"Thanks!" to many of you who shared the latest email from J.Crew this morning.The email announces that J.Crew Factory (click here to shop online) is now open for business. However, it will only be available on the weekends.
I have to say, I am a bit confused as to why it is only open some days of the week. It kind of defeats the purpose of shopping online (which is 24/7). Perhaps, it is to make it seem more exclusive? In any case, I am happy to see Factory is up online (even for a few days a week!) I am also thrilled that you can combine shipping costs with regular J.Crew. {Yey!}
What are your thoughts on J.Crew's Factory move to online? Do you like some of the current offerings?
Some of the Factory sweaters look attractive, but they are $50-$70+ on sale. That doesn't seem like a bargain to me. I can do just as well (if not better) in the regular-JCrew sale section.
ReplyDeleteI have a Factory Store nearby, and I tend to only buy things when they are 30-40% off -- otherwise they seem to be almost as expensive as the regular stores.
Not so sure about this - looks like the prices are about the same as sale prices at the regular J.Crew (if not a little more expensive than you'd expect from a "factory" outlet-type retailer!) and I am very concerned about what the quality will be like. Did they just choose some of the best selling pieces and have them mass produced with limited quality checks, or are these leftovers from previous seasons?
ReplyDeleteI agree on the pricing. Too high - I thought the same on the t-shirts as well. I did like some of the items but it was difficult to justify a non-essential purchase at those prices. I did order some of the men's critter bulldog socks though - excellent gifts!

Interesting that all sizes of the Imperial tee are available. I was told they were sold out everywhere at two different outlets a few weeks ago.
I think they are trying to make this like Rue La La and those type websites. They are offering re-creations of previously popular designs and hoping that the limited offering will entice people who missed out. The thing is, the prices are too high. It does make me want to go to the outlet to see if I can get a better bargain though ;)

ReplyDeleteThe factory version IS different than the original version at the regular stores. The regular version was so tissue thin, that I got holes at the underarm after a few wearings. I've been wearing it only with a cardigan on top. Well the factory version is MUCH better. The same print but it is on a thicker shirt material, not as tissue thin. I actually think its a better quality tee.
Some of those prices are ridiculously high. Several of the t-shirts I actually bought last year at the regular j.crew, and bought them on sale for cheaper. What gives???

Though some of these reproductions from previous seasons look attractive the quality isn't the same as retail and surely the prices don't reflect that. You can do better if you can go to an actual outlet since sometimes they offer additional % off certain amount purchases along with other $off or %off that item.
ReplyDeleteI think the move for JC to put the Factory online for limited days is to cut costs in operation (or like a trial period), try to get the customer to hurry and buy something during a limited time, and also unload some of the factory items that they don't want to mark down any further to get the inventory moving at the crewlet.
I would like to see some crewcuts at the factory online since I don't have one near by me, but if the price is not low enough I wouldn't bite.

ReplyDelete@tea: I wear a size 4 and I tried on a small at the outlet last month. The outlet Imperial tee is more of a slub fabric (less give) than the original which was tissue. I guess you are in between a small and a medium but if you size up the v-neck is likely to be cut a bit lower IME. Hopefully you can get one that works out. Sorry, not much help.

ReplyDeleteI for one love this - I didn't have time to call around for the tiered lace cami when it first arrived at the crewlet scene and missed out - much easier and IMO I'd rather pay a little markup over "this is a steal / what's it's worth for a bargain hunter ( and I consider myself one, at times)" for the saved TREK out to an outlet...especially when they (1) may not have anything at all for me (tourists!!) and (2) are probably shopworn. I'm not going to drive 2 hrs round trip to the outlet just to shop all day (though once upon a time I could!)

I got the lace cami and lace pencil I'd been eyeing. I'm probably (lucky for me) their target customer and darn happy they are online and combined with the regular site.
I like this very much. I have no outlet near me. The closest one would be a 6 hour round trip. Needless to say I don't make it out there often! I am excited about some alternatives. Cotton Mayas, for example, since I live in a warm climate. I love that some of the prints that I adore (no one does prints like J. Crew) are available in interesting pieces. I picked up the Kelsey blouse in the evening primrose print. I am really hoping they restock because I'm dying to pick up the lace cami in my size!

