J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Two review posts on the new items from last Thursday's rollout here and here (14 items total). I have some recent JC and Madewell sale purchases I'll be reviewing in a day or two as well.

    1. Where is the white sleeve tee from that you are wearing in your reviews? Is it the drapey elbow length tee?

    2. Yes, it is indeed the Drapey Elbow-Sleeve Tee.

  4. OT but need your input/advice for a friend in Europe who wants me to get the JARDIN maxi skirt for her in tropical cove. We're unsure of her size at JCrew so this is where we could use a little help. We think she's either a size 6 or 8, her waist size is 29 in. and she wears a 29 in levi's what size would you recommend for her in the skirt? 6 or 8? When an associate and I measure the waist of the maxi skirt it was 32.5 for the size 8 so I was hesitant to get it. Heeeeelp!!!

    1. Joelle - The jardin maxiskirt is running one size large, according to most bloggers. I agree with that. With a 29 waist, she is probably a 4 or 6 in J Crew, not accounting for body shape. She should go with the size 4 in the jardin maxi, imo. Irl pics & links to other bloggers in this post.

    2. Thanks Gigi, I think you're right too. Online specialist said the size 2 has a waist circumference of 29.5 in. but I took a size zero I think the 4 is a safer bet. Luckily SF Jcrew was able to order it (and not FS) and waived the shipping hooray!!! BTW, they have tons of linen cardigan on sale in almost every size as well as a lot of dresses (lucille in white and purple, cha cha dresses etc. on sale -30% in-store) and lots of shoes.

    3. I think I'm in the minority, but I thought the Jardin maxi (and regular Jardin) both run small in the waist. I'd buy it in an 8 or maybe even a 10 (but I'd buy myself a 6 in a pencil skirt). I don't own the skirts, that's just my opinion from trying them on in-store.

    4. I definiitely took one size down in the Jardin Maxi.

    5. I'm a 29 and a 4-6 in jcrew and I bought a 4 in this skirt

    6. I guess I should add that while I buy a 29" waist jean consistently at J. Crew, the rise is lower than the Jardin skirts. In a skirt that sits high on the waist, I need to size up because I am thicker in the stomach area. I wish J. Crew just had free shipping & returns like Nordstroms, it would be so much easier when you can't get to a store.

      Delete
    7. I agree with you Kate, Nordstroms return policiy is the best. I also think that the skirt looks better when it sits high on the waist which is what I did. I'm hoping my friend is going to do okay with a 4, luckily the SA says the skirt was returnable (by some miracle she ordered it for me with a -30% and no shipping fee).

      Delete
    8. Thank you also dagmara for your input, this skirt is going to travel a long way so I want to get the "right" size for my friend. Can I ask you what size you wear typically in dresses? My friend is also interested in the circle eyelet dress. Thanks.

      Delete
    9. Joelle - I saw all those cardis in SF. Makes me wonder if they pulled out backstock. The Jardin went to $69.99 in-store, so that's why the SA got it for you at that price + 30%. I haven't seen/tried the circle eyelet dress, but you can ask the very proficient AJC about it. She tried it on in this post.

    10. Joelle I am typically a 4 in dresses but a 6 in pants due to my hips.

  6. Update on the in-store price notes in this post. Featherweight cashmere cardi $139.99, back-bow dress $79.99, dreamweaver wedges $89.99 and others I saw on 6/18. You'll see those & other recent dates in red.

    1. quick question... i ordered the lucille dress in eyelet despite the fact i know it's cheaper in store because i don't think they had my size... if i decide to keep the dress, will CS do a price adjustment for me to match the in-store price? should i contact my PS?

