"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. It would be nice for J Crew to fix the website so it doesn't go to random countries when I click to get onto the site.

    1. Thank you! This has been happening for weeks! I thought it was me, lol.

    2. Hi Suzy. It's been happening since summer or even earlier. Prob is it says out of stock in a size, for that country. But it's still avail for us in the US. I have to change countries, then redo a search for the product. Small pita. Definitely a time waster.

    3. A little off the point but the reason for instock/out of stock discrepancy I believe is: international orders ship from the warehouse only, domestic orders ship from stores as well.

  2. That annoyed feeling you get when you start to notice that your J Crew wool fair isle camp socks from last year are starting to unravel at the top after pretty minimal wear 😢

  3. When they take 7 days to tell you your Stadium-cloth majesty peacoat is sold out in your size....

  4. Good morning! Has anyone tried the military faux fur Melton coat? I'm wondering why it is at the price it is. I have no experience with Melton coats, only stadium and down coats. Thank you.

    1. Lol, yet they act like free shipping is some prize.

    2. i ordered 6 things. i'm getting 5 packages... the biggest kicker is that a pair of tights (something i just threw in for myself) is being shipped by itself!

      Delete
    3. Now their using new packing tape to seal the boxes with cute little sayings like "think inside the box, etc. Whatever J.Crew, you apparently need to think back outside the box and ship everything in one package in a timely manner.

      Delete
    4. Ugh, yes!! I get my packages delivered to my job (shipping to my apartment is a great hassle trying to track down delivery) and I had to explain this to the guys in the mailroom - didn't want them to think I was a shopaholic!

    1. SO true. I have a cashmere sweater that looks like new and I just checked the tag - it's from 2007! The ones I have last year all have that fuzz under the arms and where the seat belt crosses the chest.

    3. Thanks FAF. I'm going to give it a try!

    4. Their cashmere has gotten so bad that I won't buy it at any price anymore. I had J Crew cashmere sweaters purchased years ago that looked better than new JC sweaters worn only a couple of times. Sad.

  7. Factory Early Access new arrivals today - here's my gripe... WHY so many shorts? It's December, for cripes sake.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought the same thing! There's more shorts than any winter appropriate clothing!

      Delete
    2. I always think about the fact that the designers are in NYC and it gets super cold there - do they wear shorts on a daily basis? Or how about all those cropped pants? I'm in Atlanta and I won't wear either of those until Spring!

      Delete
    3. It's part of Resort wear...for people who goes on vacation someplace warm during winter. Every designer makes a mini resort collection.

      Delete
    4. But for Factory? Is that really the demographic shopping at JCrew Factory?

      Delete
    5. ^^Exactly what I was thinking, Jessica. I would imagine most Factory shoppers (such as myself) are looking for winter clothes, seeing as how it's not even officially winter yet, instead of shorts for a tropical vay-cay that I will not be going on this year. :)

  9. Purchasing 4 sweaters from the last rollout and only being able to keep one because the others are too short. Or at least offer the more cropped styles in tall sizes. (Midwest winters are cold - I don't need extra skin exposure!)

    1. I'm returning two knit tops for the same reason. Almost all of the novelty tees are so, so short and boxy. That is probably why they go from release to clearance in two weeks. Enough with the cropped tops, J Crew!

    1. I recently moved from the east coast to the west and I'm feeling your pain. I ordered a belt for my husband and it took over a week to arrive.

      Delete
    2. I feel your pain, too. I placed an order last Friday, and it isn't due to arrive until next Tuesday. It feels like it takes an eternity to get deliveries from J.Crew and Madewell out here.

      Delete
    3. My last order took almost two weeks. I used to get my JC items in 2 or 3 days.

      Delete
    4. Native San Franciscan here! I feel your pain ladies. Ordered last week from Madewell. And I won't get my Penfield flannel till next Tuesday. :-(

    5. When JCrew ships Sure Post I actually intercept my items from the Post Office just to get them a bit earlier.

      Delete
    6. Jessica, I'm curious as to how you do that? I would like to be able to occasionally.