I was just about to submit my order, and it was removed from my cart. ACK! Anyone got a line on some B&M outlets that have this in stock? I'm ready to start calling around the country to find it. Rats!
I went back to look at the lace cami ppl were talking about and it's not there. Could it have sold out already? And was the lace skirt the silver one? That was all I saw.

I too wonder if some of these items are leftover retail or exact duplicates for the factory. The primrose brynn dress looks the same to me and at significant markdown from the retail price. I would be kind of angry if I had bought that dress at retail.
Innneresting. And kinda awesome. I love the pop-back aspect of some of the things I missed out on. Agree that the prices could be a little lower. I hope that means the quality is comparable.

jcbellemarie - The lace cami is a major steal too because it's $40 cheaper online than it was in the factory stores. I bought mine a couple weeks ago and LOVE IT. It's so romantic. I was worried about the quality but I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it was.
ReplyDeleteFor those that don't have a factory store nearby I think the online shop is a nice feature. Usually the factory stores do the same fabrics as retail but will do it in another type of item. Though online I see a lot of remakes of last years items, like the knox, trentino and primrose brynn dress. It's nice for those who might have missed something. I know people are happy to see the Imperial tee.
I'm going to stick with shopping at the actual B&M outlet store during super sale...but it is nice they have some offerings online. Some of the blazers look really nice and they are relatively well priced. On another note, I noticed they updated the website with new arrivals and the new slide show "The Hit List" for women....I was so pleasantly surprised at the outfit styling in it. I would probably wear most of those outfits...maybe with a few slight modifications...but overall, the styling is much more wearable than it has been lately!! yay
ReplyDelete@Stephanie: I have the retail evening primrose brynn dress and it's made of silk. The factory version is poplin cotton so thus the lower in price. However, I would like to get the skirt version if it's lower in price eventually.

These clothes are specifically designated "Factory," which suggests to me that they are actually a differnet manufacture - and the email says "designed exclusively for Factory at JCrew".
ReplyDeleteSo beware - if they are designing pieces specifically for this line, I think it's very likely that they are using cheaper material and processes. I read an article about this last year - a lot of brands are now designing a low-cost line specifically for the outlets. Brooks Bros does this, and I can tell you from experience that the prices are lower (although, like J Crew they aren't that much lower), so is the quality.
Will be curious to hear what people think of the quality of stuff they buy from the Factory line.
I'm dying over a few of the sweaters (namely the prints!) but the prices do seem rather steep compared to what I can usually buy things for at a B&M Crewlet.

Interesting - as other JCAs have mentioned, the nearest Crewlet is 3+ hours away from me, making a "drive-by" stop nearly impossible. I am curious what others think about the Factory cotton taffeta belle skirt. I'm dying to find this in the "regular" version size 4 or 6... but it seems impossible! I'm tempted to buy thru the outlet but am concerned about quality. Opinions please!!!

@ Christy - I have a cotton belle skirt from the outlet. I don't think there is any taffeta in it but it's very well made and a nice shape. And I love that they tend to make it prints I might have missed out on.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with JCK. I have a factory store 10 min away and I only shop the clearance, and only then when it's an additional percentage off (which it almost always is). I am surprised to see that most of the online factory stuff is remakes of recent retail offerings. And that the pricing is only about 20% less than retail on most items. I'd be wary of buying factory items online because the quality is usually not so good.

Rats On Parade gave you all the link (thank you!) for the tiered lace cami and it is incredible. I feel the quality is there, and do not feel bad one bit about buying it as I feel I will have a use for it for many years to come.
In re: higher priced items at J. Crew and the factory stores...I will pay it IF and ONLY IF the cost per wear is okay by me. Those AR Trapp sunglasses I bought in July? I wear them EVERY SINGLE DAY. That is 60 days so far, so the cost per wear as of right now is less than $7. I look forward to next August when the amount I spent will equal a cost of $1 per wear. That is WAY better than my stardust pencil skirt in copper, which I have only worn once (but again, it is a piece I plan on keeping for a long time).
I also will NOT accept quality that is not there. If the item is falling apart, I do not care how pretty it is, it is headed back to the store. (I have only had that happen to me a handful of times, though.)
This is how I justify my purchases. I also tend to NOT buy basics anymore. I have enough pants, tees, socks, etc...most of my money is spent on a few bigger items a season.
Just thought I would mention that as I really don't want to have to continue defending why I love such items over at my blog (it happens every once in a blue moon that someone will comment about it...why, I just don't know as I work really hard to save money for what I love and don't get why my hobby is up for debate). :) I know that some of you totally understand that last sentence. LOL.