      Delete
    2. MissJR - Contact your ps. Customer service will want you to be at a red phone with a sales assoc on the line to confirm the in-store price. However, they may not want to honor the addtl sale price because the promo will have ended. Store SAs move onto the next thing and don't keep track of when promos begin/end/how much, etc... I ordered the other day and 30% was not applied to a promo item over the phone because my ps and the phone rep were in agreement that the addtl 30% didn't apply. I went right home and ordered it on my computer. Anyway, yes, despite what I just said about my ps, work w/your ps on this and good luck :)

  7. I am going to recommend the Lexi Dress which is currently on massive sale. It was on massive sale even before the 30% in fact. I have it in the caspian blue and the vintage peacock color, the colors are gorgeous. I took my regular size 2: it comes to the knee, it is very flattering yet simple, the sleeves are not too fitted and there is a hidden back zipper. The lining is a full smooth acetate and the silk taffeta is very good quality, like dresses of old.

    1. I was wondering about that one, Dani! I may have to go ahead and order it now :) I was worried the neckline is super matronly but if you say it is flattering, I believe you!

      Delete
    2. I'm sorry it is the Lexa not Lexi. I keep thinking of it as the Lexi, my daughter has a little friend with that name.

JCrewJD I did not find it matronly at the neckline, I like that it doesn't show loads of cleavage but still has the perfect amount of room for a necklace. It is a simple shape but the fabrics are very nice. I think right now the price on it is super duper.
I can't get to it today but I'll try to do a blog review with pictures tomorrow!

  9. I tried the linen print tunic this past weekend and I am wondering if people know that it is a knit and not woven linen. It is very snag prone and the fit was aweful on me (tried a xxs and it was still big/boxy). Also, impossible not to wear anything under it, low cut is an understatement. Very disappointing IMO. The print and colors were beautiful though.

  11. I wanted to share a quick review of the Drea Patent Peep-toe pumps (Item 64452), currently on sale online. I've now worn mine 4 times to work all day (including my subway commute and walk on Boston's brick sidewalks to work and back) and they are really the most comfortable heel I've found in a while. I definitely recommend them if you're still looking for a summer work shoe or a moderate heel to wear to a wedding. I have them in my regular size shoe (unlike the Mona pump, which I size up).

  12. I got the Raj Paisley and it seemed short so here are some measurements: size 0 is 19" long, size 2 is 19.25" and not the 22" as advertised.

  13. Any reviews on the fit and comfort of the Sydney patent sandals? I have been looking at them since their debut, but I am worried they are not comfortable to walk in. The lining is man made, right?

    1. A - Review of the Sydney patent sandals in this post and a link to 3 other bloggers' reviews. I find the heel to determine comfort a great deal of the time and these have the right heel for me. You can also try the Band-Aid blister blocker to kick things off right when you first wear any shoes that you're worried about. HTH :)

  14. I'm wearing the Audra patent sandals today for the first time. They are super cute, but did start to rub on the back of my ankle almost immediately. I immediately applied some blister stick to them and hopefull that will do the trick. IMO, they come up a bit high on the back of the ankle and that's why they're rubbing. Also, b/c they're patent, there's not a lot of breathability. But since they are so open on top, it's liveable. Cute sandals to wear every so often. I wouldn't pay more than the $30 or so that I paid for them.

  15. Can anyone comment on the white factory ankle skinny jean? I vaguely recall someone recommending them but can't seem to find it now. I'm just really unsure about sizing. I'm a 2/4 in JC skirts and shorts (2 in the waist, 4 in the hips), but I don't have any of the denim. I only have the toothpick ankle cords from 2009, which I found bizarrely tiny and had to size up to a 29 to fit my thighs/calves in (my legs are very muscular). I just ordered the factory skinnies in two sizes (28 & 29) to try on, but the 28's are backordered until 7/13 (I'm hoping the 29's work out and I can cancel the 28's). Anyways I'm just trying to find out if I'm on the right track or if I should have also ordered 27's/30's or something else crazy. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rebekah - I took my usual JC jean size of 29 and they fit perfectly. And I love them, very happy w/them. They're not sheer, etc... I'm guessing you might want the 28s, however, depending on your leg fit the 29s might work out. Don't canx the 28s just yet, but I don't think you need the 27s or 30s. HTH

    2. Thanks Gigi! You gave me the reassurance I needed :)

I hope the 28's ship early!

