J.Crew is really sending out the coupon codes (with $100/$150 minimums) lately!

I just got an email from J.Crew offering free shipping on orders of $1o0+ with promo code SEASHELL. This offer expires 6/11/08. (By the way, thanks to Laura Kateri for pointing that code out as well in another post.)

Marisa let us know in the "Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon" post of earlier today, that J.Crew offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code OCEAN. This offer expires 6/11/08. (Thanks Marisa and to the others posting about that code!)

UPDATE: "Anonymous at 1:54 PM" in this post let us know that J.Crew is offering free shipping with code CANADA on orders $150+. This offer also expires 6/11/08.

Scarves: Do you love them or LOVE them!

I have so many scarves from J.Crew that I could probably open my own little store with them. I find they are versatile accessories. They can be worn with almost any outfit and they can be worn in so many different ways. I typically favor wrapping a scarf around my tote. But I have worn scarves around my neck and even as a headband. I have even seen people wear a scarf around their waist.

My most recent scarf purchase is the Large printed-silk twill scarf (Item 88140) in Sand (shown in the middle of the image above). I was able to purchase this find for just $14 at a J.Crew (thanks to the additional accessories sale and student discount.) It is absolutely beautiful and the size is perfect: large enough to use as a headband, small enough to use around my neck without too much fabric.

How do you like to wear you J.Crew scarfs? What is your favorite/least favorite scarf from J.Crew? What size do you tend to prefer scarves in: small, medium, or large square? large rectangle (for example the Python print silk scarf [Item 92759] at 59 3/4"L x 16"W)?

J Crew cuts year earnings outlook, shares drop 15 pct

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - J Crew Group Inc (JCG.N: Quote, Profile, Research) cut its full-year earnings outlook on Thursday, and its shares fell 15 percent as the high-flying retailer showed it was not immune to weak U.S. consumer spending.The upscale clothing company headed by Wall Street darling and former GAP Inc CEO Mickey Drexler also posted disappointing same-store sales for the first quarter. "Clearly there are traffic challenges around America and clearly we are all sharing the same challenges and struggles. I think the whole retail industry is," Drexler told analysts on a conference call.

J Crew, which sells its fashions for women, men, and children in its stores, a catalog and on the Internet, said same-store sales for the remainder of fiscal 2008 would be flat or would rise only in the low-single digits. In the first quarter, it posted a mere 2 percent rise in same-store sales, compared to 8 percent a year earlier."The fear is that trend of slowing will continue," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Richard Jaffe, who has a "hold" rating on shares.

Drexler, who has led the company to earnings and sales growth in his five years at the helm, revitalizing the merchandise and image of the preppy J Crew brand, assured analysts that the company was planning conservatively. Consumers were not balking at paying J Crew's higher prices, he said. But he acknowledged that the weakening U.S. economy would affect the company's projected results. Jaffe said J Crew's first-quarter and projected results were not just negatively affected by lower consumer spending, but by cold spring weather and the company's prior success."He's a great success, a phenomenal success," Jaffe said of Drexler. "At some point, having phenomenal success on top of phenomenal success makes it tougher to do better the next year."

In the first quarter, the company beat analysts' earnings expectations by a penny per share, posting a 24 percent rise in net income to $30.5 million, or 48 cents per share, from $24.6 million, or 39 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales rose 15 percent in the quarter to $340.6 million, driven by stores sales growth of 14 percent and Internet and catalog sales growth of 17 percent.

For the full year, the company said it now expects per share earnings between $1.70 to $1.75, down from an earlier range of $1.85 to $1.87 a share. For the second quarter, it said it expects earnings between 31 cents to 33 cents per share. Wall Street, on average, had been expecting full-year earnings per share of $1.86 and second-quarter earnings of 40 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Peppered with questions by analysts about the outlook, Drexler said it was virtually impossible to predict. "This is all a forecast. America in the last six months pretty much gets an F on forecasting in most sectors of America," Drexler said. "Understand this is not a science, we are here as responsible shareholders of a company to manage the business with the utmost of prudence and conservative ways." Drexler told analysts not to underestimate his Internet business, especially given high gasoline prices that force many American consumers to shop online rather than drive to stores.

Shares of J Crew fell as low as 17 percent in after-hours trade before settling down 15 percent to $39.65 after closing on the New York Stock Exchange at $46.91.

Shoe of the Month: THE gift for the shoe obsessed

I am sure most of you who received J.Crew's 2007 gift catalog, noticed something very special in the pages... Touted as "a gift for the shoe obsessed," J.Crew was offering customers (for the low price of $1,800!) to have their designers handpick their favorite shoes to be sent to members each month. (Also known as a "shoe of the month" club.)

Although I love the idea of being a member of this exclusive offering, it was (read as: still is) waaaaay out of my price range.

Despite not being able to participate, I am still curious about how the gift works. Luckily for us, a visitor to this site is a member and shared her experience in the June 4th "Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?" post. I felt her comments needed its own dedicated post, in the hopes of sharing that valuable insight with others.

A big special "thank you!" goes to "Anonymous from June 6, 2008 at 11:07AM," also known as "sf to ny",who shared with us her impressions of J.Crew's Shoe of the month experience. The following italicized text is a direct quote of her comment:

The shoe of the month club....I have mixed reviews. I think (not exactly sure since it was a gift) that it was about $2,000 or so to join, so I was expecting some great shoes. You have the option of choosing between either flats or heels or alternating your selection. I chose heels only. Here is a list of what I have received:

1st shoe - Linen peep-toe Maryjanes in yellow
2nd shoe - Martine satin heel in Royal Purple
3rd shoe - Patent leather Maryjane in black*

*I returned this heel because I think Patent Leather Maryjanes are ugly, and I was disappointed that I had received 2 of the same style shoe within 3 months of each other. This was very problematic because you are not allowed to return any shoes from the shoe-of-the-month club. Luckily, I was finally able to cajole them into allowing it, and I ended up getting the GORGEOUS Becky jewelled heel in its place.

Overall, the shoe club has been fun...it's nice to receive a surprise box of shoes every month, but the membership was definitely marketed as a more exclusive club, i.e., members would be getting shoes that may not be available to regular customers, or designer selected shoes, etc. That is not really the case. It seems that the most popular shoe, chosen by the marketing team in NY, and priced around $150 is sent. When my husband bought my membership, they told him that he was 1 of only about 150 people who had signed up. I don't know if that is still the case but I would figure that if the membership was a small number, then the shoes would be mainly from the J.Crew Collection line, rather than the everyday ones.

I will let you know what I receive for June!

More or Less: Shopping In Stores

As we all know, J.Crew no longer offers their "free shipping with no minimum amount" coupon codes. Despite not seeing one of those codes for over 2 months, I still miss them. {sniffle}

I have written throughout this blog about how I have shopped at J.Crew's online store a lot less in direct response to the removal of those codes. After reading many of the comments, many of you have done the same.

However, I have noticed I am frequenting different J.Crew's in my area a lot more. (Especially in the hopes of coming across an "additional percent off sale items" sale.) Not only am I visiting the brick & mortar stores more often, but I have been purchasing more at the stores than before. I realize, that this is probably because I don't pay shipping costs at the store (obviously) so I justify my purchase as "saving the shipping fee".

Have you been visiting J.Crew stores more in the past couple of months? Have you been buying more from the stores compared to previous months? Are you starting to favor the stores more than online because of the coupon code situation?