Okay, totally off topic -- I'm curious if anyone has bought crewcut items to wear themselves. I'm petite and generally wear J Crew 0 or 2P, but I'm not entirely flat either. Do I have a shot in heck to wear a Girl Crewcut size 14? I had hoped to try it on at a store, but SA told me that stores don't carry Crewcut size 14. Any help/advice would be great.

My experiences at Crewlets suggest: 1) the tissue thin construction of the regular JC offerings are actually improved when translated to the Crewlet/Factory line. Guess heavier slub (or knits) cost less than tissue thin/featherweight, all the better for my wash and wear and wash lifestyle; 2)fit is a bit off in the Factory versions, as a Fiona jacket I tried on one year was quite stiff and snug compared to the retail version; 3) there are some real gems, like the down puffer vest with fur-trimmed hood I snagged. While not cheap (close to $90) but it's lasted through 4-5 winters. Just my 2c.
ReplyDeleteThe site is interesting from a "trip down memory lane" perspective but every time I have gone in an JC outlet store, I have left without buying anything. I know what the originals looked like and the outlet versions just look off to me.
ReplyDeleteFrom a marketing perspective, here is one theory though:
Apple is rumored to come out with smaller iPad versions and the theory is that the prices won't be that much cheaper, thus making the full version seem like a better value. And this is no slight against Apple, I like them. Mickey was/is on Apple's board.
JCAs have noted that the outlet prices here are not much less than the retail versions. Will this drive JCAs to see the retail versions as a better value when they compare them to the outlet versions?
Carnivore Girl: I wear size 0 and XS or XXS tops (32B) but have slightly wider than average shoulders. That being said, I ordered an adorable Crewcuts ruffled tank a few months ago and it fit me perfectly. I don't know how regular tees with sleeves will work due to shoulders; have never tried on cardigans to judge arm and body length since like you said, they don't carry size 14 in the store (kind of stupid). Pretty sure it is free shipping on any Crewcuts order, so maybe worth a try ordering a few things and see if they work? I don't know if is free return shipping, though.
ReplyDeleteCarnivore Girl - I tried some Crewcuts things in a size 14 to see if I could wear them. Like you, I'm a size 0 in JCrew, 5' 2" and a 32C. Specifically I bought the gingham blazer they had for girls in the summer. Although it fit, I found it to be too short in length. I just didn't find it to fit me right, especially when I compared it to my JCrew blazers in size 0. The JCrew blazers just fit and looked so much better!!
ReplyDeleteI won't be trying anymore size 14 Crewcuts anymore after my experience. You could place and order and try it . . I think it is free shipping and then you can return to a store. But I would suggest passing and sticking with the normal JCrew sizes. Hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteRegarding the Factory stuff. . .I like a lot of the items! If I weren't on a spending freeze (I kind of went crazy in August), I would totally snag some of those items. Living in Arizona, I appreciate that many of the sweaters are in cotton. Wool is just not practical for me. (106 degrees today, ugh!) I also like a lot of the prints. And I think that there are some good deals on the camis. Sure it might not be the same silk at regular JCrew, but I wear most of my cami's under sweaters anyway for work. Hmm. . .might have to break the freeze and go for the eclipse dot cardigan in bright olive with the kelsey ruffle top in plum raisin. Would be adorable with a pair of tweed pants!
Carnivore girl - I've bought a few crewcuts pieces. I'm 5'8 though and the dresses are too short on me but if I was 5'2 I could probably have worn them fine. I'm usually a 0/XS up top and a 30b and the tops fit me fine, I can normally do a 12 but because I'm taller sometimes have length issues, especially sleeves. I was told the boys sizes also run a little bigger than the girls and I've been able to fit into the boys 14 sweaters with no length issues. The crewcuts clothes are so cute if I was petite I would be shopping them more than the womens selection probably. I have actually seen size 14's in the stores before, but perhaps they were returns.

