"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Removing certian items from the website during a promo sale. Way to stay classy J. Crew.

  2. How convenient the Tillary Tote became a 'presale' item just as soon as the promo started and was thus taken off the website. Perhaps it will magically become available online again on Thursday. Jcrew has hit a new low.

  3. A number of the Look Book items are due to ship in June. June? Their inventory mgmt is such that some items will probably hit stores & a markdown before pre-orders ship from the lists.

  4. Well this is a first. Received someone else's entire order last night, including their packing slip. WTH?! Has this happened to anyone else before? I've already emailed my online PS, but have yet to hear back from him.

Carolyn (I think? Not positive of the name and I can't check the slip now) from Brooklyn, I hope you read this! I have your order.

And if anyone has my P0 Minnie pants in coal, please email me!!

  5. Annoyed Customer: You should be able to get the 20% off FABFEB promo applied if you place a presale order for the Tillary Tote today.

  6. Jackie,

Yes, I had that happen to me once. I called and it was easily taken care of...the other person got my order...we just ended up mailing them to each other!!! (Got reimbursed too I believe.)

I am so bored with J.Crew right now. I haven't bought anything since early December. Nothing exciting or unique is drawing me in; I am saving money though and that feels GOOD:)

  7. Should have posted this yesterday under reviews, but now that it's a new day... I ordered the blythe shirt in neon rose after seeing the Redbook feature on different ways to style a button-down. Well, I shouldda known, it really is NEON! (it didn't look that bright online) And an obnoxiously bright shade at that. Apologies to anyone who likes this shade; I hope you show us how to rock it. Sadly, I can't; didn't even bother to take it out of the plastic wrap to try it on.

Wish J Crew would do prettier saturated shades in this beautiful blouse. I want colors that don't scream "so last season".

  8. Just got my 30% off order yesterday, and I have to vent about the necklace tee and the striped bateau sweater. The tee is just poorly cut and so unflattering. The fabric is thin, but soft and the neckline detail is pretty, but the shape--loose in the body and arms--ruins it. This one's going back.

The sweater has a great orange/beige stripe pattern but very coarse fabric that feels awful against the skin. It says it's a mostly cotton with a little bit of nylon blend, but it feels like stiff acrylic. The length is cropped which is a shame, but it's made even worse by the fact that the sweater doesn't narrow at the bottom, nor does it cling properly. The end result is that it just hangs there, surrounding my waist but not really adorning it, ready to catch the breeze. In fact, I feel a heavy draft when I wear it. This one is final sale, so I'm stuck with it :(

  9. This is sort of a vent, but why does J. Crew take so long to ship sometimes? Sometimes I get the confirmation email the next day, but I made my last order on Friday and it still hasn't shipped.

  10. I agree with the bait and switch during promos -- LAME! And deceptive! Boo on you J Crew!

Also boo (again) on whoever thought it was a good idea to print those silly large-scale poster-like online order inserts advertising cashmere. So dumb and wasteful. Please just recycle them all in Lynchburg and be done with it!

  11. I'm still waiting on an order from the first week of December. Last time I called CS, I was told that it would absolutely ship by February 1st. And three weeks later, still waiting.

Also, a lot of my orders lately, especially on final sale, have included items that looks severely used and abused. Two weeks ago I had to return a pair of the wool cafe trousers with the hem taken out and pockets cut open. And last night I received an ipad case in the blue almost-ashbury print, and it is beautiful, but completely scuffed, the corners are cracked, and the box looks like it got run over by a truck.

The upside to all of this is that the new (or just new to me?) manager at my local b&m has been really fantastic about taking these returns, even though they were final sale.

  12. Just received my Talitha blouse in Vintage Berry, which J.Crew.com describes as "a clean silhouette rendered in endlessly feminine silk." Except that the tag says 100% Rayon.

Not cool. It's a pretty top, but I'm sending it back on principle.

  13. @Whitney- The Talitha is not silk?! Why have I been stalking the green one which has been back ordered forever. Well, that saves me some $$$. : )

    ReplyDelete
  14. Whitney, I'm so disappointed! I also ordered the vintage berry Talitha and it is en route. Might as well save that box of returns until the order gets here because I do not want a rayon blouse, especially for the ridiculous Canadian price of $130. Get your act together J.Crew!

