J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Huge restock in sale section (2364 items) and free shipping this morning.

    1. That's why I didn't shop. Jcrew loses and my wallet is happier

    2. Same. There was definitely some things that caught my eye, and the prices were decent, but I refuse to shop final sale. Ever. Especially with J. Crew, when there's so many things with weird fits or cuts.

    1. I haven't. I don't expect it to arrive till February. :-( #sloow

    2. i was hoping they'd at least pop up in email form in time for this rollout, but nope. :/

    3. It might be awhile still. I just checked my emails searching spring rewards and last year it was February 16 when I got the email announcing the rewards.

  3. The two t shirts I wanted disappeared from the website today.

    1. Hi Ellek72 - When new arrivals are rolled out online, some items disappear from the site for a day or two. It's a weird glitch that has been there for a long time - the shirts will be probably back in a few days.

  4. Why is it when the big update to the sale happens the % off goes down? Don't get me wrong 50% off is great but 60% was better. I broke the ban to order the tartan maxi, windowpane chateau in petite that I have been stalking and a corduroy blazer. I have been good at not buying all the things I want and have thoughtfully reviewed my cart before purchasing. I can pass on another random sweater or striped tee but the items I got today were more unique aside from the blazer which was only $35. Hope to keep making only thoughtful purchases this year and fewer than last. And hoping my items ship!!!

    1. I was only waiting on the Fringe/tweed top, so the free shipping was very welcome, despite the slightly lower discount. Thanks to all the JCAs that pointed out this great bargain last week! I took a second based on those comments and realized it was a real steal.

    2. It is a cute top. I paid more for it right after the holidays but still got it for a good price. Wore it on New Year's Eve. Definitely a steal for the price now. I considered getting another color but was able to resist.

  5. I tried on several items including a few new arrivals yesterday...for reference I am 5'8", 155 lbs, 34-29-39. 32DD.

:: COLLECTION MIDI DRESS IN RATTI® MORNING FLORAL PRINT (g0072) - I tried this on in an 8. The material is lovely, the print is beautiful and the length is great. My main problem as usual lately is that there isn't nearly enough room in the bust. The smocking on the waist -- which I think is a fantastic detail -- was about halfway up my bust. I think I'd need a 12 in this dress to fit over my chest. The sleeves are great though, and the overall look is very flattering. It would look so pretty with a coral cardigan or jacket over it!!

:: ITALIAN CASHMERE MIXED-STRIPE CREWNECK SWEATER (g0573) -- I LOVE how soft this sweater is, and the stripes look great on. On my hourglass figure the thinner back stripes curve around towards the front just over my waist, which defines it nicely. I was SO confused when trying on this sweater...the SA told me it's supposed to be oversized, but the large looked entirely sloppy on me. I ended up buying in my usual medium which is slightly loose but probably not as slouchy as J.Crew intends it. I'm shooting some new OOTDs later this week and this will almost certainly be in one of them! Here is how the J.Crew Collection Store on Madison Ave styled it.

:: QUILTED SAFARI JACKET (g0644) -- I'm pretty meh on this one. I love the way it looks on mannequins, but in order to get a size large enough to fit across my chest, it looks boxy and loose and sloppy everywhere else. What happened to box jackets with fit darts in the back??? A little stretch panel to accommodate many different sized chests??? I MISS those little fit details J.Crew. I tried on a 10, but would probably need a 14. By the way, I'm an 8 in most J.Crew jackets. :(

I am very curious to see if Rynetta buys this one and if so how it looks on her!! She seems to inspire me to take a second look at items that don't appear to work at first.

:: FLORAL NECKLACE (f3185) and JEWEL BOX NECKLACE (f9180). I saw these displayed together and ended up buying them both. Both are lightweight, good-looking costume jewelry! They will look great with ivory, blue, really any color except pink. The Floral Necklace is an update of last year's version with two tones; now it is a single tone which I like much better. The store had 8 in stock and none of them were missing any stones as far as I could see.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Slightly OT but has anyone else noticed that the Madewell category page images are so fuzzy? Like they are out of focus?? It's very annoying and hard to look at for more than about 30 seconds, and such a simple CSS fix.

  7. new arrival fatigue jacket...showing the blue and drab olive ? not the burnished moss in the guide? I wanted the burnished moss...oh well more $$ Saved again.

  8. Always fun to look at new arrivals & I wishlisted several at JC (especially interested in the blue fatigue jacket) and Madewell. Also ordered one scarf from the sale section but I'm not confident it will ship -- right before I checked out it showed 7 left in stock, immediately after it showed that all were sold out. So I may or may not have broken my shopping fast.

    1. @Cobalt, may I ask how you can tell the number of items left in stock? I've been trying to track down a scarf that keeps alluding me, even when I put it in my cart ready to go. Just curious! I've never noticed a stock number so I'd love to notice this next I'm shopping.

