J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Anyone notice the home page feature "We can't keep these in stock!"? I clicked on all the items- all of them have a full size run available. Silly J. Crew.

In other news, I'm supposed to receive the Liberty ruffle Jackie tomorrow- will post a review once I try it on! Fingers crossed it's a winner- I love the print but the button-down fit was off for me.

    1. I love my liberty Jackie! Runs small so if I button it gapes but I don’t wear cardis buttoned so no big deal to me. It’s lovely!

    2. @Alyssa - I assume that means “we can’t get rid of this stuff!” But, speaking of things they can’t keep in stock, why doesn’t J.Crew stock more of the navy blue Saturday pants? They’ve been out of stock in most sizes for many months. The same was true of the late, great weekend skinny sweatpants. The solid navy were always out of stock, then they discontinued them. This is something I don’t understand about J.Crew: they’re having serious financial problems, but instead of stocking things that they know will sell, they decide to offer a dozen different goofy looking one shoulder styles that no one wants. WHY?

    3. Yep, definitely needed a size up in the Liberty Jackie. But I had ordered 2 sizes as I generally find the Jackies run small- I sized up in the sequin starburst Jackie last season too. So I have one to keep and one to go back along with the Perfect shirt in the same print. Yay! And since I purchased in Jan, I'm keeping you no-buy February ladies company for now. I haven't made a rule that I can't buy, but if I make it a month without feeling there is a must-have I need to purchase, then that's great! We'll see what the next roll out brings.

  2. I tried on the merino turtleneck with side slits. I quickly tried it on when I received it last week and knew I'd keep it for the price.
If you hate drop shoulders it's not for you!
For layering under a blazer it's perfect. I tried it on with the wide leg pants in wool, from two or three winters ago, which I had cropped. I have the shrunken merino turtleneck but sometimes that one is too short on me. I can easily tuck or half tuck this one for a cool drapey look and it's not bulky. Yes, the merino is fairly thin but that works for my needs.

  3. Waiting for % off again, lost my new beautiful Black cashmere wrap that I bought on sale over the summer... it was beautiful and new... jcrew did not even make them this year. But I been eyeing the cashmere contrast scarf in grey and pink. Pop back today... but no extra off... so I will wait... do any stores have % off on sale items?

  4. I like my tuxedo pants in white. It is not for everyone but for the final sale price I definitely gonna keep it. Very unique piece and the satin stripe is very subtle and elegant. I wear 4p in Cameron (very fit no extra room but not tight) and 6p in the tuxedo pant works great.

  5. I have worn my new boucle Lodge coat yesterday and today and I am thrilled with it - it is warm without being bulky. It's hovering around 15F where I live and it is keeping me warm. I'm very glad to have added it to my coat rotation. Now if I can just find a popback of the sandstone cocoon coat with functioning pockets I'd be all set. Wishful thinking.

I also stopped in to the store over the weekend and posted reviews/try-on photos on my blog. I tried the wrap dress in 365 crepe (love), cheetah merino sweatshirt, wrap foulard top and easy pants, Liberty cardigan, button fly Reed wash jeans, Love First and Friday tees, ruffle going out blazer and the watercolor floral cami and dress.

You can see the post on my blog here.

    1. Perhaps a bad question but have you tried asking them to do an in store search for you? I was looking for an out of stock item online and asked the online personal stylist to do a store search for me. She was able to find them in a store in Indianapolis and they shipped it the very next day. I had never used that website feature before (not the chat but the stylist button that pops up on the item pages).

    2. Thank you for the suggestion. I called my nearest store yesterday but they said they could only look up stores in the area. My phone camera is blocked so I never tried that stylist feature on the site, and to be honest, I am just so tired of chasing items around! I figured if anybody saw them I would give it a shot but as things stand I am so reluctant to continue investing time finding items when J. Crew is not invested in talking my $$. Ok rant over! :)

    3. Anthroblogger, I just did the online chat (not the in-store stylist) and they had both items I was looking for. I asked if the items were coming from the store or the warehouse, and she said warehouse. So, why aren’t they updated on their website?

    4. All that to say, you might want to try the chat ;)

    5. The downtown field in black has been in popbacks occasionally recently - keep an eye out! Hope you find it!!

  8. In keeping myself honest for no shop February I need to report that I bought something. I have been a lifelong Eagles fan and since they won the Super Bowl I had to pick up a shirt and leggings. I feel I should get an exception since this was a historic event in my life!!! Plus it isn't work wear which is really what I am drowning in.

    1. @JessF I am sure than can be forgiven :)

Sending more no-shop encouragement to anyone that wants it. I've managed no new purchases, anywhere. Continuing to put everything I have in order and give things away is helping me feel I want nothing (aside from those popback lusts), and I really like Suz Has's idea of a real wish list (not the J.Crew account wish list which I don't really use). If I still want/need something next month, I'll reconsider it then.

    2. You are forgiven!! I just purchased my Eagles Super Bowl T-Shirt as well. It certainly is a historic event!!

  9. I purchased four pairs of NB leggings ( the more expensive ones with pockets on the side leg) and two zip jackets. I've been rotating them just about every day since I got them a few weeks ago (for the gym) and have either hand washed or washed on delicate. Seams are already fraying, which I'm not happy about, and areas on the jacket are pilling. I really like the fit and they're comfortable, but we shall see about wear.

    1. Suz, that is pretty irritating. For what they're asking for those items, ugh. I hope yours don't get worse. We all have things that look practically new after years of regular use. I don't find the fast wear of things acceptable.

