J.Crew's Red Card {it's white!}

As mentioned in last Monday's "J.Crew's Red Card {it's back!?!}" post, J.Crew is sending customers a card for 25% off any in-store purchase.

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including IRL, theWoolAcorn, & SanFranciscoCA, who sent in images of the card. The card came in a doubled-over-almost-postcard-size flyer. (Not in an envelope!)

Although the discount cards are being referred to as the "red card", they are white. (It's reference is due to the original 25% off card being sent a few years ago that was red.)

Some notes about the card:
  • It can be used multiple times until it expires on October 11, 2010. Don't let the store associate keep it (like one tried to do with mine on Saturday!)
  • It can also be used on regular and sale priced items
  • The card has a bar code on the back (seems like it could be unique to user)
  • The recipient has to sign the card on the back (so no one else can use it)
  • J.Crew will honor the discount when using the red phone in-stores
I did get a red card on Friday of last week. I thought for sure I would not get it. So I was thrilled when I saw it in the mailbox. Customers are still receiving the card in the mail, so don't lose hope! :)

Are you thrilled to hear that the Red Card program is back at J.Crew? Did you get the Red Card from J.Crew recently? If so, please share! :)

  1. I got a Red Card and was so excited as I've never recieved any of the similar promotions before. I used it today to buy some cashmere. :)

I'm glad to hear that they will honor it on the red phone - there may be some shoes in my future, too. I'd love to have the gray flannel Tretorns...does anyone know if the 25% works on the non Jcrew stuff? (Tretorn, Timex, Redwing, etc)

Also, I was a little suprised that it worked on sale items too - I was traveling for work and got to hit up the Oakbrook store in chicago - BIG!

  4. For some reason I received 2 Red cards, so if anyone would like me to try and send them my extra one please email me at recheumuna@gmail.com and I will send it to the first person who gets in touch with me.

I am happy to know that I can use it for red phone orders because oftentimes they don't have my size in the store and then I would lose out using the discount.

FYI, I didn't have my card with me on Saturday when I made a purchase in the store but the SA had a code she used and said that the card is transferrable since they had received that code to use. Worth a shot anyway right?

  5. I'm thrilled that it is out and about. Hooray for J.Crew for offering a little incentive for shopping with them! I am NOT thrilled that I wasn't one chosen, but I don't need to be spending money anyway! I'll probably end up buying the items I want at lower prices than 25% off when they go to sale (in 2 weeks!)

  6. Congrats on getting a card, Alexis!

Still no card for me (at this point I've given up hope). I'm amused by the wording on the insert: "To our most loyal customers..." I remember when I was one of those "most loyal" customers. Ah, thems were the days!

So glad they're including you this time around! Enjoy the discounts! :)

  7. I've been reading conflicting reports...so the card will be applied to full price red phone orders?

  9. JenLynn,

The red card can be applied for full-price and sale items. However, there was still be shipping costs for sale items.

  10. I don't believe it can be used for Tretorn, Timex, etc... (says it cannot be used on third-party branded merchandise). I still can't believe I got one, but a friend of mine said she gets them all the time because she has a JCrew card. I don't have the card.

btw... I'm tickled pink to be named in this post... I was sooooo excited to have "scoop" - couldn't wait to email Alexis about the promo. Silly, right?

  11. I didn't think I was going to get one but lo and behold I checked my mailbox yesterday and there it was.

I need some new Jackie cardigans so I think I will use the card to stock up.

  12. I got one and I squealed. SO excited to use it.

  13. I'm so glad you got your Mickey card, Alexis. You truly deserve ALL the promos/gifts JC sends out.

I'm crabby this morning, since I have NOT received the card considering I received one back in Dec. '08 and I'm a JC silver card holder and drop over $500/quarter with them.

Gigi had a great discussion post in her blog regarding this issue and worth a read for any loyal JCAs.

As I've posted before, I will not be shopping from JC during this period *knowing* others in line are paying 25% *less* than I am. I am also abstaining from the website and it's been working out great. Happy shopping for those who find great deals. Also, I agree with Appgal, I will pick my wanted items *after* they are marked down. If it's out of stock I will wait for the next pretty thing. :-)

  14. When I tried to use my red card this past Friday, the SA asked for my J Crew card and was very specific in matching my information on J Crew card against the red card. I was even asked to produce a photo ID. So I was under the impression that these cards are tied to specific users and also that they are available only the J Crew cardholders. But seems like other JCAs who aren't cardholders have gotten the red card. Not sure what the fuss was about.

  15. I got one of these cards in the mail. I don't have a J Crew cc. I know why I got it: because I buy very little at J Crew and I used to buy a lot. I bought one item a month ago, but nothing all summer. I appreciate the coupon, but I don't know what I'll use it on because I'm not yearning for anything...that's a bad sign.