      Delete
    7. If you follow your tracking you can pick your item up from the Post Office as soon as it's transferred. You don't have to wait for your PO to deliver it. I realized this when I tried to ask UPS if I could pick it up from them and they said no, only if I paid to upgrade my shipping. Of course, I was not going to pay them to pick up a package, that is ridiculous. USPS does need some time to sort the packages they get from UPS, but they usually have them sorted in a 2-3 hours (unlike UPS that leaves items on trucks from entire days). I leave work 30 minutes early and get my things.

      Delete
    8. Thanks so much for your response! I do usually follow the tracking, I just didn't think of doing that. I'll have to try it next time...

  11. For winter's sake - LINE YOUR WOOL PANTS! I've exhausted myself trying to buy suiting. None of the pants I've ordered were lined - I knew, but tried anyway. They feel cheap and don't lay well without lining. Let alone the fact that they're wool (potential itch factor). And it's cold for the next 4-5 months, that lining would go along way when I'm standing in metro station!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Totally 100% Agree! This is hands down my number one issue with Jcrew right now. If they made lined wool and suiting pants I would be a devoted customer for life.

      Delete
    2. I second the above. All of my lined wool pants have worn out after 10 years or so of careful use. Winter in Boston = lined pants are absolutely necessary.

As a second vent: I am so tired of having to resew all the buttons on my coats, which I really do not have the time for. J. Crew, can you please make them secure the first time around?

      Delete
    3. I live in a warm climate but I too would love them to start lining their wool pants again. They're just so much nicer lined. I'm tall so my pants options are already limited.

      Delete
    4. I have an older pair of JCrew City Fit Wool Pants that are lined and it's heaven. I didn't know what I would be missing or I would have bought a ton of them.

      Delete
    5. I agree! And it's even more annoying that the unlined pants are so freaking expensive.

      Delete
  12. My kitten heel dulcis (glitter ones) are fraying around side of one shoe . I have worn them once for about 3 hours indoors. should I try to return them. they were fairly expensive. C

    1. I vote return! I had a pair of flats that basically fell apart after wearing them for a day and they took them back no problem

      Delete
    2. I agree with Alex. If you are not happy with them and won't get much wear out of them, I would return too. I think they will def take them back.

      Delete
    3. Absolutely. I wore my Gemma Leopard flats twice, outdoors and one shoe developed some weird creasing in the toe area and became unwearable due to the pain. I reordered in store and returned the original pair. If people don't return the defective items, J Crew is off the hook for their quality issues IMHO.

  13. The amount of lint J.Crew's wool pieces attract - I feel like I'm constantly dusting off my black no.2 pencil skirt, regent topcoat and navy schoolboy with a lint roller. Anyone else have this problem?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No kidding! I have six, count 'em six black/dark navy JC pieces bagged up for Goodwill. Couldn't put up with the lint anymore.

      Delete
  14. Dear J Crew....please please start using better quality buttons. I have been changing all your buttons for the last two years now. I do not want white buttons on a dark shirt and I do not want plasticy buttons( the price I would except more) on collection pieces. enough said.

    3. Me, too - have two merino cardigans with black glass buttons. They still look like new. Almost wish I could get into a time machine and travel back to pick up more of the good stuff. :)

  15. Aw, it feels like Festivus in here with the 'airing of the grievances'. Yay!

I guess my vent-slash-hope for 2016 is that JC strives for more accuracy in their online pics and descriptions. As if the blown-out pictures weren't bad enough, the action shots make it hard to really see the item. Also, the descriptions are lacking - how long is that short sweater (and what is "hits at hip")? What is "cotton with stretch"? Why does every pair jeans not look at all like the online pictures?) I think that the majority of my returns this year were because I opened the box and said, "Okay, that doesn't look like what I ordered" (or said that after I tried it on!). If there were more accurate fabric description or accurate measurements, some of the things I probably wouldn't have ordered in the first place.