    2. Seriously. After not properly washing some lululemon items (or mixing with towels, cotton, etc) I am really careful. These should last years, not look worn after a month.

      Delete
    3. That's so upsetting, I just sold my lululemon jacket that I was wearing for the past year because I liked these jackets so much more. Sigh.

    4. I have two pairs of the Capri NB leggings and wash and dry them and they have been great after several months. Am sorry to hear the jackets are not great :/

      Delete
    5. That's interesting because the NB items I have that are not J Crew have been workhorses. I don't have a jacket though, just shorts and leggings. I was tempted by a couple of the collaboration pieces but maybe they are a different grade of material.

      Delete
    6. The material on the leggings I got is a little thicker than some of the other ones, which is why I liked them, and they had seaming in different places, which I found flattering. The material is actually fine but in the seams (which are more decorative I believe) the material got a little fuzzy. And I was able to remove the pills on the jacket but still feel it shouldn't happen so quickly.

  10. How do you deal with white button down shirts yellowing, or how long do you find your white button downs last before they need to be tossed?

I noticed some yellowing on one the other day and soaked it in Oxyclean for a few hours. The yellowing has rendered the shirt basically unwearable aside from layering piece. It's about 4 years old but minimally worn. It's a Haberdashery button down from JCrew factory, 98% cotton, 2% elastane. I tend to not use bleach, so I don't think it's from bleach. Sigh.

    1. Hey Suz, I have had some luck soaking my white shirts in Oxyclean + one drop of Mrs. Stewart's blueing solution. https://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Stewarts-Bluing-H-PC-81402/dp/B001NEMV3Q/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1517954106&sr=8-1&keywords=blueing+laundry

You have to be very careful and following the instruction as directed. I wish I could use it for silk shirts. I have a couple from 5-6 years ago from BCBG that are completely ruined. HTH

    2. Thank you, I've heard of bluing solution but didn't know specifics. I'll look into it.

    3. Ordered it. If it will save or preserve my shirts it's worth it.

    4. Cool! Hope it works. I now routinely wash my whites in it. It helps keep the color in the long run...just have to be conscientious doing it.

    5. I noticed yellowing on my brand NWT Perfect Fit T-shirt that was just sitting in the closet. I only paid about $7 for it during some crazy sale but I haven't even worn it to wash it to complain about yellowing! Talk about irritating!

  11. Does anybody know if any of the stores are still having the 50% off sale?

    1. My store had 50% off yesterday. That's the Century City store in Los Angeles.

    2. Thank you so much! I just called them and they said the 50% off ended on Sunday. Do they not know their own promos?
My local store said the same thing, that the promo ended over the weekend. My question is, how are they going to move the racks and racks of sale items out of the store without a promo if nobody bought them at 50% off?

    3. I was there when it opened. I called them too. They now claim it they were just removing the signs. Sorry about that. I will update you if I see otherwise this weekend. Also, madewell sale ended too this weekend. I hope you were able to snatch the Ella pumps.

    4. It would be great if they gathered up ALL the sale from every store and sell it via the website. Bring on a good promo and they could probably get rid of it all! Just my $.02 (wink, wink)

  12. Not a review, but guess what showed up in my mail today? A Holiday 2017 style guide with text "order by Dec 19 for holiday delivery" Hmm I wonder where this was hiding for 2 months? Anyway I guess I can view pics of all the stuff that is on sale now.

  13. Worth making an exception to the no (less) shop February if you can find it on pop back: the Nordic boots.

I would never have bought them final sale (shoes are too risky), but I lucked into a pair at a store. I wear 5.5 and 6 generally in J Crew and they only had a 6. It fit really well. They are easy to get in and out of (hooks on the side rather than grommets/holes). I walked outside -20 celsius (which is about -5 F) for half an hour and my feet were toasty warm. I can't speak for longevity at this point but if you get them on sale, even if they last a season I think it would be worth it to have warm feet. Laces don't seem very durable (although they are super cute) but they will be easy to replace.

I bought the black. Of course, now I am wondering if I should stalk a brown pair. I was curious about the brown ones and how the white fur would hold up (would it start to look dingy). I couldn't see anything online about the fur and how it holds up, but the brown leather can apparently stain if not treated before wearing. It seems odd to me that they would need some sort of spray/conditioner - after all they are winter boots. See link below for picture of the staining. I did not treat my black shoes prior to wearing and am wondering now if I need to treat them, not because of staining, but for longevity.

Does anyone have experience with the Nordic boots and the weatherproofing vs no weatherproofing?

This blogger loves the boots but has pictures of the staining below.

    2. I can't believe how those boots stained! I probably wouldn't wear them in such wet weather but that's disappointing. I'm sure they can be fixed. I think they're great!

      Delete
    3. I had issues with salt staining my shoes... Warm water with vinegar helped clean them a bit. Not sure if that's the cause of the stain on those boots the or if that's water/snow damage.

    4. Hi Toronto, thanks for sharing those pics! I tried on both colours last week in store -- I think the brown are really cute, and have been thinking about them since. If I still lived out east, they would be in my closet already, but living in Vancouver, it's really hard to justify winter boots, as we hardly need them, and I have a couple already, although none brown :) But I'm really glad for having seen these photos, now I can not get the boots, and never look back! Waterproofing sounds like a good option, but with all the rain here, it's just too much of a pain to have to reapply. I use Apple Garde for my non-waterproof boots, and it works very well.

Thanks again, you helped me make a solid decision on this one! The style, colour and price were really calling me!!

    5. I need to waterproof mine before they stain. Thanks for reminding me!
