J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Has anyone tried the Raglan Dress (item #79822)? I'm looking for any information on fabric, fit, etc.

It's been on my list for a while, but my store never received it and I haven't seen a review, and of course now it's Final Sale. TIA!

    1. I ordered a small and an xsmall (I think it might run big) during the 30% secret sale when it was not final sale. Once they arrive tomorrow, I'll let you know how they fit. I usually go with size small in t-shirts, occasionally xs.

    3. Hi Caitlin,

Just tried them on. It's a bit tricky. I fit into the XS just fine (I'm 34B). The dress/tunic is cut straight. I'm only about 5.5 and XS was too short, so I'm glad I also got the small, which was a good 3 inches longer and hit just 1 inch above my knees. Small was a little bit looser too but it looked just as cute. The fabric is soft and super comfy. Perfect for cooler spring day lounging or running errands. I'm happy I got it 30% off too.

    4. Thank you so much for the review! I'm concerned that it may be too short for me at 5'9 (I would definitely need the XS), but it sounds like it would be a great piece for running around on weekends.

  2. Did a short review with sizing and images of the J Crew Coralie Top on my blog. It runs one size larger than normal.

  3. Slightly OT, but I'm pretty sure Katie Holmes was wearing the Stripe Twisted Stitch Henley in these pictures (scroll down)from Baton Rouge, LA this past weekend. It's currently on Final Sale for $49.99.

did you have to alter the waist band on your new jeans since you sized up?

    1. Vava - I just wore a skinny belt so I wasn't pulling at them. I wanted them to fit but not be so tight. If you did want a tighter fit, you could take your normal toothpick size or one size up.

  6. Has anyone else experienced inconsistency in the fit of the wool cafe capris / Lolli pant from color to color? I got 2 pair in the mail yesterday, and while the Camel ones pull right on and zip up perfectly, the Bright Dahlia ones don't! I can't even zip them up!

I'm hoping to lose another 10 or 15 pounds during the course of the summer but still. What the heck?

    1. Adding, lest you think I'm a total dope, that both pair are the same size. I wonder whether I should call and inquire about an exchange...

    2. Elaine back in the winter when I was trying on the wool cafe Capri in stores, I noticed the Camel color fit different than the yacht blue or dahlia. The camel fit more snug than the others-- was bizarre!

      Delete
    3. Now I'm nervous about the bright dahlia ones I ordered. I hope they fit when they get here. I'll let you know.

      Delete
    4. Sorry I can't really confirm anything. My cafe capris in bright dahlia seemed a little roomy and then I noticed they sent me a size 6 inside a bag labeled size 4. They took care of it at the B&m and refunded and reordered. I did try on the blue wool capris instore and they fit tts Hope this helps. I would try to exchange or something.

  7. For fans of J Crew's "fanfare print", Kate Spade has a bunch of items in a nearly identical print.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Florence Broadhurst was the original creator of that print design.

  8. Some snapshot reviews of a few new items:
Villa dress: runs large and somewhat low cut.

Hilary dress: sooo cute. runs tts and has a great shape and length!

Seersucker blazer: want this so bad--it'll be the perfect topper for summer knit dresses. Runs tts.

Gondola stripe skirt: didn't get to try on my "usual" size, but the size 6 fit fine. Great shape, great colors. Fabric is dreamy.

Foulard print maxidress: I liked the material, but that was all. It was an epic fail on me.

  9. In case anyone missed my post on the weekend, I did a fashion editorial shoot and posted the photos on my blog (link here). I used quite a few J. Crew item, some of which are older items, and others of which are still available online. The model in my photos is a dress size 0/2 and 5'9"; for comparison, I am a dress size 4/6 and 5'4".

    Reviews of items:

Drapey sequin tank (item 32360), seen in photo #1: really good quality piece, especially at the sale price (it's currently a final sale item). Runs TTS.

Sequin tank (item 72589), seen in photo #6: also a very good quality piece, has a mix of transparent and opaque sequins which give it a lot of visual interest. I turned the top around back to front on the model to get the higher neckline at the back - the front has a deep scoop neckline. Runs TTS.

Factory pleated 'maxi' skirt in polka dot (sold out online, can't find item number), seen in photo #6: This is a great skirt, made of rayon/silk blend. Only problem is the creases coming out of the package are next to impossible to get out without professional help. Fit is slightly generous. I ordered a size 4, the smaller of my dress sizes and it fits me perfectly.