I went to my first JCrew Outlet Store this summer and I bought some flipflops and accessories: belts, etc. The belts were not real leather. Did not realize this until I got home and the outlet was on a long road trip so no returns....12 hours away! ha ha. I still like them though and will wear them:)

ReplyDeleteI purchased a cotton v-neck sweater at the crewlet and was really disappointed. It pilled and the color faded from a beautiful fuschia to a pinkish red. The quality looked and felt fine in the store but after a few washes it looked like a rag. I'd be very cautious of the cotton sweaters.
ReplyDelete@Carnivore Girl Given free Crewcuts shipping I do think it is worth it to try a few girls/ boys 12-14. I am 5'2" and small but not flat-chested. My shoulders are fairly narrow. Own best bets have been girls' cardigans not made in adult sizes (good for summer and early fall if you don't mind the 3/4 sleeve or wear a shirt under and flip the cuffs back), boys' sweater vests, a boys madras blazer in charcoal and a couple of tees. Boxiness and length can be an issue as some earlier posts note, so worth calling or emailing CS and checking measurements against reg. 0/XS/XXS. Also worth shopping sale as bigger sizes hand around pretty decently. HTH

ReplyDeleteI don't plan on purchasing from the online factory store. I have 2 of them very close to me, yet have only been 3 times total because I really don't care for the quality of the merchandise they offer, especially at the prices they charge.
ReplyDeleteI know it can be tempting to purchase, since they offer previous seasons prints or items you might have missed out on, but just be aware the quality is not the same as retail, even though you are paying fairly close to the prices of retail.
CCS: I only have the printed ones, no solid silk camis. They do have the little string bra strap holders. Unfortunately one of the strings snapped so now I've got to figure out how to mend it! I handwashed a Kelsey that I wore the other day, line dry and then ironed. Still looks like new but the ironing of those ruffly pleats took some time & effort. I hate the smell of the dry cleaning solvent.
ReplyDeleteBefore my coffee this morning, I almost pulled the trigger on a bunch of stuff -- lots of items I missed out on in the retail version. I took a deep breath, and managed to just go with the lace cami, b/c it looks lovely and I can see it being a special piece. We'll see! I have an outlet just under an hour from me, and I've definitely gotten some nice items, and some disappointments. These prices actually seem on par with the stores, although they stores usually have specials and a good clearance section. Maybe if this takes off, they'll have factory clearance as well. I like the idea, just know that it's not going to be exactly the same quality as retail, so you don't get super disappointed.

It appears that the online factory is offering roughly 20%-30% off on the merchandise right now. That explains the difference between the store price of the lace cami and the online price.

I'm kind of on the same boat as everyone else who hasn't been terribly impressed with factory quality. I'm already worried enough about retail quality so I can't see spending any money and taking a gamble on factory quality. I've purchased things from factory that have either held up well or fallen apart and/or faded and/or developed holes but it was all purchased at lower prices than the ones offered on the site because of the extra percents off. That doesn't mean I didn't feel like I was throwing money away or losing an item I had grown to love.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, these prices as well as quality concerns and stinky timing to look exclusive and play inventory games don't impress me. I like how all the pencil skirts are hilariously short too. Well played cost cutting J. Crew. Good luck finding deals but be wary of quality issues.
Also, it seems like sizing can run kind of big on certain items but I haven't figured out a method to the madness.
tea-I own the non-outlet version of the Imperial tee and the v-neck is too deep even if you size down (at least for me). I wouldn't base your decision on the v-neck. I'd plan on wearing a tank under it, unless the outlet version is not as low cut. Also, the original tee is really long or is has grown since I don't put it in the dryer. The description for the non-outlet version of the Imperial Tee says it's "supersoft slub cotton" not tissue. hth

I shop at J Crew's factory stores a couple times a year, and while I always come home with bags full, I end up with some wonky sizes. In retail, I'm always a sz.2 in tops and bottoms, but at the factory store I've had to size up to 6 and 28 in pants and jeans sometimes. The matchsitcks come to mind. I constistantly have to size up in the jeans and cords at the outlets. All I can think is maybe the vanity sizing didn't carry thru to the outlets?

