Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. Question to Canadian JCAs - a couple of days ago, cagliari67 mentioned the possibility of Canadians using a cross border service. I know that some Canadians who live close to the border have packages delivered to US addresses, when websites won't accept Canadian orders, and then pick them up periodically bur are there any services that Canadian JCAs have used that will accept deliver and then forward on to Canada? I guess the duties/taxes and the paperwork is a headache so maybe there is no such thing? Even after paying service fees, it has to be cheaper. (Although any such purchases would effectively be final sales).

    Any tips/advice?

My shopping at J. Crew is way, way down because of the pricing for Canadians through iParcel (which is a good thing) but I am curious about this option.

    Thanks in advance

    1. Toronto Modern - I’d suggest looking at this company https://www.crossborderpickups.ca/ They have two pickup depots in the Toronto area. I did use them once a couple of years ago and am now looking at going back to them. I also have several friends who use them more regularly than me, I used to use a Niagara Falls (NY) company that provided a shipping address but of course with the closed border I can’t drive down there anymore. Even with the fees, the US deals generally make it worthwhile to use an agency like this. HTH!

    2. Hi ladies, I’ve been thinking of this too recently. I used to use a UPS store across the border that would hold packages. They really rely on Canadian business for this so they’ve started shipping things across to Canadians since the border has been closed for so long. They said shipping is usually about $30 (not marking up the shipping cost) and they’ll combine packages but they don’t know how much duty or tax would be collected. I’m worried about final costs.
@cagliari67, I was looking at the one you mentioned but since I live hours from Toronto I’d have to have them ship it to me and I wasn’t sure what that would cost.
If you end up using one please let us know how it goes. Good luck!

    3. Some digging through the internet led to shippsy.com. They say you can ship to a U.S. address that they will provide. Then they forward to the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and you can pick up. Their FAQ say that if you don't want to pick up, they will forward on for an additional fee. The initial fee seems really reasonable - $6.99 (Cdn) a package. Can't tell what it costs to have them forward on. And of course, you still have to pay the duties and taxes, but they are supposed to take care of all the paperwork. Maybe I will try one day if the the stars align (e.g. cheap Liberty shirt or cheap cashmere on US site)

    4. Shippsy.com appears to charge an additional 3% transaction fee based on the value of item, which is not so terrible given the huge differential between the J Crew prices on the Canadian website and the US website.

    5. Thanks for posting about Shippsy, Toronto Modern. Hadn’t come across them before, and it’s good to know about all the options. Will have to do the math when the US site has a good sale - exchange rate (~30%), duty (18% on clothing), delivery fees - to see if it’s truly a worthwhile exercise. Suspect it would be best for those many situations recently where something is $20 on the US site and $200 on the Canadian side.

    6. Yes, thank you for posting the info! I thought I had read somewhere that if you ship using UPS you won’t get charged duty under totals of $150 but would have to pay HST but I can’t seem to find that. I just wish we’d have a great sale so we wouldn’t have to worry about this. As you mentioned it’s basically going to be final sale this way.
@cagliari67, have you been to Yorkdale? Wondering if they received any shipments in Dec.

    7. Hi Jan - I haven’t been to Yorkdale as they are closed except for pickups, I’d have to phone JCrew and ask for specific items, pay then go pick them up without trying on (and Yorkdale is not easy for me to get to without using the subway). Returns would be even more awkward, so basically everything would end up being final sale. Originally they were offering in-person shopping appointments but I think that was kiboshed quickly. I am hoping they will be allowed to open after New Year’s in which case it will be one heck of a clearance sale! If not, it will all end with a whimper on January 26... As to UPS, the only thing I found is that they don’t charge brokerage fees for items under $20 - remember those fees are *in addition to* actual import duties. The only way you avoid duty upon delivery is if the shipper pays it (as JCrew does) but using a US shipping address negates that. The only “easy” way for me is to wait for All This to end, then shop in Buffalo lol.

    8. sorry in advance to non Canadian JCAs for whom this thread is not relevant...

I agree that the unknown of the duties and taxes is a pain. (Many Canadians know the shock of the delivery person asking for an surprisingly high amount of extra money to release the package.)

But I tell myself this is a small price to get reasonable health care.

      Shippsy's FAQ says:

How are duties calculated? Here's an example.

