"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  2. Got the Blackwatch Plaid excursion vest today. Not a real vent, maybe a review. It fits like all my other excursion vests (yes, I have a few), and it's lovely, but the coloring. It is so dark that it reads dark blue until you really look at it closely. Why couldn't they have chosen a more vibrant color way. I already have a navy, back it goes.

    1. levbacon - I agree the blackwatch plaid is too dark.

  3. So I was lucky enough to catch the Avery Tweed Heels on popback. After over a week I finally got the cancellation notice. I knew it was too good to be true. I haven't had any items cancelled in a very long time. So disappointed.

    1. Sorry, Jess! I got my first cancellation in a long time yesterday; the navy Drake scarf. Inventory issues continue, I guess. I think some stores are slow to pull online purchases and the items sell in-store first.

    2. Sorry for you too Wendy. There were plenty of other items I wouldn't have been that sad about but this was a bummer as I doubt I will be able to catch another pair and I am sure that is the case with the scarf as well. Oh well. The in store fulfillment is both a blessing and a curse.

    3. @Jess, don't give up hope! I was able to catch the Avery tweed heels on popback (I'm in Canada so online doesn't include store fulfilment for us, just what's showing in the warehouse). I'd keep checking as I've seen some popback recently.

  4. I'm all done with J.Crew cashmere. I have plenty of cashmere sweaters from them and the quality gets worse every single year. Bought a cashmere tee in October, it looked five years old after one wear because the pilling was outrageous. To their credit, after I wrote a two star review, they contacted me and offered me the chance to return it, which I did. I understand that I'll have to use a sweater comb occasionally but I don't have time to comb a sweater for 10 minutes every time I wear it (and this is not an exaggeration). I know I'm not alone in my complaints. I also can't understand the people who are giving these sweaters high marks. Do they just have lower standards? I simply want a sweater that I don't have to massively de-pill each time. Anyway, if anyone has recommendations of other brands, let me know. I guess I am more of a traditionalist as I'm not liking a lot of the styles lately - cropped, split hems, shapeless blobs, etc. Too bad, as J.Crew's colors are top notch as usual.

    1. Have you checked out Everlane?

    2. I have also had good wear with Banana Republic's sweaters. Of course, you don't have a choice of all the pretty colours.

    3. Club Monaco's cashmere is excellent, in my experience. Though they tend to offer mostly neutral colours. Also have had great cashmere from the White Label Project, a Scandinavian online retailer.

    4. I agree with cagliari67 my Club Monaco cashmere has been great. I've also had good experiences with Polo by Ralph Lauren and especially the house line from Holt Renfrew.

Not a fan of the J.Crew cashmere and even some of the wool ones have been less than stellar lately.

    5. Liz,
I had to smile about your frustration with other people's low standards. I often feel the same way with online reviews. If we don't complain, clothing manufacturers will never try to do any better. It's sorta like the girls in high school that laughed hilariously about every lame joke a guy made. I used to think, "These guys will never develop better material" if we enable them like this.

    6. Darn, sorry to hear that Liz. I keep hoping the quality will improve. I have had good luck with JC cashmere here and there, but I only buy after a specific sweater has lots of good reviews. Kind of bizarre that some of their cashmere would hold up well where most from the same year do not...

    7. @MaryG., haha on the unfunny jokes analogy!

    8. I too, have had good luck with Everlane cashmere. I have several sweaters from them, which I hand wash, and I have hardly ever had to use my sweater comb. They aren't too expensive either.

    9. My Boden cashmere crew neck looks and feels just as lovely as it felt the day I arrived. They are more fitted, too, if you are tired of shapeless sweaters. They are tad long for this shortie but otherwise fab.

    10. Vince is a really good option too. It's pricey, but I just wait for sale @ Nordstrom or NM.

  5. So I thought my trip to the clearance store was going to be a bust. Shoe racks partially empty, no good jewelry, etc. I have never seen such a picked over lame assortment there. They said their traffic of resellers has really picked up. That stinks!!! The SA told me she was working on some coats in the back and brought out an Olivia Collection topcoat with grosgrain belt in heather flannel in my size. It was love at first sight. I did find two pair of pants that I had been wanting and a couple other odds and ends so not all was lost. This coat is so awesome, especially with the little St. Bernard embroidered on the inside. I think this coat runs TTS to slightly large but I went with my usual size, retails for $495.00 and I paid $120.00. Take that resellers, this would have been a good one for Ebay!

    1. Totally worth the trip! That color is such a great neutral classic too.

    2. I agree. I think I am going to lower my expectations going forward of finding any good shoes. They said shoes were the hot item.

    3. The re-sellers must be getting ready for listing post-Thanksgiving listing. Very interesting.

  6. I forgot to mention that they had some of the Net-a-porter collaboration pieces and some of the new NB pieces. I didn't find anything in either one. I am sure these are pieces that people ordered and then returned.

  7. Dropping my recurring dislike for Comenity & their credit card. I found out that they have mice running in wheels to update the data on the website. No wonder.

    1. Yes, Gigi, complaints about Comenity should be a sticky, a permanent post! I know others have mentioned before, but it's frustrating trying to reconcile different purchases with each posting. Even Banana and the Gap family have more helpful billing in that sense.

  8. Does J.Crew periodically pull all reviews for an item and start from scratch? I could swear the high waist gingham bottoms had some online reviews, but when I went to add mine today, there were no other reviews. J.Crew, if you expect your customers to spend their valuable time reviewing YOUR products for YOUR benefit (and the benefit of other shoppers), you should respect that and leave the reviews there! I didn't post my review on their site as a result, interested shoppers can find it here on JCA if they're interested.

    1. I've noticed that too, but I honestly think it's moreso due to their infamous website glitches VS an intentional process. (I only think this b/c sometimes I see the missing reviews pop back up.) But who knows, agree that it's lame if they are intentionally pulling them.

    2. Lands End used to do it, which surprised me as I expected better integrity from them. An item would get a number of bad (and often consistent) reviews, and it would be moved to clearance with the reviews stripped out.

  9. I concur with the bad cashmere comment. I already have a three year old ivory cashmere turtleneck still in great shape. I bought a black one last week and the cashmere isn't as soft or thick. I am wearing it today for the first time so I am not sure about the piling yet. And I always am saddened by the cropped pants in the winter. Ugh!

  10. Annoyed that the J Crew store I visited had no catalogs out. When I asked for one, I was told they have the new gift guide but aren't allowed to give them out. Seriously? I'm requesting a catalog, you have them in the back room but won't give one to me? OK. Whatever.

  11. not a fan of the new man-made soled shoes at that price :( not happy!