    1. Elaine - Saw an SA with it on and she had a chambray shirt over it, tied at the waist. Her accessory choice was the railroad necklace. She looked adorable. If I thought I had a shot at the waist fitting, I would've tried it on.

    2. I love everything except it was cut too low in the front for work, very flattering on and it has pockets!!!

    3. Lovely, lovely dress. Hits above ankle though, it's not a floor-sweeper. Fits quite snugly under the bustline as there is no elastication at all, and the straps are not adjustable. All that said, I would say it fits TTS. Also note that the current in-store price is much lower than the online price.

      Delete
    4. cagliari67: What is the in-store price on the dress?

      Delete
    5. I can only give you Canadian pricing - saw lots of this dress today at Yorkdale. Original Cdn price was $230, first markdown was $139 and today I saw it tagged at $97(less 30% of course to bring it down to $67). Adjusting for U.S. pricing, I would expect it to be maybe $79?

      Delete
    6. FFM - Last price I know of for the raj paisley maxidress in-store is $79.99. That was on 6/7.

      Delete
    7. Saw it for $79.99 in SF. HTH.

    8. Straps are adjustable, which helps bring the bodice up some. The straps are attached by two buttons in the back. There is at least one button hole above that allows you to shorten the straps. HTH.

  17. Alexis I hope you don't mind this OT comment, but I just came from J.Crew's NYC sample sale and thought I'd give a report for any JCAs interested.

There are items from J.Crew (men's and women's), Madewell and Crewcuts. Jewelry, shoes, bags and accessories too (belts, hats, etc.)

I was mostly interested in shoes. They had Monas, Vivs, Valentinas, flats, suede wedges, espadrilles and flip-flops. Heels are in the $100-$150 range mostly while flats are mostly $60-$80. All sizes were stocked but the selection was thin -- maybe 15 or 20 pairs per size in less desirable colors. Bagwise I saw Edies (both the bag and attache version), some leather envelop-style clutches (one with calf hair which was very cute). There were a few cute Madewell small crossbodies too for $90 or so. The bags were $85-$180 from what I saw. There's three display cases of jewelry, mostly current stuff in the $30-$65 range. It was going very quickly.

There is a rack of Collection pieces with mostly sequined stuff and a few more cocktail-style dresses. Sorry I don't know the names of any, but as they were in the $130-$200 price range I wasn't too interested. Lots of chinos in both pants and shorts in a wide range of sizes, mostly navy and black. Some denim, mostly toothpicks, and lots of tops in mostly XS/S. As was the case in the past many were true samples marked up with marker or held with safety pins. Tops seemed to be in the $40-$65 range from what I saw, mostly polys, very few silk or cotton tops from what I could see. There's one rack of skirts too.

On the men's side, it's mostly long sleeve tops, chino pants and one rack of blazers. I could not see any suits and the accessories seemed very slim. Shirts were in the $40-$80 range and blazers started at $125 from what I could see. I'm not sure if they had men's shoes.

The Crewcuts section was four racks of mostly girls' clothing. Lots of cute stuff that started at $25. I didn't see any bridal or bridesmaid items.

I think the sale is worth going if you're into digging for that one special find. I came away with a couple of things that are sold out online so I'm happy, though the shoes I was looking for weren't there. Hope this helps, sorry so long!!

    1. I just came out. As usual you need to know your prices but it is worth going IMO. Regular skirts are a good deal at $25 and work/party dresses at $60 too. Collection items are priced as marked, which is often more than the price you can get on fs the website (but they have a lot of one of a kind stuff). It really depends on your luck: I saw someone walking out with a Tillary tote in the blue sea color for $120.

    2. Awesome, thanks! Is there a long line to get in? What time did you go and how busy was it?

    3. I had planned to go early but it didn't happen and I got there around 10.10. I almost got discouraged by the long line that went way down around the block but it actually went fast (I was in at 10.45). You have to take into account that the line to pay can be very long too and I didn't try stuff on (another long line). Dresses are mostly a size , I didn't see any size 0 but I skimmed a bit through them and only looked at the one I was interested in. I came home with a bag (the big Brompton in a beautiful navy leather), a pair of Collection red snakeskin flats ($65) and the keyhole silk blouse in navy ($49).

