"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I know this is a perpetual vent, but I'm so tired of the price games at the factory. I didn't even use my GILT City code because the prices jumped up every day. Has anyone had any luck with contacting them about this to complain? I think they need to know directly from their customers that this is a huge turn off. Thanks

    1. Hi bythelake - I hear you. Plus, the prices were also different in store v online. I stopped in to look around and some things were 30%, some were 40%, some were 50% (with a lot of things sold out in most sizes). I had to check the website on my phone while browsing in the store to compare prices.

I usually use my Gilt City coupon on Casey cardigans for little_lining, but they didn't have much of a selection in store and were excluded online. At that point, I didn't feel like bothering with ordering from the store even though I'm sure they would've honored the GC.

    2. factory prices are in US $$ for the canadian site . like this makes sense. it is so over priced for Canadians ...I stopped looking ages ago.

    3. I agree that this go around the Gilt code was pretty much worthless. Prices were better before and after the code was valid. I will say in the past the Gilt code ran during a 50% off everything promo and it was a great deal. I did use it to purchase 2 pair of shoes after the buy one get one promo ended. The shoes were $70.50 and after the Gilt discount they were about $45 a pair.

  2. I think there are some winners in this rollout - ordered the Parke Blazer in Velvet and the Wrap Coat in Boiled Wool. My (minor) vent is that Velvet-plus-Denim feature. Ugh, the dated hi-lo (and sequins, and OTS, and pattern mixing) thing again. Always overboard w a look or trend, J Crew. It's not new, it's Jenna circa 2008.

    1. And from the last pic in that "Style Story" (uhhhh)...no more collar-biting!

    2. collar-biting? what have i missed?

    3. I think it started last fall, I saw a little in the spring and now it's starting back up again...probably difficult to bite an OTS top!

  3. I stopped in store briefly yesterday but didn't buy anything because I had already placed 2 orders online yesterday. I saw that they still had a stack of those 15% coupons at the register and asked the SA if I could have one for my next purchase. She wouldn't give me one, saying it was "against policy," but she couldn't tell me what the actual policy was (like you have to buy something to get one?) Kind of annoying, considering they expire in two weeks, they may as well give them out, to you know, encourage purchases. Does anyone know what the "policy" actually is?

    1. I have only received a 15% off once, and I did not purchase anything, they just handed it to me. I HAVE purchased things many times in the past 3 months and NEVER received one when buying something. I wish I had gotten more since it would have encouraged me to order a few things. Especially since I know everyone else seems to have them.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but I think it depends on the sales person. (My main store has never given one out to me with a purchase or not.)

    2. I have never received one & have made purchases almost every time I'm in the store. Honestly, I didn't know they existed until now. Wish I had one because I would like to order a few online only items. Oh well.

    3. i got a few with online purchases... but not every purchase... just random.

    4. I may stop by again and hope to get a different SA. They're useless if they just let them sit there until they expire. No one was even buying anything when I was there.

    6. The 15% brown card coupon that I received in store back in June/July was given to me when I returned something from an online order - the wording on that particular card has something to that effect ('if at first you don't succeed...'). This one can only be used in-store and is good until the end of the year. Cannot be combined with other coupons or store sales and is only good on Full-price purchases.

I've also received a 15% coupon along with online orders and this particular one CAN be stacked with other promos, but it also has a much shorter expiration date (usually like a 3 or 4 week period.)

    7. The larger stackable ones are also available in store and that was where I got my last one, and the one I asked for yesterday but was denied. And I have also seen people selling them on eBay. :P
WFF thanks for the tip. :)

    8. @Cass, oh, i see, I didn't realize there were Stackable ones in-store!! That's really bizarre not to distribute them, especially if they expire. Who are they for, like you said??!! Ah, well.

    9. yes @ TM93, I got my last one at the Columbus Circle store about two weeks ago, in addition to one I got with a shipment from online. They may or may not have any left at that location, but it's worth a look by the register next time you go.

    10. Thanks, Cass! That is good to know. I was just at that location yesterday checking out NAs and picking up my ship-to-store, but I wasn't anywhere near a register so I will check next time!

    11. I think not handing them out either=complete apathy or resentment at returns. I've never been given a 'bounce back' card, either, though an associate loitering next to the SA ringing up my return once pointedly placed one on the counter next to the SA assisting me as though to remind her to give me one. I didn't say anything, as I knew I wouldn't use it (non-combinable 15% off full price). The white cards are a different story...have used all three I've been sent, and could have used more 😳.

    12. I've received both the brown bounce-back and white sporadically but never use the brown (non-combinable off full price. Forget it).

I always guessed that there is an "official" policy which individual SAs and stores execute inconsistently. Maybe the policy is strict and certain lovely SAs dole them out generously anyway, or maybe the policy is more liberal and certain cranky SAs are resentful of returns and are more stingy.

      The whole thing is exhausting.

    13. My understanding is that the brown 15% off coupons are for when you return in-store. It's to encourage you to return and shop in-store.

    14. And the first return, I mean and online return to the store.

  4. I miss just about everything from the old crew. even a year or two ago. gosh... recent roll outs ,lack of decent promos, sale page going for 5 days with no promo and no additional items added.

    1. I know, I feel the same way. My thoughts are that the next season may be the last one with any influence from Jenna. I was really hoping to find colorful sweaters and shoes with this roll-out. I can't prove it, but with these neutral colors I promise I think the new management cancelled some orders.

  5. I got my big box of pre orders - the croc boots were smth I was really looking forward to. Haven't tried on yet, but they're made in Romania. . I tried the new loafers in the deep brown - also made in Romania . They are decent leather and I got them on promo. The leather is stiff, though, (but not gross like from India) and no wrinkling in the upper. But the fit is off: even in my half size down, my foo5 was flapping as I walked. I adore the velvet bomber. Lovely piece, though cropped a bit. I tried on the XXS. Will post on IG soon (tonight if I'm lucky). My handle is sartorialchoices. Also got the Turtle neck body suits and faux leather pleated skirt.

    1. Yaaaas! Can't wait to see your pics.

I just ordered the bomber along with the elastic skirt again, since TM93 mentioned they rolled out size petite the day after. So ordered the navy and the gold to try (for fun).

  8. Factory has one of their bogus buy one get one deals going on again...this time on pants. The factory Winnie pants have been $39.50 consistently for the past few weeks and are now up to $64.50. This is ridiculous and such a turn off.

  9. Do we think the darn eyelet kaftan is going to eventually be lower than $49.99 -30%? It has sold for less, and now that I have an actual honest to goodness vacation coming up, I have a reason to purchase.

  10. Well, I'm annoyed because I really, really need a black clutch and JC doesn't even sell any. Fortunately, I found one at Velvet by Graham & Spencer. On the plus side, the rose-gold sequin skirt I got from JC recently is awesome! Well made and very flattering.
