"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. My rant would be my new wool sweater piling after two wears; but cs has been awesome about this so rant over.

However, great article here about free shipping:

    1. Interesting. I always thought it was cheaper for retailers to pay for shipping than to pay for store rent, upkeep and salesperson wages...

    2. Very interesting article, JCrew guy. I could see how shipping might be cutting into a retailer's profits, just based on some of the stories we hear from fellow JCAs on here (12 items ordered = 12 separate packages! Even with a bulk packaging deal w/ UPS, that's got to cost at least $5 per package! (I would think?)

    3. I actually don't mind paying shipping for small businesses and online retailers/eBay. I dislike paying for shipping from large companies, where I feel like mark ups, to be discounted, is rampant and that the cost of shipping is factored into the price of an item.

    4. Great article, thanks for posting it. I've often wondered how/if the free shipping model could be profitable.

    1. Lots of preorder goodness for sure! Two pair of shoes I am dying for (silver and gold sequin and glitter with black scallop trim...yes I am a glitter addict) I also like the black watch plaid blazer- I like to style conservative things a bit crazier so they don't look too proper!

    2. Was there an email for the pre-orders? I don't seem to be able to find them - or are they on the site?

    3. @tdmazz just search "pre-order" in the search box and they will show up. Some of the first items that show up have been out for a little bit but the newer stuff is about halfway down the page and on subsequent pages. hth.

    4. Tdmazz, just type 'preorder' in the search box and it will come up.

    5. There are also a few crazy pieces for J.Crew for Net a Porter that show up if you search for "collection"--not sure if these have been up before? They show as sold out but possibly just haven't had sizes populated yet. A little too crazy for me but interesting to look at.

    6. Chateau Parka in windowpane check is adorable.
Thanks for the tip about checking 'preorder'.

    1. Now that I can see the new stuff up close, I'm not all that interested. I agree regarding the pencil skirts. The pleats are a dealbreaker for me. IMO they messed up a lot:
Tartan flats would have been cute without the mesh.
Not a fan of the club collars on the newer blouses.
Would love a blackwatch coat, but "moto" isn't my style.

  5. JCrew sizing is out of control. I have now purchased their classic leather belt in three sizes. I am a solid size 4 on top, 6 on bottom and I have a curvier shape (wider in the hips and smaller in the waist and thighs), so I thought a M would be a safe choice for a belt meant to sit at the hips. It wasn't even close. I ordered a small and it just barely fit, so I worry about it stretching and not having any holes to move to as the belt ages and relaxes. Now here I am ordering an XS. I am no extra small. This is not flattering, this is annoying.

  6. Today I am finally wearing my plastic tortoise gemmas and six band aids, (3 on each foot). Yikes!

    1. I loved the look of these and tried them on but knew that I wasn't prepared to suffer for them.

    2. There were SO MANY pairs of these at the clearance store on Monday! I now know why.

    3. Did you get some good stuff?

    4. @DD - they had nothing in my size of interest but SO MUCH great stuff in a size 6 marked "sample"! I did get two pairs of classic ballet flats also marked as samples - one coral with cobalt grosgrain trim & bow & one pink with light grey grosgrain trim & bow. I'm thinking I need to drop about 30 lbs to get back to a size 6 & go back for all the goodies! (Easier said than done... having baked spaghetti for dinner tonight so...)

    5. I know. I feel the same way! Had chili and a little Debbie cake myself.

    6. After the first few wears the tortoise Gemmas broke in for me - no more band aids. Hopefully the same for you !

    7. I say both Taylor and Doodle are gorgeous, and the clearance center needs to carry all the fabulous clothes in your sizes, rather than you becoming the size of the clothing <3

    8. @DD Little Debbie cakes are my Kryptonite.

@Anthro Blogger what kind words! :)

  7. The inventory games can be enough to drive you crazy sometimes. I was looking at the merino blazer online the other day - haven't stopped thinking about it since I tried it on in the store and of course it's sold out in most sizes. I called CS and there were none in store. The next morning it popped back available to order on backorder (January 2017) so I placed the order only to look an hour later and see that there was one in stock available to be shipped...argh. We'll see if it ships. Just goes to show if you're a little OCD and check the website over the course of the day you just may luck out!

    1. Hi cousy - they might be. It looks like everything in the "Weddings and Parties" section is on markdown, including all of the formal/bridesmaids dresses.

  9. My vent is gold buttons. I hate them on the merino wool jackies and the peacoats. I would buy these items if not for the gold buttons. Also wish the downtown field came in a version without the brass-tone snaps.

    1. Fourth on the gold buttons!!!

Also, bought the velvet lucite heel, searched for them and they feel like cardboard. Just not sure I can go through the pain. Was going to return them today, but the girls at work convinced me to retry them.... so I am taking them home....
The Avery suede heels with tassels, super comfy, but little elderly looking.... so can't decide, but hate having so much stuff in the house and on my credit card... anyone else has any thoughts?
At the store, 40% off sale, small section, lots of Samie chinos.... few t shirts. Nothing special!

    2. Hi Kate - I have the lucite velvet heels and really like them a lot. I was pleasantly surprised to discover what a great neutral shoe they are while trying them with numerous outfits in my wardrobe the other day. Mine do not feel like cardboard, but did soften up and become more comfy the longer I was wearing them. Perhaps try wearing them around your bedroom for a little bit to see if that will help with your decision?

    3. kate - i too wanted to love the lucite but couldn't keep them....just too painful in the front area and i took my normal size. i think it was just the cut and the material used...not comfy at all .

    4. Ladies thank you! Bought both 7.5 and 8. 7.5 was small in toes... 8 Is good in toes, it's longer but that's not a big deal for me. Good to hear they loosen up, I will try as I like them a lot.... but big difference from the soft Avery heels, which I convinced myself were little elderly looking... but they not, and not like i am 20.... I am wearing 3 pairs of Tory burch wedges now, and they did not feel this way.... hard decision....lol... thanks all

    5. I sort of agree. I didn't like them at first, but I like them for certain colors like Navy and Off White. I have the Majesty Peacoat in the Dark Bone and I can't imagine the buttons being any other color. Dark buttons on light coats makes them look a little basic, and not in a good way.

    6. The gold buttons are a constant gripe for me. I have a wool Schoolboy I just purchased via Poshmark waiting to go to my alterations lady so she can switch out the gold buttons for silver ones I had to pick up at Jo-Ann. (I did snag the blazer itself for all of $25 so the extra cost for the buttons + the trip to the alterations place is NBD!)

    7. This past weekend I changed out the gold buttons on a J Crew sweater to buttons that matched the sweater (navy) and I could not *believe* how much better it looked.
