J.Crew Factory gets a Makeover {plus 30% off sale items}

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Mei (in this post) who let us know that J.Crew Factory online (click here to view) has been redesigned! The main page has a more polished appearance, very similar to J.Crew's main site. I love that they are showcasing 12 different outfits composed of Factory items. (Of course they used one of their favorite catchphrases: obsessions.)

"Thanks!" to Irina, who shared the following email that lets us know that J.Crew is also offering an additional 30% off all Factory sale items (no min) with promo code LOVEIT. This offer expires Sunday, February 5, 2012. Irina also shares that brick & mortar (B&M) Factory Stores are also running this promotion.

Will you be checking out the Sale section at J.Crew Factory Online? Are there any items you are hoping to see or to get? Do you like the redesign of Factory Online?

  1. I like it! And they also included model shots for some of the product pages now, like we've been asking here on this blog ;)

  2. Went into the local factory today and picked up the zebra tee for 30% off. Made me smile. I like the revamp.

  3. Looks cute, but still no 'search' function though.

  4. I like the new look at Factory and appreciate the model/mannequin shots.
I don't, however, understand what the point of Factory is supposed to be?! It looks like JCrew, is priced like JCrew (um, $108 knit blazer?) but is NOT JCrew because it generally gives you less product views and information... so they skimp where online shoppers need more but still carry the price tag.
Sorry if this has been discussed, but with the update the line is getting blurry. Why not just make it all JCrew or call it something else entirely?

  5. Maybe I should mention that I've never bought Factory items because I always thought there was "supposed" to be a qualitative difference and wouldn't want to pay the same for less.

  6. Marisa, I second your confusion. I really don't understand Factory anymore.

It used to be that the price and product differences vs. Retail were substantial, and you could pick up some real Retail leftovers at highly discounted prices there in the Sale section.

Nowadays, at least at my Factory store, the prices are often higher than my typical sale-plus-promo Retail purchases, and the Factory knock-offs of Retail styles and prints are coming so fast and furious that it's a blur to me. The revamped site w models only makes me more confused.

Would love other s JCAs' opinions ... WHAT (and for WHOM, from a target perspective)exactly is Factory supposed to be these days?

  7. I think this grew out of one of those survey questions they asked -- I think they asked it on their FB page (?) ...about what people use the catalog for, and overwhelming the responses were to put together outfits. So it looks like they're trying to meet that need for factory as well, which is very smart.

I do agree with Marisa that some of the prices seem so high for 'Factory' items. Marisa, a lot of times they recreate more expensive items in a less-expensive fabric or with less detail. It just kind of depends on the item. I miss the days when their Outlets used to have first-run merchandise and you could paw through it all like a treasure hunt. :(

Has anyone seen the crinked cotton tunics in the Factory stores? The one I want is sold out but I might motor to the Crewlet about 40 mins away if they have them in stock to try on...

  8. I will admit that I've only purchased from factory once (that I can remember anyway) only because the price was great with my rewards card. I'd gotten the Chambray blazer and the white linen blazer.

Other than that I usually look at the pictures, look at the price then proceed to cackle profusely!!

  9. Marisa, I don't understand either.

It used to be that the Factory price points and products were more differentiated from Retail. And like Elaine, I used to find Retail gems there at greatly reduced prices on occasion. Now the prices are often higher than my usual sale-plus-promo Retail purchases, and the knock-offs of Retail styles are prints are coming so fast and furious that it's a blur.

I would love to hear other JCAs' thoughts on Factory these days ... WHAT is it trying to be (vs. Retail), and for WHOM?

  10. Sorry ... make that styles AND prints.

  11. I actually ordered the cotton blazer in natural. It was a good price (on sale for $117CDN) and is the exact colour I was searching for for Spring. I do have a navy wool blazer from the factory store in Maine and found it to be good quality, so I am hopeful!

  12. Thumbing through the Sunday ads this morning and ... have you seen the JCPenney re-launch advertising? Bright outfits on models against a white background?

Looks like an absolute rip-off of JC. Wow.

  13. my favorite jcrew model (i think her name is angela?)! i'm sick of those two skinny eastern european blonde girls they've insisted on using in all the catalogs lately.
