Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I posted this yesterday (see below) so my question is, where do you find decent, simple shorts that don’t need to be replaced each year? I prefer a 3-4” inseam, not tight on the thighs. I just ordered Everlanes two pull on short styles to try although they’re not exactly what I want. I also have Paperbag waist black and white gingham fro MADEWELL coming but that was the only pair I saw that I liked. I had some decent pull on ones from factory but find their sizing too inconsistent.

I seem to have quality issues with almost all my shorts. Very frustrating. Zippers not sipping properly, hems coming undone.

Last year I purchased the Paper bag short Item K1514 which are perfect for these days. I don’t wash or dry them often and mostly on delicate. The hem stitching is so poorly done that yesterday I noticed a long thread down my leg and before I even realized what it was the hem started falling.
The material on my black poplin tie waist shorts ripped and the zippers don’t zip well.

The side zip trouser cut shorts seem to have better hem stitching but the zippers can be problematic. I feel like many of these could be found at discount stores under a different label for much less money. I just wish they’d last more than a season without needing repair or to be tossed.

  2. I have several pairs of JC's stretch chino shorts in various inseams and they're in great condition still. Granted, the season for wearing shorts in NYC is not long and I can't wear them to work so they're limited to vacations and weekends but I've not had any issues with zips or seams. I've probably gotten a new pair once every year for the past 5 years just to add more variety of inseams and colors to my closet, and the quality seems consistent.

    1. Also want to add that the material is important. I think stretch chino is a much more durable fabric than poplin or whatever tencel/poly material that the Point Sur line tends to use for bottoms. I've had similar quality issues with other Point Sur bottoms, particularly anything with elastic or paperbag waists. In general I try to avoid buying PS items; to me they seem similar in quality to H&M clothes.

    2. I have had mixed results with the fit of those. I used to have the 3” inseam in many colors but got rid of them. I think the only pair I have left is the eyelet pop out ones, the 3” inseam. (Slightly different but similar style.)

    3. The jcrew poplin on the tie waist shorts is basically a light stretch chino fabric. I don’t think I actually have any point sur shorts.
