J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  3. The Jules Dress in Fanfare, size 00:

Italian Leather Stud Belt, size s (quick blurb):
    http://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441820941&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302024036&srcCode=AFFI00001&siteId=J84DHJLQkR4-APZqy1FLPQ*4GYfroh17eg

Both are items I picked up on sale. Currently, neither are available online, but could be at your local store. As we know, items pop back up online occasionally. :)

    1. AdAstra, I ordered and returned the bureau skirt. Fit was good, true to size, and I like the longer length. Pockets are always great in a skirt. The deal killer for me was the fabric. It feels like burlap, rough and coarse.

    2. AdAstra, I just had to comment that I love your handle! No place like home, huh? ;)

  6. Factory Classic Trench (21674) - I was disappointed... the collar slightly pleated and nowhere like the Icon Trench, as I was expecting. In general, the factory items were good quality but tops ran a size big.

Rooftop red Valentina pumps (49073)- found them in a store during the 30% off sale. They are TTS and gorgeous, but very slippery (need to get soles).

Big-shot dot circle skirt (72981) - also found in store on sale. It is a beautiful tulip shape and runs TTS (even for the wide hipped...).

Teddie dress (47465) - the skirt has a similar shape to the skirt above. I am bottom heavy and often have to size up. I did not have to in this dress. It was also a very conservative length near the knees for me at 5'3". I love the cut and am debating whether to keep. I really wish the zipper wasn't exposed.

Schoolboy blazer in Morse code jacquard (67634) - This runs big, similar to the other schoolboy styles. Great material.

  9. i received the nolita denim jacket in the great lakes wash in a size xs and it is already on its way back.
it was`soft and beautiful, just too oversized for me.i probably could have made it work, but i wanted a fitted look to wear over dresses.
when i get the xxs i will review it.
sizewise i am a xs in sweaters and a xxs in tees.

  10. Was able to visit a J. Crew in Florida and tried on a few things:

Pippa heart sweater: love this. Nice fit and feels so soft.

Thomas Mason perfect shirt in check: I've never tried them before. But I loved the blue. Fabric is nice and soft.

Scoopneck blouse in anchors aweigh: Nice fabric and pattern. Felt a bit tight in the shoulders. Would probably size up.

#2 pencil skirt in Seersucker: Fits TTS like all pencil skirts. Liked the pockets.

#2 pencil skirt in Raj Paisley: beautiful colours, almost a bit too bright for me. Fits like all the #2 pencil skirts.

  12. I recently tried the Seville Wedge Espadrilles in-store, and absolutely loved them. I tried on the leopard-print canvas, which are adorable and give the flattering illusion of very long legs! They are very stable and comfortable. I think they're just sensational, classic summertime shoes.

My normal shoe size is 7.5. In JC heels/pumps, I take an 8. The item description says for half sizes to size down, so I tried both the 7 and the 8. The 7s fit perfectly.

I wanted the black, which are waitlisted online till July. So I called the WWFIFY service and they've found me a pair that are on their way now. Can't wait -- I think I'll be wearing these all summer long.

  15. Oh, one more. Morse code jacquard cafe capris. LOVE, but they run big. Wish I had gotten a 4! I got at least 10 compliments when I wore them... and I found them to be very flattering. I wore them with a green Tippi.

  16. I am probably in the minority, but I find the Valentina pumps painful - both the printed patent and the leather. My feet are on the wide side of average. The toe box is fine, it is the arch area that is the problem.

The spring schoolboy jackets (morse code and herringbone) and double serge cotton pencil skirts seem roomier this year. I took the smaller of my J Crew sizes in the jacket (0) and sized down to the 00 in the skirt.

    1. I agree about the Valentinas. My feet are wide too. I will keep them and suffer for fashion, though lol. I love how they look and the heel height is just right for me.

