J.Crew of Season's Past: {a look in the closet}

It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".

This post features the Bubble necklace (item 92687; $150.00). This piece came out a few years ago (Spring 2008, I believe). Thankfully, J.Crew reintroduced this piece in several more candy-inspired shades. Loves it!

What are your thoughts on the look(s)/item(s) from the past? Do you find the look(s)/item(s) classic or do you think they are dated?

  1. When I first saw the image, I couldn't be sure what you were going to comment on--besides the necklace, her cuff, fireball bracelet and shoes are all covetable. Ah, those were the days!

  2. I know I am in the minority but I never liked this necklace at all.......glad there is lots to chose from in the world of jewelry! :) I would not even wear it if someone gave it to me!

  3. I used to not like this necklace either and thought I'd never be caught dead in something similar. However, for some reason I have really warmed up to this style! I have now bought 2 replicas from eBay and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They add such a fun pop of color to a basic outfit!

  4. Ladies, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify a J Crew dress of "yore". I won a sea turtle mosaic shift dress on Ebay recently and love the style. Does anyone remember the original name or when it was released (2007? 2008?) or if it came in any other prints/colors? Thanks!

    1. I think the print you are referring to is the Batik Turtle. It came as a Clea Tank too.

  5. Oh, those Tivoli snakeskin flats!!! Talk about the one that got away... Sarah, I thought the same thing! I have that cuff, and several others... wish they'd bring those back!

    1. Yes! I wonder, since they brought back the frog necklace (in a way), among others from that time, if they'd do a reissue of some of those big cuffs. I'd be curious to see how they reimagined them.

    2. Ditto on the Tivoli snakeskin flats. I adored them, waited too long and missed out. Makes me so sad to see them again.

    3. i remember seeing those shoes in TJ MAXX during that whole craziness. i think they were originally over $200!! unfortunately, they weren't my size.

  6. I think the necklace is pretty, but it's much too large and heavy to be practical for me. My neck would be aching after wearing it just a few minutes! I'm surprised so many petite ladies like it.

    1. I only tried on the current version, it's actually really light, given the amount of beads and findings. Can't speak for the older version, if it's heavier or lighter.

Egyptomaniac made a smaller-scale version which I think captures the look very well but doesn't overwhelm. I'm 5'3" and would prefer a smaller version.

  7. Alexis, I love the necklace - it brings such a great pop of color. But then again, I am a huge fan of statement necklaces.

  8. So great to hear everyone's take! The overall photo is pretty amazing too- its just styled to perfection!

Initially, I was one of those who did not like the Bubble Necklace. I thought it was too big, the design was meh, and the price was outrageous. But I am a believer after getting the red version for just $50 during the holidays. It is worth it and more! It definitely adds that something to my outfit and I get compliments on it all the time. I just love it! :)

  9. I love the bubble necklace, however the price.....not so much. Plus while I like the style, the size is a bit overwhelming even on my 5'9" frame. About a year ago I came up with a pretty easy DIY version that costs around $20-$30 to make. The tutorial
is here. I bought most of my supplies from Etsy, and have been able to make several different versions in some great shades not offered by J Crew, plus the DIY version is scaled down in size so it's more universally flattering.

    1. I have been meaning to thank you for the tutorial on your blog. I am just gathering the pieces to make a smaller version of this following your instructions. I love the original but it's just too overwhelming. Your version is much more palatable and just as beautiful.

  10. I have the original in black, turquoise and papaya and wear them often. I love this necklace so much. It is a statement and it gets compliments every time I wear it.

  11. I have a royal blue bubble necklace, picked off at resale, so I'm not sure what season it was. That's the only time I've seen it on the consigner circuit.