  17. Alexis, congratulations! And thanx, jcrewphd for reminding me to check out Gigi's thread on the mysterious red/white card. V. interesting, v. frank and open, and many thanks to Gigi for the forum. Only sorry I got there too late to add my voice, so I am adding it here.

I not only have lifestyle and budget issues when I shop, I have real estate issues. I love my apartment but short of closing in a terrace there is no way to add closet space. And I am in a landmarked building so exterior changes will not happen. So I am staring at my red card because I have no idea why I got it, don't want to use it on stuff I don't want/love/need, and yet, and yet….

I get store surveys from Neiman's, Bergdorf's, Bloomingdales, Saks, as well as Macy's. I feel they're a nice way to stay in touch with clientele, not at all déclassé. I get points and rewards and surprises and F&F from all of the foregoing too. And nice surprises like discounts & free shipping & F&F from Ralph Lauren. Again, not at all déclassé. I would love to see some of that from JC.

    Meanwhile, enjoy the cards!

  18. Alexis just want to chime in and congratulate you on getting the red/white card! Up here in Canada there's no chance in H-E-double hockey sticks that I'm getting a card, and not hoping for a % off in my catalog (it's always late anyway). Not bitter about it either, as I know JC knows I'm a FS stalker. Won't be doing any more JC shopping till Christmas/New Years, when I know there will be a ton of stuff to choose from, just like last year. As someone here points out, there are bound to be more pretties in the upcoming roll outs. To all you ladies who got a card, have fun with it!

  19. I got my red card last week on Thursday (west coast). My husband has already put it to good use!

There's nothing in the store I want right now, so I haven't bought anything, but I'm encouraged by being able to use it over the red phone. I may place on order now.

    I love these promotions!

  20. I think Emily is on to something. I got a Red Card even though I don't have a J. Crew credit card. I used to buy quite a bit at J. Crew, but recently, I've bought only a tank top. Since I'm an adult, I need adult clothes and therefore have been looking elsewhere. Oh well....

  21. I'm thrilled to have received one, but I would be extremely mad if I hadn't. It seems their method is a bit random and that has me shaking my head. I think the loyal customers should be rewarded with their promos no matter what. I am not a card holder, but I spend a lot of money there (online and in store) every month. I am so excited that I can use it on sale items as well.

I did not know we could use it on red phone orders either! That opens up a whole new world for me :)

  22. No card for me still. :( Maybe I've spent to much lately, lol!

Hoping one finds it's way to me . . .but if not, my wallet thanks me!

  23. Thanks everyone! I am really happy I got the card too.

As for those who are still waiting for one & are upset... I totally get it! I too was sad/ upset last week when I kept checking the mailbox to find nothing. I was also convinced I wouldn't get one because so many on the east coast already got theirs too.

I honestly think J.Crew is sending them out in batches. So there is still some hope that you might get one. :)

  24. Alexis, I am so happy you got your card. No one deserves it more! Hope you're right about there still being hope. Every evening, I go to the mailbox and wonder if the mailer will be there. So far, nothing. Maybe today will be the day!

  25. I didn't get a "red (white) card" but was not disappointed since I don't live within 2 hours of ANY J Crew store. I got the "red card" a few years ago, and ended up throwing it away as it was of no use to me. I have no choice but to do all my ordering online. Blah.

  26. I'm sorry--can someone tell me what the red phone is? I have seen those phones in the stores but have only used them when I am returning/exchanging something I purchased online and I thought the red card couldn't be used for online purchases? Does this mean I can order something that's catalog only and use the red card?? (please, please, please)

    ReplyDelete
  27. SO happy for you, Alexis, that you got one! I have shared my views, so I'll just skip that part :)

Word to the wise: each store does have a list of customers who received the (apparently random) promo. It appears to be an effective at getting people in to buy, just based on what I observed in the store and all the JCAs who've commented on their purchases.

O/T, the rollout for this week is a small one and it's already online.

    ReplyDelete
  28. pastystone: yes, the red phone is used to order merchandise that either your store doesn't carry or has sold out of, which would include online/catalog-only items. For full-price items, shipping from the red phone is free!

  29. Carnivore girl, how interesting that the SA was so hell bent on confirming your identity. I used my card in the store today and the SA just asked that I signed the back of it. I don't have a JC credit card. After I was finished at the register, a different SA helped me place an order for something on the red phone and they honored my Red/White Card without even asking for the barcode number on the back.

I wish JC would get their act together a little bit and start enforcing policies (and sending out promos) a little more uniformly!

  30. Good news! Thanks, AppGal! Bonbon coat, here I come!

  31. I haven't received the card yet and I've watched as the Dark Pewter Crosstown Peeptoe Shoes in my size disappeared in one day. It's fine if it shows up and it's fine if it doesn't. The irritation is done and since I buy so much, I can't help but think this has become a "good customer penalty" which can be easily remedied. I'm really happy that Alexis and so many others got the card though, especially Alexis since it's long overdue!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Do you have to have a J.crew credit card to recieve the red card??