    5. Carolyn, I will try but I am having issues with Blogger this week. In any case it is actually bi-color, navy and black or lighter navy and dark navy. It could be a one of a kind or something that will come out in the Fall, as I saw a few pairs of shoes that were marked HO12 (not Manolos!)

Sorry for the typo in my previous post, I meant that dresses were mainly a size 6. I saw many Talitha blouses for $40 and a few Blythes in neon azalea in big sizes.

Re. the Talitha, I am in the love camp. I wore the wreath one today with white jeans and it is so pretty. I am considering the Belvedere red if it pops back during the sale.

I ordered this when it came out--it's a lot better looking in real person than online. The colors are really great--for a print the peach/coral dots are really vivid and bright looking, and the navy is a nice navy color. It fits like a normal popover. I'd recommend it.

  25. Can anyone tell me how the chino shorts fit in comparison to the double-serge pencil skirts? I take a 0 or 2P in the pencil skirts and haven't tried on many JC pants. I normally wear a 26 pant but I go down a size in everything else (dresses/skirts/tops) at JC. Body type is straight and thick-waisted, no hips but do have a normal-sized butt. 31. A quick bit of love for the anchor popover hoodie. I bought it to take on my beach vacation, even if it is really cheesy to wear anchors at the beach. What can I say, I love the critters! Fit is TTS, held up great in the wash, unlike some of my other purchases (looking at you vintage cotton!). Some people have complained that they don't like that it doesn't have the kangaroo pocket...I LOVE that it doesn't have the pocket. I have a bit of a leftover mama pooch, and I think not having the pocket makes me look slimmer.

    1. I bought the anchor popover hoodie and had it ready to ship back as a return but then had to travel and totally forgot about it. Now I am back home and I love the longer length, which someone, Rose of 1 More Shopping Blog, I believe suggested I would. It's similar fabric to the sunwashed sweatshirts from last year and mine have really held up well, which is why I gave it a second chance. A bit pricey but actually worth the money if it lasts and I think it will. :^)

  32. Perfect shirt in chambray polka dot: Finally found the chambray shirt I’ve been looking for all season. The fit is TTS, and is somewhat fitted. The best part for me is that no gaping between the buttons! This is huge for me...really, I think this shirt fits me better than any button I’ve owned from J.Crew. I’m excited that I can wear this for work, but then make it casual enough for play…with some colorful chino shorts or white jean shorts, perhaps? As you can tell I love it and it went home with me.

Heart throb Bikini: Love this print even more in person, but this sure runs small to me. CS rep told me to get a S in bottoms (I’m a 4/6) and a M in top (I’m a 34C/34D or usually a small). I ordered small and mediums in both. Let’s just say the mediums in both the top and bottom BARELY fit. It really is an itty, bitty, bikini. I’m afraid to move when wearing it that I may expose everything. So once the large is in stock…I may order that. But it is super cute…mixed emotions.

And I spotted some new colors in the chino shorts this weekend. The two that really caught my eye were a true red and a dandelion yellow. These don't appear to be online just yet.

    http://apackageaday.blogspot.com/2012/06/few-reviews-from-last-j-crew-summer.html

They include the multistripe dolman sleeve tee (the navy/coral one), the kaleidoscope cafe capris, and the navy boucle tweed jacket.

  37. Ok, many have chimed in with a Perfect shirt in chambray polka dot reviews and IRL pics, but I just wanted to add my 2c- I love love this shirt. I could not wait to put my grabby hands on it and went straight to closet where I have played with it for half an hour- see the fruits of my labor here. I have dedicated a separate page for all of my older reviews here.

    1. Thank you for posting those cute options with the chambray shirt! I never think to pair necklaces with button downs...I'm pretty stuck in the box when it comes to that. I love your ideas, so I can't wait to see what I can pair with this shirt.

