  1. :: REVIEW :: Elastic Velvet skirts in navy and gold, size PS - the waist fits but it still didn't look tapered from the hips down. @ 4'11, the length ended just below my knees.

Velvet Bomber in xxs - Fit was a tad small on me. @36B, a size xs would be perfect, so I say it fits TTS. A well made bomber.

All three items are a pass for me. Trying the velvet items brought back memories of me in my 20's when I wore a lot of velvet during grunge--stuff I bought from Betsy Johnson, Velvet flats from Kenneth Cole. So 90's! 😂 I can't relive those fashion moments again. Unless these pieces were designed in a way that it's totally modern and innovative then I would consider keeping it. Oh well, moving on.

    1. The velvet revival is reminding me of the 90s when I couldn't afford velvet so I wore velour... a lot of bad fashion decisions were made. My personal issue with velvet is maintenance. It's easy to ruin with water and brushing the nap in the wrong way. I collect vintage and I stay away from velvet because of the fabric care, especially if it gets stained. I agree that it can be dating though every few years velvet comes back as the fabric of the season. Something as timeless as a cami seems safe, whereas a velvet bomber seems more time specific, like a trucker hat.

    2. Just seeing pics of the skirt it looks like the design is not well thought out. It's just straight, not flared which would be flattering, or more fitted like a pencil. It just hangs.

I personally think velvet blazers are timeless, but other items definitely cycle in and out.

    3. Thanks eeps! I never knew velvet can be high maintenance.
      Velour--another trend when I owned a juicy couture track jacket-oy! 😀

    4. Yes! I love velvet blazers.

    5. I can't get on board with the trendy velvet pieces either as it gives me flashbacks to my college years. I do agree the classic pieces such as blazers and camis do seem to keep coming back into style every few years. I still feel like I am just going to avoid them as I feel velvet is one of those holiday type of items that has a limited time window to wear.

    6. saw the above items in store. the skirt is a def "no" for me. while the bomber is well made...again just not what I would want to wear again. elastic waist skirts...gee J Crew you really are cutting corners theses days.

    7. @JSR, i was particularly disappointed with the Velvet skirt, as it has very good reviews on the site. Suz Has hit the nail on the head re) the skirt not 'flaring out or fitted like a pencil' -- it literally just hangs. Sorry to hear it wasn't a love for you either!

    8. Velvet is a short walk to velour for me so always a pass. Seems so holiday to me. With that being said I have a pair of chunky heel ankle boots with a side zipper that I do like with denim. I am in the design industry and the sofas and chairs are everywhere! Another pass if you have pets!

    9. Never owned anything velvet and I'm not going to start now. And the words "velvet and elastic waist" just don't belong together!

    10. I just adore velvet, but restrict it to holiday wear with the exception of an olive velvet jacket from Olsen which I wear in the fall. I have several pairs of velvet jeans that I love to pull out in December (I realize as I type this that no one needs several pairs of velvet jeans!), and an absurdly large number of velvet camis and tanks that I have collected during January sales over the years. But unlike several others, I have no recollection of wearing velvet during the 90s. Maybe it wasn't a big look where I'm from?

    11. I find velvet that contains a respectable percent of silk hangs gracefully and is comfortable to wear. Otherwise it feels like commercial upholstery to me. i have a few treasured jackets in different prints and colors, that kind of fabric became extinct after 9/11. i don't care for top-to-toe velvet (Mrs Santa?), and i have grim memories of a December housewarming party - business event - where the guys were all in dark suits and the women were seemed to have been sprayed with black velvet. Looked like a wake where everyone was sober. Probably some were.

As usual, JC is overdoing a perceived trend. I don't need a wardrobe of velvet pieces, I am going to wind up keeping the green velvet top for the sequin skirt, and every day it's at a different store and getting cheaper...

for another, more frightening trend, see the Muppet look here

    12. I think velvet is a moderation fabric. It's almost like clothing jewelry, which makes it off putting for me as a full on trend. I also think it's too seasonal, as mentioned earlier, to own a ton of it. I have a velvet cropped jacket I have neglected and I will probably pull that out and pass on buying new things.

I have never found velvet to be high maintenance, but maybe it's because I gravitate more towards cotton velvet. It's a bit stiffer and can be less mistaken for velour which I think is the tackiest thing on the planet.

    13. Y'all, I still have my velvet jeans from J. Crew Factory from 1990-something! They're still looking good, although they haven't gotten much wear, as velvet typically won't.

  2. I was told a few weeks ago by customer service that there would be no daisylace pant in tall sizes. Well, I just checked this morning and there it is! I 'm happy customer service was wrong. You think it would have been released earlier but whatever. It's Item H0664.

  3. I tried on a few things at Madewell yesterday. I love the velvet bow-back tee dress. It's super comfortable and the fit is great if you like non-waisted dresses. I tried it on in the dark metal color, which is a great alternative to black and lighter grays. I didn't see the dark cabernet color in store, but that's what I would order.

I felt that the velvet cami from MW was a bit on the small side, and went up from a 4 to a 6. The pink flannel sunday shirt was incredibly cozy and definitely a thicker fabric, but it looked big on me in my normal size. I know it's meant to be oversized but it didn't work for me. I also didn't realize it had pockets.

    1. Hi FriendlyFemme - in your opinion, do you think the pink of the Sunday shirt was more like the model pic or the pic of just the shirt? On my monitor, they look different.

The Sunday shirt is kind of a tricky silhouette - it's a big, boxy body but the sleeves are TTS to small. I have the buffalo check version in an XS (my usual is S) and the body fits great but the upper sleeves and shoulders are slightly shrunken. I washed it in baby shampoo and stretched out the sleeves a little so the fit is better, but it would've definitely been too big in an S - more like a man's shirt-jacket.

    2. I'm hoping they tweaked the cut of the Sunday shirt this year. I agree with you silver_lining that the fit was tricky last year and I think that's why I didn't buy it.

    3. Okay I got the Sunday shirt today in two sizes and I like the fit this year. It seems pretty normal to me. The shoulders are not dropped. Still has on-seam side pockets. I usually wear a Medium. The Small fit okay but I liked the roomier Medium better and that's the one I'll keep. The color looks like the shirt shown by itself on the web site rather than the shirt shown on the model.

    4. Thanks @cate. I'm glad it worked for you. Good to know about the color. I wouldn't have thought to check the product shot. I should know better.

  4. I love the 2003 washed silk V-neck tank in all the colors.

  5. Just received a small order. LOVE the Chino Trench skirt! It's fitted on the waist and hips and is kinda high waisted, which I like and it's a good length for me. Just above the knee. Also bought the camo Tippi...and I'm glad I did! Also happy with the green "colorful floral earring"....It matches exactly with my spring green Tippi and Jackie cardigan.
