J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  4. Review of Jeweled sweatshirt and not yet online jeweled wool navy short sleeve top HERE.
Both are nice and the wool blouse is very pretty but I am just not that crazy about bedazzling everything.
I also reviewed Checked Colorblock Mini Skirt HERE (nice but way too shrt) and new Heart Throb silk boy shirt in black and white HERE (very pretty and worth considering if you haven't bought orange/navy version).

    1. I love the slim trench on you! I don't think I'd get much wear out of it either with Illinois winters. I'm really starting to liove the Heart Throb shirt. Thx for the reviews ladies!

    2. The clothes looked great on you, Cate O! Yea, I too liked the Heart Throb shirt. As usual, I was slow to getting the one from last Spring...is it made of silk material? Thanks for the reviews.

    3. @JSR - yes, both this year's and last year's version are 100% silk

  6. Does anyone have any comments on the multicolor tweed jacket? It's still relatively new, and the website says it's online/catalog only. Thanks to anyone who has any reviews of it!

    4. Ok, this is very strange. In my last two shipments I got 4 codes for 20% off of $150 or more. I have kept one for myself, posted the other three here.

The three I posted here don't work, but the one I kept for myself does.

Does anyone think that JCrew monitors the postings here and cancelled the Codes?

      Aaron

    5. Likely, whoever used the codes above didn't reply to say they used one.

      Delete
    6. Aaron, something similar happened to me. During the cardholder promo I received three different cardholder codes at three different e-mail addresses. I used one, gave one to a JCA via private e-mail, and kept a third for myself. After I used the first one, the other two did not work. I should add that the fine print did NOT say one per customer. When I called, CS wouldn't honor the third code.

  11. I got the Jade Jacquard cafe capris- I think they fit true to size, just a smidge tight, but that could be just me. The pattern is so pretty- kind of shimmery in spots and different shades of green. I really like them. If you can get them on sale ( I used the last cardholder promo for them) they are even prettier! ;)

  14. Got my hands on the Allie dress in aqua floral - as others have said, this dress is probably going to be too short for anyone over 5'5" . On me (5'4") it's a couple inches above the knee but I'm going to take it to the tailor to let the hem down to gain another inch. This dress is an incredible bargain right now - at the current sale price and additional 30% off, it comes to about $49. The pure silk fabric and the print is stunning in real life, it is very reminiscent of old school J. Crew. I took the size 4, which is my usual dress size these days, and it fits perfectly. My figure is boyish (little waist definition, narrow hips) so this style is very flattering on as it gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. Two thumbs up!

Off topic, this is the last day to enter the J. Crew-themed giveaway on my blog - enter to win a J. Crew canvas shopping bag, the Poppy King lipstick and a 20% off $150+ coupon, link here. Thanks everyone!

  15. I tried the Colorblock Check Mini in-store yesterday and actually really liked it. I went up two sizes from my pencil skirt size so it would sit lower and it actually worked much better than expected - it gave me some much-needed extra length without adding tons of volume to the skirt. I'm 5'9 and it came to about 5 inches above the top of my knee, but I think I could get about another 1.5" by letting down the hem, and at my casual office I would be okay with that length as long as I was wearing tights.

I think it will look adorable with a variety of sweaters, button down shirts, boots and pumps. I am going to watch the inventory online and wait for sale if possible, but I might end up buying it with my cardholder code (not the one that came via email, this is the one that they mailed to Canadian cardholders).

  16. Just received my brompton mini hobo in rainforest green and am a bit disappointed. I had gone to the store multiple times to admire it and loved the deep rich color. I finally took the plunge and ordered it and what I got was a huge disappointment compared to what was in store. The leather is unevenly dyed and there is a weird spot on the bottom that almosts looks like a big water stain. The stitching on the front that holds the pleats together is already pulling. Overall, i was expecting better, maybe this is just a fluke, but I was really expecting better after being so impressed with the one in the store.

  17. This might come a bit late in the season but if any of you has still her eyes on the vintage short-sleeve pajama set I say to go for it. Since it is wailisted until end of October I thought I would give a quick review so that you can decide if you want to wait that long and order the correct size (when I ordered mine it was waitlisted until August 6th and it shipped around that time). I initially ordered the white in my regular pajama size, a xxs. I usually need a xxs in Jcrew pajamas because of the length (I am petite). However, the xxs was definitively too small and cropped (even on me), so I reordered it in a xs and it fits much better (it is a bit loose in the waist/hips but because it is a pajama that's fine). The cotton is very soft and high quality and it feels wonderful against the skin. I washed in the machine and it came out perfect. And my husband keeps complimenting me around the house which is a big bonus. Definitively one of the best things that I bought this year.

