J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Posted this late last night:

I got the Madewell Langford wide leg crop pants in metallic. They're super sparkly. Fit is great. But I think they're just too flashy for me. They're really fun. Could work with a tuxedo top, chambray top, or simple sweater, dressed up or down. But for someone who barely wears color they might just be too much for me. Pics don't do the sparkle justice. Fabric is like a metallic brocade. I have a blazer from my sweet 16 in 1985 that's a metallic brocade and it feels similar.
Husband said I looked like I should be on a cruise, 21 year old daughter loved them.
Considering I just sold my ludlow pants with sequin tuxedo stripe for a steal because they were too loud for me I think I'd be crazy to keep them but they ARE special. The. Colors work with the ex-boyfriend mixed star print top but not sure the fit does. .

I definitely need to think about them. From Madewell I also have the black sateen pants and another pair of black wide leg/cropped pants coming.

    1. Keep. They fit so well, and so you wear them once in a while. I think you'll be happy you have them in the long run. They really do look fantastic on you!

    2. So I sent the pics to my mom and she loved and said I should wear them to my nephews bar mitzvah reception in Feb. The attire is "Cocktail" so not super formal. I had intended on wearing the long tie waist skirt in faille but maybe this would work. More of a statement, for sure.

    3. yes!!! keep them! Wear to the bar mitzvah!!!

  2. just received the Ribbed popover . navy and the ivory.
item H4160. with the 40 % and extra 10% promo (Cyber Monday).
This is great example of what is going wrong with J Crew.
this sweater could have been great. good colour choices as well.
but its cropped , wide, and the is pilling right out of the bag. it will either looks worn out soon or be sweater shaved to death. the navy is a true navy..love the colour and the ivory was ..as other mention see through. the neck and snaps are superb...but not enough to keep it. darn. this could have been mine in all available colours (just my style) but its going back.

    1. I totally understand your review, but I actually liked the cut of this sweater for me. I'm 5'4" and it hit me just right--not too long or short (I never wear petite)---and I really liked the casual boxy fit for the style of the sweater. I have worn twice and no pilling so far!! Agree: love the deep, true navy color. Grosgrain trim with oversized snaps is a great detail. Found my xs to be comfy size.

    2. Do you guys find the popover to be itchy at all? How is the quality of the lambswool? I love the boxy oversized fit for this top and will have to wait until the navy is in stock again. Thanks in advance for your input!

    3. Yup, I liked the concept so much that I ordered multiple sizes just in case! But all of them went back. Wide and cropped makes me look super sloppy.

    4. I'm short-waisted (and 5'9") and I too loved this sweater. It's got a pretty normal length on me, and I love the dark green color. I've worn mine once and it only has 1 pill, near my wrist. And 100% lambswool - I expected this to not actually be 100% lambswool :)

    5. @namora. I am not overly sensitive to wool, and I'm fine w the itchiness level. I wore with a short sleeve tee underneath and was fine. There was mild itch at the neck that I noticed a bit, but nothing intolerable to me. I did wear with a silk neck tie the second time.

  3. Hey, has anyone bought the Oversized Striped Turtleneck? Just how oversized is it? I can't figure out what size to order. Thanks!

    1. I’m trying to figure that out too. I didn’t see it in store yet

    2. I ordered a small so who knows. I will report back.

    3. I have two from previous years (B3380) and both are XS. My most usual shirt size is a small (and sometimes medium). The sleeves are more fitted and the body is flowy. I like them so much I ordered another in pink/burgundy.

  4. I have a question.. the new stars tippi sweater has a picture with some yellow skirt. What skirt is it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Natalya - I think that skirt is the garment-dyed chino ruffle skirt from last year when the stars Tippi was originally released. This was the item pic on the site last year. HTH!

      Delete
    2. Thanks for making the Tippi star sweater EXACTLY the same as last year. A different color would have been nice, or silver stars instead of gold. Really not impressed with the holiday offerings this year. Still waiting for shipment of lots of things ordered on Black Friday. At this point, if/when the orders finally arrive, I'll probably have to return most of it because the holiday season will be over. :(

    3. That Tippi was one of my favorite purchases last year and I love it to death, but some of the stars are starting to unravel - not in hide-able places either. I love that thing but eesh! I've only handwashed it twice! That said, I would get another one or three if they had different color combos.

      Delete
    4. eeps - I know! Love my star Tippi but really don't need another one exactly the same. It is just festive enough but not over the top. Cobalt blue with silver stars would have been lovely!

      Delete
    5. I missed it last year, so this year just bought two to protect against losing one. Good price point with the 40% off and extra 15% code I received that says December 17th but worked now. I considered buying more black and blue tippis as well, but stopped myself. You can get a tippi for $40 a few times a year. It will come around again.

