JCAs: What are your favorite coats? I need recommendations. I'm usually a 0 or 2 (tailored versions) in coats and am 5'4" (not petite length), small bust.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you and I are pretty similarly sized. I look for anything that nips in at the waist, since styles like the cocoon coat make my legs look stubby. I have a couple of the stadium cloth boulevard trenches from a few years ago that get a lot of wear, and I like my wool cashmere icon trenches when it's not wickedly cold (I live in Wisconsin). My lady day coat with thinsulate is a bright blue color, and it looks fab with neutrals, so much like Anne mentioned below, I wear it on weekends with casual stuff and still manage to look put together.
DeleteI love the Lady Day coat and have it in a number of beautiful colors. I think the style is classic and flattering. I take one size larger than my blazer size in the Lady Day.
DeleteI needed to add some casual coats to my wardrobe and got the chateau parka in the red windowpane and grey this year - they are adorable. A bit too casual for my work days but probably fine for most. I fit both my blazer size and one size smaller - I ended up going with one size smaller as I don't do a lot of bulky layers and found the a-line a bit too pronounced in my blazer size.
Thanks for input, everyone! I am going to take the plunge today!! I'll let you know what I decide upon. Has anyone tried the pink tweed double-breasted coat? I saw an IG review and the details look amazing. I love the icon trench style, too, and some of the colors in the lady coat are delicious....but getting fewer selections as the day wears on.
DeleteIMO Icon trench or Lady day are much more classic and wearable everyday if that is what you are going for. Probably warmer too. I have both. I haven't tried the pink tweed in question but saw someone wearing it while shopping the other and it did looks cute. If you keep your eye out for pop backs over the next few months you could get a great deal. I got mine in early spring for a great price.
DeleteI'm about the same size but a little taller, 5'6". The lady day is a great coat because it buttons high and has the lining. I take a 4 in it and could even size up to a6 if I needed to wear a blazer more comfortably underneath (this would be a little tight with the 4 for me.). I love it because it can be dressed up or down and I've gotten many compliments. I have the bright red that came out last year. This year's red is a little deeper in this particular coat. I also have a chaorcal gray trench that's heavy that I got in a 6 for the extra layering underneath. I'm not sure if this is similar to the trench that's out now, but it has nice deep pockets and is very warm. The Oxford check is a fun pattern but I wouldn't get it unless you had others to rotate. I tend to like longer costs as opposed to anything hip length, like he pink diamond tweed. I'm less enthused about that silhouette.
DeleteI looked up the style names of two coats I have, from four years ago: stadium cloth boulevard trench and the double cloth metro coat with thinsulate. The metro coat is FABULOUS. I have it in black. Googling I found a pic of it in teal. This is a style they should bring back. Not quite as fitted as the lady day coat, but not as straight as the Regent topcoat with classical details.
DeleteThere is a lady day coat in bright red on the site, size 2. This may work for you. Before it's gone I'd order it!
DeleteI stand corrected - my trench is also the Stadium Cloth Boulevard trench - from 2009. Still in fantastic shape.
DeleteSuz Has, the Metro is my absolute fave! I have it in green and in bright pink. Both are 4-5 years old, look brand new, and always bring compliments. I fear if they brought it back now, though, the fabric would likely be a disappointment (cheaper, scratchier, not as warm).
DeleteI'm also 5'4" and take regular not petite sizes. You can't go wrong w J Crew coats in general, but the Lady Day is my perennial fave. It's so flattering. The Chateau, however, is amazing, warm, and versatile and I wear that one most often this winter.
DeleteBased on frequency of wear, my favorites are my Wintress puffers (I have one from factory and one from retail, no fur on hood, both older) and my Cocoon coats. I love my Stadium Cloth Boulevard Trench too but it's dressier in style so I don't wear it as much.
DeleteI don't really love my Wintress puffers (well, I like the Factory one better than the retail one for some reason), but I have a need for them and wear them a LOT.
I wanted to love the Chateau parka, but the fur trim was too massive on me.
@Cate, I've read a few reviews/comments here & there from others who also love their Factory puffer better than JC puffer, so you're not alone!
DeleteAlso, I have to agree with you about the Chateau parka. I recently bought my first one and I like it in many respects -- it's cute! But the fur trim and the hood itself -- whoa. Neither is functional for me b/c when i put it up, i feel like i might tip over. Also, when worn up as a hood, it encircles my face like a mane and I feel like an extra from the Lion King. So yeah...! (I know trim is removable, but i think the snaps remain visible.) Still, I'm keeping the coat b/c i bought it on sale for a great price and it's really cute (apart from the Circle of Life thing) Also, it's not warm enough for weather below 30s, at least not for me and I can't layer b/c the fit thru the shoulders is snug.
I was just logging on to say that I love my chateau parka! I have been impressed at how warm it keeps me as the weather gets chilly and the hood is a lifesaver with winds. We had incredibly windy weather yesterday in the high 20s/low 30s and the coat kept me warm as I walked around downtown. I wear it to work but love it for running errands on the weekends because I can dress pretty casually but the coat makes me look put together :)
ReplyDeleteI also love my cocoon coat, wool icon trench and the double cloth funnel coat which is a few years old. I'd say these four are in the heaviest rotation during winter.
Any love out there for the factory Gigi pants?
ReplyDeleteI had a pair that were faux leather in front and stretch in back. They were fabulous for cold weather because they looked great with high boots, like leggings only better. I passed them on to my eldest daughter.
DeleteI had the back zip leather side panel Gigi pants and they fit great but I sold them because I never wore them (my leather Pixies and regular Pixie pants got more love). I found the material comparable to the retail Pixie pants and obviously the price is much more favorable! I sized down one size.
DeleteYes! I have a pair of Gigi's from several years ago that still look great. I actually tried the faux leather skinny pant (they seem to be popping in and out of the site) and the tag also says Gigi - the sizing on these was strange, though. Super small in my regular size, and a size up was still barely zippable. I was afraid that sizing up 2 would make them too big in the legs, and there is no slack to them (the first pair I tried was already splitting where the elastic waist met the rest of the pant). Like most JC/Factory items lately, I think they'd need to be tried in multiple sizes. They are cute, though.
DeleteI should have sized down. I got the larger of my two pant sizes and because of the stretch they would end up almost falling down. Probably not noticeable to anyone else but it made me uncomfortable. I still wore them plenty and I think I hand washed, even with the faux leather.
DeleteI have Gigis & retail Pixies & honestly the only difference is the zipper placement. They're great pants! Now if only I could lose 20 lbs so I could fit into them again... :)
DeleteThanks everyone! I was hoping they were a great pant and it sounds like it. I might order a few sizes to try.
DeleteTaylor, you and me both lol! I should probably sell mine but I'm not giving up yet :)
Delete@cate I have sold almost everything I owned in my former size(s) but I am stubbornly holding on to these three pairs of pants for dear life!
DeleteThe pixies are on sale on retail and there's not much of a difference between prices of them and factory Gigis. I just ordered the snap front ones to try. I like the structure of the zip and snap as opposed to the pull on. They may be a return for me but I wanted to order the Regent blazer in case the one I ordered over a week ago never shows up.