** items are NOT made in North America in this case

** value is more than $150 CAD, both duties/taxes will be applied

Value of item in USD: $150.00 USD

Converted to CAD (Exchange rate changes every day) : Exchange rate: 1.32

      $150.00 USD x 1.32= $198 CAD

Value of item in CAD x Duty rate = Duty amount >> $198 CAD x 17% duty rate = $33.66

      $198 CAD + $33.66 = $231.66 CAD

      (CAD + Duty amount) x Tax rate = Tax amount >> $231.66 x 13% (personal) = $30.12

      - CBSA Duty amount: $33.66

      - CBSA Tax amount: $30.12

** You can see estimated duty/tax when you provide item information on the system.

      The Canadian government website https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services/cusma-aceum/lvs-efv-eng.html

      says starting July 1, 2020:

Duty and tax exemptions on goods
For a shipment imported by mail, the following still applies:

$20 and under: duty and tax free when imported from any country
Above $20: duties and taxes apply when imported from any country, including the US and Mexico
For a shipment imported by courierFootnote 1:

Imported from any country (other than the US and Mexico)
Up to $20: duty and tax free
Above $20: duties and taxes apply, excluding the US and Mexico
Imported from the US and Mexico
Up to $40: duty and tax free
Above $40 to $150: duty free, but taxes still apply
Above $150: duties and taxes apply

    9. As I look at the details and complications above, I just think once again how I miss the days when I could get good (all in) Canadian pricing via Borderfree and iParcel for J Crew...

    10. Yes, the math is everything! This is why I mostly decide simply to order direct from JCrew on the rare occasions there is a % discount and just ‘suck it up’ lol. For the import agents’ fees to be worthwhile, the US discount on items has to be significant (as they have often been this year but who knows going forward).

And further to my earlier comment above - it now appears the province is going into lockdown everywhere after December 24, for 28 days in Toronto at least, so the JCrew Yorkdale store is unlikely to ever open again, sadly :(

    11. @cagliari67, I was just going to mention that. I feel so badly for the JCrew at Yorkdale. At least if they could open for a while then the SAs could say bye to customers etc and get some decent sales in. I remember going to visit the Ottawa store to say bye to the SAs.
@TorontoModern, thank you for all of that info. It’s a good reminder that we could be in for a big bill. I really miss being able to pop over to the US.

  2. This morning I received Double-breasted lady coat in Italian double-cloth wool
    Item AT696
I ordered it with the delayed shipping but it shipped right away. Reviews online are really mixed.
    My thoughts.
Negatives: Quality is not as high as old jcrew ladycoats. There are some loose threads, button holes seem a little sloppy. It does NOT have the thinsulate lining so don’t expect it to be warm as a winter coat, the material is not thick.
Positives: I ordered a size 6 for a generous fit to wear over my heaviest sweater. Because the waist is nipped in, it works without looking like I’m wearing a coat two sizes too big, and it looks great over all black which is exactly what I wanted. The neckline is high enough that I don’t need to wear a big scarf but still works with the chunky turtleneck. Some of my other coats are either low where I feel too exposed or too high to close with the turtleneck.
Since I didn’t have this color coat and got it on promo I’m leaning towards keeping, but it’s not a “winter” coat.

    1. Also reviews felt the cut looked dated. I disagree. I’d say it’s classic. I like the length, it’s right above the knee on me, and I like the nipped in waist. It’s definitely a fit and flare shape.

    2. I think the lady coat is a great style for winter with the higher front. Take the time before you wear it to go over the buttons, and loose threads on the button holes. Losing a button is a pain. I've worn a down vest under a wool coat to up the warmth.

    3. I’ve worn a vest too but this is more a coat I’d wear a little dressier. If anything I’d do a heavy wool wrap for extra warmth, I don’t think a down vest would flatter the line of the coat.

    4. Sounds lovely! I have a cocoon coat for this season and it’s also thin. No thinsulate! I am on a hunt for the lady coat in grey!

  4. There is a $29 section! I bought 2 pairs of jeans for my daughter! Pajama pants, Few other T-shirts, pointelle cashmere sweater! Was able to use the 50 off 150. So prices were decent! I missed out on the Eddie Parker lemon dress for $15... but it maybe back... and it’s winter so I am fine!

  5. Anyone watching Jenna’s new show? We did a free HBO Max trial so I can watch the show on my vacation. To say I’m obsessed would be a giant understatement. The clothes (so many vintage crew pieces and Jenna’s brilliant mixing), the interiors, the art direction. It’s an incredible show. And now I’m on the hunt for a men’s white button down to copy her interview outfit - she sits on this gorgeous chair and recaps scenes in an oversized button down with a velvet bow in her hair and great jeans. I’m going to try a few men’s button downs to try and recreate. Highly recommend the show!

    1. Hi Liz, I really want to watch that show! I’ll have to see if I can get it here. Last week I got an email from Saks and it showed Jenna’s picks. Made me think of the old days with the JCrew catalogs. It was nice to see her appearing in the saks promo.