    1. That's funny Ema, I have it too and love it (Iin white). I think this is the only thing this year I bought at full price. You make me feel better because I though I was crazy to pay so much for pajamas.

  20. Anyone try the Snowcap Quilted Jacket?. I'm wondering how heavy a layer you can wear under it. Thanks.

    1. I have a review of it here. It's quite warm without having to layer a lot, IMO. But it's not a winter jacket.

      Delete
    2. Thanks, Rose. How heavy a layer did you have under it? Would it work with a long sleeve sweater or just a tee; for example the Perfect fit tee?

      Delete
    3. Depends on how the jacket fits you. I tried the Medium and it was roomy with a t-shirt, but I couldn't have worn a heavy sweater under it. Maybe a Tippi + Perfect Shirt would be as much as you could put under it.

I liked it but ended up returning because I didn't need it. If I see it marked down, I might re-buy it, though. I liked it a lot, all three colors are great.

  21. I tried the Snowcap Quilted Jacket and to me it felt toasty warm. I would probably wear a long sleeve shirt or light sweater underneath depending on how cold it was. I usually wear a medium but sized up to a Large to have room in the shoulders.

  24. just bought the perfect shirt in buffalo plaid thinking it would be like the tartan shirts from last year. NOPE!!! Its flannel, not shirting material, and it has oversized black plastic buttons. The fit was fine, but I wanted another unexpected button-down and not a flannel shirt. The flannel is very thin....return!

Also bought the colorblock check mini....its very cute, and maybe runs a little small. I couldn't tell if runs small or just sits high--my normal size fits, but sits high up on my true waist. And its shorter than the one pictured online...I'm only 5'5" and even if I unzip it a little bit to pull it down, its still shorter than on the model.

  26. Has anyone tried the tortoise-button sweatshirt (solid, not the stripe one) and could tell me what the colors are like--are they really bright?
The "bright green" looks more turquoise/blue and the neon melon seems really toned down in the pictures.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I tried it on and thought it was really comfy. I would wait for a sale though. The color was more turquoise like you said. I liked the neon melon but it was a little too bright for my liking. I usually wear a large in sweatshirts and that is the size that felt good in this one. HTH

      Delete
    2. These sweatshirts were on sale at the Towson MD store over the weekend for $39.99.

I think its a tad boxy but perfect for lounging around. The bright green is definitely a light turquoise bordering on the spearmint color from a couple seasons ago

      Delete
    3. I agree with Cheryl on the colors. The bright green is really nice in person, though. What made this piece a pass for me at the time was the fit. It is a bit too boxy. I had to size up a size to give it more length. Both colors are on sale in stores for around $39.99 (I believe).

      Delete
    4. Thank you! :) Unfortunately I'm not near a store (or near the US for that matter ...), so I'll wait until it goes on sale online.

  30. Factory classic chambray shirt (91506) - for those of you that aren't chambray'ed out, this is thick and soft and quite nice. It is a very close dupe of the keeper chambray shirt (44875) with the only difference that I can tell being the pleated pockets. At almost half the price of the keeper, I'd give it a try if you're interested. It's kind of odd that some of the factory pieces are better quality than retail - or has retail just fallen so far that factory seems nice by comparison?

  34. Tried on the Origami Sheath Dress (90322) in Hammock Green--gorgeous color and fabric! Waiting for the next b&m % off to snag it...

Online it looks sort of teal/peacock, but it's much more emerald IRL--a bright green that's very flattering on pale/blue complexions, but non-challenging for warmer complexions as well. (I know because I'm sporting an awful tan right now! forget ombré hair, I'm ombré between my face and my collarbone, yikes.)

Fits surprisingly well. I'm a petite and have a very high waist, but this didn't sit as oddly on me as some other non-petite fitted dresses do (e.g. the Memo). I think it's because the waistband--you can sort of see from the photo--is supposed to hit an inch or two above the model's real wasit. For me, that means it goes right ON the waist. Would still be better if I could get it to the tailors', but def wearable as is.

