J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Saw sale section updated before 5:00am, but for most updates, i couldn't add them to shopping cart even when it shows there are five available.

  2. Same here! Nothing really adds to cart! But some of the missing items form yesterday are back. But anything ending in .50 no additional sale. Have a good day all!!!

  3. Thank you to JCrew and their dysfunctional website for saving my money. Whatever I can add to cart that even clearly has “extra 60 percent off” under it is not showing a discount, and most of what I try to add to cart won’t…
I’m contemplating the mariner cloth striped puff sleeve top AY455 but prob won’t pull the trigger right now.

  4. Another major fail today with website issues and newly launched items. when I was told it would be small that was an understatement at least so far. The new Ratti Compass print is now showing a halter top and no blouse. Overpriced looks almost transparent to me. I like halters but I use some of my large vintage Jcrew and Hermes scarves to make my own. Far more beautiful and they make a striking statement. For those who haven’t tried it go to Hermes.com and on their landing you will be able to view ideas as to what to do with any beautiful scarf.

  5. Lynn,
I saw a salesperson at Nordstrom's years ago who had done the same thing with her Hermes scarves. She showed me the "loop thing" or whatever it was under her jacket that turned it into a halter. It was such a great, distinctive look. I tend to find the large scarves like Hermes sells too overwhelming for around my narrow shoulders, but I loved the halter look.

    1. Hello Mary, Sorry the scarves don’t work for you. I have narrow shoulders as well but I’m fairly tall and a 34D so fortunately I fill them out. I remember years ago when I started purchasing scarves and a salesperson over here showed me what I could do with a scarf and from then on I became hooked. I too, wear them as a halter under blazers with a simple pair of earrings and bracelet. It’s always been a nice business look and the compliments arrive with it. Hope all is well with you. Nice to see ou again here.

    2. Yes, Lynn, all is well here, though it's the dog days of N.C. With your height, those longer scarves would look great around your neck and shoulders too. At 5'4", with a short waist and narrow shoulders, I think I rock a mean French girl style neckerchief. I could probably do the halter under a blazer. I had forgotten the look until I read your post. Hope you're well. Thanks for the inspiration.

  6. I see the Lg Carryall leather totes are back to $30 after 60% off w/FS, for the ones that end in $.99. I saw that someone reported that CS asked for a picture of the price...??? CS went a little too far on that one!

    1. Not anymore! Mine went back up to full price as did most of my cart. Prices are changing back and forth each time I look!

    2. yup - I had the red one in my cart - discount showed it down to $30, was still debating and now when I check my cart again 2/3 of the items have gone up to full price. Was also looking at the flat espadrilles and those are also FP and showing final sale. Guess I don't really "need" anyting!

    3. Had to run a few errands and left my cart for about 2 hours. MISTAKE! My PJs went back up to full price. Maybe it is a 12:00pm pricing game that JC wants us to play to stay engaged. UGH...PJs off the list until the next time

    4. I was thinking they would be nice for my girls for Christmas. I was just thinking I’d fill them with undies and pajamas. Last year I did that with longchamp duffels which they really liked. I’ll keep my eyes on them and be ready to pounce.

  7. Only got 2 things yesterday: a swim bottom ($20) and one of the linen button back shifts ($35). Was thinking I could use the shift for a swim cover up. Didn't read enough of the reviews and now see it runs really big (ordered in my usual tall M), and also people saying it is not nearly as nice as ones from previous Summer. will have to see. Final Sale strikes again.

  8. Here’s a philosophical question for the JCAs. With the lack of price adjustments and things becoming final sale fairly quickly, less inventory in stores, will you order things to try on and return?
I try to wait to buy until it’s a price I want to pay but there are so many things I never get to try that might be great.
    Just curious.

