JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I posted another styling idea for the Factory Colorblock sketched cotton tee here. It popped back on the website this morning in a couple of sizes.

  2. I have been in store and asked about outfit options for particular items and I seem to get the same response everytime, " A chambray shirt" or "a pair of white jeans". I don't think they spend enough time with associates on how to style. Sometimes they will try to walk around the store to find something they think will look good but not really in a J.Crew way, if you know what I mean. I was in store the other day and a customer asked what came in to go with an item, the SA explained to them that nothing really comes in to go with anything. I get that. That is why I shop J.Crew. I don't want a matchy outfit. I want things put together in an interesting way that is different. I know they send pictures of what goes on the mannequins for the store but I think beyond that there doesn't seem to be much styling expertise offered at the store level. Maybe they could work on that. I would also think that the SAs would look a little sharper since they have so much access, I don't find that to be the case. I rarely see them in current merchandise and they could be a huge tool to sell this stuff.

    1. I would love, love, love it for the VPS's and/or SA's to run a Polyvore site. My VPS's have always provided helpful outfit combinations, but it is more on an individual level. A one-stop shop would be great. I often do Polyvore or general Google searches when deciding about a purchase, particularly an FS one!

    2. I'm sure the SA's get a great discount, but they probably still have to pay for the clothes themselves. Thus, there's got to be a limit on what they can purchase and still make all their other living expenses. While it's likely the expectation from corporate and customers that they are in (mostly) head-to-toe J.Crew at the job, I think it's unrealistic to expect them to shell out $$$ to purchase what comes out every month. I'm still waiting for my company to subsidize my Prada desires . . . :-)

    4. I know you are, I have looked at your IG many times. You are the one that convinced me to buy the metallic Cyprus sandals.

    5. Doodle Daschund - I concur!! I have been in 3x in the past 7 days and chambray shirt, chambray shirt is all I hear. I asked the SAs why they're not wearing new things and I've gotten a look. A look that I interpret as they don't like the merchandise. Interestingly at one store, the SAs seem to be reaching way back into their closets for their old favorites.

I also think a good amt of the merchandise they've been selling doesn't fit the dress code. There's some policy about dresses. I don't know if it varies by store, district or is the same company wide. I still don't understand it, but remember thinking -- that eliminates most of the dresses you sell!

    7. My SA said that they have to cover their shoulders. She had on the cute midnight floral jumpsuit topped with a denim jacket. Sleeveless is only allowed with a jacket or cardigan over.

  4. I would love suggestions for styling the mini skirt in midnight floral jacquard, and also suggestions for styling the midnight floral silk blouse. :) I know the skirt is pictured on their website with a button-up but I rarely wear those and don't have one that will go with this skirt, so I would love some other interesting suggestions!

    1. .You could be “matchy” & wear the cocoon top in the same print with a navy belt or a fuschia pink for a pop of color. For more casual looks, I would try the silk camisole in misty turquoise; noticed there’s a turquoise detail on the piping in the skirt. Might also try the linen boyfriend tee in spring peri, linen scoopneck tee in neon azalea or crop linen vneck tee in navy. The good news is everything is on sale at jcrew.com.

    2. Thanks for the ideas! I hadn't thought about wearing lighter colors with this skirt. I'll have to try some out.

The midnight floral blouse looks great with a royal blue skirt.

  5. I've seen many different "store rules" - my favorite was the rule of 3. Each SA had to be wearing at least 3 pieces of JC when on the floor. This led to such styling miracles as: cardigan tied around waist, scarf rolled up and used as belt, ribbed cotton tank over flannel shirt, gray teeshirt over silk dress... So I guess it stimulated imagination but perhaps not in the best way.

I was regularly told to wear anything with "a little jean jacket .' Including a bridesmaids dress.

  6. I think J.Crew has been missing the mark lately. There really hasn't been anything that I've *had* to have this season. I suppose this is reflective of their current sales woes and layoffs. I'm really bored, though. I miss the preppier styles circa 2008-2009.