Enamel locket necklace (item 52045), in photo #6: Really pretty piece. The mint green adds a nice hint of colour against a neutral background.

Mona oxford pumps (item 55832), in photo #4: These seem to be languishing in the final sale, probably because they are a little retro looking with the oxford styling - however they were perfect as I was aiming for a 1920s inspired look. The glitter actually adds a nice touch. Manmade lining and sole. I took a risk and ordered FS with extra 30% off , and they are really quite nice and the size 8 fit me well. As with the other Monas, I think it runs half size small, best fits someone who normally wears US 7.5.

Painter stripe bateau tee (item 74916), photo #7: this tee is very nice to look at but a couple of issues - the serging on the side seam was coming loose straight out of the package and I was surprised to find that it runs TTS, which is to say, don't size down from your usual dress size. I ordered the XS which is my usual size in JC tee-shirts but it was too snug on me.

Double breasted gold button blazer (item 71042), in photo #2: Beautiful item, gorgeous deep orange colour. It is unlined heavy weight cotton blend jersey knit. The style is reminiscent of the series of cropped sweater jackets that came out around 2007/2008. Runs slightly generous - the XS fits me very well, and was a little boxy on my model (I had to clamp the back of the jacket to get a more tailored look on her). Definite keeper!

    Hope that helps!

  10. Has anyone tried the Midsummer Maxidress in Raj Paisley (Item 85021)?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I tried on some items this past weekend.

garment-dyed toothpick jeans - my ps and the sm told me to size up, but they were wrong. Sizing up was way too big. Even my regular toothpick size was a little big around the waist, but I wouldn't size down. All colors are nice, but I like the spearmint best. Hopefully I'll get them after markdown.

Soludos espadrilles - LOVE! I took my normal Euro size. Lemon zest will eventually be mine.

Olympia leather sandals - LOVE!! I took my normal shoe size (I size .5 up in JC ballet flats). I like that I don't have to unbuckle to get in and out. The leather footbed is SO nice. I've been hoping for a red sandal, so these came home with me. I'd love the beige on markdown.

Colorblock-stripe slash henley - love everything but how low cut it is. I don't want to have to wear a cami underneath all of my tees! I would pick this up on markdown and deal. TTS

Spindrift sweatshirt in stripe - already have the solid green and really like it. I did size up in the stripe and think it works, although I like the more fitted in the solid so I can wear it with pencil skirts. I'd love the navy when the solid goes on sale.

OT - Crewcuts is leaving my JC in May - so sad. :( Don't know why. Maybe we'll get more luxe items now??

    1. I found the same thing about the colorblock slash henley, I ordered on-line so rather than send it back I sewed on 2 snaps and it took care of the problem, it cost me all of $2.00. A seamstress would also do the job for a small charge.

  14. I need some help deciding what to do. I have seen the Tillary tote in warm sienna on so many blogs and I love it. Is it worth it for me to try and find one?? I am 5'2" and wondering if it is too much "bag" for me. I can't stop thinking about it though, I know most of you loved it. TIA

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @MB: I've seen it IRL and it's a lovely bag. I'm 5'3" and it's a good size. That said, it's heavy. Even with nothing in it (and the SAs in store were QUICK to pull out the stuffing for display, you wonder why), it weighs too much IMO. I also don't like bags with a short "drop". You can only carry it in the crook of your arm. If these points are not concerns for you, then it's a good pick. HTH

      Delete
    2. I bought it and had to return it for 2 reasons:
      1. it does weight a lot with my things in it
      2. leather quality was not that great in comparison to brands such as Botkier or Coach

      Delete
    3. Thank you both so much for your input!!! My biggest concern is weight and I think it might have to be a pass for me, I am truly sad about this because I love the look and shape of the bag. I am still searching!!

  15. I received my first shipment of the fire sale sweaters today and was thrilled with all of them. Wanted to share tips on few pieces in case there are popbacks and you're not sure if you can make the size work.

    - Tatted Lace sweater: I was late in deciding to snag this, so my only option was a large. (I normally would have grabbed a small.) I figured if it didn't work, it would be a great gift. I normally wear a small in pullovers, medium in Jackies. The large actually works! It's definitely more of a slouchy look, but one that is do-able and doesn't look uber-sloppy or off. The lace comes down really low, so you pretty much need a cami under it. Cute to throw on for cool summer evenings.

