JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. This Saturday we have our first holiday party of the season.

My friend calls for “festive attire” and in previous years I’ve worn:
-My favorite distressed denim with a cream fair isle, oversized red plaid scarf and red patent block heel pumps
-Madewell metallic wide leg crops, embellished velvet ankle strap pumps with heels and a fitted merino turtleneck

I haven’t bought anything “new” this holiday season. 😂 well except for some black sweaters so that doesn’t count.

I may end up wearing my usual leather pants, a black sweater and the Stewart plaid flats with black beaded bow from last year. The metallic pants were considered fairly out there for this crowd 😂 and one woman, a girlfriend of one of the guests, wore a fitted red dress and she and I had a long discussion about festive attire. I love specifying that because it’s open to interpretation, but some people just don’t dress up much or enjoy having fun with it as we do.

So now that the holiday parties are starting, what is everyone wearing?

    1. For Thanksgiving I wore the collection hand-beaded mini skirt with tall black boots and a black tneck bodysuit - 100% JCrew. The hubs is still talking about it. Small but highly valued fan club. Yesterday I wore the red patent cap toe boots to work with the plaid wide leg cropped jeans, a red long sleeve perfect T, red plaid scarf Ive had since high school and a navy Schoolboy with gold buttons. I suspect I will get a lot of wear on the sequin skirt and I also have a collection velvet blazer in a gold/chartreuse that I like with a perfect shirt that has rhinestone flowers sewn all over the front. I say festive is sparkly, lacy, furry, plaid, velvet or all of the above.

    2. I’m running into the same problem Suz. After a job change, the holiday party season will be different this year than previous. I have no idea what to wear this time since it may be more casual than the cocktail dresses that usually wear. I was thinking about the red silk jungle cat shirt and wide leg pants but I don’t know if that is too casual. I also don’t really want to wear that for holiday because the rest of the year I’ll be thinking of it is a holiday only item. I have a nice wrap tweed jacket that has matte gold in the weave that might work with black pants and statement earrings. I just need to get in that closet and figure out something by Saturday!

    3. ShoppingCellE that reminds me I also have an old collection blazer. It’s shorter and tulip shaped but has a silver metallic thread in the tweed. Over the years I’ve worn that with a skirt or even jeans, so I can always break that or my velvet blazer out as well. Both say festive without screaming it.
As long as I’m put together With a little extra sparkle or something fun, to be more festive, I don’t need a ton of embellishment.

I love the idea of the red cat pants and top. I don’t see it as casual really at all! I mean sure it can be dressed down but it’s totally a pulled together look.

PBanos, that skirt works so well for the season without being too over the top red and green. Glad you’re getting use out of it.

    4. I'm throwing a big holiday party this weekend and am planning to wear a black jumpsuit from Banana Republic or an emerald green mixed media midi dress from Loft (or, LOL, one of the sleeveless plaid cotton poplin ruffle neck tops from last year JC with black pants)

  2. I have purchased several items from Jcrew this year to wear to my holiday themed parties & brunches. Here is what I'll be wearing: 1)the Cheerful Fair Isle Mockneck Sweater and matching Sweater Skirt which I'll pair with tights and the Etta Studded Plaid Pumps (really old) or boots if there is snow. 2) For our fanciest party I'll wear the Red Peyton Pull on Lace Pants which I'll pair with the Sleeveless Mockneck top in Stewart Tartan (I'll put a black turtleneck underneath) and the coordinating Stewart Tartan Pom-Pom pumps from this year. 3) the New Stewart Tartan Wide Leg Wool Pants with an Ivory Sweater with a black black bow that I purchased last year 4)the Red Tartan pants (from last year) with the tan tippi with lace collar trim and Tartan Lucie Pumps with Star (Shoes are from 2 years ago I think) and lastly 5) the New Black Merino Sweater with Tartan Scarf Tie with the Black A-Line Midi Sweater Skirt with Ivory Piping from last year and Plaid Heels or tall black boots. Now on to plan a New Years Eve outfit!

    1. Sounds like you’re set! I also have bright cerise lace pull on pants but for me they only work with limited shirts, really just my satin tipped pajama shirt or a white button down.

    2. The lace pants & satin pj shirt sounds fun! Have you already worn that outfit around this group of friends? Perhaps you can mix in a different pair of shoes or a blazer or scarf to make it a little different if you already have.

    3. I have not worn it with this specific group. The only issue is the shirt needs to be tied at the waist to work with the pants and that leaves a little belly exposed which I may not want this time of year. Not sure if any of my blazers would work with it, although perhaps the black velvet? That orangey red can be difficult against black which is prob why I have only worn that specific outfit in warmer weather. I have worn my red patent Sophia pumps with it both times. I can try the plaid flats with black bow but the reds are different and it feels a little busy.

    4. Well whatever you decide make sure to post photos and remember that you'll feel best in something that you are comfortable wearing and most of all have a fun time!

    5. Agreed! We just got back from vacation so everything feels a little tight, lol. I’ll prob end up in all black as usual and add a pair of sparkly shoes. I’ll have to see which Pants feel comfortable on Saturday. 😂

  3. Reporting back. Of course no photos were taken because we were rushing after we had an unexpected visitor and I kind of decided what to wear on a whim.

I went with my J.crew full length wide leg wool pleated pants from a few winters ago, chunky Everlane wool turtleneck in black over thomas Mason Stewart plaid button down (only the cuffs showed), Sophia sequin pumps, some older JCREW long earrings that have some sparkle and a deep red rose and I wore a deep red lipstick. The sparkle of the shoes and earrings made it a little more festive. I was pleased!

As expected the attire ranged from a few women going all out with dresses one could wear to a wedding or black tie event to basic and not at all festive. I was happy to be somewhere in the middle.