  35. Thought I would add a review of the biennial medium satchel in saddle. I have been looking for a nice medium to large leather bag, but I can't go with something as big as the regular biennial, because at 5'3" it makes me look like I am carrying a piece of luggage around. I overall felt that this fit the bill size-wise and would fit everything I need most of the time--wallet, toiletry bag, checkbook, phone, etc. I like that it as divided into a large and smaller side and that there was a little slip pocket for your phone. Liked the option to use over the arm vs shoulder strap, thought the leather was good quality, and found the color true to what appears on the website. For quality, the only thing I noted was that the zippers were a bit stiff. Unfortunately, the deal breaker for me keeping this was that I couldn't fit my iPad with Dodocase in it. :(. I could have fit a caseless iPad diagonally across the big pocket, but I don't really like carrying it around caseless. So, sadly, no bag for me. Otherwise, I quite liked it and would likely have kept it.

  36. BTW, does anyone have suggestions for my Edie Attaché (caramel black, 21959)? I can't figure out how to style it and may have to send it back... all that gorgeous two-tone leather! :( But it might just be too fancy (and finicky) for me. I'm a classic dresser, but I always feel like I'm playing dress-up with that bag!

Btw, y'all were right. That leather SCRATCHES like nobody's business. So high-maintenance.

  38. In love with the inside out fair isle sweater. The blend is slightly itchy, which doesn't bother me personally but it's unfortunate because I think the itch factor will turn a lot of women off to what is otherwise a wonderfully fitting sweater which is truly unique and striking in person. I wore it on Saturday paired with the postage stamp mini in navy tweed and it may be my new favorite outfit for fall. Speaking of the mini, I noticed this morning that both that and the Nicky top went on sale for around $60 cheaper combined than what I paid two weeks ago. My original receipt isn't marked final sale due to promotional pricing, so I reordered them and plan to return with my original receipt. I rarely play pricing games as a consumer - frankly, I was happy with the items at the price I paid or I wouldn't have - but $60 is $60, I just ordered on 9/3 and I was placing a new order today anyway (at 6am no less) so I felt it made sense. Besides, I'm sure the $60 I get back will go to J.Crew in the form of an exchange ;)

I also ordered two more wool pencil skirts, the No. 2 in festival blue and the herringbone in manor purple. I received the berry pink from the last sale promo and the camel color from the cardholder promo and love the fit. I wore the pink yesterday with the sale wool scarf (beige with pink and purple flowers) and a Tippi sweater in flax and I felt like it was really a great look for fall that I'm excited to wear again and again.

Some other items I picked up in the last 2 weeks: the collection cashmere polka dot sweater - love the colors, the relaxed but not too relaxed fit and the bracelet sleeves - the Tippi sweater in colorblock stripe, the multicolor tweed pencil skirt (now $79.99 in-store) and the midrise toothpick jean in carbon. I tend to stay away from JC denim because I can't deal with low rise given my long torso and short legs, but when I saw that they were offering a midrise version I had to try it. I love these but I must warn about the length. I believe they are supposed to hit just above the ankle, but they are only slightly long on me and I'm 5'3" so I imagine they'd be quite short on someone tall. That said, I find the fit true to size and quite flattering, so I would definitely recommend these to anyone of average height. Also, while I understand that JC is not a denim company and Madewell carries a greater selection, given the price points, I would love to see select styles offered in various inseams. It's certainly easier to shorten pants than to lengthen them, but when it comes to jeans, I hate losing the bottom edge.

Much as others feel that the current collection is not a true "collection", I'm finding that all of the items I've purchased for fall pair together wonderfully and have actually inspired me to think outside the box and change up my style a bit which I'm enjoying. I do agree that the starting price points are too high but that's another topic.

    ReplyDelete

  39. Question about coats: I've yet to try any of JC's wool coats with thinsulate, and right now I'm considering the lady day coat or the metro coat but when I zoom in on the details, I suspect I may be disappointed with the stitching/quality as has been the case with my last 3 JC coats (all of which were backordered for months and arrived defective). I'm also wondering just how warm they are, given that I live in NY where it gets quite chilly. Also, can anyone shed some light on the differences between the retail long puffer and the factory version? I have the retail version from 4 years ago and it needs replacing, but given the tempting price of the factory version I'm wondering if I should try it. I considered ordering it this morning but it wouldn't add to my cart :/ However, if the retail version is much thicker/warmer, I may be better off replacing my old puffer with another of the same. Would love some advice! I love fall and winter coats and somehow I'm never happy with the ones I buy (see: last year's flared perfect coat whose side seams ripped open within a week or two).