    - Handknit Fisherman Cardigan: I remember wanting this when it came out in store, as it's super old school to me. Has the gold buttons. It was orig $188, so it was crazy to get it for $14. Crazy. I got a medium, and am glad I did. It's on the cropped end of things and has bracelet-ish sleeves. I'm not sure if the small would have been shorter. I suppose it would have been a bit closer to the body, but this is a layering number for me. Handknit is lovely, and it's not scratchy. (Though if you're uber-sensitive, you'll need a solid layer probably.)

    - Cotton Rib Hoodie: I never tried this one on, but was ok with chancing it for $14. I went with a small. I could probably have sized down to an XS, but the small is totally fine for what it will be used for -- tossing on with some shorts or jeans on a cooler evening. It's a nice thick cotton, and it's a bright white. Cute little brown buttons.

    1. So I ordered the red one on the weekend- meant to get XS to be safe, but it sold out so went with XXS. I'd say it's TTS, since the smaller size just isn't as drapey. I find the orangey-red a little garish against the bright white (I may tea-dye it to get a more creamy contrast), and it is somewhat transparent though a nice thickness and fine with a nude bra.

Note that the cuffs don't have the lovely horizontal stripe as pictured in the April catalogue shots! But there is a nice trim inside the collar!

  19. dagmara, I tried the Lia sandal before it hit final sale. I ordered the mint, and my regular size 7.5 It runs TTS and the midheel makes it very easy to walk in. My main issue with this shoe is that the shoe covering is fabric and the lighter colours will show stains and dirt very easily, particularly under the toes, as the front part of the foot bed is also covered in fabric. It's pretty as a special occasion shoe but I wouldn't wear it as an everyday sandal for summer. HTH!

  25. Received the DOUBLE-BREASTED GOLD-BUTTON BLAZER (#71042)today. Love! Really nice navy knit blazer. Got my usual size S and the fit is great. The cotton fabric is nice, soft and quite thick. The navy color is really pretty. The gold buttons are kind of subdued and not too much. It's a casual look but that's exactly what I wanted. It will be a great topper over dresses or with jeans and shorts. (My only complaint is that it's 3/4 quarter sleeves and I wish it was long sleeves.)

Also got the FANFARE RUCHED BANDEAU TANK in blue orchard. Gorgeous! I'm a big fan of the fanfare print and already have the Jules dress and pencil skirt in this print. The color of this swimsuit is bright blue, so vibrant and pretty! Love the ruching. I need to get a tan fast.

  30. If anyone is wondering about the sizing on the new Saint James women's stripped tee...I find it fits TTS for your usual JC t-shirt size. There are a couple of significant differences from the original unisex Saint James shirt. First, although it is sized for women, it is still a boxy cut with drop shoulders. Those long-torsoed among us might find the length a touch short, but I found it ok for me (5'5"). The sleeves are more of a bracelet length than full length, which may be an issue for some. The other main difference is the fabric - it isn't the thick, slightly rough cotton of the unisex version, it's a lovely soft, smooth cotton, and thicker than JC tees (no risk of holes, I think). The colours are lovely. I really like this shirt!

  31. I received the long desired Fabiola dress in the leopard print today and have some thoughts.

    1) I probably would have been fine to buy it full price, but am THRILLED to have purchased it with the sale price and extra sale % off from last weekend (thank you, generous Canadian JCAs for sharing the code!).

    2) The fabric is beautiful, thick, suckered cotton with a nice handfeel from the interesting texture. I adore the print, the mixture of greens, purples, and white are so pretty together. It is fully lined in a slippery fabric (like a poly), which means it can be worn in the winter (unlike cotton lining which can get caught on tights, blegh).

    3) I am *this* close to getting back my waistline, maybe 3 inches, and I measured the waist and I verified that by the time I lose one more inch, I should be able to do up the dress and hopefully wear it out in public. The hips are generously sized for all of us pear shapes out there. In FACT, I will hands down, no hesitation, recommend this to any pear shapes on the fence. The bust and waist are teeny compared to the skirt, but because of the structure of the skirt IT DOES NOT look like a fifties housewife dress, and in my world, if a sheath (or at least something that mimics a sheath) can fit my hips and thighs and be the proper size up top, it is a great day. Plus with the v-neck and shirring at the bust, it gives those who have nothing or little up top a little "boost" if you will.

I did get the size 8, and feel like had I gotten the 6 it would have been too tight on the area right below my bust (where empire waistlines typically are). That means this dress runs small through the bodice compared to other J. Crew dresses...I have MANY dresses with full skirt or generous hips from J. Crew that I wear a 4 (!!!) in because I sized for my bodice. So if you have any thought that you should get measurements, do so...this is a final sale item. :)

Hope that helps someone out there, and maybe next week I can get an IRL review up.

