"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. No matchstick cords again this year. Very few non-blend wool sweaters for women. Appreciate the classics way more than I realized and some of my older J Crew items are needing replacement. Unfortunately there is nothing to replace with from any retailer. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and buy ALL of the merino cardigans and matchstick cords I could get my hands on!

    1. Today I'm wearing the 9" high-rise toothpick jean in garment-dyed corduroy (navy) and although they are not the matchstick I do like them a lot. Quality seems good, slight stretch and the rise is not too high on me - you might want to give them a try.

    2. While this is going outside the Jcrew box, Ann Taylor Loft has cords in the Modern Skinny fit that feels similar to the Matchstick IMO

    3. Thank you for the tips. I have the Loft cords; they don't really work for me. Sized out of Talbots. Bought a pair of Chaps Ralph Lauren at Kohls but they're not really matchsticks and have a weird elastic band inside the waist. I never thought it would be so hard to find a basic like this. Keep seeing the stacks of colors at J Crew in my mind and kicking myself for not buying more!

    4. I hear ya! When I look back at Fall 2010 a favorite time for me with JC, I go to Ebay and look for that product.
It shouldn't be this difficult to find decent basics!
      All the best to you!

    5. I tried Lands’ End cords last year. I liked the fabric, but I already donated them to Goodwill due to the sizing. If you want to try them, I recommend sizing down. They stretched out a lot and the waist was up to my boobs. After I lost a few pounds, they were definitely unwearable.

    6. I have a pair of matchstick cords from 2012 in a boulevard green in a size 26S that are hardly worn, if anyone's interested. I'm a skinny-cord girl at heart!

    7. Hi. I've gotten some good cords in an array of colors from J Brand, Adriano Goldschmied and Citizens of Humanity via eBay (new). They fit well, and they have good "bounce back" (i.e. don't stretch out too much after wearing.) The key is to know what styles names/numbers work for you and your size. The ones I have bought via eBay been skinny ("toothpick") ones but that's because those are more readily available. I buy on eBay because the retail prices are outrageous but Nordstroms and other good department stores will probably have them. (Also, I believe that each of these companies has its own website and if you are in the US, you can probably try them.)

    8. Thank you - I will definitely check these brands out. Have had great success in the past with Citizens jeans.

    9. Yes! I bought the toothpick because I needed a new pair, but I had to size up and ended up returning the lighter color I bought because it looked too tight!

  2. Not a vent but a styling question - Has anyone worn their Cameron cropped pants with a low boot for a work outfit? Now that I have tried the new full length version and they didn't work for me, I would love to transition my cropped pairs for the cooler fall weather. My ankles are already cold today while wearing the tie waist star pants today!

    1. I had mine on yesterday but had kitten heels on, I live in Atlanta and it's still hot. My thoughts are that it seems a low boot would work if they were the tie up style that fit close around your ankle and not the pull on style that stand away from your ankle. Not sure if that makes sense or not!

    2. Yes, I wear mine with all different shoes with my naked ankles but, but I want to cover those cold ankles up now! It makes perfect sense :) I have to get into my closet and do some experimenting.

    3. I wear mine with ankle boots but I am 4'10" so even cropped they hit the top of my boots.

  4. Does the cardperks code stack with the current promo? Or did it expire?

    1. I tried last night with the 35% off promo and it didn’t work. 🙁

  5. I called CS to do an exchange on a pair of pants that I purchased with the Rewards $, and they said I would totally lost the reward $ on a return or exchange. That is not communicated anywhere, so of course I complained, and was given a credit for the reward $ amount. So in the end, I am paying the same price for the exchange as the original.

So be aware this may be an issue. Reward $s are effectively final sale, though that is not mentioned anywhere when you make a purchase using them.

    1. Didn’t use to be that way. That totally stinks! Thanks for the heads up.

    2. That doesn’t seem right, especially with an exchange.

    3. I've had the same experience with rewards lately - you lose them if you return something. Definitely a bummer.

  7. JC no longer sends me catalogues (er, style guides) -- even tho my JC profile indicates they do.

JC no longer sends me e-mails, despite repeated efforts to change my JC profile to receive them again.

Was it something I said, JC?

    1. I definitely don't get them as much as I used to (I stopped buying from JC for a while). Do you purchase from them often?

  8. I have a heartfelt vent.... it took jcrew 8 days to ship my order plus 6 day for delivery. One of the items, Blythe silk shirt, has a very strong perfume smell to it :( I would throw it in the wash and not care but it’s dry clean only. I really hate parfume smells.

    1. Me too...it's one of my absolute worst pet peeves as I am prone to migraines and strong perfume triggers very painful and awful headaches.

I sometimes wonder if some women are buying items, wearing them all day with the tags still on, returning them, and they're being resold as new. So gross.