Most of the great pieces are gone. I saw this in my email at 6:00 AM CST and found some amazing outerwear pieces. This morning, no comments on the blog, so I pulled the trigger. Who knows how happy we will be with our results though.......Now the outerwear pieces are removed. Going going gone!

ReplyDeleteTweedle Beetle, I've seen the outlet Maya. It does have less draping and is a little bit lighter weight than the merino version. I liked it, bought 2 for my friend in Canada. I like that it's cotton, it's washable and it would be better for me since I live in a warm climate. If I didn't already have the retail Maya in every color, I'd definitely have picked these up for myself.

I'm really, really, really not trying to be snarky. I'm just confused why you'd order where the prices are higher.
The only rationale I can see for this is that it's easier to get popbacks (like the elusive Imperial Tee). But that's the only benefit...
Can someone tell me if there's another?
ilovejcrew, I am excited to get the things I can't get in store. For example, this morning I ordered the Kelsey blouse in the evening primrose print. I can't get the evening primrose print anymore at retail, and when I could I didn't care for the shape of the top. Likewise, the Belle skirt is available at the outlet and hasn't been available at retail since 2008. I love that skirt! The lace cami was $795 at retail and sold out without going on sale, it's $159 in the online outlet (if I can snag one in my size). I see your point about the tees, but for me there are things at the outlet that I can't get at my B&M or online, so I'm happy about this option.
ReplyDeleteI remember how excited I was when I walked into the outlet j.crew 20 minutes from me in the fall of 2008 because ... they were doing the follow-up version of the 2007 Paris catalogue. I also, unfortunately, remember how disappointed I was - the quality was so apparently inferior, I didn't buy a thing. I've gone twice since, and both times just walked around effortlessly raising my eyebrows at the prices - hello, $70 dollars for a nylon/wool blend skirt? I don't think so. Like I mentioned on the other thread, the famed FLOTUS blush tweed outlet skirt is $90 - I got the retail version for $100.

I actually did a charge send for the Factory Bella in the primrose print. I mailed it right back. It's not lined and was about 3" shorter than the "regular" Bella I have in my closet. I was disappointed.

@Marisa: I have the retail version of the striped tees from last year but they end up getting holes in the tummy area and the sleeves as I wear them. I guess you can't get much wash/wear from tissue tees. I think other retailers might have striped tees. Gap has couple and I'm sure you can search for cheaper alternatives. I've decided to spend less $ on basics like Dina since you can find similar styles else where. Just my 2c.
ReplyDelete@egyptomaniac: I've also had to size up at the crewlet. The tops have been pretty consistent with my perfect shirt size and alpha size, but the bottoms are everywhere depending on the style, skirts, or jeans.
Did anyone notice whether the professor blazer was available in a full range of sizes? It's only showing up in sizes 4-10 right now, and I'm wondering if it's sold out in the other sizes or if those are the only ones it's available in. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe main thing I'm not liking about the Factory online is that there are no pics of models in the clothes. You can often tell the look and fit of an item better by how it looks on the model.

ReplyDeleteAs for the poster who asked about the tees, I got all three of those tees: The Medallion Tee, the Beaded Bloom Tee, AND the Sparkling Rose Tee on the J. Crew Online site in the past week in my size. It took a few days of waiting, but the items do popback. And yes, for $10.
If JC was trying to operate like Ruelala or ideeli, they can't compete. The major difference being that there is not an attractive stock of items and frankly do not seem that discounted to be warranted as "factory" or "outlet" type pricing. I also agree that the weekend-only window defeats online being open 24/7...very silly!

ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about it all. I thought it would be great but I don't get the concept of outlet Collection items as by definition the Collection items use the finest fabrics (or at least they should). I think that having an outlet version of those Collections items cheapens their image a little bit and could backslash (like in "let's wait and see if the outlet offers a cheaper version").

