Sought & Found: Did you visit J.Crew this {past} Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopped by a J.Crew store this past weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store was/ is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

  1. I went to the Sf store for the first time in months and everything looked like the sale section at h&m, horrible fabrics, yet the prices are still really high. I hope the new designer brings back some style and quality, the Anthropologie lady really trashed the brand. The women's section was beyond ugly but we went because my boyfriend needed a ton of a new clothes and he has always gotten great stuff from J Crew but basically the entire men's section was mercantile! He got some Madewell jeans (which they had in store) as they didn't have any J Crew jeans that weren't mercantile. None of the jeans actually felt like denim! We used to get great Japanese selvedge jeans for him at J Crew. Even the branding is nasty now, the J Crew jeans logo. It's weird, the men's section has somehow avoided the tacky Forever 21 devolution of the women's section but it's clear they just can't make quality clothes anymore.

    1. IDG the rationale behind the JCrew/Jeans and JCrew Always tags. They cheapen the brand without any actual cost savings.

    2. I think many of us are rooting for J. Crew to succeed. It's not just the Crew; there are many mid-range brands experiencing similar problems (Gap brands are splitting/changing, etc.). I'm finding fewer and fewer places that are making nice clothes these days. Again, I'm hoping for the Crew to pull through. By the way I don't know that the designs we're seeing now are even necessarily from the Anthro designer.

    3. Americans want cheap clothes - the sales data is very clear. Old Navy and TJX brands are the few doing well in the US, department stores and mid tier brands are permanently devalued.

J Crew is one of many mid brands where quality has declined, and market forces suggest its a permanent shift. The complaints are louder at J Crew because it was probably the most elevated brand in this tier in terms of quality and design. The design has the potential of returning; the quality, no. Cheap is growing and at the other end of the spectrum, luxury/designer will always have its niche. I agree w Panda - I don’t know where to shop anymore.

    4. Well said, Ruffles. So many of the mid-tier brands are just shadows of their former selves. While I was reading up on the demise of Cone denim last week, I started to understand the timeline of declining quality across the board in the garment industry. Clothes have never been cheaper — I think I pay about the same now as I did 20 years ago (if not less) for many items, but the only way to maintain those prices over that period of time is to cut quality. I agree that the quality is unlikely to return at J.Crew.

    5. shopgrrrl - I had no idea that Cone Denim had closed its White Oak plant. How sad. I bought a couple of pairs of Cone Denim jeans when Gap and Banana Republic had special collections made with their denim. I always loved the fabric.

    6. I didn’t know either until I bought my Lucky Brand jeans and looked them up. It really is too bad.

    1. I don't wear them, but that really does make me smile for some reason.

  3. Any views/thoughts on the hammered satin top in painter print L1755?

I went to do some returns and ended up going home with it. (The same sad old story.) When I first tried it on, I felt like I was in a maternity top, but when I tucked in the front a little, the top seemed to magically transform.

I wish there were more printed tops like this.

Some JCAs will find the fact that it's polyester a big turn-off. But I am willing to live with polyester in exchange for the machine washability
The top seems like it would be incredibly versatile, but now that I have it at home, I will have to see how it works with my blazers

Alison Gary of Wardrobe Oxygen featured the top in a blog post

  4. How did people do with "buy less February"? I was actually very happy with my results. I bought the lady jacket in multicolor metallic tweed (in black), a Parke blazer and a couple of white T's. For the minimalist JCAs this may seem like an excessive amount, but given the large number of purchases in the heavy discount months of November, December and January, this seemed like a (minor) victory.

I even forced myself to return a couple of duplicate items that I was originally going to keep because they were so cheap, they were almost free. It was hard I have to say.

    1. I was failed NSF but succeeded with Buy Less February - yay? I got the Abigail Borg silk tanks and skirts, a pair of heels, a tee, and a scarf. I returned a merino wool Tippi popback. One of my leanest months - everything has already been worn and washed since purchased.

    2. I bought about $250 ( about half was from the crew red line sales) worth but sold more from my poshmark closet. One of the items I bought was a pair of Joie linen pants, style Erlette (I think) from Rack. Other than the fact that I think I need to stitch the ties around the ankle, the pants are perfection, and I haven't seen them for less than triple what I paid. (It was a. Lucky score, they were in the clearance rack under the wrong size, I just always look through).