  5. J Crew tee reviews.
Rose embroidered tee - tts and fabric is substantial so not sheer. Rose is nicely done & colors are versatile.
Live a little tee - tts & the embroidered letters have a little silver shimmer. It's a nice detail and looks festive.
Champagne tee - tts & champagne letters are sequin. I've worn this tee a few times already. It's a cute look for holidays and after.
White wine tee - I accidentally ordered this but happy I did. It's a cute play on white wine with white lettering. Wish the background was a different color so white lettering would be more visible. It's still a nice tee.

    1. Thank you for reviewing the tees! I'm STILL waiting for mine to be delivered. My rose tee says 12/19. Champagne tee was supposed to be delivered by 12/12, which is today. I have not received a shipping notice, so who knows? This has been one frustrating holiday shopping season with J Crew.

    2. I must be the only one who doesn't care foe statement tee or sweatshirts...just don't want people reading my shirt. just my opinion though..

    3. I thought the Rose tee ooked a little cropped in the store. Did you think that Tara?

      Delete
    4. I wish they would have had a fun Christmasy holiday tee.

      Delete
    5. @Shopping Celle, I know Tara will respond, I’m just adding my 2 cents. :) I bought it yesterday in store, I either buy small or xs in tees and I bought it in xs as I liked it a little slimmer (it still wasn’t tight on me but I have a small chest). The length was fine on me at 5’7”, i did have lookouts on which are higher rise but it tucked easily into those. Def not as long as my perfect fit tees - shorter than some tees but I wouldn’t call it cropped. Agree with Tara that it’s substantial and not sheer, nice quality.

      Delete
    6. I measured the xs, 23” long at the longest part from the top of the back neck to hem. I won’t put it in dryer

    7. I'm just over 5.8 and it's not cropped; easily tucked into my jeans and I can lift up my arms with no issue. I wore it Sunday with my mom. There's a pic on IG (peterst1) where I think you can see it fairly well.

    8. I own the tee too and can second what @mygoddy said! There is a pic on my IG too.

  6. Bought the Star Tippi F8261 today. The site wouldn't let me use my $25 off card, so I called CS to ask if they would honor it along with the 40% promo. CS was super friendly and did honor it and upgraded shipped to 2 day air! Very pleased today!

  8. I also bought the mockneck cable sweater in heather cilantro. I am keeping it, but might have sized up if I'd been in-store to get a more relaxed fit. I have my usual XS, and it fits perfectly, but worry about slight shrinkage when I wash (I wash all my JC sweaters in cold on gentle and air dry).... Also got the fair isle turtleneck sweater. This is more fitted than I expected. I love it, but again, might have sized up if I'd been near a store. I worry it'll shrink over time. And I like this style of sweater in a looser fit for my casual life. However, I love the colors. One reviewer was on the money to mention it's not cream at the neck as it appears online, it's a soft creamy peach color. Lovely.... The silk twill top in paisley is a keeper for me, too. I have returned a few JC silk tops in the past because they feel tissue thin. But this one has a bit more body to it, and I love the print. It's going to be very versatile for me. I haven't checked, but I've been thinking it might even strangely go with my metallic gold paisley JC skirt from a year or two ago! Hoping. Fit is TTS.... And lastly, another keeper, is the mock neck top in floral lace. Built-in cami??!! Yes please!!! Love the bright blue, grosgrain ribbons at neck and shoulder are perfect. Again, will wear tons. TTS.

    1. Hi bee, I'm a fellow lover of the silk twill paisley top too. I thought it looked much nicer IRL. I also bought the fair isle turtleneck and agree that the colours are great. I sized up from XS to small to get a little extra length. It's a bit loose in the shoulders now but I'm glad it's a touch longer.

  9. Tartan Cameron pants arrived last night. Fit is similar to the other Cameron pants although with the lining there is less give. The color - it's not quite what I expected. More green in the pattern than I thought it would have. I can't decide if they are chic or if I look a little dowdy. Going to try on with some additional tops tonight before deciding if they are a return or a keep.

    1. Received these yesterday as well. I also thought it was a black plaid and was surprised by the amount of green. I didn't have time to try them on with tops yet so we'll see. I like that they are lined and not super cropped on me.

      Delete
    2. I'm wearing those pants with a black turtleneck today and I think it works pretty well. I think the green in the pattern makes them a bit more festive. Also, I discovered that the "jade" schoolboy blazer from Factory this fall is an excellent match for the green in the Cameron tartan pants.

    3. Mine came today. Agree there is a lot of green in them. Wish they were 100% wool. Can't decide if I look like I came out of an old Christmas movie (read Christmas Vacation, 1980 something) or not. Will also report back. It's going to be either love or hate - not sure which.

      Delete
    4. This was my dilemma with the tartan tiered maxi skirt. In some ways I love it but part of me wonders if I look pioneer woman or frumpy. It def screams Christmas. I ended up keeping it as it was fun, the quality was good and my little ones liked it. It's comfortable to wear for me but I still question my decision a bit.

      Delete
    5. Mine are going back. They don't fit but it's too 1980's for me. The plaid is just a little off - hard to put it in words - but it's not an updated plaid.

