J.Crew of Seasons Past: July 2004 & Spring 2005

Fellow JCA Shariyu, from the lovely "viva la beagle" blog, posted the catalogs for both July 2004 and Spring 2005! To see all the images, check out her "JCREW JULY 2004" and "JCREW Summer 2005" posts.

Remember when the catalog covers use to bring a special offer like $20 off an order of $80+? Those were the days! J.Crew still offers special codes in catalogs (but they tend to be mailed to new customers).

Flipping through the pages, it is clear how far J.Crew has come in terms of style. J.Crew definitely is more fashion-forward today with their style guide. But there is still a lot of love for the older catalogs as they feature classic items that stand the test of time. (J.Crew still offers some of those same basic staples today!)

What are your thoughts on these catalogs from the past? Do you enjoy looking through them for outfit inspirations? Do you find these looks classic (like I do) or do you think they are dated?

  1. Love the old Jcrew. I am so bored by most of their offerings nowadays. I usually only find two pieces per season at most the past few years.

  2. Oh my gosh, love the catalog throwbacks!!! Just today I was cleaning out my closet and found 4 or 5 of those tie belts and a tie-themed purse from that 2004 catalog above! (Is 8 years too long to hold on to them? I think so....) Sadly I am finally giving them up to goodwill...but they were a classic!

    1. I have classic clothes in my closet that were my grandmother's. I own every 1 of those tie belts I would never consider giving any of my vintage items away

    2. I completely agree, Genny. It is so hard for me to part with vintage. But I worked at jcrew the past few years and my closet is bursting at the seams. It is always so hard for me to decide what to keep around...

  4. Thank you, Shariyu! It's been difficult to find pre-2007 images from the catalogs online.

Anybody got fall '05 or '06? I'd love to see some REAL fall offerings (tweed, herringbone, argyle, jewel tones) even if I can't buy them. ;)

  6. They are cute images and I always enjoy seeing pictures out of old catalogs. However, there is no way I would wear critter anything or tie belts.

I have worn J Crew for a very long time and I prefer the style of the newer pieces. I do miss the old J Crew quality.

    2. Haha I had the green skirt with the blue whales. I loved it! I'll always remember...I wore it my first day of teaching and during a lesson a boy raised his hand and asked me how many whales I killed to make that skirt.

  7. I think that spring catalog was one of my favorites, I was amazed to see how many items I owned and still wear including a couple of those pretty cotton skirts.

  8. I still have a few things from that season, including the jersey lounge pieces that I always wear on our tropical vacations, a silk tie belt and a tie belt in pinkish cotton madras that I just wore in June. You can see it HERE, scroll down to the colorblock outfit.

I have been seeing more and more of the longer-style belts that are wrapped around with the end hanging down behind the belt like I am wearing it there and a few people asked me specifically about the belt. I bring it out every summer and still love it.

  9. Still wear my tie belts, still love my tie belts. I have a burgundy one with teeny hunting dogs and pheasants on it that comes out every autumn along with my Thomas Mason tweeds :)

  10. Love to look at these old catalogs. Is it just me or are these images prettier, more fun and just all around more pleasant to look at? (Not that some of the styles are a leetle to preppy for my taste today) Jcrew's 770 blog had an old '89 catalog cover and the picture was a really great image of a swoon worthy polka dot dress, and the whole feel was just happier.

Also does anyone also remember that Rebecca Romijn modeled for Jcrew for a couple of catalogs? I remember a picture of her in denim peddle pushers and a spaghetti strapped white sweater on a hill side or am I just thinking that looked like her?

    1. I guess I should have clarified that the possible Rebecca Romijn catalogs were really long ago.

  11. This post prompted me to swing by ebay for fun: lots and lots of old J Crew catalogs available, including the one from 1998 with Katie Holmes and the rest of the Dawson's Creek crew for (I am not joking) $150!!