(Sorry for the multiple posts; I couldn't submit it all at once on account of my verbal diarrhea exceeding the character limit.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey Dara. The thinsulate is thicker and much much heavier, but I didn't find it sufficient for NYC winters... I opt for an ankle length puffer coat from Esprt on the really cold days. When my lady day coat w/ thinsulate needed to be replaced (too small cuz I kept layering fleece hoodies underneath, the underarm lining was ripped to the point I was embarrassed to take off my coat), I just got a regular jcrew wool coat for the milder days. My main issue was the weight... It's so much heavier without enough warmth. With heavy boots and bag, I'd rather not have to "carry" my coat too.

      Delete
    2. If you love one of the costs I'd recommend sizing up and wearing a big sweater underneath, it's what I do on the coldest days. I actually done feel like the thinsulste does anything, but maybe I'd feel differently if my coat didn't have it. I Actually wonder if it is in there and the tag is lying to me. The lady day coats do fit snug around the hips, and that isn't completely obvious from the pictures. I think the quality is good though and get lots to compliments.

      Delete
    3. Costs?! Coats, I meant. That whole post was full of errors, thanks Apple predictive text. Hopefully you can decipher it!

      Delete
    4. Thank you both so much for your insight! I'm not a fan of super, super heavy coats, especially if the warmth doesn't justify the weight, so I think I may try a lady day coat without thinsulate for the fall and then look for something light but extremely warm like a puffer for those really, really cold days. Sadly the factory puffer is now sold out in my size, but since I can't tell the difference between that and the retail one and I'm just looking to replace my '09 version which seems identical to this year's, I'll stalk it for a while or wait for the retail one to go on sale :)

  40. They just delivered my navy Stubbs & Wootton shoes. I'm so in love! Completely comfortable, TTS and I ordered a navy Isabel and a cardigan to go with them and jeans. So happy! The box says Stubbs & Wootton palm beach on it. I don't know if the green or burgundy ones would be as cute but these little lions are adorable, even my sons think they're cool! Very comfortable right out of the box. I'm normally and 8.5 to 9, a 9 in JC (except Vivs, 9.5) and I ordered 9. Love!

  44. I finally broke down and tried the bubble necklace. I really like the white one and am now a bubble necklace fan. I thought it might be too big for me but it actually wasn't as big as I expected. I am keeping the white one even though the clasp is a little shoddy. Since it was on sale I know it would be hard to exchange it, so I'm hoping the clasp will hold up.

Painter boatneck - I sized up from my usual tee size because I found the arms tight. I really like the neon fuschia color which is not neon IRL.

I also ordered another pair of cafe capris. I found they ran larger than my others (from the spring) in the legs and rear. The tag says Fall12 so I'm wondering if it's a fluke or if they made them bigger. I prefer the fit of my other ones. I wish the sizing was more consistent.

I actually hope that they add more colors to the long-sleeve version. I ordered the ivory too (that now is sold-out) but I thought the color was more suited to a long-sleeve version (in terms of season). Love, love, love the white, I hope I can keep it immaculate for as long as possible, which can be challenging with a 5-year-old around.

  51. Sterling Skirt in Retro Jade: Took my normal size in petites 6P (I’m usually a 4 in skirts). At 5’3, this skirt falls just above my knees. The A line shape isn’t too exaggerated, which I prefer, especially on my body type. Material is nice…on par of wool skirts from previous seasons. And gorgeous color too…just have to think of what to wear with it.

Toothpick Cord in Cabernet: Ugh…sizes are all over the place with the cords this year. My normal size is 29 and these where so tight I couldn’t even close the button. But when I tried the 29s on in a different color, they were perfect and the 30s were huge in the cabernet. I think this color has a bit of a brown undertone in person..not as pretty as online, but still a good neutral. Beware of sizing here…

  53. Has anyone seen or tried on the Factory wool blend pencil skirt in viridian green? How does the color compare to last year's retail version? If anyone has tried the skirt on in 00, I'd be interested to know if that size is also running small -- last year's retail 00 was too big for me.
    Thank you!

    1. I tried it on, but I never tried last year's retail to compare it with. I would say it runs a little small, though, and it may be a more heathered looking version of the original, which I actually prefer. It's very pretty. I wear a bigger size so can't help with the 00 specifics.

