J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. AY540 Cottage Dress in Liberty Annelise Floral $188.00 meet our new favorite house dress. Got to be kidding. Absurd. House dress? Who are on earth is in charge of copywriting?? Fire everyone connected. As for the other items listed so far company is going from bad to worse with their morbid, boring designs in my humble opinion.

    1. Agree. Boring is the right word.

    2. Couldn’t even figure out what new! Everything is blend and big and very expensive! I want 2 liberty tops and they are still tooo much!! C lassic-fit short puff-sleeve top in Liberty® Patchwork Dream floral
Item AY706 and c lassic-fit popover shirt in Liberty® Mauvey floral Item AY655. Where is the decent percent off! 50-60. It’s a joke but they not even eligible for 30 off! Insane! Not buying anything

    3. This must be the “smocking” rollout? I see smocked everything, boring ballet flats, more matched sets, chinos, and the same muted colors. I’ll look more closely but not much is calling to me in this rollout.

    4. I find the offerings dull and rather depressing. Even though I'm not shopping right now, there is nothing I would buy. The shoes are very disappointing and seem to get worse with each passing season. Still loving my Italian Kiki ballet flats and great colors.

    5. Boring is exactly what it is. Loved the Chhris Benz designs, sad he left! So disappointed in this new roll out

    6. @MmJacqueline, ditto on the Kiki and even Cece’s. I’ve posted many times that I purchased duplicates and even triplicates of these because they were well made at the time, had beautiful colors and comfortable. Sadly I don’t see those standards returning.

    7. Wow! It’s not even the lack of color/prints for me….it’s the shapes and styles If you don’t like smocking, square necks or spaghetti straps you are mostly out of luck. It all seems so utilitarian and I feel like it’s trending to a young demographic with a certain body type (small bust). I don’t see a single “pretty” item…that would make me feel fabulous when I put it on.

    8. @Lynn, I’m glad to see you posting! I hope that you’re doing well.

Agree with all the comments above. Def doesn’t look very JCrew with the blah colours and lack of nice prints. Last year I bought the lobster dress, lobster sweater, Ratti regatta pants etc which at least felt like jcrew. I was really hoping they’d release some madras and some beautiful prints, I guess I’m just missing some basic preppy summer items.

    9. Came by to say how boring the rollout is, and wow it's universal. I had to toss a pair of well-used sandals last week and went digging in my shoe closet for the piles of unworn, NIB shoes I have. Unearthed 3-4 pairs of JC sandals of yesteryear still in their boxes, and I am so grateful I bought too much back in those days when I actually liked the styles and they were a steal during sales. Because it looks like I'm not buying anything new this summer!

    10. @jan, hi Jan hope all is well with you. Get ready to pull out the lobster dress and regatta items again. Well worth wearing. I’ve been wearing mine including the lobster cashmere sweater, lobster cardigan zip up and they always draw smiles. Oh the blouse too. I’m grateful I purchased 2 of the lobster cashmere sweaters when they were $27.00 so at least I’m covered with a fun theme. No fun themed items, a shame. No shopping for me except if Shopping Celle puts up some positive feedback and those Ratti print pants that have been around for awhile. A shame with this launch.

    11. What I find interesting about these cottage dresses is that they are pretty much guaranteed to flatter no one. If you have what the French would call a nice enough décolletage to look good in a low, square neck, you're probably not going to look good in the relatively straight, shapeless skirts. Your hips will probably need something fuller in the skirt to balance your top half. If I can see this, and I'm not a designer, why can't they? I see this style everywhere this summer on websites, but I've yet to see it on a real person.

    12. @Kate - I was also unable to determine which items were new.

    13. Mary G, “guaranteed to flatter no one” is SPOT ON.

First of all, I had to look up “cottage dress”band found:

Why Cottagecore and Prairie Dressing Are Fashion's Biggest Trends in 2020. People are flocking to the aesthetic as a safe form of escape. ... According to the Urban Dictionary, the exact definition of cottagecore is: “A niche aesthetic based around the visual culture of an idealized life on a Western farm.May 8, 2020

I truly never pictured JC’s customer base (including me!) as wanting to dress for the idealized life on a Western farm.

    14. I'm fine with cottagecore but let those brands that specialize in it do it. I want J.crew to be, well, J.crew! If I hadn't bloated up in size over the years I would've kept more of my early 2000s clothing. I still own a white linen A-line dress that I love and wear to this day, which I purchased 10-15 years ago when I was in college. If it ever stops being white I swear I will dye it to reuse it. It's the perfect white linen dress for picnics or strolling down the street. I feel like Charlotte from SATC in it. Preppy, feminine, chic!

