J.Crew Email: 30% off all outerwear + FREE SHIPPING

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Dina, Tiffany Rose, Marietta, as well as Green_Dino (in this post), who let us know the following offers.

J.Crew is offering 30% off all outerwear for Men (click here to shop online) and Women (click here to shop online). This offer is available both online and in brick & mortar (B&M) stores. This offer ends this Wednesday, 12/9/09.

J.Crew is also offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code WINTER. This offer expires 12/9/09. :)

Lastly, the sale section (click here to shop) had a nice update this morning. Of course that would happen the day after the 25% off promotion ends. ;)

Will you be taking advantage of either promotion? If so, what items are you planning to get? If not, why (waiting for a better promotion)?

  1. I haven't really needed a winter coat because it has been unseasonably warm here up until last Friday. However, I have to say that I think the wool duffle coat is one of the best they've offered in years. It is heavy! It is lined in Thinsulate (something I can't believe that they didn't advertise) and actually has one of those chains above the interior tag so that it can be hung up without ripping the tag out. I don't think that any of my other JC coats from past years had that. The design is cute too, and reminds me of JC circa 2005 - I love the removable hood, and the collar is just big enough without being too over-the-top for me. I'd say it's warmer than the stadium-cloth Friday coat that I tried. Just my $0.02 - JC hit the nail on the head with this one!

  2. Does anyone know if the outerwear is online only or is it also being offered on the stores?

  3. I meant the outerwear discount :-)

  4. Ugh. I just ordered two coats for myself and my husband yesterday! I wonder if I can get a price adjustment of some kind. and I paid shipping too!

  5. Scored myself the Winnie in butternut. Really happy that I waited.

  6. Okay, I just called customer service and I wasn't expecting any miracles but basically, if I had ordered today, instead of yesterday, I would have gotten 30% off on my two coats + free shipping instead of 25% off with no free shipping.

Somehow the CSR had a hard time grasping that and kept saying that I wouldn't have saved $100 yesterday if I ordered today. Apparently, you can't cancel orders more than an hour after you place them so even if I tried to cancel, I would still be out the shipping costs. Lesson learned--never pay for shipping!

Anyways, the best offer the CSR could make was to make a price adjustment on my sherpa puffer jacket which was about $8. Note: she definitely didn't want to do it and said "I'm doing this as a courtesy..." at least a dozen times. A little odd. She made it seem like SHE was giving me the $8 credit from her own wallet or something.

Anyways, I can't wait to get my puffer. I got it in antique stone. I usually get a puffer every winter in Ivory but they get dirty so fast so I'm looking forward to the antique stone. It looks so pretty.

  7. lynnq76, I just got the email and it says online and in stores.

  8. yay this was the promotion i was waiting for! i just ordered the wool duffel coat in bright olive :)

  9. ahrum, if your coats were on sale pre-25% off, then it is possible that you saved more than with the 30% off (which comes off the regular price, not the sale price), even with the free shipping.

  10. ahrum,

I have been in your situation before. It is hard to know when to order to get the best deal but you are right...never pay for shipping is a lesson I learned and learned:)That is what several of the posts mentioned about the last 25% off promo...not that great when you have to pay for shipping esp. if the items don't fit/work then you are just out the money!

  11. I actually got a better deal on the soft dove puffer jacket yesterday with the sale + 25% off. I was panicked this morning when I saw the new deal, but whew, it wasn't better.

I suggest to all of you, get an online PS to deal with, they consistently offer courtesies. Especially when they know you are a loyal shopper.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ahrum, I just had a similar experience. I ordered a coat a few days ago, and now that same coat is marked down again and there's fs. The cs was nice, but initially told me they couldn't do an adjustment on sale items. The item won't ship for a while, and currently isn't even available in my size (or I would have simply re-ordered today), so she ultimately adjusted it to 25% off today's price (not sure if I'm still paying shipping, though) as a one-time courtesy.

I've never called before and I just about never make returns, so I figured they owed me this one :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. cdp,
I have found the exact opposite with the online PS. They are very strict and follow JC guidelines. My friends have had the same experience with their two online PS so it is often better we have found just to call the CS line and take a chance.

Good to share all our various experiences though.

  14. I've been eying that duffle coat for a whole, so I really appreciate your $.02, silver_lining! Any chance you can comment on the sizing. I'm just between a small and medium (most consistently a small) in JCrew tops, and would like a little room for sweaters and the such under my coat. Would you recommend I size up to a medium or do you think I'll be OK with a small? Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Chelsea, I found the duffle coat to be TTS and a little bit A-line. It was definitely not as narrow in the shoulders (or as A-line) as the Friday coat that I tried. I am typically a 2/4 in JC tops and found the size 2 duffle coat to be just perfect with a midweight sweater. If I wore more blazers underneath I would've sized up to a 4. Hope this helps!