  35. Anyone have sizing tips on the Zip-front T-Shirt Dress or Colored denim shorts (also color info on this, how neon is neon persimmon)?

I should not be buying anything else after my last purchase but just in case...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Shimmer skirt - might be really good for pear shapes. For me, not so good. The waist measurement for my normal size seemed small so I bought one size up. It fit great at the waist but was huge everywhere else. I never have this problem with J.Crew pencil skirts which generally fit like a glove. So, I can't recommend this skirt for anyone who has proportional waist/hips unless you want to get it tailored. I am too cheap for that, especially for a "fancy" skirt that won't get worn much.

  37. Does anyone have the Amie maxi dress (navy stripe)? I am in love with it, but I don't know if my hips are. Can anyone comment on fit? Especially if you are cursed, I mean pear-shaped. Thanks!

    Replies
    1. I have the navy with white stripe Amie from this year and am definitely a pear shape. I usually wear 2-4 in JC pencil skirts and 0-2 in tops. I found that the XXS was the best size for me in this dress.

I think it balances out my pear-ness by adding some volume on the top and the relatively straight bottom doesn't add too much on the bottom.

  38. One more - white denim short. LOVE these, but they run large. I am a 29 in matchsticks, 30 in toothpicks, but I needed a 28 in these shorts. The 29 was all baggy at the front, yuck. They are nice though... maybe on sale?

  39. If anyone is considering the Pointelle cashmere sweater on sale I tried it in store the other day and find it to fit small. I tried my usual XS and it just fit. I never size up in crewneck styles but I would probably do in this one. It is lovely but very thin, doesn't feel like you are wearing cashmere (it is soft but not warm at all). In stores it also comes in festival green (gorgeous)

  40. Samantha, I have the zip-front dress and love it. I sized down. Try belting it, too - even cuter. It's very slimming - the most flattering knit dress I have from JC with or without the belt.

    Replies
    1. I've tried the Dottie - just arrived in the mail yesterday. It is really pretty - a very classic look.

They didn't have my usual size (2) so I ordered the 4 - it was a tad big, but being a wrap dress, not so big that it wouldn't work out. If you're big busted, you might need to size up. However, I'm not gifted in that way, and now that the 2 is back in stock, I'm going to order the 2 for comparison.

It was also somewhat low cut for me and I would need to add a snap or hook to keep it from being too low on me - this aspect might be better on a taller girl (I'm 5'3")

      Delete
    2. Thanks LilyBart, you are my exact size and sounds shape wise as well. I am 5'3' and not so gifted on top either :).

  44. I tried the Linen Dot Popover in store yesterday. I love it except that the fabric snags like crazy! I had the SA bring me three different ones and they all had big snags and pulls. And one of them already had some pilling under the arms. Has anyone else experienced this, or did my store just get a bad batch?

  45. I've never owned anything in leopard print before, and never thought I would, but in the past week I've purchased:

    - the no. 2 pencil in leopard
    - the long no. 2 pencil in abstract leopard
    - the leopard perfect shirt

I'm kind of on the fence about the abstract leopard skirt so far - the fit is very flattering but I have trouble styling it. I haven't received the other leopard skirt yet, but I unexpectedly LOVE the leopard perfect shirt.

I think the perfect shirt and I are a great match in general and I couldn't believe how I didn't want to take off the leopard shirt - and how I wanted to match it with every other crazy pattern in my closet!

If only Talitha and I were such a good match! Alas, I have broad shoulders and the $70 I spent on the final sale feather paisley Talitha blouse was money waisted. I'm wondering if I could have it made into something else by a tailor. Probably not. Sigh.

Speaking of feather paisley though - I love the feather paisley pencil skirt!!! I bought the larger of my 2 pencil skirt sizes and like to wear it a little lower on my hips (I have ugly knees!).

I'm wearing the lifesaver print popover today. It's a nice deal, though I probably could have sized down. Only annoyance is that one of the buttons keeps popping open, which is a problem I don't typically have.

I also love the cotton open stitch cardigan in beechwood - or at least I love it for its $13.99 price tag.

  46. LilyBart, I splurged on the painted rope skirt last week. It is a gorgeous skirt, the fabric is a very substantial wool/silk blend with a beautiful lustre. I took the larger of my two dress sizes (size 6). It falls just above the knee on me - skirt length is 21.5", and I'm 5'4". HTH!