I have to admit that I recently caved and bought a pair of boots that I'd been eyeing over at Madewell (& they went on sale! What was I to do!) Consoling myself with the knowledge that unlike most clothing items, I actually NEED boots. Oy. Still feel a bit ashamed at myself, for some reason. I'm waiting on rewards so I can try one of the new arrivals (Ratti skirt in floral).

Anywho, I hope your scarf ships!!

      Delete
    2. No shame in buying something that's needed, @TM93 -- especially boots (on sale, no less) when there's still plenty of winter left. To see the # of items remaining in stock, click on the "quantity" tab (either on the item page or in your cart). I'm not sure how accurate it is, and it only goes up to 9 (even if more are available). But at least on slow volume days, it seems to give a good indication of whether there's just one or two left or plenty still in stock. HTH!

    3. Oh, that's such a great idea, thanks so much for that tip, Cobalt!! The other day I was browsing for this scarf, but decided to continue looking at the rest of Sale items. Had I done your trick, I would have known to act with haste! (Blushing -- I don't *need* this cashmere ribbed scarf, but I have the matching hat and it would look so cute! Sigh.) In any case, thanks again!!

      Delete
    4. Well if the scarf matches the hat you already have, then I think you do need it. :) Hope it pops back again for you!

    5. @cobalt, I randomly checked for my item and seem to have finally snagged one! Didn't have time to check Your Quantity trick (time was fleeting!) but I'm hoping it ships - it completed vanished after I ordered. Not getting my hopes, but we shall see! Maybe you were my good luck charm! :-)

  9. Couple of recent Madewell purchases I made--

Breakfast All Day t F8402: super cute, love the drapey vibe, feels nice and soft. I wore it under my washed leather moto jacket, skinny jeans, and my custom New Balance 574s on Sunday and felt great. I went with an XS instead of an XXS for a looser fit.

Flannel zip front popover in washburn plaid F6722: This is thinner than many of my other Madewell flannels, but still comfy. I like the look of the zipper, and the green plaid is nice. I didn't have major issues lifting my arms like other reviewers, but this shirt definitely isn't for folks with a lot happening in the bust region. I'm 34A, so it works for me, but in the larger of my 2 sizes (XS). Paired with dark skinny jeans and black Nike blazers yesterday.

Flannel classic ex boyfriend shirt in buffalo plaid (blue and white) F9718: fits like my other Madewell flannels. I order a size down pretty much all the time with these, so I picked XXS. My flannels from last winter are softer than this one, but it's still comfy. I've worn it with gray skinny jeans and dark blue skinny jeans so far with my custom New Balance in the same blue/white color scheme.

Flannel shrunken ex-boyfriend shirt F5935: This is my new favorite flannel because it's so soft and pretty! This shirt seriously feels like cashmere, and the shrunken fit means it looks more like a typical dress shirt. I sized down to an XS because I wanted to wear it to work when I need to dress a little nicer (but it's just a great paired with jeans). I wore it last week with forest green skinny cords and my gray suede Nico boots.

Side note, today I figured out how to wear my Madewell black cross-back overalls and manage to look professional. I have my black open front cashmere cardigan A7982 over the overalls, which covers the straps. I put on a skinny sparkly belt to define my waist, and I rolled up the legs a little to show off my strappy black and navy satin collection flats I picked up from the clearance store last summer. Hooray! I'll post a pic on my instagram later today (@monzabuss).

    3. @JSR and Dmitri, I just went to Madewell on my lunch break bc I was hoping to try the Janice boot on for fit, no dice, but a fellow shopper was trying on those Arielles in the pink color and I noted how pretty they looked. Lace ups don't work on my little legs (too much calf), but these seemed really low-key and delicate.

      Delete
    4. I tried the Langford last summer and they looked great on me (I am 5'4"). Unless they changed the fit, they are very flattering (much more that the JCREW Rayner). HTH!

  15. Forgot, I also received two tees on clearance: the tuxedo inspired tee in black and the grosgrain ribbon trimmed tee in the red/gray combo.
I ordered XS in both. The tee shirt weight seems similar in both, but the tuxedo tee has a more refined finish to the material. Fits are much different. Tuxedo tee is narrower and longer. Arms are fairly long and tight. Striped tee is boxy.
For the sale price I'm fine with both. I think the striped tee will work with a shirt underneath, but I also found a funny combo, the micrgingham Rhodes blazer from last year, the colors are a very dark navy and burgundy on white, and the only way I've worn it is with a gray tee shirt. Somehow the scale of the stripes seems to work, and the ribbon trim colors (which clash with the stripes in a tolerable way) match the blazer. It will look cute with slouchy distressed jeans and maybe gold sandals.