  16. Two coats I ordered yesterday - the university coat for men and sherpa puffer coat - were both regular price and I got "suckered" into using the 25% off coupon code. (too many last day for sale emails! :)) So I would have saved about $30 (shipping + price of coats) had I ordered today. Not to belabor the point but I swear, I think one of the reasons I shop at JC is to hunt for the best deals!

Honestly, I shouldn't be shopping this much anyways but I knew that I could come here and vent about JC w/o people looking at me like I'm crazy! :)

I haven't used a PS yet but I've been curious about them. I call customer service ALL the time. They probably don't like it that I call so often. :) But it really is kind of a crapshoot what kind of CS you get bc they all use the "as a one-time courtesy..." line, which leads me to believe that they have some amount of discretion. But I could be wrong.

I figure I'm a pretty loyal customer and shop often enough so I don't feel so bad asking for "reasonable" price adjustments.

    ReplyDelete
  17. cdp, just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your jacket?

ahrum, yes, that is really annoying!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just ordered the boulevard trench, because I was waiting for a markdown. Now I must stop until at least after xmas! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I do wish the Friday coat wasn't backordered until January. I live in fear that I'll end up getting a canceled order email in a few weeks when all the other coats are picked over and no longer available in my size.

Not that I can afford/justify buying another coat right now, but I was excited to see the mint green tweed and boulevard trench on sale. I hope someone else scores these :)

  20. I don't need more coats so I'll be passing on this sale. However, we had some cooler weather over the weekend here in NY, so I finally got a chance to try out my new short chalet shearling boots. I really like them, but I think I should get some waterproofing spray for suede. Has anyone worn theirs in the snow?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I resisted the 25% only to be won over by this! Amazing what free shipping will inspire me to do, lol. I got the wool ruffle front coat in camel, fiiiinally! I hope it doesn't look lame next season :P

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm so tempted to order the long puffer. It's been so cold in the PNW!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You know, I stayed up late last night (I'm CST) to see what new sale would pop up when the 25% off sale ended (EST), and there was a small window when both the 30% off outerwear was active, and I was able to use the GIFTS promo...

Unfortunately I didn't buy anything, but it seems like last time the sweater promo and the 20% promo were going on, some people were able to get both promos at the time crossover...I'll have to keep watching out for it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I ordered a coat last week with the 25% off, so I freaked out a bit this morning when I got the 30% email. But I still did better with the other deal. I paid $202 plus $17.50 for shipping for the Carlin coat with Thinsulate. That coat is now $222.60 with free shipping. So I saved a couple bucks with the old deal. If they had done 30% off the sale price, now that would have been a deal!

I will be putting the icon trench on my Christmas wish list.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Geez, shoulda looked at the sizing before asking that question (not S, M, L, but 2, 4, 6). Thanks for the input! I think I'll go with a 6 and see how that feels.

  26. this is an excellent promo for their outerwear. i have never been disappointed with jcrew's coats. sometimes i wait until clearance in jan. but then what i want or my size is no longer avail.

  27. Hi all...does anyone have the long belted puffer jacket? What are thoughts on sizing? did people size down, up, etc? Is it a nice, worth-keeping jacket? Warm? TIA!

  28. Sandra,

I thought about doing that but too tired. What was the time window you noted that the two overlapped? Was it right at the midnight EST/11:00 CST time??? Thanks.

  29. Nonflammable, ITA. JCrew is actually my favorite retailer for coats. I love the cuts, the variety of colors and styles, and the fabrics. This is one area in which I think they really stand apart from other stores.

  30. At first I was a little mad at myself for now waiting, but after calculating discounts I think the additional 25% and no ship was better. I got the Stadium Cloth Friday Coat for $195 as apposed to $227. This would be pretty sweet if it was 30% off additionally.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Genny,

It didn't happen right at 11:00 CST, like I thought it magically would (I was tired and ready to go to bed), but I waited a little longer just to see if it was a new promotion I wanted to use...

I tried a "checkout" at about 11:18 CST and the outerwear was all marked 30% off at that time, the GIFT promo was no longer displayed on the website, but at that time, it still worked.

  32. AppGal-The long puffer jacket is awesome. I'm in NJ (it was 27 this morning) and I found the jacket to be VERY warm. I love the removale hood. I highly recommend purchasing it.

  34. Not only did I get 30% off two coats that i ordered, but I even got the 15% student discount on top of it! I was able to combine both discounts, which was really great. In my experience, you cant do the student discount on-line you can only do it over the phone. so that isnt always good because a lot of these promotionals are online only so you have to weigh the options. also, sometimes you can combine the student discount with free shipping (if u get a nice CS person) and sometimes they dont let you. But in this case, I was able to combine it! I ordered teh Stadium-cloth boulevard trench in black and the Double-cloth ingenue coat in spiced wine. i think i got lucky because 2 seconds after ordering the double cloth coat, the item was sold out.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi fixybopixy--how did you combine the two discounts online? Or did you do it in-store? Enjoy your new purchases! I love both of those coats.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I visited a B&M last week that had the same promo. I got the 30% plus my teacher discount, so the Harbor Pea Coat was a wonderful deal. Plus, free alteration, shortening the sleeves, because of my JC card.

