J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Has anyone tried the Collection Crepe Shawl Blazer? I absolutely love what a brilliant jacket can do for an ordinary outfit and have my rewards card still burning a hole in my pocket. This jacket seems to be right up my alley but I'm concerned about the quality and fit.

    1. Curious about this one too! Wish the price was more reasonable and they had done it in slightly more muted colors, maybe festival blue or a henna/merlot color. I just don't know how much wear I would get out of it.

I think Blair of Atlantic-Pacific has some pics up of it in pink.

  3. OT, but I had a celebrity sighting yesterday. Kim Sears, in what appears to be a J Crew Schoolboy Navy Blazer. ( On my blog postOn Trend Orchids )It was so chic from a distance that I am going to go try it on tomorrow! Has anyone bought it yet? The lining is so attractive.

    1. I don't think it is J Crew, I saw it on her in the paper this morning and the buttons are very different. I do love her simple style.

    2. I couldn't tell. Either way, she looked lovely in it!

  8. Can anyone comment on the minnie pants in bi-stretch wool? Does it stretch & bag out in the rear the longer you wear it? The size 0 fits a tad snug (not like sausage casings, more like skinny jeans snug) on me, and the 2 (my normal size in chino shorts) fits fine but a tiny bit roomy. I'm wondering if it stretches out during the day and whether to size down?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They stretch, definitely. The wool holds up much better than the twill though. Love my Minnies

      Delete
    2. so stick with normal size in the bi-stretch wool? Thanks Lira!

      Delete
    3. I'd stick with my size. They didn't stretch for me, so no baggy rear end. I have 3 colours from last year.

      Delete
    4. I think normal size bags too much but my dilemma is they bag in the rear but not in the calf so i do stick with my regular size....i often wear boots with them to cover the tight calf area.

  9. OT, but Net-a-Porter had a lot of new J Crew items on its website today -- I'm assuming it's a "sneak peek" of what Thursday's rollout will be.

    1. Thanks for the heads up!
I remember liking the "wool blend boucle coat" in the fall preview. (the pink coat with the big shawl collar)

But seeing blend in the title, I checked the description and it's 50/50 wool / poly! Almost 900 USD for a half poly coat, seriously??? Just because it is a collection item.

The wool-cashmere Icon trench doesn't have poly listed in the description and is $325. That is looking like a steal!

  12. Check out J.Crew's Spring 2013 collection, it's beautiful! You guys have to check out the pictures online....I saw a few pics from my Instagram. Amazing mix of prints and colors...it looks like a solid collection!

  13. J Crew just posted a picture of some of the Spring line on their facebook page...

Overall I like the color palette, but some of the pieces are too stuffy for me, others too crazy. Concerned about the continued presence of critters . . .

    4. I like ALL of the shoes, the green floral silk skirt, and the creamsicle orange Edie Grand...that's it. Hope these shoes go into production!

  14. Could someone comment on the Viv Flats? Are they worth FP? Comfortable? I have been on the fence for a pair of Black Patent ones. Thanks very much!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not worth FP in my opinion. I have tried these and for a more comfy fit, half a size up worked better since I have a wider foot.

      Photos on my blog.

    2. I love my Vivs! But definitely size up a half size. Also, check out the Sidewalk Skimmer from Madewell -- cheaper and I could wear my regular size.

  15. Have a review of the Liberty print shirt in assorted florals (vintage brights--the star print) here at my blog. here at my blog.

Of course since it is Liberty, I am in love. That doesn't mean I have to like that I have to save a lot of pennies to buy it, though. (The price, ugh.)

    1. I have that shirt, too, and I love it. The colors are very pretty and it goes with practically everything.

I agree that J.Crew Liberty print shirts are ridiculously expensive, but you underestimate the price of making it yourself. That fabric is expensive! I calculated it a while ago and I figured it would cost me $82+ just for the fabric, as it takes 2 to 2 1/2 yards for a basic woman's shirt. With all the findings included (pattern, buttons, thread, interfacing) the price would be over $100...plus my labor. It's a PIA to sew a shirt. Generally, it's just not worth my time and effort. I might do it to create something special that isn't available in stores, but I know it would cost more than buying ready to wear.

    2. Can I afford this shirt. Yes. Am I willing to pay the price? No way!!! I own one jcrew liberty shirt that I got on super sale very cheap a few yrs ago. Very happy w/it.

      Delete
    3. Yeah good point @Jeanne re: price and work to make a button down yourself. I would likely stick with easier patterns like skirts, etc. :)

@original genny ... wish this one would have gone to sale. Glad you got your one for a cheap price.

  17. I need help on sizing for the stretch twill minnies. I have to size down for the regular cafe capris cause they stretch out by the end of the day and I'm wondering if these are the same. Can anyone comment on how much these stretch out or do they hold up well? Thanks in advance!

