J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

It looks as though J.Crew had a mini-update to its website today (click here to view online). (Please correct me if I am mistaken.)

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, but not the J.Crew Collection (click here).

The latest Fall/October catalog (click here to view) is still not available to view. Not sure when that is going to be available.

There are a few things I really like. First, the Perfect shirt in Black Watch (Item 23696; $88.00). The colors are perfect for Fall and Winter. Second, I love the Peplum Stripe Top (Item 30589; $58.00). The silhouette is just darling. Can't wait to see both of these pieces in person!

What items are you most excited about and why? Which items are you surprised (or not surprised) to see? Which items did you hope would be included? Were you expecting a bigger roll-out today? Also, did you receive the latest catalog? :)

  1. The ds hacking jacket it out, yay! Hope they add more colors later. Tempted by the mint but really, how practical is that? And would my 18 or 20 year old self have called it an old lady jacket? Probably.

The vivid peri color is pretty, but not in a jacket (that really IS an old lady color jacket), and I will say that I picked up a ds wool pencil skirt in that color, a sample, last month... so it may be coming out in the skirt, too. I hope so, because it is really nice in the skirt!

The peplum stripe top looks like it belongs in the crewcuts section. I don't know why I think that... it just strikes me as a little girl top!

    1. I think it's because of the size of the "peplum". In fact, I wouldn't even call that a peplum, I'd call it a ruffle.

    2. I totally agree about the ds hacking jacket colors. They all scream grandma to me, and even though I'm in my mid-20's I don't think I could pull it off, even in an ironic way! Hope they come out with some richer jewel tone colors.

Haha about the "peplum top". The ruffle is at least 5 inches too short! Definitely not a peplum in my book.

      Delete
    3. Exactly. Looks like a 'ruffle hem tee', not a true peplum shape.

    4. I'm happy the hacking is out in the ds fabric...I ordered the peri--don't think it's old lady. I tried the hacking in herringbone and liked the shape but the fabric was thin/prone to wrinkling and horrendously itchy on me. Hoping the ds version works out.

  2. I bit on the Cocoon coat in Dublin Green - I've been thinking about it since seeing it on the outerwear landing page last week.

I also took a pair of the honeycomb pants - they're unlined so I feel like it is already a return.

    1. The honeycomb pants are unlined at that price?! I know I don't need to point out how ridiculous that is, but it does make you wonder what they were thinking when they set the price point - not to mention that unlined fall/winter pants in general are a poor idea. Don't cut costs in manufacturing but continue to jack up prices; your customers are bound to notice.

      Delete
    2. The site doesn't say that they are lined so I'm assuming that they are not. I ordered both the jeweled jacquard ($198) and the leopard embroidered ($298) last year and they were both unlined. Both went back promptly with complaints to the store.

I don't know why I chance it - I just love a great embellished pant.

You can tell by the number of jade jacquard pants left at the store that they are poorly made as well. I ordered and returned - while I was there, someone else returned as well!

  3. The only thing I was excited about was the tipped double serge wool hacking jacket which was online this morning but has since been taken off the site.

I did manage to clip it to Polyvore before they took it down though. You can see the two colors here and here. The first color was called "mink" or something like that and the second is navy.

    1. Thanks for catching this Cate O! I have the version from last year (grey with white tipping) and it is by far one of my most favorite fall/winter jackets! I was wondering if the tipped version would be back this year, especially after the sneak peek of the solids. I love the double serge fabric (at least, the double serge of years past... hope it is as good this year!).

And a navy jacket is on my shopping list this season, so I am excited too! I did just purchase the navy schoolboy using style25 (after trying many other navy blazers from other retailers) but may have to hold out and reconsider for this one!

      Delete
    2. Love the navy tipped jacket. I have the navy Ivy blazer but I feel like they are different enough that I can justify it. Of course, I have very little problem justifying most of my Crew purchases!

I also am curious about the velvet jeans in rustic brick but they could be a total trainwreck on me. ;-)

  4. oh it is so freaking weird this morning, in addition to the new color double serge hecking jacket, I actually saw a new tipped double serge hecking jacket in Navy with White trim and it also comes in another colorway call Mink (its like light brown with navy trims) thats priced at $298, they look like the past season tipped blazer or the old "lexington" jacket. I put it in my cart for the Navy one but roughly about 30 mins later the item disappeared from the site, anyone noticed that? I doubt that it was sold out, somehow JC made a mistake and didnt intent to release that jacket at this rollout so we can use the 25% promo?

THAT annoys me to no end.

  5. Cate O - we must have replied at the same time!I am so annoyed with them taking it off the site!

  6. I love plaid shirts for fall, but I already own several so I probably shouldn't buy that one...

  7. Love the blush velvet toothpick's :)

  8. Is the peacock necklace new? I LOVE it! I don't own anything like it and I want to order it despite the high price. Oy.

I continue to be unimpressed with the dresses and shoes this season...

  9. Some pictures of things aren't showing up for me :( I love the Cocoon coat, but going to wait until it is on sale...coats always are at some point. (Side note: I scored a PERFECT Holiday 07 bright flame wool Grammercy coat on eBay, for $65, so I'm satisfied with coats atm!). Velvet pants!?! Velvet pants! Just ordered a pair in tall navy!

