J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  2. I just check the website and after seen the FREESHIP code came finally the 30% off FS "MUSTSHOP"!

  3. (Alexis-I posted this accidentally in the sought and found post- so feel free to delete this if it if you want!)I went on Monday, and my store was running an additional 30% off. They had a small sale section with lots of Striped Jules dresses and and Cece grape flats. I debated and finally bought a long blue and green floral silk scarf with a gift card. When I came home I realized that I posted about the same scarf in July- I guess I really have had my eye on it for a while! It matches both my camel and navy coat perfectly. The silk is medium weight, and self fringed on the short end. It is machined hemmed, not hand rolled like the summer scarves. It is the same length as the wool scarves. It is pretty however, and was worth the sale price, IMO. (Picture at the bottom of this post
On Trend Orchids- I don't see it online, but I know they had plenty in store.)

  5. Can someone please please please review the Emmett boots.... Being that I live in Canada and it's a bit of a hassle to return from here, I don't want to pull the trigger until I get some non-partisan opinions/info. Based on the online photos, they look like they may be a little too "rugged"(ei: cheap?). I'm interested in the extended calf ones, but that doesn't really matter.
Also, does anyone have anything to say about this season's cashmere? Has the quality improved at all?

  7. It's nice to see the 30% promo. I had a feeling it was coming. I have my eye on a couple things, but will likely wait a day or two. I'm still excited about getting the port of call sweatshirt on sale.

Check out links to irl pics of sale items in this post.

  8. Just bought crewcuts this round..it's not often one can get a $69 dress for $11 and some change :) . Nice to see a promo though that everyone can share, not just cardholders!

  9. The hacking jacket just arrived, I got the size 4 which is my usual jacket size. I really love the shape but the quality isn't that great, the tweed is far too thin for that style of jacket and I doubt I'll get more than a couple of years out of it, that said, it will be a great every day jacket for me, and my focus now is on trying to build up my ordinary every day clothes - nothing, I have nothing!

The abstract floral was a wonderful surpruse and I highly recommend it!

  13. I have an obsession with older J. Crew jackets and I have been looking for a newer style to fall into. Alas, the schoolboy blazer in wool herringbone is not it. I found the fabric to be super itchy and insubstantial. The buttons are very light weight and the cresting on them subpar. The one positive was the lining. I just can't get behind these schoolboy blazers. Maybe I should just stop comparing them to the old Robert Noble blazers.

  14. Reviewed the Cabochon Fan Necklace in Spearmint here. Lots more reviews from the September and August rollouts on my blog.

  15. Does anyone know when the next rollouts will be out? I am really hoping for some new pump options. I love several of the styles out right now (Mona, Everly, Valentina) but not loving the color selection in the leathers. TIA!

  16. I reviewed several items back in July, some of which are now on sale or promo. The review posts are here, here, and here.

Since the extra 30% off is in effect now, I also want to mention that the Women's and Men's lists of Promo-priced items (some of which have been marked down) can be accessed on the sidebar of my blog.

    1. Thanks for the reviews. I truly need NOTHING, but I've been wanting a blue wool skirt for ages and both of those look so cute on you that I caved and ordered both of the blue skirts. I added the gold, which I haven't seen IRL or reviews, and the elephant bracelet. I rationalized that they aren't final sale, so I can always return...

    2. Yes, thank you these reviews! I especially found helpful on the matching aspect of the different colors of skirts. So nice to see the festival blue is more vibrant in irl than online.

  21. Finally tried the classic mini in double-serge cotton and I’m a fan. Great length for me at 5'3'' and liked the seaming. My only concern would be if the stretch in it would cause this to ride up when walking..

Now, my question to you all is what color would best transition to fall/winter? Brilliant blue or the bright spearmint? I’m usually a black/gray skirt girl.

    1. Thank you! It is the only color left in my size now..so must be a sign. :)

  22. Has anyone tried the stovepipe trousers in bi-stretch wool or the wool flannel? Or even the 1035 pant in stretch wool?
I'm looking for work pants and wonder how the fit compares to Theory trousers. Having slender hips & flat (ahem) posterior, I need as much help flattering my backside as possible.

    1. Connor, I have same body type and I liked the Stovepipe trouser in wool check, not sure if the fit is exactly the same though. You can see my review HERE.

    2. Thank you, AJC. They're quite flattering on you, so I'm tempted to give it a try. Enjoy your blog, BTW.

  23. The refined silk-cashmere wrap in fresh turquoise is a lot darker than it appears online, it's really more of a teal color. I also noticed a couple of snags on it without even taking it out of the package. Back it goes.

  24. I ordered the French Hen Sweater in navy mist over the weekend. Can anyone that has it or has seen it in person tell me whether the hen is off-white or white? Also, how would you describe the fit--similar to the Tippi or looser? Thank you!