  17. I finally received my patent Monas in Spicy Cinnamon and it took 2 painful days to break them in but it was worth it. I love the colour. I just wish that for the price JC and other companies charge for their shoes that they would add rubber soles or heels. There is a lot of marble in my office building and I have to take every pair of shoes I buy to have rubber soles added or I wouldn't be able to go anywhere. I found that I take a 9 in the leather monas but an 8.5 in the patent monas. I wouldn't say they are comfortable for long periods but they sure look good so I keep them at the office.

  20. Muffy, I love my patent Valentinas, but no, not comfortable at all. My feet really hurt after wearing them for an evening. Maybe I need to break them in, but they're patent so I doubt there's much give in them.

I tried on and bought the Heart Tippi. It is so cute and comfy. I'd say it's TTS or maybe a bit larger. I could've taken a M or L, but opted to get the L b/c I put cotton things in my washer. I also tried on the dotted full skirt and it was hideous on me. I don't know why I keep trying these full skirts b/c I look just awful in them. They're just so cute that I wish they'd flatter me. I'm a "ruler" shape, so I have no waist and my hips aren't big. Not the right body type for this skirt. Although I tried the Big Shot dot dress or whatever it's called and that one sat higher on my waist than the skirt and it was really cute and somewhat flattering. It's just such a BOLD pattern in a dress that I didn't think I'd feel comfortable in it and I'm probably a bit too old for an all over polka dot dress. Very pretty though. Tried the Feather Talitha blouse on and the sleeves were a mile long on me and loose on top, but in a sz. smaller would've been too tight through the tummy area, so that was a pass. Really loved the foulard cafe capris, but didn't get them b/c I still think they were a little overpriced. I did snag the black and white pyramid bracelet for like $14 and it's really cute and seems pretty well made.

  21. I got the Olympia suede wedges in apricot mist on sale last week and I love them. Not sure why they call the color apricot, because it's much more of a tan color. I don't know why it took me so long to get on the neutral shoe bandwagon, but true to the hype, they make my legs look really long. The suede is very soft and the shoes are quite comfortable. I'd love to get more colors when they go on sale. Fits tts.

  22. I just tried on a bunch of stuff
    (see here: http://findingcate.polyvore.com/)

I don't have time to review it all now, but the only thing I loved was the boy shirt in indian voile.

The Altuzarra Sabrina dress was a miss for me. At 5'6", I was hoping it would be longer on me than on the model, but it hit me in the same above-the-knee spot. This dress could be really cute on someone, but for me, nothing was wrong with it, it just wasn't pretty enough to justify the price (I'd rather go for a black halo dress at this price point) and it was shorter than I'd like.

I'm pretty pear shaped and the dress fit okay, so non pears may have problems with it being too big on the bottom.

    1. Oh also forgot to say - the sabrina dress has a little white ribbon bow on the front that's hard to see in pictures. That was a little over-the-top cutesy for my taste. I could do without the ribbon entirely, it's a little too Dorothy.

      Delete
    2. Autumn, thanks for the info on the Sabrina dress. The description specifically says that it hits below knee, so I was hoping the model shot was off. Sounds like it wasn't. If the length had worked, I'd have removed the silly ribbon. You've saved me some money! But I am sad the dress isn't what I hoped for.

      Delete
    3. I had high hopes for the Sabrina dress but I'm definitely not pear-shaped so fit may be a problem. The Director dress was way too large in the skirt so I'm sad to hear the Sabrina dress may be similar. I guess J.Crew is changing the dress fit model to accommodate more curvy figures. That will certainly leave me out. :^(

  23. I'm so irritated. Two new double serge cotton pencil skirts and BOTH split at the seam the first time I wore them - right where the seam meets the back slit. lol - I swear I'm wearing the right size, if anything it's a little loose. So annoying. I'd send them back if it wasn't such a hassle (I'm not in US). I otherwise like them so I guess I'll just have the seam fixed (and reinforced) but I find it very, very poorly done, JC.

I wanted to post this in 'Venting' but couldn't wait to blab!

