"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Not really a vent. It seems J Crew’s policy of no additional percentage off sale is successful, at least with me. I find the sale price is acceptable even if prices used to be lower. Anyone feel the same?

    1. It depends. I'm seeing things I ordered long ago at higher prices, and other seasonal items like the tropical floral wrap blazer, with barely any percentage off (I could have bought for about half price mid-summer). If I found prices were reasonable enough I'd order but most of what I've looked at is more expensive than it was previously.

    2. The pricing of sale items is really hard to understand. Some of the items get marked down extremely cheap (before any extra % off promo), but some of the older items are actually listed at higher sales prices than they were a year ago. I've been placing an embarrassing number of orders despite the lack of extra % off on sale items because I feel the price of an item is a good/fair one, but the thing that I really wish for is free shipping to Canada every once in a while. Or a program where I can pay a yearly membership fee and get free shipping. It's $12 flat fee per order which I know intellectually is fair given the work that goes into shipping it to me across the border (and I know that I pay a lot more for shipping when I ship packages personally), and I think it's great that they allow me to return without charge to a store as opposed to mailing it back at my expense. I mentally add $12 to the cost of the item(s) in the order and if I still think it's OK, I go ahead, but it does add up over time. I keep track separately of how much I am paying for shipping and it is a little horrifying/embarrassing when I look at it over an extended period (like a month, quarter or year)

    6. The lack of %age off sale is making me bite on the full price promos since I know those deals are likely the best I'll see for awhile. It's making me NOT buy sale, so stuff that doesn't move is going to linger a lot longer. I also object to things jumping up higher in price after being reduced way down.

  2. I miss the promo header at the top of the website page. It looks prettier now but somewhere there needs to be a link showing the details and end date of the promotion. As long as I’m venting, an extra percent off sale (or another markdown) would be nice occasionally. As others have said, prices should eventually decrease on items as the season ends.

  3. Website checkout not working. When you try to apply promo or checkout It goes to a page that says “you have nothing in your shopping bag.” Urgh!!

  4. SERIOUSLY! They keep making things ineligible for promo. One day i can get the academy loafer in the savemore promo the next day i can't. In the beginning the polka dot roll neck sweater was eligible and the next day it wasn't. The promos don't do anything if you keep making good things ineligible!

  5. I ordered several cheap sale tees last week when SKIMM was still working. Anyway, one of my new perfect fit tees arrived with what appears to be a large bleach spot on it, probably from someone’s deodorant or skin care product. J.Crew CS kindly offered to allow me to select a non-sale color for the sale price of only $5.09 plus free overnight shipping. Hooray! I decided to order a few other things to make the overnight shipping worthwhile. It’s crazy to overnight one tee, right? I used the 40% off 4 items, an additional 15% off from my style guide and $25 in rewards and ordered 4 of the tees plus 2 pairs of the new slim fit terry jogger sweatpants. Has anyone tried them yet? I hope they’re similar to the skinny sweatpants from a few years ago. I still have 2 threadbare pairs of the 4 I originally bought and I'd really like to replace them. The Saturday pants I bought last winter are disappointing. I really like the fit but I’ve only worn them a few times and they’re falling apart. I was also looking at the supersoft fleece sweatpants. I’ll probably give them a try eventually, too, unless the reviews are terrible.

  6. Same. My saturday pants from about 5yrs ago are in better shape than the ones I orderd 2ish yrs ago.
would love to hear how the new joggers are. luv me a good lounge pant.
have to lay off ordering...way too much spent on shipping this mth. $96!
has yet another but smaller weird experience returning in Vancouver store. I take the train downtown...so I am not going to lug boxes with me. I always have my returns neatly repacked and orders organised.
the SA (new one ...at least to me) told me as I was unpacking. .."to try and leave them together" for her...well I go to a heck of alot of trouble to make it so easy for them...and they still are rude to me.
    I need a break obviously.

    1. $96 shipping in one month?! That’s crazy expensive! I wonder why they aren’t offering free shipping in Canada like in US? I love that I can order a cheap sale item and not pay shipping.

My initial impression of the slim fit terry joggers: they fit like average sweatpants from Target. They’re much looser fitting than my Saturday pants and my old skinny sweats. I did size up as I plan to put them in the dryer, so I may like the fit better after they’ve been through the wash, assuming they shrink a bit. I thought I ordered 2 pairs but I actually only ordered one and I’m glad. They’re ok, but I don’t think I want multiple pairs. I’ll update after I’ve worn and washed them.

On a happy note: I was extremely surprised to see that CS price matched all 4 tees instead of only one. I did not expect that at all, but hooray!

    2. yup . eight orders over the mth. $12 a pop. $96. and not one break from CS. after I hinted maybe because two orders were put through 23 hrs apart....they could waive shipping on one. nope. still had to pay. my only salvation is I return instore so that is free. I also get the "experinece" of the SA not loving the return process they have to do...for free.

    3. should add for $12 it takes 10 business to get here. pathetic. IMO.

  7. Returns are taking so long to be processed... I just got an email "your return has arrived" on a blouse I sent back last month, maybe longer. I had totally forgotten about it to be honest. That's another problem with the slow returns, I can never really be sure what my J Crew card balance is since I have returns pending, and honestly half the time I forget to check to see if they are being credited properly.