I got the one with Thinsulate, which was really thin and quite warm (I hope).

That aside, I'm going to use the old catalogs for inspiration about outfits, rather than new shopping for a while!

    ReplyDelete
  37. fixybopixy & Maya: You CAN get your student/teacher discount online. Just email CS from your school account asking them to apply your discount to whatever order # it is. They apply the discount retroactively. HTH!

Tracey: Thanks so much! I am definitely eyeing it with a passion, and might have sent off the link to my mom for Christmas gift ideas :) The removable hood idea is brilliant.

  41. AppGal and others,

I did email CS and ask for the educator's discount on a promo item. I was told that the discount only applies to full priced and not promo items and it does state this on the website HELP page. Also in another recent post someone else emailed CS and got the same response.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Genny: Thanks for the clarification! :) I didn't mean that the teacher/student discount could be applied to this promo. Just wanted to inform those who didn't know that you CAN get the discount online; it doesn't HAVE to be an in-store only discount.

    ReplyDelete
  43. AppGal - I tried on a medium in the store and it was huge. I was wearing a lightweight sweater that day (14 gauge). If I order I think I'll get a small, which floors me. I am usually a 6 in number tops but I prefer mediums in tshirts and sweaters.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Maya - i made the purchase over the phone, not instore or online

Genny - how did i get lucky exactly? i assume u mean that u r not supposed to be able to combine student discount with any other promotionals, is that what u meant?

Appgal - thanks for the heads up that i can email jcrew from my student account and have the discount applied retroactively but i think im one of those ppl who needs immediate gratification and i want to see the credit right away in the order confirmation, i dont like have to check back for a credit and make sure it was indeed applied

i order from jcrew constantly and in my experience, acting like you deserve the discount gets the CS to apply it, as opposed to saying "does it apply?" if u ask if u can apply teh stduent discount, they say no, but if u say "id liek to apply it and i also want free sheeping" and u act more authoritative they r less likely to turn u down. could just be my perception tho....

  45. Any Icon Trench owners out there? Especially ones over 5'-7"? How do you like the proportions? If any Icon Trench owner would be willing to measure the extra hem fabric, I would be so grateful. It looks to be about 2" in the online photos. TIA!!

  46. fixybopixy,

I have tried both approaches in the past but now that I know what the official word is...no educator/student discount on promo items I don't ask anymore.

  48. I ordered a houndstooth coat from Modcloth and received it recently. It was cheap looking and it smelled really bad. The cut did not fit right at all. It was $85 and free shipping. Returning soon since I would rather use that $85 towards a good quality coat from J. Crew. You get what you pay for...lessoned learned again.

  49. Hi all,
    I need some advice...
I am really disappointed with Jcrew bridal department. I placed an order last Thursday December 3, at 9:30AM eastern time for overnight delivery. Friday, at 12:45PM I received the first part of the order which included 4 boxer shorts. I immediately called JCrew to find out where the wedding gown was. The lady told me not to worry and that it would there that afternoon. Four hours later I called again because it didn't arrive. The lady who answered told me that it wasn't scheduled to arrive until Monday, December 7th and transferred me to Allen in the Wedding specialist department. He apologized and refunded the shipping and also gave me a promotional gift card for $40 and let me know that my order would arrive on December 7. I had my sister and mother in town this past weekend to see the dress, but unfortunately we sat there all Friday afternoon waiting for a dress that never arrived.

At 3:00PM today I still haven’t received the dress and decided to call the Jcrew 800 to track the shipment and I am now told the order won't be arriving till tomorrow or possibly the 9th because it wasn't sent OVERNIGHT!!!! I don't understand how something like this could happen and have two people (one being from the wedding specialist dept) tell me that the dress was shipped overnight and that I would definitely receive it Monday when in fact that is not the case. I purchased all 6 of my bridesmaid dresses and even their shoes through Jcrew and was already disappointed when my local store wouldn't order the wedding dress for me to try on in the store and now when I pay for overnight shipping I don't even receive the item! What kind of service is this? I’ve heard several excuses, but I am seriously disappointed in Jcrew.

    Maria

  50. I have a question and hope someone can help me. Now, since this this is just a promotion, does that mean I still have to pay shipping over the red phone. Does this make sense? I'm looking into getting the field jacket, and the item itself is not on sale but the price is reflecting the promotion. I would think that I wouldn't be charged for shipping, but I may be wrong. Please help! Thanks!