What is the difference between factory and crewlet? I don't think we have either in Minneapolis, which is odd, we usually get everything.
To be clear to all. J Crew has factory stores. They're called J Crew Factory Store. The nickname is Crewlet or J'Crewlet (J crew + outlet) which is shorter 'n' fancier than saying Factory Store. Items are produced specifically for the factory store/Crewlet. The items are usually from the year prior. So right now they're running the Kelsey top from Oct 09 is now in the factory store.
ReplyDeleteJ Crew does not send clearance items from the regular retail store to sell in the factory store as an outlet would. Or at least how outlets used to. Many retailers have items that are produced specifically for those stores. They often appear to be the same as what you'd buy at the regular retail store, but they're usually made with lesser materials. Someone posted this article awhile back. It's a good read.
I think that outlets are very hit or miss, and am not usually willing to spend the time looking for hits. I did make an outlet trek to Waterloo on Labor Day weekend and some of the stores had great sales (40% off everything, etc) but the Crewlet had no sales. They had signs all over the store like,"$10 off sweaters" but the stuff just wasn't priced to move. I was excited to see an outlet version of the Anton that I didn't get last year (no Dream yarn for me) - but it was cotton, kind of itchy, and like, $88. I left without purchasing anything.
ReplyDeleteHowever, at the BR outlet their 'deal of the day' were this crystal button cardigans made of cotton/nylon/spandex that fit very well - like a TTS Jackie with long sleeves - for $20. I was impressed with the quality and picked up 2 in black and camel. Clothing-wise, they were the nicest quality things I'd seen at the outlets (except the haul we got at Carter's for my infant niece!).
I get the concept, esp for those who have no easy access to a crewlet, and it's fun to see the lovely prints like primrose again.
ReplyDeleteI have a crewlet 10 minutes away, and I rarely go. As others have said, I browse, I love the LOOK of the familiar prints and styles, but by and large I have been so disappointed with the fit and quality for not much less than retail on sale.
On the lace tank ... I got a similar one at Forever 21 last yeat at FFM's brilliant suggestion for $25.
I'll enjoy looking, but for me the online sales and sale section of my Collection B&M will probably continue to suit me better. The exception: the library print. If they brought that back I would jump.
Gigi- That's true however you will from time to time find a current store item at the outlet and I am not sure why. For instance I was in the crewlet last week and they had the spice tee and paris tee which are currently in the regular retail store. I came across a tee last spring that I paid full price for at the store and it was the exact same tee on the sale rack at the crewlet. Not sure why/how this happens.

Friday afternoon - Martha Stewart Show (now on Hallmark Channel) featured J.Crew once again - showed the latest "Jenna's picks" and had a J.Crew designer on there (can't remember her name - maybe head of women's design?). Martha was promoting her "Martha Presents: The Women Who Dress America" special on Hallmark this Sunday evening - looks fantastic. She will be interviewing Jenna Lyons, Donna Karan, Tory Burch among others. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteRe: retail items at factory, I regularly see them. They are always on the clearance rack, and they have a tag that says "original price: $XX, our price, $XX". Recently they had a couple of random retail cashmere sweaters marked this way. They were $50 at the outlet. Not bad. They also often get collection items that didn't go over. I got the collection glitterati mini at the outlet for like, $20 last year. And last time I was there (last month) they had a whole section of merino turtlenecks from fall '09. And t-shirts that are currently in retail stores as someone else mentioned, which is weird. I'd say 3/4 of what I ever get at the outlets is retail stuff that has been shipped there for whatever reason.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of July, I purchased two retail cashmere 3/4 sleeve cardigans at the Crewlet for the whopping sum of $28.78 each. Last Thanksgiving weekend, I visited an out of state Crewlet and found a big rack of the previous year's retail cable crewnecks and various novelty cardigans. Got the houndstooth bow cardigan for less than $30. Sometimes you just get lucky!
ReplyDeleteI used to go to the factory store where I went to college and had friends that worked there and I can tell you that it is NOT the same thing. The tag on the factory products will have two white diamonds on it.
ReplyDeleteOccasionally, and I'm talking really rarely, the factory store will get a couple of overstock items from retail, but that rarely happens anymore because J.Crew has "Clearance Stores" at their distribution centers now to get rid of real retail merchandise that has been returned, overstocked, etc. (For example in Lynchburg, VA- I have been there quite a few times and it's amazing)
The stuff at the factory store may LOOK like retail, but it is not the same. There are subtle differences in fit, fabric, and LARGE differences in quality. The prices are outrageous for such bad quality. You can get the original product from retail on sale for cheaper or the same as you can get the knock off/remake/inspired item from the factory store.
Why would you ever pay more for less?