  25. I posted some reviews of the No. 2 double serge in wool, the factory merino pleated skirt and the abstract floral skirt here.

  26. Thank you HeatherinSearchOf! I thought it was off-white, but you never know how accurate the website images are.

  27. Tippi sweater in Shocking Pink - I love the Tippis although I did find this year's to run bigger in the body than the one I have from last year. The shocking pink is different than I thought from my monitor but I do really like it. It is darker IRL and reminds me of a sorbet/raspberry color. I also noticed the tag says Dry Clean but last year's says Machine Wash. I am going to contact CS to ask about this.

I'm so sorry to be OT but has anyone washed their Big Shot Dot circle skirt (or dress) in the washing machine on hand wash? I would rather avoid the dry cleaners but am worried about ruining my skirt. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sorry re: above post, the tag from last year's Tippi says hand wash not machine wash.

  29. I ordered the Jules collection dress in silk foulard, just to try on because I could not get over how gorgeous it was online and I needed to be convinced in-person the cut would not flatter me. Well, I'm now convinced. I'm definitely too pear shaped to pull off this tunic style dress. The 00 fit me fine through the shoulders, length about 2 in above the knee (I'm 5'-1").With my wider hips, the dress "settled" in an unflattering way above my bum, instead of draping nicely like it should. Oh well. Other than that, it really is a beautful dress for the right figure. Lovely crimson and cobalt on natural pattern in a crepey-silk fabric. I loved the banding detail at the hem and sleeve. I think it would be great on a petite to medium height person with slim hips.

  30. I got two pairs of the Waverly chinos, size 2T, one in dark oak and one in casablanca blue. I like both colors and the straight-leg cut of the chinos, but I was getting some very strange bunching across the front. I'm fairly slim with a big behind, but whatever was going on in front was a little distressing. So, I had to sew the pockets down to avoid having a faux fupa. They look a lot better with the pockets sewn down, but I wish I had use of the pockets.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have a similar problem with the Waverly and considered cutting the pockets on a diagonal to make them smaller. I may try your solution instead.
It's odd that they fit so well everywhere but look odd in the front. I love the slim leg and would buy more pairs if it weren't for this unfortunate problem.

      Delete
    2. OMG that's a new one..faux fupa-LOL!

      Delete
    3. Is it anything you can help with a belt? I definitely need a belt with the Wavely chinos or else they do that bunching crotch thing. A wider belt is better. I can't say they are the best fitting pants on me, but I like them anyway :) I wonder if the slouchy, faux-fupa thing is part of the look lol!

      Delete
    4. Perhaps that's it - too much pocket! I'd be interested to know how resizing the pockets works out. I never thought of trying a wider belt, but sewing the pockets down completely fixed the problem and the pants are actually flattering now. No more fashion faux (fu)pas!

  31. I'm looking for some advice on the CAFE CAPRI IN ULTRA EYELET...I have the opportunity to purchase them for $120CDN (yes - that's the best deal we Canucks can get on these babies!)

Just wondering if those of you who own them think that they are worth it??? They're final sale and I've never seen them in person, so I'm hoping someone can weigh in....TIA:)

  32. I think they are too expensive now that they have been around awhile. I had the opportunity to buy the geranium lace ones and a pair of collection capris for alot less than $120.
I find the fit of the capris too low for me but I think most people love the fit.
I have the ultra eyelet shell in white and really like it ...its well made but again I got it for alot less. Final sale has more often been a waste of $$ for me than anything....sorry to rain on your parade.

  33. Ok....this is just a VENT! I just get the Madewell catalog today and I see some shoes I want and I go to the website and there is EVERY size available.....but MINE! I call thinking this can't be right, but apparently every girl in the whole wide world wears a size 10. REALLY? So the WWFIFY people are going to try to find me a pair in a store. I find this very hard to believe. I was so p.o'd I almost told her to just forget it. She blamed it on preorder. What? You mean only big footed girls like me preordered this shoes into extinction? I don't buy it.

    1. straycat, this has happened to me in the past and it was just a glitch. On a new rollout one of the Liberty shirts was available in every size except 10. I called CS and they gave me the same story, that size 10 was all sold out. They did find it for me in store as well. Within a few days the shirt that I wanted magically appeared in size 10. If they don't find it in store for you just wait a few days and I bet it pops back.

      Delete
    2. straycat, just call a store and ask them to look up the inventory. They can see what other store has size 10 available across the country. Then call the store yourself. I've done it several times in the past.

    3. If they are new, they will come back soon. It probably just means J. Crew didn't get their full order in yet. Give it a week, probably less.