  51. This might be an appropriate question for this thread. I bought an Ivory Plaza coat from last year back in August. Today is the first day I wore it, and I've already spilled coffee on it! It came out pretty easily with a wet papertowel. I emailed J Crew asking what they recommended as far as stain-proofing, scotchguard, etc. They replied saying they didn't recommend anything (covering their butt, or I really shouldn't use anything?) and told me to contact my tailor. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations on this? Thanks in advance...

  52. OT - stopped by B&M to check out new arrivals this afternoon. There are lots of fun tees ($29.50 to $49.50), some new colors in the falling ruffles tank ($29.50), a great new v-neck merino cardigan with little pockets ($89.50). Didn't have a lot of time, but if you are a fan of J Crew's t-shirts, definitely check it out.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Momoberry - If the price ends in .99, jcrew.com will want to charge you shipping. Your best bet is to link up with an SA who can help you place an online order. Ask them to request free shipping for you, esp if you are going in specifically to place the order. Jcrew.com still may not want to waive the shipping on items that end in .99, but I believe the SA can make a request. Good luck! ;-) Not that you'll need it...just sayin.

  54. OldSchoolCrew -
I have the Icon Trench and love it. Not over 5'7" though ( 2 inches shorter), but wore it with heels so check my blog to see RL pics for an ideas. I wore it to Vegas in March, so you might scroll down there- the search bar on my blog has not been working properly for awhile. Mine is sz 4 and fits TTS.

  55. I was online last night at about midnight EST, and not ALL outerwear was on sale yet-- in particular, I've had my eye on the duffle coat, which I, like silver_lining above, LOOOOVE. There seemed to be half of the coats marked and half unmarked with the 30%.

I'm waiting on January for a major coat sale; I love J. Crew for their coats but can wait on the duffle.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ahrum - I'm late chiming in, but your other option is to place the order again with the better discount, and then when your first order arrives, refuse it and have UPS mark it as return to sender. If you haven't accepted the package, when they get it back, they'll refund the entire cost, including shipping. I learned this from another company years ago, and it worked for me once with JC when they were being jerky bout a 24-hour price adjustment.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Urgh, just got my shipment from the 25% sale and one item was the wrong color (now its sold out of course).

Why does Jcrew struggle with things other retailers figured out a long time ago? CS refunded my shipping (had to ask for it though, felt like they should have offered) and is doing a find for me, even though its a sale item.

Also, Maria, that is really unfortunate. I hope the dress works out though, but you're certainly justified to be annoyed, it is really unacceptable, especially with bridal.

  58. Hi all... I just ordered the boyfriend fatigue jacket and a sweater for the hubby. I am holding myself back for the other outerwear and also hoping for a % off everything soon...need that kind of discount to order tees and tops, denim,a bag..

    ReplyDelete
  59. fixybopixy, if you email CS as soon as you place the order, then the price is adjusted on the order, not a refund that comes later. I've done that on 2 recent orders, and the price reflected my discount on the order. HTH

  60. Slastena, Thank you for your comments on the Icon Trench. I appreciated your outdoor shots of it, as I could really see the true color. I couldn't resist getting it for 208.00, although I really liked the black one too and wanted both. I got the Khaki, and I hope it works for me. OSC

  61. Old School Crew, I am 5'19" and bought the icon trench. I regret it. The material and style are wonderful, but the sleeves are too short, as usual. I mean, it is certainly wearable, but it is really annoying when the sleeves of my shirts/sweaters constantly stick out. Extra fabric at hem on size 6 is 1.5". I hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Em, Thanks for your comments. You and I are similar in height and size. I am sad to hear this. You would think something labeled 'Icon' would be offered in tall, standard, and petite. Most of the people that say that it's "perfect" are in the 5'-2"-5'-6" range. I'd love a Burberry, (the 995.00 one) as it's 40" long, which is just right for me, but cannot swing that right now. Plus, I actually like the Icon's styling better. I will have a tailor look at it to determine how much length can be squeezed out of, arms and bottom hem both. Thanks for measuring it for me! OSC

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anytime! Yeah, I was surprised they didn't offer it in tall. There is alot of stuff they offer in petites but not tall... I don't get it. I think I will take mine to a tailor, too... the short arms thing really bothers me! I mean, I don't consider 5'9" to be that tall but the talls definitely fit me way better than regulars.

Except for in some jackets. The lexington jacket from 2007 has perfectly long arms and fits great. Weird!

Also, I got the stadium cloth boulevard trench in the pretty purple color. Getting it from my mom this weekend, can't wait to try it on!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thanks for the comments on the Icon trench. I've been eyeing it for months and just might have to pull the trigger with this promo. Any other comments from Icon owners on fit? I'm 5'6" and woefully short waisted. I have a feeling the 4 will be a little too small and the 6 a little too big. I haven't had any luck finding it in the store (in any color) to try it on for size.
