J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  6. I reviewed the mixed media skirt and the Alexa Chung for Madewell Risky Business striped shirt in last week's post. I highly recommend both. If you can catch the mixed media skirt on a pop back or have a personal shopper find it for you, it is well worth the money. As much as I hate to say this, I was obsessed with finding it! It's truly something I will wear for years, a classic piece.

  7. Remember all those 30% off? Well, I'm now going thru my boxes and am in trouble as there are some big ticket items I really like!

MiH Jeans® breathless jeans in Pinetop: super tight. But on second try they felt so much better. They are straight leg, meaning they don't peg in at the ankle, which you may know I don't like. So they fit at or just below the ankle bone, perfect for flats, and the bottom hem stands away from your ankle in true straight leg fashion. VERY NICE jean material, with not a lot of stretch. Pinetop is a bright faded blue perfect for white tops, looks good with navy, grey...spring/summer written all over them. I got my normal jean size.

Valentina in grey leopard-so I do really like them. Got my normal JCrew size and put heel pad in back. SO....are these a classic to hold on to? At $135, I would love to keep them in my closet to pull out when I need them. Maybe 1-3 X a season? Are they classic enough to wear year after year?

  8. Hi ladies,

Dream striped Vneck (navy/acorn) - I sized down one size in this sweater based on some helpful JCA recommendations. It fits well in the arms, chest etc and lenght wise. I had wanted the body just a little slouchier but I think my normal size would be too boxy and not fit right in the arms.
The sweater is thicker than I expected and I only tried it on for a minute so I can't speak to pilling which is my concern with dream material. I like the colors although the navy is so dark it looks black at times. I think I'm keeping this one.

Matchstick cords in Lemon Gimlet- I like the cords but I'm on the fence about the color. The yellow is different than I thought it would be based on the catalogue and my computer screen. I hate it when that happens. :) Does anyone have thoughts on this yellow color if you've seen it IRL? It's darker and just a different tone than I expected.

Palm Springs Necklace (vibrant coral) - The necklace is heavier than expected which is probably good but just makes it a little uncomfortable. I like the color along with the clasp colors, I think it will be great for spring/summer. It reminds me of older JCrew necklaces.

  9. Cashmere shawl poncho with kangaroo pocket in grey and navy - I sized down from my normal small to x-small. Really really cute. It's still slouchy so glad I sized down. I also found that this year's cashmere is not pilling as fast.

Painter striped 3/4 length shirt in blue - definitely size up. The material is thicker than past painter shirts but I could barely put the small (my normal size) on and the medium was not much bigger. Hopefully this one will not get holes.

Cashmere v-neck in navy - TTS. The v-neck is not as deep as last years which is good for me. It's a keeper.

Wintress puffer in black - TTS. I really like this especially with the gold buttons. I like this better than last year's Mirabel puffer. Very warm - not sure if it's waterproof or not though.s

  10. Jan, just a warning, I too bought the Dream stripe v-neck and while I've only tried it on at home a couple times, it's already starting to pill under the arms and along the sides. I'm generally happy with the fit, and though I wish I'd purchased the navy colorway like you did because the peach is way peachier than it looks online, I'm still going back and forth on whether I should return it. I only have a couple more days to decide so we'll see... I think it may come down to whether I get over to the store and find something I want to exchange it for, assuming the lines will be long. Otherwise it may be relegated to my "just running down the street to grab a coffee on a Sunday morning" ensemble. Disappointing because it really is cute.

DaniBP, thanks so much for your review of the Swish skirt in plaid. I'd been eyeing this at full price and during the numerous weeks it languished in the sale section at $199.99, and of course when the price dropped to $99.99 it became final sale and I didn't want to risk another FS lemon. Good to know I made the right choice!

  11. pathos, the Valentinas should be wearable for years. The d'Orsay style is quite classic and a little more feminine than a basic pump. The modest heel is wearable with jeans, skirts, suits or dresses and is not at all trendy. Animal print is a perennial fall/winter pattern but you could easily wear them year round if you like the look.

  12. Dara, thanks for the heads up re: pilling.:) I had better try it on again and decide if I really like it. That's disappointing re: pilling.

  14. I second Michelle's review of the Vintage Cotton LS vneck tee in Stripe (item 61038). I have it in the navy and champagne colours. Have worn both a couple times in the last 2 weeks since I bought them. I have worn them under my jackets and blazer, it's a great layering piece. Took my usual Perfect Tee size (M). They were a bit baggy when I tried them on in the store but I washed/dried them at home (cold water/low heat setting) and they shrunk up perfect...just enough to feel soft and cozy. I am wanting the other colours too, I love that tee so much.