    2. Hi AppGal, I love mine too. But like Jruby18, after a day in the office with these babies, my feet were a mess. My BF tuned me up with his friction balm (like a Dr. Scholl's product) to prevent blisters, and now the shoes are fantastic. I'd say JC must have made too many of this shoe and now need to move inventory. I think they were worth it when I forked over $99, of course with the current promo, they're a smoking hot deal. I say go get them!

  49. Can anyone advise on how the telegraph skirt fits in comparison to a typical no.2 pencil skirt? Is the telegraph slimmer in the hips or the same?

    Thanks!

  50. Can anyone tell me if the Viv flats are actually comfortable? The toe looks like a killer, but I ordered them in patent green today because I couldn't resist the sale!

  51. Just got my shipment today from my secret sale order last week. Reviews of:

No. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge cotton - a great deal at $42 and not final sale. I adore the royal violet color, which is a bright but not neon, cool purple. It's thick and well-made, cut for modest curves--the hips aren't quite shaped perfectly for me, but given my crazy body shape (narrow hips, curvy butt, thick waist) it's a miracle that I can fit into any pencil skirts at all. I ordered the 2P, which fits similarly to the 0 regular and is comfortable on my 28" waist.

Blythe blouse in silk - The sand dune went on backorder as I was checking out, so I swapped for the neon rose, which is BRIGHT. I have no real occasion to wear a silk blouse, but the 2P is the right size for me. A teensy bit tight in the shoulders due to no stretch, but I wouldn't size up. Sleeves are perfect (I'm 5'2" with short torso and arms). I normally wear a 2 in other stores and a 0 at J.Crew, so I'd call this TTS.

Cotton waffle pullover - Snagged this in copper XS, which I'd tried on briefly in-store at a higher price point. I could probably wear the XXS as well--I'm between those two sizes normally--but I didn't want to risk it on final sale. The XS also fits well, slouchy and comfy. Rust orange is a new color for me, but I foresee wearing this sweater a LOT in the coming spring transition weeks.

Vintage cotton long-sleeve V-neck tee in stripe - Bright violet, also XS. I think the XXS would be too clingy, but the XS is a little big in the shoulders. The V cuts a bit low and I can only wear it with a structured nude bra. That said, it's a nice pop of color and a spring-transition weight for a whopping $3.50.

My measurements are 32AA-28-35 (33" at high hip, and 29" waist at certain times of the month), slim apple body type. I usually wear XS/0/2 in dresses at Anthropologie, and consistently size down to 0 (or between XS and XXS) at JC.

  52. I just posted some reviews of sale shoes -- red Valentinas, patent Valentinas, Drea Peep Toes, Calf Hair Valentinas, and Mona suede -- here. Also Seville Espadrilles (not sale). Love them all!

  53. AdAstra - I own a telegraph pencil skirt and a no. 2 wool pencil in the same size. I did not notice that either fit differently. They feel different because double-serge wool drapes differently than super 120s (much thinner). I would say go with your normal size.

Interestingly, I have a stretch velvet pencil skirt from years ago and I compared it to this years' double serge wool pencil skirt. They are exactly the same size even though they are a good six years apart.

  54. So this may be a crazy thought but…

I like the abstract leopard pencil skirt (which, by the way, is all the way down to $48.99 this morning - half of what I paid!) but I have another leopard pencil skirt I like better on the way, and I think it's the colors in the abstract leopard skirt that aren't quite working for me. It's a cotton skirt, and I like the texture of the fabric and the fit a lot. Would it be crazy to try a dye it some other color? Has anyone attempted anything like this with a similar garment?

No advice on dyeing, but the print is growing on me.

  55. Does anyone have a review of the Mezzaluna bag? Just curious of what it looks like in real life! Thanks!

  56. Has anyone done a review on the cafe capri in ultra eyelet? I love these pants but I wonder how they fit?

  57. Has anyone tried the Lilah dress? It caught my eye immediately, but now I'm worried about the length. How "below-the-knee" is it?

  58. Review on Lilibeth patent sandals, purchased the casablanca blue which is navy. First glance, I loved them but then I tried them on, NOT TTS, my normal size 6 was at least 1/2" too long. Plus on the back there is a stretchy piece, I guess to help them stay on. But it just digs into your heel, not sure if it would loosen a little with wearing but... they are going back.
