Katie Holmes... Welcome to the {JCA} Club

"Thanks!" to Priview who shared the following article from Fashionista (click here to read in its entirety) with us:
Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise Probably Aren’t the New Faces of J. Crew, But We Think They Should Be
By Dhani Mau
August 3, 2012

Judging by celeb gossip magazines and blogs these days, you’d think Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise were the only celebrities living in Manhattan. Their every move... is recorded, including, apparently, several recent trips to the Columbus Circle J.Crew.

In fact, the adorable mother-daughter pair went to J.Crew so many times in one week (four), it lead WWD to speculate that Holmes might be “trying out for” J.Crew or engaging in some sort of formal relationship with the brand. It’s not so far-fetched, we guess. As they point out, Holmes has fronted the brand twice– first in a catalogue with her fellow Dawson’s Creek co-stars and most recently in an ad campaign with the cast of The Romantics two years ago.

Sadly, Holmes was likely just rounding out Suri’s Crewcuts collection, as a J.Crew spokesperson confirmed to the trade that they were not working with Holmes in any formal capacity. However, that doesn’t mean it’s out of the question, right? She’s no longer fronting J.Crew competitor Ann Taylor and if J.Crew ever decided to sign a celebrity mother-daughter pair for an ad campaign, which we think would be brilliant, we can’t think of anyone more perfect than Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise. They both already wear and represent the brand pretty perfectly if you ask us and it’s nearly incomprehensible that Cruise, at 6 years old, has yet to land a modeling gig. I mean, what is she waiting for?

If modeling is out of the question, why not a Holmes & Yang X J.Crew collab that extends to CrewCuts?
If visiting J.Crew four times a week leads to speculation that someone is the new face of J.Crew, then I must be president! ;) Of course, my technique is a little different. I stop at several J.Crew's in the same day (there are several within a relatively short drive from each other which makes this possible). This helps minimize the stares from store associates, who I know are thinking "oh, it's you again."

But in all seriousness, there is no judgement on this side of the aisle, Katie. We JCAs, we welcome you with open, well-dressed, arms. :)

What are your thoughts on Ms. Holmes many visits to J.Crew? Do you think she should be the face of J.Crew {again}?

  1. I think Katie's always been a JCA, she's just being photographed wearing it a lot more now because she's allowed to leave the house.

    1. I agree! Katie has always been a JCA, ever since the Creek days. :)

    2. Don't forget about a wishlist for the website. How about making the online catalog available every month, too?

  3. I think they are adorable but may be too plebeian for Mickey. He wants his clothes to be seen in Vogue not US Weekly.

  4. Has anyone reviewed the crystal daisy blouse she is wearing? It looks "short"

  5. I bet she posts here under an alias, lol!!!!

  6. Haha, Alexis. Stares only? The SAs know me by name and our store has only been open a few months. :D

    1. Alexis for President and Rose for CFO! LOL I think KaSur would make a great splash if they were contracted by JC.

  7. The managers and SAs know me and my sons' names...so embarrassing as I'm trying to get my double wide stroller between the aisle of the sale section! I just love to look/browse/stalk an item. I'm the one who comes in all the time but rarely buys anything FP. I'm THAT customer!

    1. Wendy, i double that. I try to squeeze my double stroller past the mannequin racks between the display tables to get to the back. They know our twins' names. Hubs asked once how often I come to JC for the SA to know me on a first name basis and vice versa.

      Eeeeeeeeh........well, Ricky, Ethel and I .....

    2. We should go shopping together with our boys and really give the SAs something to talk about and tidy up after we leave! My older son used to run to their display windows and start destroying the props! I couldn't get out of there quick enough!

  8. I think she reads the posts and comments here, and gets the scoops on sales, etc. Smart girl.

  9. Alexis, that was funny. You should add that to the JCA Quote It feature. lol

I'm guessing there is some sort of AT contract clause that would prohibit her from signing up w/J Crew for a certain period of time. I didn't buy her or any of the other faces they've chosen because I don't believe those celebs wore the brand. Katie would make a perfect JCA -- whoops, she's already here - hi! (waves) -- I meant she would make the perfect celeb face for J Crew. Only thing is everything would sell out at full price within minutes and her fellow JCAs here would be out of luck.

    1. I suspect she had to sign an NDA that would prohibit her from doing that for at least 12-24 months. How long ago was it that she did AT?

      Delete
    2. It was just last year, spring 2011. It would be an exclusivity agreement, accompanying or within a NDA.