  17. Carolyn from Vancouver here..
My online/sale/30% off order is to arrive now on the 29th...will .
I said to heck with it and headed to the B&M (Seattle's U Vilage) on Boxing day.
The store was small. There was 30% off of sale item ( final sale) I purcased only a skirt (black/night watch tartan for $32 US.) But I ramble around the store looked and tried on.
I found the SA's very polite considering it was busy and people were returning stuff etc. We were given small bottles of water while waiting in line ( 10 mins max)
I asked one of the SA's if it was worth me going to the Bellevue store and she asked around to other staff and came back saying it was much the same stuff. I even observed the use of the red phone. I was able to check out
    - the handbags (Edie,Brompton and Marceau) pretty pricey in my opinion
    - the jewelery (I will be returning some of my order)I liked the bubble necklace.. but wow it is substantial in red . The timex travellers watch.. well I found almost the exact same Timex watch at Target for $34.99 addtional straps to boot for $6.99I liked the flair double serge wool skirt (should have got it)The rest of the sale items were of no interest. the regular price stuff blouses ,sweaters ,coats, blazers and shoes were nice but $$ ouch ! The thing was seeing everything in person does really make a difference I really wanted to see the wool plaid, jade and jacguard capris. There were none in store.
I went to Madewell next door and felt old...Besides shoes or maybe a sweater I would probaby just skip this store ...I got the impression it is for teens and kind of hippie/boho/hand made item lovers .Just my impression...sorry. So on the way home I made a bee-line for the crewlet...not to be dissappointed good deals. I got a tissue turtlenecks $7 ( These seem the same as the B&M) two belts $9 each a scarf $8 jackie cardi $19 (cute colour)Kind of just had to get something... I am still loving J crew just more on the models than me. I still think a may get lucky with my delivery on thursday Thanks for listening. CAROLYN

  18. Jan - I too have the Matchstick cords in Lemon Gimlet and totally agree that the color was not what I was expecting. It's more of a fall yellow as opposed to the brighter yellow in the catalog or on my computer. I ended up keeping them and have been wearing mine with gray, navy, and white t-shirts and a denim jacket. Once I got over the color not being what I anticipated, I really liked them. And to get my brighter yellow fix, I just got the Toothpick jean in garment-dyed twill in Light Citron. Really cute!!

  19. Does anyone know where I can find some extra thread for the bright papaya cashmere ( 2 or 3 years ago)? My favorite cardigan has a hole in it and I can't find mine.

  20. I have to write a review about an amazing manager that helped me locate a stadium cloth coat in black/white. I went to 3 stores In NY/CT trying to find the coat in my size at the 3rd store they were not too busy to do an inventory search and called a store for me in either California or Texas the manager of that store Brandon or Brendan located the coat for me at $169 on sale he gave me the 30% off and wrote a note with the coat with his name and phone number on it giving me permission to return it if it doesn't fit regardless of the final sale promo going on. He then let me apply my teacher discount and gave me free 3 day shipping! With a fit card from Xmas the coat came down to $45!!!! Brandon/Brendan you are the man!!!!!
I just hope I like the coat as much as I like the service

  22. Leather-tipped bell skirt in black (50714). Sadly must return as it is too big. Maybe it was mis-marked? I ordered my bell skirt size (4) but I can lay my 2010 bell skirt on top of the leather-tipped and about inch of fabric shows on either side and also at the hem. I liked the fabric, general construction. Leather piping is silky soft and evenly top-stitched. The trim is actually leather-- fabric care reads: dry clean only with leather professional. I would have bothered with that if the skirt had fit.

Does anyone know if that skirt was always not tts or if it is still in stores? Thanks!

  23. Cotton V-neck sweater: Excited to try this on in the beautiful fuchsia color and even more excited that is it 100% cotton, but was disappointed as soon as I picked it up. The sweater is pretty thin and light weight, more so than I expected and the first one I picked up was already unraveling. I tried on a medium, a size up from my usual small shirt size. I will sometimes size up in sweaters. And sadly, the sweater was sheer around my bust area. Same issue I have with the vintage cotton shirts. UGH! I’m not one to layer, so my quest continues for a nice quality sweater..

Toothpick jean in neon persimmon: First, the color is misleading online since irl the color is pretty neon. Love this color for spring/summer though. These ended up looking awful on my petite curvy frame, but I can see these looking awesome on someone else. I loved the fabric, so soft! I can’t wait to try the blue ones on and hope more colors pop up for spring.

  24. TXgirl14, I come back from my store and they had just received the toothpicks in new colors including a bright green (much more like the green of the pants shown with the wildcat top in the stock pic that the warm jade of the cafe capris). A must have for me, I couldn't leave the store without them! I think they are going to fly off the shelves!
They had also received the blue grotto one and while very cute they are a little bit deja vu.

  25. Thanks Ema! I love that color green. My closet is full of plain dark jeans and I desperately want to add some colored jeans to the mix. Maybe 2012 is the year I finally branch out. :)

  26. I got the Petite Hutton Trouser in Purple and I must say that i am in love! The color is darker than the jazzy purple no.2 double serge wool pencil skirt. To me, it's a nice regal color, and will be a good substitute to navy. It fits true to size. It's lined and falls nicely. I'm only 5'2, and I don't intend to hem it. I can wear my 2-3 inch heels with these, but of course cannot wear them with flats.

I am excited to pair this with nude/blush, white, gray, turquoise, yellow, navy, and even orange!