    1. So funny, this EXACT same thing happened to me with the casablanca blue and some pink-ish (cannot remember the JC name -- how sad that we all know the JC colors!!) one. I had the P2 in the blue, and it split on the way to a JC B&M! My B&M had the regular 2 on sale for $42, so I bought it, and left the P2 for them to repair. My B&M does alterations and repairs and the charge (when they apply it) is very reasonable. This has never happened with any of my other JC pencil skirts.

    2. This has happened to both my wool No 2 skirts too but only after many wears which is very strange. They are very body con pencil skirts though and I find I can't take big strides in them...lol.

  24. I have received the colorblock cardis, I have ordered pink and yellow to try. I took my bigger sweater size in them. They are very cute but also very thin and see through, I think they will be hole prone. Similar in weight to bling button cardis they use to have. They may be good as super light layer in the summer. Definitely overpriced. I will post review on my blog tomorrow. I also have Altuzarra Sabrina dress waiting for me at home.

  25. Loitering around the Columbus Circle J Crew waiting for a friend.
Tried on a linen Tippi sweater for funsies-- I tried a navy/beige striped one that isn't online-- and it was totally see-through. A bummer. I also asked the SA if she had heard anything about how it holds its shape after washing, but she couldn't really tell me anything since it was her first day (totally fine!).
Side note: customer service at the Columbus Circle store was fifteen times better than at the 5th Ave store. =)

  26. I tried a few things from the new rollout.

The Lena sandals (flats), in yellow, were a disappointment. They look and feel very awkward on my feet and my feet slide in them. When I tightened them enough to stop the sliding, they dug into the front of my foot/leg. I couldn't tell if they fit TTS because the fit was so odd on me. The color is really pretty though.

The Cecelia Buckle sandals (flats), also in yellow, were just okay on me. I like the color of these and they were comfortable, but they didn't look that great on my feet. Also TTS.

The Audra patent sandals were total love. They are minimalist but they look and feel great on. These fit TTS. I tried them on in black and pink and loved both colors.

I ordered the Linen Swing Sweater in Stripe in two sizes to try. It runs large, as you would probably expect. I like to buy a M in J. Crew shirts and sweaters but the S fit me better.

The Tessa top probably runs a little big. I usually wear a 10 but took an 8 in this. It's a loose fit and a bit sheer but since it's loose I don't think you can really see through it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I just received the Fabiola leopard dress and I really like it - I went with my larger dress size, and the fit is nice. I really like the fabric, and the dress is nicely lined. I'm quite pear-shaped, and I think this is a good dress for my body type, so something to consider if, like me, you typically wear a larger size on the bottom than on the top.

  29. MB, I have tried the Sydney patent sandals in the poppy and they fit true to size for me. I am always a 7 1/2 in J Crew open shoes and an 8 in closed shoes. Would you let me know what store they were on sale in and colors. I have the casablanca blue patent in the Lila platform wedges and the color is gorgeous.

  30. Received my cafe capri in ultra eyelet in neon azalea and they are lovely.
I usually take a 2 in the cafe capri and these fit perfect on me. They look fabulous with my neon pink cashmere Isabel but would look great with a simple white shirt as well with some gold jewelry. If you love pink they could be dressed up or down depending on your mood. They are lined but the lining is not opaque, so flesh undies are necessary.

  31. A couple of Madewell reviews on my blog HERE.

Sandbar Sweater - soft cotton and nice colors but too boxy for my figure.

Lace-up Clog Bootie - a nice wood-soled, suede bootie for fall/winter. The heel is high and offset with the platform but the wood sole has no give at all so it may not work for everyone.

  32. I just had a strange conversation with J.Crew customer service, I called to do a WWFI for the downtown field jacket and was told that jacket was only available for pre-order atm. I said that's strange, i've been looking at the jacket on the website for a month and only when i went to order it I realized it was gone. The lady said "we had withdrawn it for the season and were re-releasing it in the future". How weird it that! But how J.Crew is that!!! 33. Natasha in watercolor floral - Love this shirt. I'm glad I sized down because it seems to run large IMO. I am small chested though. IRL there is more green in it than I realized, not a bad thing, I just didn't expect that.