    3. Oh and a few of the Jcrew items were gifts as well.

    4. I didn’t spend anything at J.Crew in Feb, so NSF was a partial success in that regard after quite a few January purchases. However, I bought quite a bit at BR (mostly dresses and shoes), and a few items at Nordstrom Rack. So, I’m hoping to do better this month. I’m sure if I’d had a local store with the $9.99 sale (or maybe $14.99 CAD!) I would have made some J.Crew purchases in February, but without a local store I don’t see J.Crew being a big temptation in the near future.

    5. Compared to January, February was way better. Spent less than half what I did in January and was much pickier about what I bought. 4 items total (across all brands): a sweater, a liberty shirt, a white button down (to replace one I had) and an old skirt from eBay. March is looking similar. I have some stuff I want but I've been leaving them in my wish list and really asking myself if I want/need it. Also going thru my closet and getting rid of stuff I no longer wear.

    6. I did well with J Crew and only spent about $85. Scored several items from $9.99 sale. I’m actually shocked at how little I’ve purchased. I didn’t count purchases made on vacation in South Africa.

    7. I placed ONE order in February and it was for shoes that didn't fit me which I promptly listed on Poshmark. I can't believe it. I ordered several times a week, a day sometimes, if the prices were good!

Purchased only from the red line sales, 3 items from each so 6 total. Oh, and the charge send snake boots.
Besides those clothing purchases, I spent <$40 on navy blue bi-stretch Ryan pants from BR which I love. Only love their bi-stretch and needed navy pants as my others are too big. J Crew had no offerings that worked for me. $20 on camel wool Maddies from Ebay, and $35 on a seemingly new wool houndstooth J Crew schoolboy blazer (B6004) on Ebay. Lastly, spent $42 on cheapie bags from Romwe which have yet to arrive from China.
I've also been selling on Poshmark and Ebay. Not sure where my shopping dollar will go, certainly not to any one store. But adding pieces here and there has been fun!

    8. I didn’t accomplish NSF but I did buy less esp compared to Jan. I ended up with the Sorrento canary yellow sweatshirt, pale yellow vintage tee, a pair of Point Sur Hightower jeans (still not sure about keeping them though) and the Sul Mare peony tee that I just received. Hoping to buy less in March too as I really didn’t need to buy anything in Feb but still did.

    9. I didn't do NSF but it has been lovely to watch JCAs supporting each other and making more thoughtful choices.
For a few months now, I have been trying to keep the sale goggles off, and as painful as it's been, I have returned $8 dresses and $20 cashmere because the fit was lacking or the quality was lacking. Once I could eliminate the "for the price I paid it's ok" from my vocabulary, it became easier. I don't have much space and want to make sure I always look polished and professional. No matter how little or how much I paid for something, if it doesn't look great, the price won't be able to compensate, at least for me. Your experience might be different. You all have taught me a lot about thoughtful purchasing, I am so appreciative!

    10. Anthro, I totally agree! I too have been more thoughtful and also less willing to settle thanks to JCAs. I could have kept two cotton mockneck center cableknit sweaters that were $35 each. But I liked the quality, color and fit of neither. Instead I kept an LL Bean cotton fisherman sweater that I bought for more than double the price of one JC sweater. And I love the quality, color and fit and I wear it constantly, and it is one of my favorite purchases this winter season. If NSF has taught me anything, it's that I'm not settling any more for poor quality just for the sake of buying JC.

    11. EEPS, I have a similar story with the Everlane wool turtleneck I bought. I love the feel and the fit so much. I don't want to wear it all the time so I bought the Jcrew cashmere mockneck (using rewards and promos price wasn't terrible) and although the material is soft I don't like the fit nearly as much as the Everlane one. I'm hoping I can sell it on Posh for what I paid and then buy another Everlane one.

  5. I only purchased the Lady Jacket in the royal blue color which I really like and it was 50% off. That's it. I am also selling on Poshmark, getting rid of the clothes that are just sitting in my closet. I am selling enough to cover my new purchases. I also bought a pair of jeans on Tory Burch which I love. There is nothing on my wish list for spring at J Crew.

  7. Is the redline sale still going on in stores? I know some of you managed to snag Liberty shirts, would you mind sharing the style number and store you visited so I can call around? I am hoping there are still some left out there!
