JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. This is less about styling and more about "help me make this work"...just got the Lulu snakeskin ballet flats and while I love them, they're just a bit too big. I should have ordered down half a size but of course they're final sale. Anyone have any tricks for getting away with slightly-too-big flats?

    1. I use walgreens brand white foam insoles. Work great. This may sound funny and I've never tried it but on the today show kathie lee and hoda both used a feminine pad to take up some room in their too big shoes! I thought this is genius in a pinch

    2. Yep, the heel inserts are perfect for shoes that are 1/2 size too big. Cvs has them too.

    3. (original) Genny, that is hilarious! Can you imagine going somewhere you had to take your shoes off and the world seeing pads in your shoes? lol! I can see why it would work, though.

    4. The heel inserts are perfect for shoes a touch too large. Note that they're not the inserts that sit along the bottom of the shoe, they're the ones that stick along the inside heel to make your shoes about a half size smaller.

    5. I'll go to Walgreens today. Thank you all so much!

  2. Target sells cute heel inserts in their shoe section of the store. They're cushioned and come in different colors and even a leopard print. I used these in the Lulu ballet flats. They also have full sole inserts that are meant to help prevent slipping. It's worth a try!

    1. I love the Biennial satchel, I think the leather is so buttery soft and the color is such a statement. I think the Margate satchel is a bit more tame. That being said, if you have a lot of statement purses and need that one piece that goes with everything it might be the wiser investment.

    2. I had the Biennial Satchel back in December and I returned it. It started to sag with only a few things inside. I got instead both of the Margate Satchels and have been pleased with them. They are roomy and a bit sturdier, I find.

  4. OT: I went to see the new arrivals last night and have posted reviews and pix of the Zigzag Sequin tee, Tie-neck top in dot, and No.2 pencil in snake print here. I tried on quite a bit last night, and will be posting more reviews over the next several days, too. :)

    1. You are the best, FFM! Curious about the material on the snake print skirt. Was there any sheen to the silk/wool blend? Was the fabric noticeably "dressier" than the no. 2 wool pencil skirts? Its so hard to tell online : ).

    2. Thanks thisnewhouse! :) As for the skirt, if memory serves correctly, I think there may have been just a subtle sheen to the silk/wool blend, but it was minimal if at all. The color and print did not stand out as much in person as it does online though, IMO. It did seem dressier to me than the wool pencil skirts, but not in an 'only wear it to a special event' type of dressier. The fabric is actually fairly lightweight and will work for multiple seasons depending on wear you live. Hope this helps!

  5. I got a pair of bright red toothpick ankle pants last month, and I haven't worn them. They're real tight, so I would feel best with something long-ish that covers my bum at least partially. Any suggestions? I love Nordstrom, J Crew, and of course Target clothing!!!

    1. How about the striped tunic as in the photos here?

    2. Or a chambray shirt? I think that would look so nice!

    3. 2nd the chambray shirt, also a long cardigan over a cute shell or tee would give you some coverage.

  6. If possible, can anyone tell me when the white bubble necklace is marked down in their store? It isn't available in my local stores and online. TIA!

  7. AD MD.....The white bubble is not on sale yet in my store. There were no additional mark downs today, so I don't know if it will go on sale or not. I'm hoping it will!

  8. Hi ladies! I bought the royal violet pencil skirt and would love to hear ideas on what colors to pair with this skirt. Thank you!

    1. I have paired this skirt with yellow, an apricot/peach colour, light blue, chambray, navy and white/ivory. I really liked the yellow with it, the colours complemented each other nicely. HTH!

    2. I have a white cardigan with purple flowers w/ green leaves that I bought at Talbots last summer. It matches the violet color perfectly. Love when that happens!

    3. I have the royal violet skirt as well. I pair it with my black & white gingham Perfect shirt. I also pair with a chambray button down and a yellow & white striped t-shirt.

    4. I'm on the same wavelength as Louise - I have the royal violet pencil and love wearing it with the b/w polka dot natasha. (I also have the b/w gingham perfect shirt and hadn't thought of that. Thanks!)

Another thought -- I love the tonal thing, so a lighter shade of purple (lavender) would also be pretty.

  9. I purchased the new turquoise plaid shirt and I love the fit and like the print but not sure if I love it enough to pay full price... Should I keep it or do you think it will still be around for sale?

  10. AD MD....I VERY surprised it sold out online. I really didn't think at $150.00 the white would sell out before going to sale. My 2 stores have it and I'm going to keep bugging them about it. If I find it has gone on sale, I'll post it.

OR should I just dry clean per instructions. Please advise with your linen tippi cleaning experiences. Thanks!!!!!!!!!! -Amanda

  13. I have two questions...

One - I have a Superfine cotton pencil skirt from a couple of years ago that calls for dry clean only. Has anyone hand-washed a superfine cotton piece?

Two - does anyone know which sweater is in this photo? Not finding it on the website. http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/skirts/pencil/PRDOVR~90795/90795.jsp

    Thanks!

    1. KMSB: That is a cashmere sweater that hasn't been released to the regular stores or online yet. AJC tried it on at the concept store and shared a photo of it in this post on her blog. She took a pic of the tag, and it says the item # is 96677, and it will retail for $228.
