I have to exchange for a half size smaller).

    ReplyDelete
  64. I know that I would buy more with a flat shipping or free shipping which could be stacked on discounts.

They should seriously consider giving free shipping as a cardholder perk. Just dont get what benefit this JC card provides besides the $25 per every $500 spent (which in this economy seems like a joke!).

I know this complaint comes up often but it is a valid one.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sorry Jenn, there are plenty of Anons that post here. I'm the snarkiness Anon at 5:19.

Anon @ 5:24, glad you got a laugh, reading your post made me laugh.

Rachel S. wow, you started out assertive and then switched to passive-aggressive, which totally diminishes your point.

Have a wonderful dramarama day everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  66. @West sider - I agree. I have had a JCrew card for years, and think they could do a lot more with that. Like I said, Gap cards get you free shipping if you spend $100, and if you spend a certain amount (800) during a year, you get upgraded to "Silver" status, and get free shipping all the time - plus a slew of other benefits!

    ReplyDelete
  67. how is it unfair to compare gap/br and jcrew's shipping? The bottom line is, with br/gap, at most you'll have to pay $7 in shipping. J.Crew's minimum is $5.95, only that's only for something up to $25, which, with them, is basically nothing, except maybe if you order one pair of socks.

J.Crew's shipping rates are completely uncompetitive, and that's a very fair comparison to make.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It's unfair to compare because this thread was about J.Crew's free shipping MINIMUM. My point is that Gap has a minimum for FS also. I am not disputing now, and have never disputed before, that flat-fee shipping is better than J.Crew's policy.

My initial point, which seems to be lost amongst all the squabbling, is that if you are serious about asking J.Crew to change its policies, a single thread with hundreds of comments is more effective than many threads with comments scattered throughout.

And @Anony #18: Not entirely sure how I switched to being PA. My first two posts were different - one was a suggestion to Alexis, and one addressed the topic at hand (free shipping promos and the number of days for which they are available). I haven't changed my stance from either of these posts, so I'm not sure how my point is being diminished.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I dunno, I think seeing the subject constantly mentioned, day after day, would state the point with more emphasis than doing it one single day would.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rachel S

I'm sorry that NOT bashing on J.Crew generates so many personally negative responses.

    Sounds PA to me.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Rachel S. you have a valid suggestion. I think a post of running complaints would send a strong message if it were read by J.Crew staff, particularly the right people. But, I think that posters always go to the most current post so it may not really work so well. People get bored pretty fast.

Maybe a whole new blog with that theme would work better.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hahaha, okay Anon. You can call it what you want, but I'm just commenting on observed behavior on this blog (and still fail to see how this diminishes my point). I've seen many other users criticized for failure to bash on J.Crew, and I'm not the only one who's mentioned this.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thank you, Georgia Girl! I agree that people DO gravitate towards the most recent post.

I was actually thinking of it as a weekly sort of feature. I know that when I worked in retail, one of the funnest things to do was do get together and share customer stories (all of customers being ridiculous) - sort of sharing war stories with each other.

If you'd frequent a new blog (I know this one has a huge base), I'd definitely set that up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Photoshop alert!

Check out the enlarged pics of the Frenchie trench. Zoom in on the view of the right side (second pic). Focus on the apparent besom pocket just below the belt. As you zoom in it is photoshopped out and then on-seam pockets appear. Zoom out and the besom pockets appear again. Same happens with the last pic but if you look at the first pic, the besom pockets are not photoshopped out when you zoom in.

    Funny.

    ReplyDelete
  75. rachel s. why don't you put your money where your mouth is and do the work yourself rather than ask alexis? anyone can create a google blog - you can call it jcrewcomplaintsaboutshipping and have at it all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anon, I just did that - http://jcrewcomplaints.blogspot.com

Also, I'm not complaining about J.Crew's shipping - I don't really have any issues with it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thank you Sweetmint for your opinion on the "correct season" for wearing animal print flats.

I just had to laugh at myself. I've never met any of the JCrew Aficionadas, yet I really value your advice!

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  78. For all of those with JC cards, my sa mentioned this past Saturday that JC planned to offer more perks for cardholders. If that's true, you'll have to let us know what those perks are. I hope he was right! :D

    ReplyDelete
  79. J.Crew has a customer feedback form that any of the CS representatives can fill out for you. You can call at anytime and do not have to place an order to do this. Simply tell the CSR that you want to have your input/opinion/complaint/praise placed on one of the forms and submitted. They are supposed to go to Mickey and his staff...perhaps if enough of the forms were filled out with the same issues, then some changes would be made. I don't think Mickey has any plans of changing the shipping policy at J.Crew. They stand by the line that the goods cost more to make due to where the fabric/leather/etc. comes from and that many factors go into pricing etc.

From Mickey: *so many factors go into pricing etc-eg quality/detail of our merchandise/price value/ etc-eg we use fabrics found only in high priced designer merch/shoes made in italy in factories that also make shoes for designers who charge 2-3 times as much-*

    ReplyDelete
  80. FFM - that is a very good point. I have some experience with the apparel industry, and while I think J.Crew's prices are a bit high sometimes, I know that the origin of the fabrics as well as where the product is actually manufactured can definitely inflate a product's price. And Mickey is right about many factors going into pricing - when I was first learning about this, I was amazed!