Big shot dot circle skirt - This time I tried one size up because I prefer it to hit a little lower on my waist. The size 4 looked better below the waist (less pouf) but the size 6 looks better where it hits my waist. I am going to keep the size 6. I think this is such a cute skirt IRL. It says dry clean, has anyone washed theirs in the washing machine?

Villa dress in stripe - substantial cotton which I liked; however, I found it too low cut and short on me.

  35. The basket weave shift dress in neon rose arrived today. Unfortunately, it's going back immediately. The description says it hits above the knee, but it's more like mid thigh, which will not fly at my workplace! The catalog photo is very misleading. I'm 5'6" btw. Bummed as I was hoping to have a bright shift for work, and I really like the detailing on this dress.I got my normal size (2) and it was slightly snug, so if I were keeping it I would probably try a 4. If it were $50 instead of $150, I'd probably keep it for a going out dress. Oh well.

  36. For anyone considering the Factory stripe dress (I got the Azalea), the quality of the retail version is not there. Oh, it's not terrible as polyester dresses go but it's definitely not the best. The fabric is stiff and though it is lined (in acetate), you might still need nude small clothes to keep decent. This version is also approximately 2 inches shorter than the retail. Not a huge problem for me but taller gals should be aware.

I am keeping it for now because I really wanted the retail version. I will be on the lookout for a better sale price (it's worth no more than $30) before I head to the Crewlets late next month.

The factory lace-over tank was a little better overall albiet still over-priced. The cotton is on the thin side but the lace is pretty and the colors saturated. I got the Casablanca, Poppy and White. The white is a true white. They run large IMO but I wouldn't size down beacuse of my bust.

I am returning them becasue I hate patterns/prints on only the front on garments. It strikes me as unfinished, lol.

The factory crinkle flower tee in Lacquery Yellow was my best buy from this order. I might be biased as yellow is my favorite color but the slub cotton is better quality than the last retail tee that I bought. It looks like it might actually last more than one season. The color is a rich yellow, a couple of shades under Bright Sun.

  37. Went to Pentagon City twice this past week (never ever happens, felt kind of nice to leave the house, though) and tried on a ton of stuff. Some came home with me, some was wishlisted and some were all kinds of uck.

I did the IRL fitting room reviews at this post, includes the villa dress in stripe, the lucille dress in both ivory and purple, the scoopneck blouse in anchors away, the spindrift sweatshirt in both the blue and tan stripes, the ultra eyelet blouse in chili, and three in store only items, a pair of unfortunate pink pants (avert your eyes!), a spaghetti strapped sundress, and a really lovely Brompton clutch in a leopard print.

There's a lot here, but like I mentioned, I never go to the store anymore, so I guess I like to overdo it when I do. :)

  38. I just got the Altazurra Sabrina dress. It is form-fitting--the larger of my 2 dress sizes was the right fit. The gingham and cut of the dress are so cute BUT I hate the white grosgrain ribbon at the waist. It is cheap-looking, and completely sewn onto the dress so it can't be removed. From 2 feet away it looks like I stuck a piece of white electrical tape around the waist of my dress. Also, it didn't matter to me but some ladies might not like that the bust cups have underwire and slight padding. I was wearing a normal bra underneath so it sort of just looked like I was wearing a thicker-padded bra. I am on the fence as to whether I want to keep this or not due to the ribbon issue.

Also got the factory v-neck waist-tie maxi dress. This is basically like lasty year's doria dress. The quality of the jersey was actually better than the last retail jersey dress I tried (the thea), which was quite flimsy. It seemed solid quality, but I think I prefer my maxi dresses to be sleeveless b/c I was getting sort of a Mrs. Roper vibe from this. So I think it's going back.

Also tried the ultra-eyelet shell, and it is a lovely blouse except I think they ruined it with the high collar. I felt like I was wearing priest garb.

I have the fresco floral and petra dresses also on their way to me, and will report back. I ordered them the minute final sale went away.