And another thing...the Collection page this month is hilarious. Almost every image is a potential Drunk J.Crew. The eggnog in the last pic is most definitely spiked!

    1. What should be included in the feats of strength?? I know my strength comes from resisting the temptation to buy because of the percentage off, even when I don't need it, and it's final sale. That's strength!

      Delete
    2. YES to this. It's almost pointless to have model pics because it's so difficult to tell what the item looks like being worn. I live two hours from a store so I depend on the pictures sometimes (especially if it's a new item that hasn't been reviewed yet) to gauge fit. The side-shots of the models with half-tucked sweaters with their hands at their faces... NOT HELPFUL, J Crew!

      Delete
    3. That Collection page has to be a joke. Someone is trolling us. Not just the crazy positions and expressions, but the crazy clothes and styling.

      The wide leg sweatpants.
The extra, extra, extra long sweater dress (sweater-tube).
The sequin car wash skirt with the oversized grandpa sweater.
The pajama skirt with the work skirt (I way overslept, but I had a meeting).

      Delete
    4. Aaaahhh, I actually loved all the Collection pieces in that link except the pajama blue blouse and the swishy fringe maxiskirt. The sad thing is I was head over heels in love with the sequin maxiskirt. In my head, I envisioned the ankle length ball skirts or straight cut ankle holiday skirts from JC's yesteryear. I still pine for a patchwork madras maxiskirt from 7 years ago. However, when I saw the skirt was in fact cut into strips, the love fest abruptly ended. What the what? Car wash skirt indeed. Nonetheless, if I could afford to get numerous full price things from J Crew monthly, I would love most of the Collection pieces this fall.

    5. Silver_lining, love the Seinfeld reference...I was thinking the same thing! I totally agree with you about the website images and vague descriptions of fabric and fit. Lately, I've been calling to ask those questions before ordering but I shouldn't have to.

      Delete
    6. Ball skirts! Maxi skirts! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers, when I opened the catalog, I was afraid I'd hallucinated the glorious past, not remembered.

Well, I'm thankful for price adjustments and for the sympathetic CS rep who knew just how I was feeling when all my sold out items popped back after the promo ended. What an angel.

    7. Thanks for linking to that gem, silver lining-I hadn't seen it. The drunk j crew captions practically write themselves... The bedazzled blazer and car wash skirt-I just can't...

    8. HA! Thanks for posting about the collection page! When I first saw it I thought "god, what are they smoking?"....not only does the model look out of it, the clothes are truly ridiculous. That sequin car wash skirt made me laugh out loud!

  17. Shopping for pants, and my store carries a very limited selection. Another customer was equally frustrated in the dressing room. I've ordered and returned two sizes of about 5 different styles, if not more. Pants should not be final sale. I have four more in my cart and usually my store will take back without issue, but I hate to be known as the client who returns everything.
I also wish they'd automatically credit price adjustments to card holders. Almost every item I've purchased this season and in spring is reduced in price before I even receive it. I feel like such a pain emailing after every single order asking for price adjustments, but it all adds up!
And I feel guilt when I shop in store. The SAs are very helpful but there is such limited stock of what I have in my cart or wish list. And what is there is usually a bit higher priced.

    1. Greetings Suz - 1. See my reply to you for your earlier JCA Reviews comment re: red pants (yay red pants!). 2. I've never purchased from a retailer that offers price adjustments like J.Crew does. The savings definitely make the credit card bill easier to deal with. And if J.Crew offers price adjustments, you have every right as a consumer to ask for one. I had an SA at Lord & Taylor actually yell at me over the phone when I asked for one for a pair of boots that got marked down the day after I ordered them - so made me appreciate JC's patient CS reps. 3) J.Crew sizing can be inconsistent - I have X-Small, Small, and Medium in my closet along with 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 - and pants are tricky. If they don't fit your body or your pant-ly needs, you should be able to return them without grief or guilt so you can find what works for you. Cheers - Jennifer

  18. Saw and responded to your red pant comment. I'm still on the fence! I just hate to have another item that only gets worn once a season.