    ReplyDelete
  81. To play the devil's advocate, aren't the costs of the materials in, say, Italy (aren't the products actually all made in China?) included in the item itself? It's not like the shoes are shipped to the u.s. from Italy.

I think FFM is right - bottom line, j.crew doesn't appear to be ready to switch to flat-rate shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I believe this was part of J.Crew's slogan last fall: IF you only knew how much profit we're making on shipping, you'd know why we're not going to flat-rate shipping :-)

  84. Hi JTS and satan's little helper:

I can see where the origin and production can play a small factor, but I personally feel that nothing warrants the excessive shipping rates that J.Crew charges, even if they had to pay to have the fabric/leather transported from their secret mill in Italy to Asia for it to be sewn together. The shipping is just flat out price gouging, but it is working for them...they make a huge profit from it, and have no intention of changing what works...

  85. Someone mentioned the Fireball necklace earlier in this thread, and I received mine over the weekend, too, but I had a much different experience! Loved the fireball, the chain was shorter than I had hoped for, but I liked it well enough to keep it.

The chain is VERY thin. I wore it yesterday, and a VERY slight pull from my sweater broke it, and the fireball went rolling down the hallway! So sad!

I think I will search ebay for a Taj Mahal, which is what I really wanted in the first place. Hope this helps someone ... if you love it, just be careful!

Funny! You are so right about those pockets appearing and disappearing. I wonder if all the samples had besom pockets and they ended up different in production. I am glad if they are, because on-seam pockets are a cleaner look. And so much easier to put hands into! Has anyone see this jacket IRL?

  87. Hi, Anon @ 7:38... I know what you mean! I value everyone's opinion on here, too. J. Crew lovers share taste, so it makes sense. I have a pair of the leopard print heels from Fall 07' and I wear them throughout the four seasons. I was just looking online for some 'official' rules regarding this concern, and I can't seem to find anything other than wearing animal prints in a minimal, tasteful fashion. :)

  89. JCrew shipping fees are like the airlines charging for exit row seats, checked bags, water, etc....everybody hates 'em but what are ya gonna do about it?

  90. Whatcha gonna do? DON"T buy until its free ship, or % off. Its like the tv shopping channel, QVC, that went to free s/h on some items (never done before) to be competitive, and to get sales in this horrible economy. In many ways, we allow the retailers to do what they do by our habits.

  91. Anon at 9:16- I definitely agree with J. Crew making a profit on shipping, most companies do, even ones with flat rate shipping due to them having UPS shipping accounts. I work for an online company, and our shipping rates have become crazy expensive as well. It's definitely not fair- but I like FFM's suggestion on writing out complaints for Mickey, very pro-active.

  92. @FFM and Satan's Little Helper - I agree the prices and shipping are on the high side. But I think origin of fabric plays a little more part than we might give it credit - shipping from Italy to China for production probably has tariffs and/or duties on it - potentially both import and export - and from China to the US has tariffs and/or duties as well.

J.Crew could also use a different method of product construction, where the China manufacturers would acquire the fabric themselves (pay the tariffs/duties themselves), and most likely charge J.Crew a higher price for production, including the material costs in their price.

But bottom line - I agree with you that the product and shipping costs seem excessive at times, even for such "higher end" goods. :)

  93. Off topic but WHEN is the final sale going to be over? There are things in the sale section that I want, but being a petite AND in between sizes, I really don't want to get something I'll be stuck with if it doesn't fit! Oh, J.Crew, pretty please let us start exchanging your sale items soon!

  94. This is OT: My sister loves the look of the patent leather, bronzed twig Cate slingbacks, but would like to find a similar patent pump (conservative workplace--closed toe/heel) with a lower heel--oh, most importantly, they need to be comfortable as she is frequently walking in heels all day long, traveling for client meetings, etc. I suggested she look at the cole haan line with nike air technology. Has anyone else seen similar ALL LEATHER (SOLE, LINING AND UPPER) pumps that look close to the patent twig, leather Cate slingbacks? Thanks!

  96. Can any of you shed light as to why J. Crew has a final sale with so many restrictions? It does seem very customer unfriendly. There are several items I would order knowing that I could easily return them if they don't work. But because of the return ban, I usually refrain.

  97. Anon @ 11:15 - The Cates are beautiful! I could find two styles you could look into for your sister (I linked them from the Zappos site, but you could certainly get them elsewhere). Unfortunately, neither comes in a similar brown shade:

The "Alessia" by Christin Michaels is a 2.5" heel.

"Southern" by Stuart Weitzman is a 3" heel, but much more $$$ than the Cate.

Hope that helps! It's a bummer some heels are so sky-high that wearing them to work is totally impractical. :(

  98. I did place an order but I didn't use the code. I got a better deal by using my 15% student discount. I really think you should be able to combine them, but oh well.