ReplyDeleteRE: crewcuts for women, I just received my first crewcuts purchase, the stripe boatneck tee in size 12. I am 5'6 and typically wear a size 0 or XS in J.Crew tops, and the crewcuts size 12 fits well -- the length and bust are fine, although the sleeves are a bit short (hello, 3/4 length). At $24.50, a cheaper (and for me, better fitting) alternative to the vintage bateau top.

Jackie: I'm 105lb and 32B, so I wouldn't be too concerned about the 76-80lb guideline (for CC size 12 tops, anyway).

ReplyDeleteI have a couple of Crewcuts tees, that fit quite well, that I just love! For refrence, I'm 5'9" 122lbs. and a sz. 2 in J Crew. I used to be able to wear the boys sz. 10, but those were tees from '08/09. I think last year they revamped their kids sizing too. All their tees have a much leaner/narrow fit now, so if I bought them now, I'd go with a 12 or even 14 in boys .
I also buy Crewcuts for my 3yr old son, and his size 3 tees from '08 are the same width as the sz 4-5 tees from this season. The size 4-5 are just longer. I started buying Crewcuts and hoarding them away before my son was even born (is that normal?), otherwise I wouldn't have known they changed their sizing.
Do 3 yr olds care about vanity sizing, I wonder?
And the girls stuff fits smaller overall. I'd say a girls 14 is equiv. to a boys 12. I wonder on this too. I guess they assume a 3 yr old girl should be smaller in size than a 3 yr old boy?
In response to the Factory stuff...not a fan. It just looks cheap to me. I'm sure it's not terrible in person, but I wouldn't trust it.
ReplyDeleteA bit off topic: is it possible to shrink Merino wool? I've certainly made the mistake of washing Merino sweaters and drying them, but I don't remember whether or not they shrunk. I ask because I'm worried about the upcoming arrival of my Merino Whisper ruffle sweater.

I think I can tell the quality isn't quite as good, but in this case, it was ok for me. I really wanted a navy blazer and ended up getting it for around $116? In any case, I recommend it. It is lined and fits nicely.

ReplyDeleteI found the selection was jusy ok. They did have 3 tee's that I was looking for the Imperia which in answer to Teas question I have it in a medium (I'm a size 8) and its perfect. I also saw the 2 dog tee and the headache medicine tee which I ordered ( I had got the imperial on e-bay and the two dog tee shipped tp me from a outlet sstore in my area. Items were a bit pricey overall for an "outlet" but I hope the selection improves. I couldn't figure out the whole weekend only thing but since I'm n ot near an outlet I will pop in from time to time.

ReplyDeleteMIRABELLA HENLEY: I just wore mine today after debating hard about the price, I paid full price, so I was going to return it. Where did you see it? It's the first day wearing it, so I cannot attest to quality yet. It fits TTS, although the sleeves are slightly tight. It does suffer from a serious case of cuteness. I have the burgundy one.
I LOVE the pear earrings, too, in that color. Now the quality talk has me all freaked out though.
Sometimes I get some great buys on the sales rack at the outlet store, so I'll be tracking the factory online stuff a bit - I think as long as the buyer is not necessarily expecting the same as the retail item, and is happy with the price (and happy enough with quality) then it can be worthwhile. I have a few summer skirts and pants that I've bought at outlet stores that I was happy with especially for the price point. So I think it's a good option to at least look at, even if I don't end up buying too often.

ReplyDeleteNot sure about the factory labeled JCrew clothing. Normally people go to factory store to get a bargain, but the ones on the factory site are in a price range that can hardly be considered to be a bargain. Instead of putting the factory store on line, probably Jcrew should consider to improve their existing product quality and website. In my recent order of 8 items, one dress got a hole after the first rinse before I even wore it, another t-shirt got a hole after a first wash - I have to admit that I bought these items on sale, but still who would expect that they only last a few times of wearing... This is very troubling!