    1. I feel ya . . . it's your money, so feel free to spend it where you think it will do the most good. I also have the Campbell Capri in Vibrant Flame (Summer 2014) for summer, and they are fun. However, more color makes for more wardrobe planning time :-(. I do wish J.Crew would do away with Final Sale as it discourages those who might want to try an item that they missed in store or wasn't in a store altogether. I believe JC has suspended FS for the holidays the past couple of years, but apparently not this season. Best wishes you on your pant-quest! Cheers - Jennifer

    2. Thx! How would you describe the neon
Flame? On screen it just looks a tiny bit brighter than the dark poppy. Is it like the belvedere red of the regent blazer? Or is it really more neon? I would most likely wear it with a black and white striped tee or chambray. It's not even final sale so perhaps I'll give it a shot.

    3. Hmmm . . . this is hard to tell for me, particularly since I have not been shopping the Patio Pant. I love the "true red" of the Patio Pant in Bi-Stretch Wool in Dark Poppy and the Belvedere Red in other items (man, that's red!). Neon Flame does look lighter, but I can't tell if it's an orangey-red (search Vibrant Flame on JC website), pinky-red (search Neon Watermelon), or just a lighter red (search Electric Red). On the other hand, what I think is orangey-red, someone else may think is true red (to each their own, color-wise). You may want to give a JC store a call or contact Customer Service and get a Very Personal Stylist's opinion. It's hard to tell sometimes from a web photos, and you may just need to place an order to see if you like it (and not feel guilty about returning it if you don't). Yay, no FS!

  20. Boo J Crew computer system! I have ordered twice, on pop back, and received twice the dreaded, wish we had enough email. Last week the SA ordered me the black double notch mini in black and then customer service informed me that yes they have one and they'd deliver it with one day shipping yesterday morning. Guess not. The universe is telling me that it's not meant to be.

    1. Just got off the phone with CS. My size pop backed and so I called quickly on the double notch mini in black. Super nice CS rep. I'm not taking any bets on whether my skirt ships or not. Just have that sinking feeling. J Crew it's time to update your computer system.

    2. My experience has been, a pop-back is more likely to be available if it is supposed to be shipped from the distribution center rather than a retail store. It seems the retail inventory is far from accurate.

      Delete
    3. Well I know there a black ones in my store, so I'm crossing my fingers for you. It's such a cute skirt. It's the first white bottom I've bought in a while. I was really happy it came back in a petite because it's a very long "mini".

  21. I placed an order on Sunday - coat, pants, and a random sale umbrella. Umbrella has shipped, no sign of the coat and pants. I'm pretty sure those items are going to be all "wish we had enough" and never to be found. Ugh.

Get your inventory systems in line.

  23. The website says they don't do price adjustments on sale items? Has anyone had a different experience?

    1. I basically only purchase sale items and get price adjustments frequently. Sometimes even after the 7-day price adjustment window. I find emailing customer service with my request is the easiest way to do this.

      Delete
    2. I got one the other day on a pair of pants that went from promo to sale. I got a credit back of almost $40.00 and it was past the 7 days. I was on the fence about the pants and the adjustment made me feel better.

      Delete
    3. They stopped doing adjustments for me over 7 days on my third request. Now I order using Discover and use their 90 day price protection. Keep your order emails or you may have to call CS to get them to resend it. Speaking of which, it's annoying J Crew only lets you view your last 4-5 orders in order history without having an order number.

  24. Wow, lots of vents! Interesting to read. I really haven't purchased much from J Crew recently, my fashion spending has gone to other retailers like Uniglo, Everlane, M. Gemi, and something from Nordstrom. J Crew hopefully will ramp up their quality next year and if they do, I'll come back. I'd like to get a new blazer or quality cashmere like they used to make not long ago..