I actually do appreciate cottagecore or prairie dresses but I don't want EVERY freaking business to follow the trend. What happened to brands having their own individual style? It used to be that BR, Gap, J.crew, etc. looked different from one another. Similar enough because, let's face it, they took their cues from the runway, but you knew a piece was Gap or BR or J.crew just by looking at it. Now, I can't tell if it's J.crew or Everlane. WTF. Same-same-same-ness. Yuck.

  2. So there are no takers for the AY540 house dress😂 I still can’t believe the lack of bright colors which Jcrew is known for. Read the details on the Fake Cece ballet flat with the new name. Canvas interior. Oh no.

    1. The dress wasn’t coming up by style number, but what’s bizarre description. We will be wearing it in bed and out of bed? We can’t even change our clothes anymore?

    2. Weren’t house dressers what women wore to clean house and do laundry back in the 1950s? I recall my mother wearing old, faded cotton dresses that she didn’t care about getting dirty.

    3. Sorry AY640. Was laughing so much I was distracted as I was typing the item number

  4. @liztriden, Hi Liz pull out your great vintage pieces and to others here wear them! I imagine these vintage pieces we own are going to be more valuable as real estate prices have soared😂 Hope all is well with you.

    1. What doesn’t have prairie flowers, or ruffles, or peplum, or smocking, or washed out colors, or or or… I’m with you Lynn - what’s “old” will become “new” again in this current release state.

  5. I had hoped the women would get a shirt or scarf in the Sea Blossoms Liberty print but that hasn't happened. I believe they did release some bathing suits. The men have a nice shirt in this print (AU638) plus a pocket square and tie. I also like their shirt(AU737) in Wiktor multi colors. I wonder if I could wear AU638. I've bought a few long sleeve men's shirts for myself before. Since I'm almost six feet tall, the sleeves are a nice length.

  6. Granted I have a very limited color palette but most of what I see would just wash me out. And agree with the post above about Liberty scarves or bandanas. I like the prints in small doses.
I did like seeing the long skinny scarf styled a little differently. I never know how to deal with those and have a bunch.
I looked at a few things but really nothing saved. Nothing memorable.

    1. Same here @Suz, most of the light colours and khaki wash me out. I’m just so surprised at the lack of bright colours or prints for summer. I kind of understood those colours for spring but summer looks the same from them.

  7. Wow! I am checking out the new arrivals while scarfing down a bagel! I am again a bit disappointed in their color selection. Don’t they realize after a year of sitting home that we would want fun bright pretty colors as we re-enter social life! This looks like a early fall collection with the muted colors. They were only a few items that caught my eye. I liked the Pull-on pant in Ratti® midnight paisley
Item AY886 and the matching shirt and the Zoe Suede Ballet mules in slate green. I need to go to the store to use some rewards and check out the new pieces.

    1. Exactly Shopping Celle, at least for myself I feel that offerings that give a sense of celebration or optimism would be called for this summer. I’m not at all tempted to buy such blah items, def prefer my older clothes from JCrew.

  8. @Shopping Celle, would appreciate your feedback on the Ratti pants. You always put up great reviews so counting on you from afar. Happy scouting.

  9. This is a half review and half vent. I purchased the medium sized Montauk tote in natural desert. It's sturdy and a good size for carrying groceries. I was hoping they would release a strap for the tote in the same color for new arrivals today. Alas, they didn't. They released the strap in the blue and green colors, but why not the natural desert color? I would gladly purchase a strap for it--if only they would make it in that color.

  10. hello and welcome back, JCA friends! I finally decided that the item I’d been stalking had reached its low point - this would be the green raincoat marked down by 41% - and I ordered it in a Tall, because I like to keep my knees dry, which leads me to my Points Of Vent:

    1> rain jackets. Why?

2> synthetic fabrics. I don’t eat anything I can’t pronounce or translate, I don’t drink anything I haven’t seen poured, and somehow there’s a parallel waiting for a brilliant writer to explain why I have to ask a Particle Physicist to explain the fabric of this raincoat. which I am keeping, because I love the green color, the collar, the hood - but the feel of the fabric is reminding me of the sad and worried people in tinfoil hats who used to stalk the financial district.

  11. Sorry everyone about the typo regarding the cottage house dress. It’s AY 640. Was laughing so hard about it got distracted😂 Got to be kidding about the price too. $188.00? Liberty prints appear to be quite popular in France at the moment and tor the price of one of the crew’s you could purchase 4 with much prettier more vibrant patterns.

    1. I love French fashion and wish I were back in Paris to do some major shopping. What French brands are doing Liberty? I always assumed the price is so high because Liberty fabrics are so expensive.