  10. Hi!
Does anyone know how the tie-front long cardigan fit? (Item H9759)
Might be a good deal with the 40% promo...
    Thanks!

  11. Stopped in with my daughter today. We both got jeans. She got a darker rinse high rise pair and I got the 9" high rise toothpick in charcoal wash. I sized down to a 24 and although they're w little tight on my butt fit well everywhere else. (Typical issue for me). I think they fit really nicely. I wish they had a 25 to try but I didn't see it and we were short on time. (I'm sure I can always exchange if I decide they're too fitted.)

    1. I bought a pair of the Billies in Loma Vista wash on sunday (somebody returned them). Price was crazy good and i love a cropped flare!
I have to shorten them though:)

    2. You look really good in a cropped flare. I can't get used to it on me.

    3. Thanks and you look awesome in the wide legged pants!!!

    4. @SuzHas, I ordered the charcoal high rise and am waiting as they've been backordered for Canada til Jan. Glad to hear you liked them as the online reviews are not very good.

    5. Really. I'm surprised. I'll check. My size is sold out online, I considered getting tall but kind of like the length of the regular.

  12. Here's a comment/question on clothing durability.

Does anyone find well-loved sweaters really only look good for a season? I have several JCrew chunky Cambridge cable turtlenecks and a wool sweater from madewell that I've handwashed and maybe once or twice washed on delicate and air dried, and after one season they're good for warmth and hanging around but don't look great. I actually have a big pile of sweaters from over the past few years that are like this. Certainly still functional but a little worse for the WEAR.

I guess that's the way it is. For the most part (for my lifestyle) it's ok, but I guess I'm just going to get a few sweaters a year and either know they're good for hanging around the house or donate/toss them if they become too ratty.

I refuse to dry clean these everyday sweaters. Mostly I'll hand wash and air dry with some mild detergent and sometimes I'll add a drop of lavender oil.

    1. Most sweaters with a wool or wool blend tend to pill and look bad very fast. I generally just avoid buying them . Occasionally i will and will just use a sweater de piller to make them look better

      Delete
    2. I do use a de piller as well.

    3. I stopped buying JC Cambridge years ago because of this very problem. The sweaters just looked a bit sad 2/3s thru their first winter. And then I couldn't justify getting rid of them so soon, and barely wore them except days I wasn't going anywhere (rare). JC 100% wool has fared much better for me. I care for mine just as you do. No dry cleaning! Cashmere and mohair has held up pretty well too. My main problem now is some shrinkage from my periodic gentle cycle washings. Very careful.

      Delete
    4. For shrinking sweaters, I’ve had some excellent results using the much publicized method of soaking it with some conditioner and then re-shaping it. I did it with a Lands End cashmere tee a few weeks ago and regained 2” in the arms and body length.

      Delete
    5. I have one Cambridge sweater, and you're right they do look a bit shabby after awhile. I think it's because it's a blend with acrylic. So now it's a hiking sweater or a yardwork sweater.....

      Delete
    6. Yes, exactly. I do the conditioner thing too. I guess it is what it is.

    7. Sigh...my burgundy merino Eden (?) cardigan from spring 2012 is still going strong. I wish they had continued the style. And the quality was awesome...

    8. The Eden cardigan was the BEST. Perfect length, 100% merino and all of those colors! Sigh.

  14. I forgot to post this after my store visit this weekend. While I was waiting in line to make my return the lady in front of me had some factory items to return. The SA refused to return the items even though the lady said she purchased them on the retail site. The exchange was so rude - the SA didn’t even know that factory stuff shows up on the site and made it sound like the customer was crazy for saying that. Sad state of affairs :(. The woman just took the factory returns and said she would drop them in the mail and call Cs. Our factory store isn’t that far away but a hassle nonetheless, especially if you purchased on the retail site!

    1. If its purchased on the retail site,it can be returned in store!

    2. I would have pulled the site up on my phone and asked for the manager. So rude.

  15. I noticed there was a new embellished red plaid boy shirt today but didn't see it in my store. It's difficult to tell in online pics if it's embroidered or what. (I wish it was plain). I need to replace my red tartan shirt and haven't seen anything I like in a smaller scale so I'm curious.

  17. Two more Madewell pant reviews:
raymond pull-on pants: black poly. I ordered XS and S. I'm usually a 00/0 or 24/25. I think the XS is got is mismarked because I was struggling to pull them over my thighs. They're definitely a size or so too small. The Small is coming today, even small they look like they have a nice shape and as much as I struggle with wanting o wear poly they're great for wanting to feel comfy but look polished and for travel.

9" high rise sateen jeans in black. I love these. They do run a tiny bit smaller than other jeans and seem to have less stretch but the fit is great.

  18. I noticed today with the 40% off that the green drapey faux wrap blouse is being restocked (in March!). Reviews say to size up, but does that mean the larger of my usual 2 sizes? Any feedback from those who've tried it? I'll be wondering for months if I ordered the right size...