    ReplyDelete
  25. 81 vents!!! Is this a record? HA! I just came to say that almost everything I'd be remotely interested in is "sold out" Did they just not make enough of stuff or hiding it during sales?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, they come out with things so often it makes sense to not make a ton of anything. They have enough surplus inventory as is. It also increases the demand, when people see the item selling out. IMO things rarely sell out completely. It's just that they sell out initially because people order them, possibly in multiple sizes, and then the return process takes time. I never have issue buying things I want, on sale, I just have to be patient.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. Today I ordered several items on sale that I have wanted to try. One is final sale but I'm hoping it works and if not I hope my store takes it back.

      Delete
    3. Agreed, everything I want is sold out...not just in my size, but completely sold out. I was thinking they they had pulled the items to hide them from the BF/CM promos but I think it's been too long now for them to be hiding them. I do think it is strange that there have been no pop-backs on these items either...I'm checking all hours of the day...and no reviews either. I'm hoping that the returns are just slow because of the holiday crunch. I guess I will continue to stalk the items and hope for the best!

  26. I've gotten the dreaded email...wish we had enough on three items in the last the weeks. Annoying but JCrew had softened the blow. Each time before I've gotten that email I've received an email apology from CS and they've shipped out a 25 dollars gift card. Woohoo...anyone else had this treatment. One of the nicest things that's every happened to me and for it to happen every time an order is canceled is pretty amazing. It's why I'm still a very loyal customer.

    2. I received two $25.00 gift cards as well after receiving the dreaded "we wish we had enough..." e-mail. The curious thing is that I had ordered the same item twice on pop-back and missed it both times. The other day it popped back again and I just got a notice it shipped! This time persistence totally paid off...I'm ahead $50.00 in GC's and I got my item! This is why I keep coming back to JCrew despite all their issues over the last couple of years (quality, sizing, etc).

    3. Fourth time I've gotten the email on the same skirt in a week. Each time I call CS, they're very accommodating but nothing like gift cards. Just overnight shipping for my phantom skirt. 4. Yes, I've gotten 3 gift cards for the same reason; like the "consolation prize." I was able to snag 1 of the items cancelled on a "popback" and I received it today. Used the giftcard to help pay for it. Now hope the other items show up too.

    5. I agree. Pretty regular occurrence for those of us ordering online with any frequency.

    6. Same as Ema, I've never received a gift card for a canceled order, but overall the number of cancelled items I've had is probably <1%.

    7. Regarding the gift card - Birdie, check again. I'm almost 100% sure your email wasn't from CS but from a VPS. I too have received 3cards in the past month and some after the cancellation of the same pop back item. I honestly think that these items are being cancelled in order to fulfill the order of a more important VIP client - JCrew is never that sorry! The gift card I think is to ease their mind of their wrong doing.

  27. Let's see if we can crack 100 vents! Number 1. FINAL SALE NEEDS TO GO AWAY!!!!!! Usually during the holidays, there is no final sale online. Gift givers won't buy if they can't exchange or return. 2. Sweaters for the most part have been dismal the last few years compared to the past. Basics are important but I need a sweater that takes my breath away. 3. Pants are my biggest complaint. Who are they making these pants for? Over the last year, I have purchased pants in sizes 2,4,6 & 8 because the sizing is so inconsistent. Thighs & calves are so tight you can't sit down but somehow the butt is baggy, crotches are wonky, some waists are super tight while others are so big they sag. Give me some gorgeous lined wool pants that are made to fit a woman not a cardboard cutout!

  28. Going for the 100 vents. Violet poppy patio pants languishing on the sale racks at $129.99 cdn. Come on j crew what are you thinking. Fabric is shiny stiff polyester, zero spandex content which makes it tricky to fit and feel comfortable in. Violet poppy print in combination with shiny poly can look frumpy or like low end motel decor bedspread. Take a look at the inventory turn data and reduce the price to clear out the stale sale racks. Fear evergreen floral patio could go the same way, great print, subtly festive bling but if poor fit and no spandex may be a repeat of other pant fails. Sad as I do want to love and buy jcrew offerings.

Also in agreement about final sale - they're going to end up with a lot of stock to go to TJ Maxx by the end of the year!