  10. What color do we think the mauve blush velvet pants actually are? I'm intrigued by the light light pink that shows up in the initial photo, but unsure about the more saturated mauve that seems to show up in the enlarged color photo.

    1. Usually the photos on the models are washed out. I would go by the other photo (search velvet pants, for those who are wondering), which is usually more realistic. I will try to see a pair in person and post about them.

  11. That double serge Hacking blazer in Mint looks like a dupe of a Smythe blazer from last season but for half the price (and half the quality probably). Hope the Toronto store gets it in person.

  12. I bit on the cocoon coat too - in boring black, but I don't want to stress myself out having to match my coat to everything. I also am going to try the calf hair satchel - boy is it adorable. I've wanted it since I read FFMs review.....

  13. So curious about the velvet pants. I'll have to try them on since I've really not done well with JC pants in general.

So curious about the new jackets. Wish they were online to inspect.

Totally OT, but the eyelet Schoolboy in my size popped back on FS this morning. Hoping it fits as, well, it was FS.

    3. I can't help but think the same thing as Unknown. These feel like an icky trend that was done before and is still done by the matronly section @ Talbots. I'm not sold.

  14. Can't seem to find any of the new updates, or maybe they're just not interesting to my eye so they're not jumping out? I really want to order either the snake-print blouse or the honeycomb blouse with the 25% off, but even after the discount I find these items to be ridiculously overpriced. It's like part of me wants to order them just so I can see in person that they're a ripoff and remove them from my wishlist, but the more realistic part of me realizes there's a good chance I'll love them and keep them. High priced chiffon is just so hard to rationalize; all you need is a piece of jewelry or even the zipper of your pants or skirt to snag it once and it's forever ruined. I do, however, want to reorder the Jackie pullover in an XS since I think the look of the XXS is a tad too snug for my liking (I stalked it at 6:00 this morning for the 2nd color I purchased to pop back in XS, but no luck) so I may bite the bullet and order one of the blouses to fill out my order. Trying so hard to behave but it's not easy! I love a lot of pieces this season but the price points are hard to justify.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm having some issues with the "Collection" pieces this year. I just feel like they really aren't better quality than the regular pieces. Unlined honeycomb pants that that price? Boo. The pleated maxiskirt was unlined to and a polly jersey knit, hem was raw and the zippers and hook closure were just like any other JC item. The few Collection items that I'm really interested in are just outrageously priced. Yes, I want the leather skirt and suede leggings and also the houndstooth popover...but I don't want to spend an entire paycheck for 3 items. Sigh.

  18. I noticed they changed the style on the Boulevard trench this year. I am not a fan of the flap pockets, the older version looked a lot sleeker.

Is it just me or did they lower the price on the Brushed cashmere popover? I thought it was about $200 CDN more than it is showing today. Not that I'm buying it, I still think the price is outrageous for something that looks like polar fleece.

Sorry for the delete and repost, my links got messed up.

    1. I agree -- I was not a fan of the huge pockets, and I definitely hated the "raglan" cut with the sleeves this year. So disappointed -- I loved the old version and would get one in every color if I could!

    2. Ugh, the boulevard trench is SO ugly this year. Sad. I have a plum one from 2009 that is still in perfect shape so I don't need one anyway... but it still saddens me when they screw up such a good item.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, they should've just renamed that coat because it is so not the boulevard trench. Why must you mess with your popular items, JC?

      Delete
    4. I am glad I got mine in 2010, the pockets are awful and does not look like a trench anymore. I like raglan pockets because I have narrow shoulders but I think they are more appropriate on more casual coats like Elements coat (that I also have).

  20. I love their stadium trenches... I've purchased one every year for the last few years. The new stadium trench they released this morning has some interesting colors (I like the charcoal and neptune green colors in particular), but the design is so ugly this year that I'm going to have to pass on that this year. I hate the sleeves and the buttons stop at the waist (there are only three sets of them, it appears). I absolutely hate the raglan sleeves (wtf, a winter trench coat should not look like a baseball tee), and I'm not a fan of the huge pockets either.

    1. SAME! I have the previous year's stadium trench, which I love. However, looking at this year's "update" I would pass. Raglan sleeves, oversized pockets...it just looks uncomfortable. ewww.

  22. Provided it didn't just hit the website this morning as I just noticed it, has anyone tried the stretch suiting tank yet? My curiosity has been piqued. I used to love their favorite tanks until they changed the cut and made them so thin that my bra shows through and every single one I've purchased has gotten a hole on the first or second wearing - although to make something good out of a bad situation, I do enjoy them to sleep in! Anyway, would love to hear thoughts on the new suiting tank.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dara,
I recently received the stretch suiting tee in black and white. I'm returning both. The black is okay, but not worth the price IMO. (I was hoping it could replace a very worn out James Perse tee, but it just isn't on the same level of quality.) The white is completely sheer. I realize that it's meant to be worn under a suit, but a sheer "suiting" item is just too ironic.