BTW, here's an update: after having the sweater on for approximately 7 hours, the pilling under the left arm was UNREAL (I am left handed). Totally makes sense though, as I carry my small, lightweight, butter-soft leather handbag under that arm (sarcasm alert). I will credit J Crew this: after years of shopping at Gap, Limited, and OLD NAVY, it was J Crew who can proudly attest to me dusting the inch of dust off my garment piller and plugging it in to go after the pills. Seriously, I cannot believe the quality of knits anymore. What does everyone else do? Am I just out of touch? Do you all use pilling devices on a common basis? Does the merino wool pill big time and, then, stop after it "wears in"? Again, I have an old (4 years?) Limited 50% merino & 50% acrylic v-neck sweater that I held up next to a 100% merino v-neck from J Crew Fall 09, and guess which looked better!?! I am tired of knits, and worrying about wearing them, and downright FEARING washing, even dry cleaning, them. I am tired of coming home and having to tidy up my "raw edged silk" embellishments by cutting off all the hanging silk threads from a few hours of wear. I am completely disillusioned and am going to actively find another store. This summer I rationalized the quality as, "oh, well, it's because it's featherweight, I should have known not to buy something so thin." Well, now the merino. So what is left to buy other than blazers, which are completely impractical to me. I know some of you rail against synthetics, but some of the strongest, sturdiest clothing I have purchased is synthetic. And I took out my Kohl's cashmere from last year, looks gorgeous, even machine washable. (Compare to manager at MOA recently telling me, unprompted, that J Crew cashmere pills, but that it's a sign of the high end fiber that's used and excellent quality; do I have the word "idiot" printed on my forehead?). Sorry about the long post, prior to last fall I avoided clothes shopping and had given up, so my new found permission to go into debt for clothing is an exercise in frustration and disillusionment, especially when I am shopping at J Crew and not Old Navy.

So sorry to hear you are feeling some of the same feelings I have about JCrew lately. I have a mint green cashmere cardigan that is still in my closet two winters later. I am seriously afraid to wear it much b/c of what might happen to it. Have worn it twice for about 1 hour out to eat.
I really love the store and want them to do well and improve.
Seems like they are almost doing a Ruelala type thing, what with items being available only for a short while. Probably to put more pressure on people to buy and so as not to detract as much from the regular jcrew site traffic.
ReplyDeleteNot too enthused about the offerings this time, but maybe next time. I LOVE the regular jcrew outlet, sometimes more than the store itself! I find it to be preppier lately whereas the regular store is trying to move away from that towards a more modern look.
So far, I have had better luck with the 12 gauge cashmere, but I size up to wear over shirts and they are loosely fitted. For the featherweight, it's unfortunate that it's so vulnerable because the thinness works well for layering and summer. If they came out with the same knit and fit they used on the Cielo with the cashmere colors, I would choose that instead of the featherweight cashmere.

I was able to get some good replicas (I'm calling this since most of the styles are copied styles from previous year) this summer such as the marakesh top, monterey stripe skirt, and some more, but the fabric content on sweaters and jackets are just terrible right now. Wool contents are below 50% in most of them unless it's merino. I tried on the Gallager cardigan and I couldn't keep it on for a minute. It was SO itchy. So was the Anton sweater. Unless you will be wearing long sleeves under these sweaters I wouldn't get them. And in the back of my mind was how long would these last from piling and fraying? I did like the schoolboy blazer but I was between sizes and they didn't have my size and color I wanted. No extra % off purchases over $150 or more. The sale section was very picked through and the prices weren't that attractive since they didn't have additional % off lowest ticket price. For those looking for the striped long sleeve tissue tees, they brought it back from last fall, but at $29.50 it's the same as retail price. Crazy price for factory tees.
Anyways, from the current offerings I don't think I'll be going to the Crewlet anytime soon.
Hi, all. I'm a longtime admirer but neophite J.Crew-er (recently became doctor, FINALLY!) now that my income allows it and my attire demands it.
ReplyDelete@ Carnivore Girl: I weighed 89 lbs. at 5'3" (the price to be Dr. Oblivion, lol: I'm back up to godknowswhat now) and bought the tulle 14 CrewCuts skirt (2008 or 09) pretending it was for my niece but knowing it was for me. It rides high on the waist, which is annoying due to my piercing but I taped over it, threw on a black leotard and the high waist worked! (they look great on models and with pencil skirts but face it, high waists are hit or major miss) After reading others' comments, it seems that tops are best left to reg. JC while skirts (not slacks/shorts, for obv camel-ish reasons) are do-able as long as you can accommodate the high waist.