    1. When I had a local store to go to, I would order things to try and then return. I haven’t ordered any pants at all the entire time I’ve been WFH (since mid-March 2020) because the only store I have to return to is in the city and I haven’t commuted at all since the office shut down. I only order things I know will fit and will take a chance on really inexpensive tees and accessories. Agree that we are probably missing out on hidden gems but can’t see wasting money on final sale as I’ve been burned too many times. It’s not just J Crew that I have issues with re: lacking a brick & mortar to bring returns to. Ann Taylor & Banana Republic both closed in the local mall.

    2. The closest store to me is in Richmond, VA (two hours away). I do go over to that area for other reasons now and then, but it certainly isn't convenient for frequent returns. One big problem with final sale is inconsistencies in fit. Example: I have on many occasions purchased something I really liked in one color and decided that I wanted another color. That fit can be completely different. It doesn't even have to be a different color. I once tried on every pair of 00 pants in every color when I was in Richmond, and some were too big while others too small.

Of course, it isn't just J.Crew. It's just one of the things about mass manufacturing.

I had so many problems with returning things by mail that I don't want to do that too often either. This shopping bit can take up way too much time and energy (and money too, of course).

    3. I am definitely more judicious about what I'm trying and ordering. My latest closet organization/purge produced several tags on final sale items that didn't work out and I didn't try to return. My store is usually pretty good about taking things back though, usually for credit which I'm ok with but I'm definitely not ordering multiple sizes on FP things. I was thinking the other day I miss when you could find older popbacks in the sale section, those days seem to be behind us.

    4. I should clarify. I meant will you buy new arrivals or before things hit final sale, knowing it’s a try on, return and then buy at end of season or when it’s final sale?

  9. Things are becoming final sale too quickly sometimes, and agree with above comments re: problems with sizing inconsistencies - even across colors of same item, etc. My nearest store *was* East Lansing, MI (closed) and I only used to go maybe once a year (80 miles one way). I've always returned by mail and did not mind so much when it was $5, now it's $7.50 and I try not to think how much $ is wasted each year on sending in my returns. They really REALLY should offer free shipping/returns for cardmembers as so many other retailers do. Or offer free returns if you spend a certain amount each year, or heck, I'd even pay a flat $50 a year to be in a special JC club that gets free returns and other perks. Without fewer and fewer stores to try things on/see things in person, it's frustrating.

  10. I will purchase new arrivals if there’s something extraordinary looking and if necessary buy in multiples because of crazy sizing issues and/or quality. I will wait awhile if I have something I like and then do my own calculations for pricing. If it works it works and if not itemes are sent back. These days there’s basically nothing out there that’s really captured my attention. What I’ve purchased recently was deeply discounted and someone nice even gave me price adjustments. I’m frustrated as the rest of you here. I don’t even mind paying more without a large discount if something is beautiful and I exotic and a limited edition. Those days are gone though. My biggest gripe however is the lack of quality and creativity.

    1. Lynn, I so agree with you. If something is truly lovely and great quality, I'm okay about full price if I think it's worth it. The thing that bothers me these days about full price with J.Crew and so many others is that the "starting price" seems based on the fact that there is a planned promotion.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. I have paid full price at everlane and although they’re not fancy they are some of my favorite closet staples.

      Delete
    3. Meant to add, their regular price is typically 40-50 percent off JCrew starting retail price.

      Delete
    4. @MmeJacqueline, you are correct and their algorithms are hard at work 24/7. Therefore the prices fluctuate. It appears we’re almost playing he numbers on the stock market.

    5. I agree with all of this. Once upon a time I used to want the entire rollout and would have to decide what I could keep, return some things reluctantly and hope that I could find them on popback. Not so much. And also agreed re: notes below about staff - my long time SA is still at my store as are a few others and they're the reason I continue to shop at my local store. It makes a difference!

    1. Yes they were and I purchased many more items back then and before then. One item that xmcomes to mind is the checked featherweight cashmere cardigan with the neon orchid sleeveless shell. Of course the green and navy combo. I put both items up for sale on eBay a few years ago which were fairly priced and I never had any takers. One set I never wore and still had the tags. Needless to say I decided to wear it, take care of it and it still looks like new. Actually both of them do. How I miss the old Jcrew.