  34. In case anyone missed my post from the weekend, I did a wardrobe consultation for someone on my blog - someone who had never shopped at J. Crew before! She wanted her work outfits to look more upscale without having to spend a ton of money and I thought J. Crew was a great place to start. Plus I thought she could use more colour in her wardrobe, which is mostly black and beige. She came away with a Tippi sweater in crushed grape and the No. 2 pencil skirt in retro jade (IRL photo on my blog here).

People have been saying that the Tippi runs large this season, but I haven't been finding that to be the case. My blog subject has a 37" bust and wears size 6/8 in dress tops - she consistently took a size M in the sweaters that I gave her to try on. I wear a size 2/4 in JC tops and also tried the Tippi and found that the size Small fits best - the XS, although fine in the torso, was too snug in the arms.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree re solid Tippi sizing and wear 2/4 and have last year's XS and it is a but snug in the arms. I could wear either XS or S.

      Delete
    2. I wear the same size tippi as last year and i dont think the fit has changed at all.

      Delete
    3. I found the solid Tippi to run the same as last year but the polka dot (at least in navy burgundy) to run a full size large. I actually preferred the sleeves of the XXS polka dot to the XS solid retro jade.

  35. Can anyone offer comments on the Snowcap quilted jacket? Does it seem to be decent quality? Is it TTS? Are the olive and red colors properly represented in the online views? I love the idea of this, the down would be warmer than a Burberry quilted jacket and it looks very sporty.

  36. The in-store price notes have been updated in this post. I.e. the Collection brocade pencil skirt still regular price online, $99.99 in-store.

    1. Hi gigiofca, in which store did you see the Collection brocade pencil skirt for $99? I just bought it full price online last night, and I'm trying to get them to adjust my price now, lol.

    2. HeatherInSearchOf - I didn't see the pencil skirt myself. Muffy shared the news. I want to say her store is in the Chicago area, but I'm not sure. A b&m employee can put the style number into the computer and pull up the current in-store price. So, if you call a store, they can easily verify the price that way. HTH

    3. Thank you! It did help, CS agreed to price adjust for me :)

  38. For any of you vertically challenged JCAs (I am 5'1"). I tried the Pixie Pant in Short and it was a good 1" too long for me. I liked the style and fit of the pant in general but unfortunately for a legging look you really can't roll them. HTH.

  40. I just got the Pleated Crepe Skirt in Cabernet and love it! It is TTS, comfortable, and feminine. I love the color - it's slightly darker than it appears on the website. Definitely the wine/oxblood color that is popular this fall. I'm a fan!

  43. Does anyone have wool suiting from 2006? I am debating an Ebay auction for a EUC item but wonder how well it'll hold up for me over time. Looks ok and the seller said there aren't any issues with the fabric. Any thoughts would be appreciated! I'm starting to do more Jcrew shopping on Ebay in hopes of getting better quality items from the past!

    1. Hwin, my first J.Crew suit was purchased on super sale in Summer 2007 and it is from late 2006 or early 2007, cannot quite remember. It was excellent! The fabric was wool twill, it was navy and had adorable pale yellow lining. It got me through the first years of law school where I had just one suit, one pair of heels, and a few dress shirts. I still wear it occasionally and it is still in perfect condition. I say go for it!

    2. Thanks JcrewJD! Went for it. Finishing up my PhD in the spring, so I need more professional pieces for interviews and work.

  44. As promised, I'm back with a review of the stovepipe trousers. In a word, love. The wool is quite lightweight, similar to the super 120s. It is very smooth and has a nice hand, not the slightest bit itchy. They are not lined, I'm fine with that. I really like the higher rise, I'm not as comfortable in the city fit with the low rise. These are the perfect office pant, I will wear them for years I'm sure. The straight leg is flattering. I think the length is perfect for wear with heels. I got mine with a percent off code thank you to a lovely JCA who shared theirs with me :) I would have no qualms about paying full price for these though, that's how much I think I'll wear them.

    1. Thank you for posting this! Can you comment on sizing? I am a 6 in J.Crew favorite fit chinos - would you recommend the same (I'm a bit hippy/pear-shaped) or sizing up/down? TIA!!

  45. Matchstick jean in classic rinse wash (50520) - aaaand now they've changed the jeans. Cut is still the same, denim is thin and kind of "crispy" feeling. My $20 ON Diva jeans feel more substantial. Oh, and the "USA" in the online description actually translates to "Made in Mexico of USA fabric" on the tag. These don't feel like they'll hold up to wash/wear very well, so back they go.

As an aside - they don't have "Matchstick" stamped on the inside like they used to, only the size. The matchstick is now on a sewn-in label. Funny, though - the number and font of the "28 regular" stamp looked very similar to a pair of Loft jeans I have. Hmmmm....

  46. My Allie Dress in aqua floral arrived, and I did a quick little review on my blog for anyone who feels like placing one last order before the sale ends :)

Not to be an enabler, but I think it is totally worth the sale price.