  56. OT but WWD reported that after Gwyneth Paltrow's J. Crew post on Goop, the J.Crew website had an increase in activity:
"Eight percent of all our traffic since we launched with Gwyneth is being driven by Goop. That’s amazing,” a J. Crew spokeswoman said Friday.

    1. Wow, J.Crew's marketing skills paid off. I just hope JC doesn't keep this trend up, hiring celebrities to endorse their brand.

  58. Finally got the Downtown Field Jacket, after admiring it all last year. I love it. The navy is a nice blue shade, not 'maybe black'. My usual size fits well with room to layer a medium weight sweater. The length of the sleeves is a bit too long; covering about 1.5" of my hand. I'm 5'3" and have short arms. It's easy to cuff the sleeves, but I find the added length helps keep my hands warm.

    1. I love my navy one too. It is not very " water resistant" though. Looks great with black or olive so far.

  60. I ordered the Barbour Beadnell Jacket and it's a surprise love. This jacket is primarily why I returned the Snowcap Quilted Jackets - I just like this better and it suits my needs. It's so dark navy that it's almost black. It is lined, but not too heavy (I wouldn't mind if it were heavier, actually). I like the way it fits. I don't know how to properly describe the shoulders, but they are not gusseted like most coats like this, they are like a raglan sleeve. Nice big pockets. It has an extra zipper inside of it, so you can zip it twice (can't imagine ever doing this though). Lining is a nice plaid flannel. The back has vents with snaps (can't imagine using these either). I like the feel and fit and weight of the coat, it's very nice.

  61. Has anyone tried the Factory Winnie pant? I belive that it's the factory version to the Minnie. I have the Minnie in several colors and love it. The Winnie is available in the beautiful Casablanca blue color and I am beyond tempted. Does the Winnie fit like the Minnie? What are the differences/similarities between the two? Should I take the same size as I do in the Minnie?

    2. Thank you so much Silver. I'm going to get the two colors that I do not yet have, the casablanca and pewter. Love those pants and I guess this is one of those times that my short stature works in my favor when it comes to clothing.

    3. The only difference I noticed is that the Winnie is at least an inch shorter than the Minnie. I had to let out my Winnies.

    4. I just purchased the Winnie and had to size up from the Minnie - though, it could be the fabric difference (twill v. wool).

  63. I was pleased to see the Etta Patent Pumps and Everly Satin T-Strap Pumps marked down today.

I recently ordered the Etta Patent Pump a few weeks ago, but didn't make the 7 days price adjustment, so I will return the ones I have now, and reordered it using the extra 30% LOVEIT code. You can't beat the price of $300 for two pairs of Italian made J.Crew shoes! :)

I love the Etta Patent Pump, but we'll see how the Everly Satin T-Strap's color look IRL. I'm not too thrilled about the Vibrant Fuchsia color, but if it goes well, I think it will look good with navy. I am not fond of the prints offered on the Everly silk T-Straps, so the Vibrant Fuchsia was my only option. Oh well at least its not final sale...

    1. I checked and only saw the Etta patent in bright persimmon and green cap toe satin are on sale. The regular Etta patent are still full price.

I am on the edge for Everly T strap in pink as well. I think the color may be too bright. On the other hand, I am absolutely in love with the Everly T strap in print. The variety color in the print actually goes with almost anything IMO. I just got in with the 20% promo but will be pouncing on a sale as well.

    2. Hi IMI, Yea the Etta Patent is the one I own. Its super neon bright. I fell in love with it the first time I saw Jenna wearing it to the CFDA. She paired it with Spring 13's stripe navy pants and jewel encrusted light blue button-up shirt..and it looked cute. Ive never own shoes this wild, so to buy it on sale, its a deal!

If i were to choose between an Everly print, I'd go with the Sweet Orange-the one with the snakeskin cap toe...who knows, if it goes on sale by then within 60 days, I can return the Fuchsia color and buy the Everly in Sweet Orange. It does go well with so many things.

  64. I just received the optic dot boat neck in navy. I was so disappointed. Material felt stiff and rough - looked like same material used by JoFresh clothes. Not sure if this an attempt to make clothes tougher so tiny holes don't appear in front like so many of my other JCrew tees.
Fit TTS and would have went ok with veridian green wool skirt from last year but is a RETURN for me!
