JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Does anyone have any ideas on a few different ways to wear the Denim Western Shirt? Also, what is the difference between that and the Western Denim Shirt?!

    1. ooh, I love this shirt! you can pair it with jeans in a slightly different colour of denim, or coloured jeans if you have them (check madewell, I think they have some skinnies on sale now :). You could also wear it under a jackie pullover or heavier weight tippi with dress pants on a cool, casual workday. If you are really daring, a bright maxi skirt could also be really cool with the shirt tucked in! And, finally, you could wear it open over a silk cami with khaki shorts... I'm thinking this in sandalwood (http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/shirtsandtops/sleeveless/PRDOVR~21421/21421.jsp) with these in shadow (http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/shorts/chinocotton/PRDOVR~82043/82043.jsp).

    2. that's such a fun shirt!! i'd wear it like a chambray shirt (just that it's got fun pockets!! :P) like alyssa, sky's the limit with either casual or more work: shorts, cafe capris or minnies.. even a no. 2 pencil skirt - i hope it's ok reference my blog, but i wore a western shirt (zara) with the neon pink no. 2 double serge cotton skirt for a casual friday at work and i really liked the combo.

    3. Aside from many pencil skirts, I would pair it with leopard print, snake print, you name it.

    4. I would paire it with a bright skirt any shape would be cute with it. Pencil for a casual office look or a skater skirt for a flirty look. Bold print skinniest like the cafe capris would be adorns too.

Sometimes a large piece of jewelry helps me perk up a lone wardrobe item.

  6. The v neck on the Director dress is too low on me to be work appropriate. A cami looks odd (at least on me). Scarves are ok. Has anyone found an interesting alternative?

OT. The GAPFRIENDS promo is continuing through Sunday. 30% off your entire purchase online and at the B&M. Also some BR stores are holding a fall event tonight - no gifts just refreshments and 25% off FP. I haven't tried it yet, but BRUPGRADE should get you 25% off FP including new arrivals.

  9. OT, but can any petite JCAs comment as to how the icon trench fit? I am afraid the sleeves might be too long, and if that's the case, is it any easy alteration? TIA

    1. I'm 5'2 and the icon trench fits (XS) fits me perfectly. I have long arms so I did not need the sleeves to be altered. You can have J. Crew alter it for you for free if the item is FP. If the item is on sale, then there would be a fee. My store charges $12 for a hem.

    2. thanks Wendy. I guess you're talking about the factory trench. I was interested in the retail version. Have you tried that one? Unfortunately, I don't have a store near me, and your help is most appreciated. I take a 4 in schoolboys, sp I assume a 4 in icon?

    3. I was talking about the retail one. I am not busty at all but I take a 2 in the schoolboy blazer, so depends on how you want it to fit. Also, think about if you are going to wear a sweater underneath it the trench or something thinner. The rule of thumb (most of the time) is to size up when you are buying outerwear. But it really depends on your preference. Let me know if you have any more questions. HTH! ;-)

  10. I was told in-store and I think I read on here that people are styling the Lucille dress in cotton-silk faille with a white shirt. Does anyone have an opinion on this or a picture? Is this a button down shirt - perfect shirt? Thanks for your help!

    1. like the post above, i'd wear that dress with a lace tee with the sleeves peeking out, or a coloured 3/4 sleeve to give it some interesting detail.

you also can't go wrong with a cardi and a coloured belt wrapped around the waist. xox P

  12. What would you pair with the No. 2 pencil skirt in Herringbone in Manor Purple? What about the abstract floral pencil? Has anyone tried or reviewd the latter?

    1. starrflyr13, I have photos of both skirts on my blog. Just do a search for either. Abstract floral skirt goes with a lot of colours. The herringbone one goes with the new shirt in Liberty print quite well. HTH

    2. Thanks for the tip! Maybe I should've mentioned the Collection Abstract Floral Pencil Skirt in Mineral Green. Is that the same one you are referring to?

    3. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the cotton version. It depends on your skin colouring. For example, I couldn't pick that lime green from the colour palette of the skirt to wear in a top because I look terrible in that green. I tried the skirt on in the store with the lace tank in the buff colour (item 91863). I will have a pic of them later tomorrow or Saturday on my blog.

I would pick a colour that's in the skirt but one that is not overwhelming and wear a top in it. So for example, I wouldn't wear a teal-coloured top because that's a lot of teal together and seems too matchy-matchy. Hope I am making sense.

  15. First time here :) quick question on the Jackie Pullover. I want to buy it while the sale but cant decide what size. I typically wear a Small in the Tippi. My upper body is slender but lower body - diff zip code. anyhow, Ive read that the jacki pullover runs quite a bit smaller than the Tippi --any suggestions? Tops are usually 6/8, dresses are 8...thanks