  17. Wishlisted a few things. I wish the Mermaid floral came in a cotton pencil skirt, that would be perfect for summer. (I'm generally a fan of ruffles, but I don't love the placement of that extra ruffle on the Tippi version -- wonder whether it can be cut off? Maybe not!)

I really like Collection pleated silk skirt in Ratti® geo print (item G1257) but that length isn't flattering on me (too short). Curious about the new perfect t (love that it comes in Stripes!) Like some of the new jackets - that fatigue one, sigh. (No need for one though.)

@jan, you probably noticed it by now, but this is the top I was talking about last week: Ruffle bib T-shirt (item G2328) I love that it comes in Black!

    1. i love to hear if you like the new perfect t shirt. i know the sleeves are longer....but what i loved about it was the longer length, i have no need for anything new right now but i love to see what others are liking,

      Delete
    2. @TM93, thank you for mentioning! When I looked at new arrivals on Monday I swear I didn't see that top or the ratti silk skirt you mentioned. I just looked now and really like both of those. The only thing I worry with the bib tshirt is that it says loose fit. I hope it's not boxy.

  18. I know they're from last year, but it looks like they're restocking the striped sailor pants. Anyone have any input on these? Any hope of them looking flattering if I'm not a 5'11" size 0?

    1. I love them! Ordered size 8 & fit was tts. Wore them multiple times as they're quite versatile.

  19. i must be the only one not loving the ratti print. its the green and the splash of red and I hate to say it but I am really tired of all the stripes...Its just getting on too long with every roll out stripes stripes and then more stripes.

    1. Same. It looks like a big mouth to me.

      Delete
    2. I don't like it at all. The colors are not pleasing together and the giant flower is loud and weirdly placed.

There was nothing I even wishlisted from this rollout. I have a lot from years past, and the one or two things I did pick up this winter look ratty (buttons falling off), so I'm taking a break!

      Delete
    3. Agree, not a fan. It looks very inexpensive to me. Doesn't pass the Kohls Test.

      Delete
    4. Add me to the list - I don't care for this print at all & I agree it looks inexpensive. I hate that green!

      Delete
    5. Same. I don't like any of the new prints.

      Delete
    6. I wouldn't even have guessed this was a Ratti print if it hadn't been labeled as one. I've loved a lot of the Ratti prints, even if they're on pieces I wouldn't wear or can't afford, but this one just doesn't speak to me on any level.

      Delete
    7. same. Stopped at my store last night and they were putting everything out. I tried the skirt for the sake of trying it. Fit was awkward and I felt ridiculous in it. I didn't try either of the tops. Just not my style. Not a big fan of the ornate floral either but I can see more people gravitating towards this - it's just personally not in my color wheel.

There are a few pics on my Instagram "story" from my try ons last night - will get pics up on my blog in the next few days.

I did try the cotton Maddie pants and those were a love for me. The wool ones never quite worked for me but these are fantastic. Full length, mid rise, very flattering, and they'll look good with heels or flats. TTS I don't need cotton pants yet but these are on my wish list. I can see why they have good reviews.

    9. Unlike other Ratti prints like 'Into the Wild', Happy Cat, the Under the sea one (forget whether that was its exact name), none of which I cared for, I did like this one right away. I liked the combo of green and navy (have a similar combo in an old dress from Banana that I love), but I have to wholeheartedly agree with everyone about the oddly-placed red splash -- I hadn't noticed that before and now it can't be unseen!! (Can't believe I didn't notice sooner, but it is rather prominent.) Ugh. These are exactly the kind of issues that go viral when it comes to clothing/prints -- i think Target or JC Penney had a similar issue last year, with an oddly placed pattern on a skirt as well. Sigh. So disappointing. I'm still willing to give the skirt a shot (not ordering til I get my rewards), b/c I'm really curious, but I'm prepared for the truth! What a ridiculous oversight on their Design team's part.

    10. TM93, Rynetta is wearing the skirt on her IG (jcrewismyfavstore) you should go check it out there. If you really like it, you should at least try it to see if it works for you.

    11. Agree with @Lauren. The pattern placement looks like it will vary from skirt to skirt. Definitely worth a try to find one you like, if you like this print.

    12. Thanks, Lauren and maryeb! I did see both Rynetta and Ina's posts for this skirt on IG yesterday, agree that the pattern must vary from skirt to skirt. I'll roll the dice & see what I end up with!

    16. I noticed that too Beverly but I guess you'll just have to try it and see where it lands on your body. The red splotch doesn't bother me as much as that green color (sorry, it's my least favorite color).

  21. Oops- I was going to add to my comment but accidentally deleted it. But yes, I was mentioning that the splash of red from the skirt hits me at a "really awkward" place (iykwim)!!! And the background swirl seems random and I'm probably just biased toward the punk floral print!