  38. The wool cafe capri pants in navy are coming up as final sale online :( Can anyone advise on sizing for these? I've heard from some that they're TTS and others that they run big. For reference, I'm a 27 in jcrew denim and 4 in most dresses -- should I order a size 2 or 4 in the wool cafes?

    1. Mamakoh, I wear a 27 or 28 in most bottoms and take a size 2 in the cafe capri--wool and cotton. HTH!

    2. Mamakoh - agree w/AM MD, sz 2 sounds like the right fit for you :)

  40. I'm looking for a bikini top that will offer as much enhancement as possible (ruching and padding both a plus!). I'm thinking about the Tulle french twist top. Can anyone comment on this one or offer any other suggestions?

    1. I can say what to stay away from. The hidden underwire bandeau tops are wide- I buy these bc I find them comfortable. The tops that are designed more like bras will give more lift and reveal- ie. tulle French or tulle Betty French.

    2. Side tangent--does anyone know if the bra-sized bikini tops (in 32A) will fit a 32AA? Not worried about band size (my torso is closer to a 34) but cup size, as I usually wear push-up 32As to prevent gapping.

  41. Could someone please comment on if the No. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge cotton wrinkles easily? I'm hesitant to buy one as I sit at my job all day and hate having waves and folds along my skirt when I get up. TIA!

    1. Kat, the No. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge cotton wrinkles very easily, which is why I will not buy it. I am a pencil skirt addict but this one just doesn't work. It also stretches out. I tried on the hot pink color, and just from sitting once in the dressing room for 10 seconds, it was wrinkled as all get out. There's a reason it's marked down so much, I think. It is pretty to look it, but doesn't wear well.

I think the long version might be better because it has a lining but the price is still too high on that one. Has anyone tried the long no. 2 cotton pencil and does it wrinkle badly?

  42. Any reviews for the Brompton mini-hobo in Pale Gold? I'm wondering if it is similar in color and texture to the Metallic-leather Gallery hobo from several years ago?

  43. HI FFM, they had some in my store. It is a very bright, shiny looking gold. It wasn't muted. I wouldn't wait until final sale in case you don't like the look. It looks paler and more subdued online imo.

    1. Thank you Shekster. I agree with you about ordering before final sale in case I don't like how bright the gold is. It's too bad it isn't closer to the online pic. That's the color I would have preferred it to be. Either that, or more of a rich gold like the Thompson tote from several years ago.

  44. For anyone interested in the brulee necklaces, I think they are gorgeous. The double crystal (93054) in crystal is especially pretty and the jumbo necklaces (95098) in both colors are so fun.

  45. I just received the Flower Lattice Necklace in the multi color and it is AMAZING! There are overlapping layers to the necklace that makes it pop. The colors are vibrant and I think it is a true work of art.

    1. I received this necklace as well and it is gorgeous! I have received so many compliments when I am wearing it. I keep it simple with a white shirt or my chambray shirt and it makes the whole outfit pop! It is very well made however quite pricey. It was my summer splurge.

  46. Received the Inez mid-heels and while they are absolutely beautiful, I felt very unstable and the ankle strap didn't flatter my leg. Thsy also looked a bit old-ladish but maybe it is just me or the black color. All in all I did't see myself wearing them so I returned them. My regular size fit perfectly. l might give the flat sandals a try because I really love the lattice detail. Anybody tried them and can tell me if the ankle strap is too short?

  47. I reviewed the Flower Lattice Necklace today on my blog.
kms423, I agree the flowers are very pretty and the sparkly bits are stunning.
I however can't do the neon. The pink is very different from the online shots, it is a true neon pink as opposed to an azalea pink. I sent it back.

  48. Martina wedges -- Yes, size up!

I'm a 7.5 in most J.Crew heels, a 7 in the new soft ballet flats, but an 8 in the Martina wedges. These fit like my old 7s in heels. So I'd say go a full size up from most shoe sizes and a half size up from your usual J.Crew size.