  11. Big deal. I've visited JC MORE than 4 times in a week. HA! I'm the "face" of JC in my city! Anyway, I don't like celebrity pimping for brands. I'm old fashioned and really miss MODELS. I REALLY hate that you can no longer buy any magazine without a starlet on the cover. And it's the same person over and over. YAWN. This month's Vogue features Patti Hansen and Tatiana Patitiz. Both very famous models. Why couldn't they put one of those lovely ladies on the cover? Beats me. There is some actress on the cover that I didn't even recognize. And it's not a very attractive photo (IMO). Gone are the days of gorgeous mag covers and layouts with gorgeous models. Bring back models! Bring back Lauren! Katie....she looks like a smurf.

    1. I kind of agree... we are probably wearing this stuff first, so they are just copying us. They aren't the trendsetters, we are!

    2. Straycat: I agree with you that magazines should return to models as cover subjects. And too thought that Tatiana Patitz should have been on this month's Vogue cover -- she was one of my fav models during the early 90's. There was one close-up photo in that editorial that showed her, wrinkles et al, and she looked unbelievably beautiful. THAT should have been on the cover. (Sorry to deviate from the JCrew discussion...)
As an aside -- Boden has used another model from that era in their Autumn collection, Helena Christensen, and she (and the clothing collection) looks fantastic.
      (loved the Katie-Smurf comment too!)

    3. In the same vein, it truly galls me that all these starlets are putting out their own clothing lines and makeup and shoes, etc.... Like they really need the $$ and like they really have much to do w/the design process. It irritates me sooooo much. I refuse to buy JLO, or Jessica Simpson, or Kardashian whatever. Most of it's crap anyway. Sorry to veer OT!

  12. OT.....I just got an email from the Mothership saying every women needs a white shirt with a detachable sparkley necklace collar. Ummm...JC sells necklaces! And shirts. I DO NOT get this at all. Stupid and gimmicky.

    1. I thought the same thing! And for the love of J Crew, could we PLEASE use a dang iron on all those wrinkled shirts?!

    2. Agreed. I think it's too trendy and I'm definitely not going for it.

  15. I'm actually surprised she can't just ring up Mickey and have a few things sent over gratis, LOL! I wonder what it's like when they show up and the store. I'm sure she's super nice but I wonder if everyone totally bugs out. I might, lol.

When I go to either of my local B&Ms, I'm happy to say only one person knows my name, but the ppl who have been working there for several years ALWAYS greet me happily and kindly. Sometimes they say 'where have you BEEN? we haven't seen you!' which is funny too. They all know I almost never buy anything FP, which is probably why they don't cultivate a relationship with me. But what I don't spend on individual pieces I more than make up for in volume because my tastes change from year to year. A smart SA would pick up on that and be taking down a list of my sizes and what I want so he/she could alert me when it gets marked down, and/or when extra 30 or extra 40 off sale shows up.

Just sayin'. But I have no complaints otherwise with my local in-store experiences.

    1. RE: bugging out--I was in my Nashville Banana Republic many years ago (8-10), and noticed a gorgeous woman even taller than I (I'm 1/2" shy of 6') browsing the racks nearby. When I went in the dressing rooms later, several SA's were back there quietly freaking out. Turns out the tall beauty was Elaine Irwin (sp?), in town with Josn for a show he was doing. I kind of loved how excited they were, esp considering how many 'music stars live in/come through our town.
Wonder if NYC-ians play it cool, considering all the celebs in town?

  16. OT... for Canadians who like fashion/interior design check out the Sept. issue of House and Home mag. Knit/wear designer of J Crew ( and Toronto born) Olympia Bergmann's New York Apt is in this issue. I enjoyed it. Carolyn from Vancouver.

  17. modernmom.....maybe wrinkles are part of the cool hipster look? Enough already. It's getting so old. I like dressing up but I don't like it when people look like they are wearing costumes. A shirt with a detachable necklace collar seems costumey to me. Just sayin'.

  18. petit-jour.....I couldn't agree more! The photo of Tatiana showing her wrinkles proves that not all women fear aging. She looks stunning. I bought that issue specially because it featured two famous models from my past who I admired. I remember when Patti first starting modeling....I'm 55. I used to get all the fashion mags, but not anymore. Not because I don't love clothes....because I don't give a rodent's behind about starlets.

    1. I prefer models to "stars" on the cover of fashion magazines too but I have to say that the picture of Marion Cotillard (she is the most famous French actress after Juliette Binoche) on the current issue of Vogue is mesmerizing and is my inspiration for Fall. In fact since I can't have that Dior velvet jacket I ordered the new velvet schoolboy that I plan to belt like the one she is wearing.

  19. Ema....I'm thinking of getting the velvet school boy jacket too. I'm wondering if I need to size up from my Classic Navy School boy? I bought the linen schoolboy jacket and found one size up felt alot better. Maybe I should order both sizes? Geez...I don't know! I wonder if my stores will even get it so I can try it on???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I will let you know when I receive it. I went with my regular coat size (a 2) because velvet is stiffer than the summer fabrics (where I can get away with a 0) and even the wool ones. I don't think stores will get it, it is catalog only.