  15. FFM and Annoyed Customer: I tried to order a pre-sale item yesterday and my PS wouldn't honor the 20% off. I would be quite frustrated if others are able to do so...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm also annoyed with the immediate waitlist of certain items. The Elinor dress in polka dot was waitlisted until March 16th on THE DAY IT HIT THE WEBSITE. Would it not make more sense to simply delay the release until say, March 16th?

  17. Found THE perfect swimsuit in this year's swim collection - waited about 2 weeks after it debuted to order, went online to order and the top is sold out in my size. I contacted my personal shopper for help locating one, and she said there were none in stores and it's completely out-of-stock with no likelihood of producing more. WHAT THE HECK J.CREW??? Then she gave me 4 "alternative" suggestions, including a one-piece in the same color, a TUNIC (?!), and two solid suits. SOOO FRUSTRATING!!!

  18. @ Catherine K, xoxo: As I was pulling it out of the bag, I actually said out loud to the dog, "Huh, this doesn't feel like...RAYON? What the what???" And then I pulled the website up on my iPad to see if I'd misread the description. Nope, it says "Silk" in two places on J.Crew.com. I would consider this top for under $65 in FS, which was how I got my paisley Talitha, but I'm not interested in paying $110 for a Rayon blouse.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Whitney: I sure hope you are not paying shipping to return that Talitha. You were told you were receiving a silk blouse, but were shipped a rayon blouse...THEIR mistake.

  20. What?!#
That's the sound of me running to check the label on my Talitha blouse, also in Vintage Berry.
I could have sworn it said silk, but most importantly it feels like silk.

I don't understand what happened @Whitney, mine IS silk. Looks like it, feels like it (so soft and floaty), is labelled as 100% silk and I've fallen in deel infatuation with it.

Still waiting for it to go on sale (do Talitha's ever go on sale? ) so that I can return the full price one...

  21. Thank you for clarifying why several items I want to purchase are suddenly missing from the website during the 20% off promotion. I was seriously confused - if they are going to exclude those items, why not just indicate that and still make those items available at full price?

I ordered the Cashmere Boyfriend Sweater on sale in Dark Poppy after purchasing the same sweater full price in the Citron (I love it!). What showed up yesterday was a sketchy faded heather MEN's sweater that had no internal tags indicating fabric content, season, style number etc. So now the sale sweater is sold out and I can't even purchase the full price sweater in another color because it's taken down for the promotion. Not cool, J.Crew.

  22. @ krb: I'm calling CS when I get home tonight to see if they have any insight into the silk/rayon situation. Am definitely planning to ask for free return shipping.

@ D*ska: Oh, now that is VERY interesting. Is J.Crew making two different blouses? Sewing two different tags into the same blouse? Slowly switching from producing this garment in silk to producing it in rayon and monitoring feedback to see if anyone notices before they change the verbiage on the website?

This strikes me as very sneaky, and I don't like sneaky.

  23. @ Annoyed customer, FFM & AppGal, : JC would not let me pre-sale the Tillary Tote w/ the 20% promo. :(. I had already ordered it a week ago, so asked CS if they could simply apply the promo to that order which is not scheduled to ship til May (!). The answer was no, no, no. Silly me.

  24. I was considering buying the Talitha today, then this conversation re silk vs. rayon gave me pause. Now I am intrigued and will order it just to see if I get the genuine article. I'm not even sure it's worth $130 if it's silk... I foresee myself buying a lot less from them this year if this sort of thing continues.

  25. @Whitney: please do let us know what you learn from cs...that top is (or was) on my wish list :(

  26. This yet another gripe about J. Crew's declining quality. My Nora Calf Hair Ballet Flats already have scuff marks and bald spots. Also, a small chunk of the patent leather strip at the heel of the shoe came off. I've worn them less than 5 times!

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ Whitney, I saw several times the solid Talitha in stores in the green and navy and it is definitively silk. I have the wildcat one and the rayon fabric is and feels very different so I am curious to know what happened. Your blouse SHOULD be silk!