    Replies
    1. Cass, I think you can remove the ribbon or at least a tailor can definitely remove it because there is gingham fabric underneath.
I also received the dress, my bigger dress size is a good fit but I could not fit the bra underneath. I think it is meant to be used without a bra since it has molded cups and boning and cotton lining.
I will have a review on my blog tomorrow.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the review of the Sabrina dress. It's sounding worse with each comment. I was hoping I could remove the ribbon but it sounds like it's not possible. Could you wear a belt over it and hide the ribbon? I ordered the navy gingham, I wonder if a strip of navy fabric could be sewn on in place of the ribbon. It may be a moot point anyway, the last thing I need is padded bra cups.

      Delete
    3. I'm afraid that if I remove the ribbon there might be tiny holes in the gingham fabric underneath since it is tightly sewn on. One could wear a thicker belt to cover it up but I don't personally have any already that would look good with it. As for the bra cups, there's def not enough support for me to go bra-less (I'm a D), but I don't mind wearing a normal bra underneath and the shoulder straps of the dress have those little snaps to hold in your normal bra straps. The dress is not like some JC dresses with the built-in corset that has elastic and hooks in the back. It just has the front cups and boning.

  39. My silk tie cami arrived today. I bought it to try in both the stripe and the purple, which is a dark royal blue.

PROS: it's beautiful! It has amazing details like pleating around the neckline and fabric-covered buttons. The silk is mid-weight, heavy enough not to be clingy yet still have a nice drape. I was expecting it to be satin and was pleasantly surprised with the matte finish of the fabric. It was cut loose but not shapeless and no gaping at the armholes, which sometimes happens because I'm petite.

CONS: I can't wear it with a convertible bra. I tried both a X-back and halter configuration, and my straps peeked out. I can't do strapless bras, but if you can, this is a beautiful piece!

Verdict: the bra situation is a deal-breaker for me, so it's going back. :(

  46. I finally pulled the trigger and got a purse I had been lusting after: the Baby Brompton. I used the red phone to get sahara dune. I was thrilled when it arrived...so much cuter in real life than online (the gold hardware is bright/shiny). But on my first day of carrying it I rested a newspaper on top of it while on the subway and there are already smudges. I wear dark denim A LOT so I know it will get dark blue stains on it in no time. The leather is really soft and so I think it will be risky to try and clean it regularly. The purse actually came with a tag that said not to wear it with dark colors, but dark colors are all I wear and this is supposed to be my everyday purse.

I'm going to return it today and order the Henna color instead. The size is great for me(fits a nook). Anyway, while I will miss the sahara dune color I think the Henna leather will stand the test of time.

  49. I received the factory perfect shirt in maxi check a couple of days ago - it's on the thinner side as far as cottons go, but it's not sheer at all and drapes beautifully. I'm a six (sometimes an eight if the shoulder cuts narrowly) and the medium was the perfect looseness on me. fours should probably size down to a small.

I only paid $20 and I'm very happy with it :)

  50. Just received my order for the Tessa blouse in chili and brilliant purple, the Front Pleat skirt in navy, and the Snakeskin belt in deep violet. The Tessa colors were gorgeous, but the fit (I ordered P00) did not flatter my petite, pearshape figure. It fit through the shoulders ok, but was too blousy up top to tuck in, and too narrow through the hips to flow freely, so it just kind of mushroomed out around my middle. Too bad, as I loved this in the pictures. The front pleat skirt in linen/cotton looks like a winner. I ordered a P2 (my usual JC skirt size) and it fit to perfection. The slight a-line flattered me, the only thing I'll note is it was shorter on me than shown on the model, which is weird because I'm only 5'1", but it hit about an inch above the knee. Not scandalously short, just shorter than expected. I think it works for casual summer occasions. Also, I love the snakeskin belt - great color, nice clean fit in the XS.

  51. Can anyone comment on the sizing/fit of the swimwear tops? I'm a true 36B but have heard in the past that the swimwear sizing may run large. TIA!
