  2. I have a Nordstrom return so may go to the mall tomorrow and see if there’s anything going on for Memorial Day (better than the current promo). Not that there is much I am really looking at, just a few tops for summer and the currently sold out in my size sport sandals.

  3. No clothes shopping for me right now. I’m still working on decluttering my wardrobe. I dropped off six Poshmark packages at the post office this morning. 👍🏻

    1. Nice! I’ve been selling little by little. What’s left in my closet is really very pared down!

    2. @ Jeanne and Suz Has: Congratulations to you two for keeping at it! I took so much to the Cancer Society's Discovery Shop (spring/summer items), and I've given it a rest to thin out my books. During the next three months, I am going to really pay attention to what I reach for to be sure these are things that I love and want to wear.

Come September (Labor Day weekend), I'll begin the fall/winter process. My plan and hope is to just continue the shopping ban so that I don't complicate things. I'm at almost three months with no purchases, and I'm not struggling. I guess I have to thank J.Crew for providing no temptations.

I didn't accomplish much in the area of shoes. If a pair was truly uncomfortable, then it was easy to part with them. After that, it was a total fail. I didn't even want to get rid of duplicates (same style, same color). At least I haven't more to the mix.

During this shopping pause, it has given me the quiet time and clarity to really consider what makes more sense in the life I now have and expect to have going forward. I have pared down certain activities, so clothing for some associated events is just not necessary. And don't we know that the mythical lifestyle needs to cease to exist. It causes clutter. Example: "This linen tunic with the embroidered starfish will be great for a beach party." Really? Is that in the plan? I've had it for five years, and it hasn't happened yet.

When the time comes that I decide I really do need a particular item, I am determined to buy better and certainly much less. Besides my 20th century black Armani suit that serve me beautifully, other high quality items I have that were purchased "intentionally" are those I would choose to save in a fire. I'll look more to Net-a-Porter rather than looking for a deal. I think this will make me much happier in the long run.

  4. MmeJ, you inspire me! I’m still at the closet archaeology stage - and I’m trying to conceptualize post-pandemic life. I know I’ll want dinner-out clothes, but that collection will be pared down. Dressy “Resort,” on the other hand, will essentially be tossed. And the intensive staying-in has been tough on the furniture, so there’s that to deal with, too. Perserverance!

    1. WFF: I know that my closet excavation has not gone down as deep as it needs to, but I have definitely made progress. I'm pretty certain that "dressy resort" won't be in my future either because I don't want to be at anything like that.

The pandemic really made me think about what I was doing and what I actually want to do, so some things had to go away. I'm actually relieved that I'm no longer participating in certain events. I found that I prefer to stay in at night, and I am more likely to have a lunch out than a dinner.

That probably doesn't sound very appealing to most people, but so many times I felt cheated when going to some "nice" place, and the attire and behavior of others (in addition to frigid a/c) made it not so special for the effort and the money.

I am editing many areas of my life, and it feels good to me.

  5. Mme, it sounds like your wardrobe is in a very good place. Your starfish tunic reminded me of several posts I have read by Angie over at You Look Fab related to functional/activity capsules. One thing I have done in assessing my closet is grouped items by activity ... Basics, Essentials, Workout, Work, Snow/Cold, Rain, Skiing, Hiking, Beach, Special Occasion, Summer. Consider all pieces in the group including outerwear, footwear, accessories. Everyone’s groupings are unique based on their climate and lifestyle. I originally found a huge imbalance in the numbers of items vs. the time I spent in each activity, because we all tend to overbuy for groups we like. This has been a really effective framework for me. YLF has an international audience and it doesn’t all appeal to me but I find many re that have helped me to be more objective about my J Crew obsession.

    1. That is so true, buying more for the groups we like! I have way more summer items than one needs because I love the season and a pretty print, and dress up with dresses and heels much, much more.

    2. I like that way of thinking. I found I was buying more dressy clothes mostly for dinner out or parties but I have way more of that than I need, (and when it came time to get dressed for these occasions I could easily get overwhelmed). I like dressing up but don’t need to add there.

I also think having a “resort” capsule is a good idea. I have a few coverups but remember on our last trip there were a few pieces I wished I had. Not that I’d wear them much (or at all) otherwise, but having a simple dress that could be dressed up or down, that’s easily packable and can be worn with flat sandals or sneakers...it’s very specific but I didn’t have it.

    3. Ruffles, Quite frankly, my wardrobe isn't quite in the place I want it to be...yet. I think that I am personally in a good place for making these decisions, and that is certainly important. Also, not purchasing during this process is quite an accomplishment for me. It needs to continue. I'm not feeling deprived or anything--especially since I have had to confront all of my stuff!

This "season" of my life is challenging due to the care issues of my 94-year-old mother. Although my range of motion is more limited because of this situation, there were other reasons for my choosing to be out less--not that I was any type of social butterfly.

What my mother's situation did impact was my clearing out project. I know that dealing with her home and her stuff will be in my future. I cannot disrupt her life and mess with her things, but I knew that I had to get my own house in order.

I'm okay about my own deaccessioning project. It needed to happen, and with each step I take, it feels good and right.