    ReplyDelete
  28. AppGal and EverydayChick: I'm really surprised to hear they wouldn't apply the promo. It's always been allowed in the past. Is this another new change in policy as of late? If so, it definitely isn't a change for the better...at least not for customers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. FFM: Here was the response from my PS: "I would be happy to extend your educator discount to it; however, we are not able to extend the current promotion to a future order. You would still receive the free shipping if done as a pre-order."

Sounds like a new policy because I've definitely ordered pre-sale items with an at-the-time current promotion in the past. Boo indeed.

  30. Silk Talitha vs. Rayon Talitha: I called CS and told them that I had received a Talitha blouse that was supposed to be 100% silk, but the tag said that it was 100% rayon. After the rep confirmed the style#, she asked to put me on hold while she checked the Talitha stock. After about 3-5 minutes, she got back on the line and said that she had found a Vintage Berry Talitha blouse in stock and the tag said 100% silk. No idea why I would have received one with a tag that said it was rayon. She said that she would immediately credit me for the blouse that was sent to me as well as the shipping fee, and if I still wanted the blouse she would send me another one and flag it for quality control, meaning that someone would hand-check my order for accuracy before it left the warehouse. I agreed to this plan b/c I do like the blouse and the color, and the CS rep had been very apologetic and accomodating. I asked her if she knew of any plans to change the fabric content on the Talitha, and she said, "No, that is supposed to be a silk blouse."

It looks like my blouse was a fluke, and J.Crew was quick to fix the situation, so I'm satisfied...unless the replacement blouse shows up with wonky seams or something, haha.

  31. I received a cashmere sweater in the mail today. It was on final sale. When it arrived I noticed that there was a retail security tag left on the sweater. How did this slip by someone? And do all stores have the device to take this off? Has this happened to anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Has "final sale" always been such that, if you received a defective item, you cannot return/exchange it? I had always assumed that if something was wrong (stain, tear, missing buttons, etc.), that you could get a replacement even if it was final sale. It was my 1st time getting a defective final sale item, and the rep told me that she would grant me an exchange as a one-time courtesy, even though it was defective. I think that's ridiculous for online sales, since you cannot check items before purchase. I guess I've been lucky w/ final sale in the past, but now I don't know if I'll risk it again.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Whitney: Thanks for getting back to us regarding your Talitha. Very weird mistake on their part! I'm glad that JCrew was appropriately responsive and that your story has a happy ending!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Hwin,I have always been able to return defective final sale items. If you get more, just return them.

  35. I am venting, along with others, about the ridiculous "waitlisted" time frames. It is such a waste of packaging. Hi Fred, I have so many "waitlisted" items right now I can't keep track. I have found some ship earlier than anticipated. I think they are actually waiting to see about demand and then ordering what they need. Just a guess. Unless they email you and cancel your item you should get it "eventually".

  36. My collection viv bow flats (henna) are splitting at the rear seams. My size is completely sold out. They are doing a wwfify but will not honor the original price I paid which was 30% off but are offering the current promo that ended last night! Don't think I will be buying any more jcrew shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Whitney, that is so weird about the blouse. My green Talitha is definitely silk. If the Talithas were rayon, I wouldn't even look at them twice. Rayon is too high maintenance. Ugh. I hope this was just a one time fluke...

    ReplyDelete
  38. FYI: I posted a picture of the Talitha blouse with tag on my blog if anybody is curious...we live in an age of "pics or it didn't happen", haha. I would link to the post but my work computer blocks them.

  39. I am seething right now - just got off the phone with J. Crew customer service...

I ordered the blouson dress in royal paisley on final sale for $48. It does not suit me at all, so the logical thing to do seems to be to resell it.

However, it arrived without tags so it's going to be virtually impossible to resell. I asked J. Crew if they would at least exchange it for one *with* tags and they said no!

On top of that, they treated me like I was a horrible person for wanting to resell the dress.

I am so mad and disappointed. I spend thousands of dollars a year at J. Crew - I can't believe this is how they treat their loyal customers.

I'm seriously thinking about boycotting them.