    2. I’ve held on to my featherweights, too!

Hmmm, it’s been a long goodbye.

    3. @WFF, read the article and then the article about how LV is now targeting “rich teens”. Over here I see girls 13 and up wearing so many expensive clothes which makes me ill. If I had a daughter there’s is no way I would spend absurd amounts of money simply to keep up with er….the Abramovich’s here or anywhere else for that matter. She would get a good education, a job and find a way to pay for them on her own. Just like I did. Just my own personal thoughts. Jcrew Who??

  12. Forgot to mention I stopped by today while I had some errands at the mall. Sale section had some more tops and tees and some sandals and espadrilles. I tried on the two strap leather sandals that look like Dr Scholls with an extra strap (and studs) and found them uncomfortable. I also tried on the puffy ish sandal that was on sale this morning. Also not a great fit for me.

I looked through the store and there were some newer linen pieces but nothing I had to try. I overheard a customer ask the associate at the register when new items would be out and he had no idea. He said “I assume we will get new stuff soon,” or something to the effect that made me think this is not something discussed at store meetings.

The associates are so pleasant I wanted to buy something just because but there really wasn’t a thing in store I wanted.

  13. @Suz, the store managers know what’s coming in even before the Stylists do. Most of the time I will call Boston and the manger is aware of every single item that will be coming in. She warned this would be a small launch which of course we all saw today.

    1. I figured the manager would know—I just think as a client it’s helpful for employees to be knowledgeable, or at least act like they are. Or ask the manager for the info.

    2. @Suz, absolutely. Simply put no one cares at many stores. Sad.

    3. @Suz, my post below shows some new info. This came from a store manager I deal with.

  14. A few months ago I ordered the Cyprus sandals in metallic gold leather, and this month I finally pulled them out of the box to wear. That was the beginning of July. Today, less than two weeks later while I was out walking in my neighborhood, one strap of one sandal just came unglued??? in midstep. I wore these maybe a handful of times on short walks, never in the heat or during rain or through puddles. Thank goodness I was close to home so I hobbled back with one broken sandal. They were only $10 on whatever sale I got them during, but eesh… remember when JCrew leather shoes were actually quality? I can’t believe the straps were glued on - not stitched.

  15. @eeps, oh gosh hope you didn’t hurt yourself! As we’ve posted here the quality of Jcrew’s shoes and sandals have deteriorated. A shame. Their beautiful well made items are simply a fading memory. I hope you notified the company of your mishap. Hope all is well with you.

    1. Lynn, I’m well, hope you’re enjoying the summer. I have given up on notifying the company of their shoddy products. The fact that the quality continues to decline shows they are not interested in improving and they see these situations as part of the cost of business. I will keep that in mind next time there’s a sale and stop buying JC shoes no matter how inexpensive after promos. Must remember: quality, not quantity.

      Delete
    2. Wow! Sounds awful! Yes quality is key! I love the Tory shoes for comfort! But they are super expensive and the leather is like paper! They get scuff in no time. You should do chat and try to return them. Tell them you could of gotten hurt. Insane …. Lol

I also had trouble with bunch items yesterday and same today. But need nothing

Heading to the store for returns! Only few final sale rest are not so will see how it goes

Yes I am much more cautious in bying final sale as returns are very difficult! I know it’s been going on for a while but I just started having trouble in my store last month honestly so I have been lucky.

    3. @eeps, Thank you very much for asking, all is well here back and forth between Sicily. The 1€ house is nearly finished and wearing sneakers, sneakers, sneakers 90% of the time even when conducting business.

  16. Since there is no place for today’s JCA’s reviews I will post here. News flash Jcrew is relaunching their featherweight cashmere line within a month or two. Next Friday the managers in stores will receive details on the Autumn launch too. Have a nice evening everyone. Now back to quality issues…..