    ReplyDelete
  33. FYI....if you're still wondering whether you will receive a white/red card, call your local JC store where you normally shop. They have a list of all the local customers who were supposed to receive a card. At least you can get the suspense of checking that mailbox daily over with. The first time the red card was offered I didn't receive it in the mail, but the manager asked me why I didn't use my card. Only then did I learn he knew who was supposed to receive them locally. Hmm, makes me wonder if the stores themselves submit a list of clients they would like to have the card sent to. I didn't receive one this time around. I've bought more from the website over the last year and little from the store so who knows.

  34. The store might have a list with my name on it that they got from JCrew online but no one and I mean no one knows me in my local store. I have no PS there and the last thing I bought was on Mother's Day and one other time last Christmas! Newer to the area and rarely (as you can see by my store purchases:) make it to a store. The other few times I have gone I did not buy; just looked around a bit.

  35. @Elizabeth: So true about "good customer penalty."

@Tara: I'm a JCrew Silver card holder and I didn't get it this time nor last year. As with Gigi, I am going to cancel it sometime soon and just use my Amex.

  36. I'm w/ Genny, no one knows me at my store. I got a card and I did buy some items but typically I shop exclusively online. My husband thought that the cards might go out in a higher volume to areas where store sales are lacking. After shopping with JC for so long, it was very nice to get the card. And I'm even more excited at hearing that we can use it on red phone purchases.

  37. I was completely shocked to see that I received a card! I received it a couple of days ago... I have not shopped at J. Crew for a couple of months, despite the constant % off promotions. When I did shop, I only purchased sale items, and returned 40 to 50 percent of what I purchased (since my size is only available online, and I cannot try on in store)

Someone stated that the stores may have a list of customers who are supposed to receive the coupon. I never shop in the store (maybe twice a year), but the last time I went in, I had an absolutely horrible experience. I sent a customer complaint to the j.crew online, and got a response from the local regional manager. She emailed me then gave me a personal call to get a better understanding of the situation. She completely apologized for the whole thing.

This may be why I was deemed worthy to get one... maybe I was put on the list to get me to come back to the store.

  38. I received this card and bought two things using it. I don't think I will keep any of my items...perhaps I bought on impulse. Either way, make sure you save your receipts, as the policy has changed!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think boycotting J.Crew because you feel snubbed is silly. I would bet that J.Crew does not bother to hire someone to sit in their office and think, "Hmm...I think this time, I'm not going to send Jane a discount card."

I'm surprised to see so many grown ladies on here acting as if this were pre-school. So you didn't get the card, this is not the end of days. I do not believe a boycott will change the situation or rectify the situation in the future.

It might make you feel better, like you've shown J.Crew what's up. If that's the case, go ahead and do what makes you feel best.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If you think I'm going to pay 25% more than everyone else standing in line you're silly. Why would I do that? Why would anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  41. When you buy things at full price, do you refuse to purchase if there's a teacher in line who's going to be buying the same item for 15% less?

    Doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I do not compare this promo to what teachers do for my children or for this country. There is no comparison.

I do pay full price and I buy a lot. If they do not appreciate my business then there is no point in rewarding them with full priced purchases.

The teachers of this country receiving a discount is not something I begrudge. I applaud it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. DinoSupremo, it may appear to be a childish thing to not shop a retailer because of a perceived or real snub. I respectfully disagree. The lingo on the white card includes "for our most loyal." Yet the card is supposed to be random. I feel each and every cardholder should have received the discount. And I'm not a cardholder.

This week JC has a rolling online promo. If you're not aware, different codes are popping up. Some ppl see a code for 20% off + fs on $100 or more. I have tried multiple browsers and each showed a code for 20% off + fs on $175 or more. I think there are 4 codes in all. It's their choice if they want to have different tiers, but it's folly given that all of this is shared on the Internet. Perhaps JC is doing some market testing, but in the process they are creating a climate of confusion and mistrust. None of this is too smart in our post Enron (& other offenders) economy.

  44. This is so exiting I hope that I get one too! I am in college now and there is not a J.Crew very close to me, but I am willing to make the 45-minute drive to go see what I can indulge in. This is especially exciting because I love J.Crew’s fall line every year, maybe that is just because fall is my favorite season. But I love to bundle up and layering is always nice. Also I seem to think that everyone looks slimmer in fall clothing compared to the quite skimpy summer clothing, which is next to nothing shorts and barely there tank tops. I just don’t feel as comfortable in that seasons clothing which is probably another reason why I welcome fall with wide-open arms! I’m sure that I will be needing a new winter coat soon!

  45. I am hoping to buy a coat and other goodies this weekend, but I did not get the red card! It is SO silly to spend the extra 25% when you don't have to....I am in the NYC area is there any kind red card holder out there who is done with theirs and might share theirs?? Even if just for a quick trip? Thanks!!