      Delete
    2. Susan, thanks! That's really helpful. I will definitely pass then unless they go on super sale. I already have plenty of sheer, low quality layering tanks that I got for under $6 at H&M ;)

      Delete
    3. Susan, how do those tees run? How is the neckline and are they the type highlighting every bulge? Also, how long are they, can you wear them untucked over pencil skirt? I am forever looking for a fitted black top that will be somewhat forgiving and that can be work untucked, most are too exposing and too long (I am 5'6), so they bunch up at the bottom.

      Delete
    4. I don't remember them being too long (but I'm also used to shirts being long as I'm only 5'2"). The neck was more scoop than crew, but not terribly low. They are tight, though I ordered the smaller of my two sizes. Black was more forgiving than white of course, but both were fairly forgiving. I can take pictures before I return them on Monday if anyone's interested! HTH!

    5. Oh, I would love to see the pictures if you can take them. Maybe you can email them to the email on my profile or post a link. TIA!

  25. Has anyone tried the collection Italian wool dress in the lime green? I managed to grab a popback this morning but it is in my smaller dress size and I am worried it won't fit now. I called and got measurements and it seems like it is really fitted through the shoulders, chest and waist. What was your experience trying it on?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have it and it fits TTS IMO. It depends if your smaller dress size is your usual size or not. To be more clear, I am usually a 0 but sometimes I size down to a 00 ( ex. blouson dress). In this case the 00 would have been too small. Hope it helps!

  29. Just tried on my new Wintress puffer and what a disappointment! It fits TTS but it's just ugly and cheap looking, for lack of a more eloquent description. I have the same coat from holiday '08 - which cost a bit less back then - and the difference in quality is night and day. My old one is covered in stains from all the snowy winters it withstood and I can't find a suitable replacement anywhere! I even tried an Alice & Olivia puffer from Bluefly that I've had my eye on since it was full price at the department stores last year, and that too turned out to be awful because it was designed with a ridiculous collar that juts out 6 inches from the back of your neck and looks like a hood they forgot to finish sewing. Quite frustrated at the moment... I really need a warm coat for this winter! Seems like I'm not going to find one at JC if the Wintress isn't doing it for me.

    1. Just a thought... has anyone ever tried Dryel on a down filled coat? I don't trust dry cleaners in Manhattan (in my many experiences, they charge a fortune and don't actually clean your clothes) and I suppose I can't ruin it worse, right?

      Delete
  30. Dara, I wash my down filled coats. I have long J.Crew down puffer (I think it is from 2009) and I have washed it at least 5 times. It comes out perfectly. I have also washed my down north face short coat, which I have had since 2003, probably 25 times or more, and it still looks new. I just used the gentle cycle and yes, it goes right in the dryer too to fluff it up. Sometimes you have to put it on low for quite a long time, but eventually it gets dry and fluffs right back up.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wash my down items as well. I use the gentle cycle with liquid soap for gentle washing (ivory baby wash, woolite, etc.). For larger items I put them through the wash once without any soap to soak everything down thoroughly, then do the normal wash cycle.

I dry in the dryer with tennis balls to fluff up the down. I also take them out and shake them a few times to loosen up the down and turn things inside out for a while in the dryer too. I've even washed my king size duvet but have taken it out for a day in between drying sessions to shake it up and let the moisture disburse. I would never take down-filled items to the dry cleaner personally, much rather do them myself.

If you end up with a lot of static after washing and drying, try THIS easy and cost-effective solution. HTH

    2. Just chiming in Dara to say I wash my Wintress puffer, 2 or 3 years old I'm guessing, all the time! It still looks new. I just washed it the other day to freshen it up after being in storage. I wash it on a short cycle in warm/cold with a delicate wash soap and then just throw it in the dryer, turns out perfect.

      Delete
    3. I've washed my Mexx puffer jacket MANY times (since it's white) on the regular clothes cycle. I used tennis balls in the drying cycle. This pounds the down if it clumps up during the wash. Works like a charm.

  44. How did I never know that down coats can be washed? I did wash a big down comforter once at the laundromat, but that was due to an immediate need (my darling cat had an accident I was displeased to discover). Wondering if my old puffer will fit in my little apartment-size washer dryer... otherwise it's off to the laundromat! So excited to make an old beloved coat new again, particularly in light of the fact that this year's version simply isn't as nice or well made.

I decided last night that all of the outerwear I ordered needs to go back, with the exception of the quilted herringbone vest which I can't decide on - usually a good sign I shouldn't keep it. I love the tipping on it which the solid colors don't have, but I've never been a fan of busy prints near my face (fine on skirts) and honestly, even if I put a big sweater under it, it's still a little boxy for my tiny frame even in size XXS. I decided after some consideration that the snowcap jacket is going back too, for two reasons. First, it's boxy and I like a more tailored fit. Second, I have a short neck and I don't love the way it looks unzipped but when it is zipped it looks like the gold zipper hardware is dangling directly from my chin like an odd piece of jewelry. Maybe no one else would see me in it and think that, but now I'm stuck with that imagery. Oh, well. Glad I tried them and reduced my wishlist.
