"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I want to know where all of the pretty, printed button-up perfect shirts have gone. Why do they seem to only be making the boy shirts? The boy shirts don't lay properly on my body and just make me look frumpy. I really wish they were offering a good dotted/striped/flannel/plaid perfect shirt.

  2. I don't understand why the Factory site doesn't have pics of the clothes ON models. There are a lot of things I have stopped myself from buying because it's so hard to tell what things look like.

  3. minor quibbles:

my most recent order was sent via UPS and was transferred to USPS for final delivery?! when did this start?

i wish that the website showed at least some of the models wearing tights with skirts/dresses during the winter months. the ONLY ones i see are very neutral skirts with very basic tights under the socks/tights section so i don't even get to see a whole outfit with them.

too much help? is that a bad thing? i went to the store over the weekend and tried a few things on. i think i was asked if i "needed anything" once every two minutes not to mention the "hey i found this and thought you'd like it" suggestions. i swear i tried on one skirt, asked if i needed another size, didn't even get it off yet to try on the next thing before she came back and asked how i was doing. :/

    1. Hi Miss JR and Firefighter Wife - the shipping change is new as of last week. Alexis posted about it here. When you check out, there will be an option for Economy shipping which is UPS Surepost. If you want UPS from JC to your door, you'll have to choose Standard shipping. I think whatever it defaults to at checkout depends on how much your order it.

Re: too much help - I think it's new holiday help because I noticed the same thing at my B&M. Just let me browse and don't tell me how awesome every single piece is. They'll probably be over it by Black Friday. ; )

  4. Not sure what's going on in their shipping department but I am getting different items from the same order shipped in different boxes. Its so weird. I've never had this happen before and I've been buying from JC for years. These are not even large orders (like maybe 4 items on the order). The invoices do not tell you that there are multiple boxes coming so I'm very confused now. I even received one sweatshirt in a package that had no packing order. Don't even know what order the sweatshirt is from or that I even ordered it! Anyone else having this issue??

    1. I think they are starting to ship parts of orders from stores. The other day, I received one of my items separately in one of those brown bags and it had an odd looking invoice inside, not the usual one. It was from Colorado and I don't think J Crew has a warehouse in Colorado.

    2. Happened here yesterday, too! A pair of cords arrived in a plain brown envelope, with packing slip but no indication that it was a partial shipment.

I must say that right before - or at - the start of the holiday shopping season is not a good time to start chopping and changing shipping practices. Shipping is wobbly enough without simultaneously factoring in new procedures and temporary help.

    3. So how is this working - when you get your shipping confirmation e-mail, does it show one item shipped and the rest in progress (like Gap brands) or does it look like the whole order shipped, but you receive it in pieces?

I'm with Fred - holiday is not the time to be trying out new "improvements" with shipping, especially as it gets closer to Christmas and the inevitable Surepost delay from UPS to USPS to delivery gets longer. Plus, I don't want shopworn stuff! If I wanted an item from a store, I'd do a charge-send.

    4. It is beyond frustrating. I received a partial shipment from a small order last week and have yet to receive the rest of the shipment. It is coming from California -across the country. That makes absolutely no sense to me. This cannot be effective shipping. The items had better not be shopworn!

    5. Same experience with my last two orders. I had almost forgotten about the a I ordered because it didn't come with the rest of my purchases, but then lo and behold there is a sad plain brown envelope on my porch a week later. It had hanger "points" on the shoulders ... clearly, retail stock.

One of the few justifications I've made over the years to justify paying for shipping was the promise of fresh, crisp new items sealed up from the warehouse,

In what condition will all these J. Crew bejeweled, fragile, and lint-magnetic fabric blend items arrive now, shopworn from a retail store across the country, packaged and shipping via 2-3 carriers? During the holiday season to boot!

    7. Yeah, if your item comes from a store, check the back for pinholes in case it was pinned on a mannequin.

    8. Hi! I spoke to a customer service rep today, and she explained that when an item is sold out online, they automatically are looking for it in a store, hence the items shipping separately. The used to cancel the item and give you the option to find in store, and now they do it automatically. I think it's a great service, provided that items are not "shop worn" as someone else mentioned.

    9. I got a large-ish box yesterday that had one bottle of nail polish in it. too silly. I am just waiting for the crazy warehouse mix ups that I kept running into last holiday season--a pink clutch instead of a headband, a girl's polka dot tunic instead of a woman's skirt...

  5. I also had some store items shipped and like ruffles, they had hanger marks. The packing slips were also beyond mangled, when I ended up returning the item I almost wanted to apologize at how bad it looked.

  6. I don't think their inventory system is so bad that all of these items that are shipping separately would have been "we are sorry to inform you items". I haven't ordered anything since September 21st. ( a new record!) so I have no personal experiences to offer. I did cave today and placed an order since no final sale so I will be able to comment soon. While I love the fall offerings, I have decided that I don't really need anything after a massive closet cleanout except for some LINED wool cafe capris but that's another vent! I can't see how this method could possibly be saving them money. How is it cheaper to ship an order piecemeal separately from several stores rather than in one package. from a warehouse. I may start doing more charge sends if we are going to end up with store merchandise anyway. At least I can ask the retail SA to eyeball it first and make sure it is in good condition.

    1. I agree. Something is definitely wrong wirh their inventory management. Several of my orders are delayed so that they can find items in stores. As items are found, they are shipped separately. In my experience, these are all sale items subject to the 40% off code. Maybe it's their new way of liquidating sale merchandise. It does seem inefficient.

  7. I have a random question--the scallop trim minis were on the regular jcrew website until a week or so ago at which point they disappeared. a seemingly identical product (name, color, price...) is now for sale on the factory website. is this the exact same item or is it a same season jcrew factory knock off?!

    1. I've seen a similar thing with a few of the retail items. The swoop dress, for example, shows up on the factory site with the same item number, stock photos, description, etc. However, when you try to add the item to your bag, it won't let you check out. I actually called customer service about it, because I was trying to purchase the swoop dress, and they seemed utterly bewildered by the concept of retail items showing on the factory website and finally offered to do a store search.

  8. New promo good November 7-16: 25% off $100+ with code GOSHOP

Picked up some good deals in store today (cords, a tie, and a shirt) all at 40% off plus the educator discount. I had good service at the Old Orchard Store in Skokie, Illinois, but unfortunately had to return a trench coat that ripped where the button was on it on the first use!

  9. I bought the liberty shorts vintage pajama set and when I received it, the shorts were missing!!! So annoying because I stalked the website for weeks until they were available. Anyway, I returned them and kept stalking the website until they had some more. I ordered for a 2nd time and when I got them, the shorts were missing AGAIN!!! So I've given up!