  32. I'm also waiting for an order from 11/30 to ship. But in GOOD NEWS although today's promo is not as good for sale items, it seems final sale has been lifted. Even on the point sur teddy buckle back jeans which I ordered yesterday at final sale, it doesn't sale final sale on my order.

  33. I'm also waiting for an order from 11/30 to ship....Meanwhile, my other Cyber Monday purchases are starting to arrive. Shameful.

I have a question for anyone who might still be reading this thread. My credit card offers a 'price rewind' feature where you can register your purchase and Citi will search for a lower price for 60 days. Does this work with JCrew? I don't know how it would work with all of their promos/sales. Just curious. I'm interested in a coat but don't want to get burned with the pricing game.

  34. This is a gripe with a bit of a silver lining. I bought the wintress coat three years ago, and it has been a lifesaver in some pretty steely Northeastern winters. I love that it maintains a nice silhouette even though it is a bulkier down coat. That is all thanks to the belt that comes along with it, of course.

Well, lo and behold, I had lost the belt during a recent move. I emailed J. Crew asking if they could send a replacement (preferably free of charge, given the sky high price of their items, but I would have paid a small prices for the replacement). The customer service representative informed me that it was "J. Crew policy" not to send out replacement belts and suggest that I ask a local tailor to fashion a replacement. Out of what, I wonder! It's not as if I have my own supply of down feathers! After some back and forth (which required me to hunt down the date and location of the purchase) they were willing to offer me a gift card. To be honest, I would rather have the belt because I am simply unsure what to do without a replacement, but at least they tried.

I still must say that the initial response irked me. I assumed that part of the J. Crew price tag was the brand, which I associate with professionalism. I am happy to say it was resolved to some satisfaction, but wanted to warn others that you may have to push a little when dealing with the customer service department.

    1. I also lost the belt to my coat and called about a replacement. No luck. Seems like an easy thing for them to offer to replace. I would pay for a new one.

    2. The Boutinierre Blazer arrived without the boutinierre! I called CS and told them what happened. They they will look into it. I thought I would never see this item, but lo and behold, it arrived several weeks later! So, I guess it depends on what they have in extras.

    3. I've never seen this blazer! When is it from? So cute!

    4. @Suz Has--This blazer is an old item circa 2008-2009. It's basically a grey flannel blazer with black trim on the edges and the flaps of the pockets and the finishing touch is a black flower made of ribbon like material pinned on the lapel.

    5. I thought I remembered it from back then! I'm confused! You bought it now or are you recounting a story from then?

    6. @Suz Has--Sorry, I was recounting the story.

  35. A small vent...I wanted to order the Collins Loafer and it was sold out on line. I called my local store to do a stock check. They found a pair in my size in at the Portland, Oregon store. I called them and they checked in the back storeroom. No luck, but my size did pop back the next day and I ordered them. When I finally received the shipped email, where did the shoes ship from? Portland, Oregon! J Crew have a better system in place to have inventory be as current as possible.

  36. Have the orders from 11/30 mentioned above been shipped yet? An order I placed on 12/01 is still in an open status.

  37. Nope! :( glad I wasn't hoping to wear any of the 7 pairs of pants I ordered tonight!

  38. Count me among those who placed an order Nov 30th and still have received nothing.

I used to buy a LOT from J Crew, but I'm sad to say I'm pretty much done with them now. The quality has gotten so terrible, the pictures online are not at all helpful in terms of color or fit accuracy, or sometimes even description (like fiber content.. not to mention, 15% cashmere and 25% wool does not make something a "cashmere-wool blend"). Going to a B&M isn't helpful because they no longer carry classic/basic items in store-- just sheer, neon floral bermuda shorts. Overall, I've just bought one too many shirts with crooked hems, one too many coats whose pockets wear through into a million holes after one year of wear, one too many sweaters that pill after a single day, and too many of these mistakes were final sale. I'm tired of wasting my money and having faith that "things might be better this time".
J Crew's going to have to show up on my lawn with a boom box if they want my business back.