    1. Definitely size down one in the twill Minnies.

  20. OK...so I'm NOT a shoe person. I want to be a shoe person but I always want something that is comfortable and after awhile I complain about ALL my shoes. Are any of J.Crew shoes pretty AND comfortable? BTW: I don't wear flats...only heals or wedges...If not J.Crew, who would you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't have any J.Crew wedges or heels that could be classified as comfortable. I'd call them "not unbearable"...

Cole Haan makes really comfortable shoes that are actually cute. Kate Spade also, but they can get very expensive. But mopst of my cute, comfortable heels/wedges have been purchased at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for $15-40 and are brands like Jessica Simpson, Jones New York, or Adrienne Vittadini.

      Delete
    2. J.CrewJD - Thank you! I'll check if there is a TJ Maxx around me. I bought a pair of Cole Haan shoes recently but they are closed toe and very small wedge. I liked them because they were comfortable AND I need at least a few pairs of closed toe shoes. Thank you!

      Delete
    3. Okay, this is only my experience so take it with a grain of salt, but: I don't find Cole Haan shoes to be comfortable. I've bought several pairs thinking that they would be, but they just never are. My most comfortable shoes are Chie Miharas, but I actually find some J. Crew styles to be quite comfortable. I find the Martina Wedges to be very comfy (size up 1/2 a size, though), and also the leather Valentinas (TTS - I haven't tried the patent but I've heard others say that they are uncomfortable). I find the Monas to be quite uncomfortable after a full day. HTH!

  34. A few reviews of mostly sale items:

    (1) Galathee tee (96508)-- wanted to love it, but hated it. I have an old white w/navy stripes boatneck JC tee from seasons past that is dying and I thought this would replace it but it fits awful. It is thin fabric, with a short cut so that when I life my arms, half my stomach shows. Returned.

    (2) Boy shirt in snowcat (10683): bought this with additional 30% off in store and I LOVE it. Good for work or weekends, I love the print and I love the fit, which is a bit loose but not sloppy and still tailored in the shoulders. I sized up from my usual 6 to an 8 just to make it more blousy and menswear-like and I just love it, esp. for $35ish. Thin fabric though so might need layering as the cold seasons come in here.

    (3) Tall memo dress in Super 120s (48446)--As these go on sale, I keep buying them. I own the navy and the warm sienna and they are gorgeous. The fabric, esp. the navy, is so beautiful. I'm about 5'8.5" tall and the tall size is perfect for me, hitting just around the right part of the knee. So flattering on my athletic/pear body, with a nice nipped in waist and a bottom portion that flows nicely over me without being too tight or too loose. The neckline is pretty but not too low cut and the sleeves make it really look polished. For me, this is a perfect office dress.

    (4) Long No 2. Pencil Skirt in Double Serge Cotton (78837)--love it, but had to think about it a bit first. Obv. this skirt is for tall girls only, sorry to all the shorter ladies. I got the golden burgundy since that color is so hot for fall and it has an interesting slight sheen to it, very polished looking in a good way. When I wear it, the look brings to mind Victoria Beckham with her long, past the knee hemlines that she's always wearing. It feels very high fashion. I need to have my tailor take in the waist an inch or two (my rear end is quite a bubble) but other than that, I think this will be a sleek office item this fall and perhaps make an appearance at some holiday events later this year. The cotton is thick so I don't mind that it's not wool.

    1. I'm 5'2" and love the long no. 2. It worked well for me in black, but I will always wear heels with it.

  35. I received the pepper tweed jacket today. I took a 0, the larger of my two JC top sizes. It is definitely cropped, with bracelet sleeves. The tweed is black and white, with a nice weave (tighter than some of the other tweed items of late). Buttons are round, burnished brass and the front has hook and eye closures. It is finished in grosgrain ribbon.

Although I was happy with the quality and construction, it is more cropped and boxy than I was hoping for. If it was just a little longer I think it could work. (FWIW, I am 5'3" with a longish torso). Sadly, this will be going back.

  36. Reviewed a number of items from the new rollout, including the Contrast Knit Blazer, a new color in the Collection Sequin Colorblock Tank, the Inside-Out Fair Isle Sweater, the Silk Boyshirt in French Hen, and the Merino Zigzag Sweater in this post.

  37. Any reviews on the sequin bow pants?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I received several items today that I order with my cardholder promotion discount.

Tipped peacoat in black/white - fit it somewhat boxy but is very well made

Collection bow blouse in electric plaid - beautiful print - fit is loose looked great tucked into a pencil skirt

Collection skirt in electric plaid - again beautiful print - waist is elastic which I was not expecting runs TTS to big

Tippi sweater in dot - love but fit is a bit larger than other tippi's I own

Stovepipe trouser in check - runs smaller than I expected but love; fit is narrow in the hips and thighs

For reference I am 5'3" and 100 lbs. In short, I would like to keep everything just not sure even with the 30% discount if I can afford:(
