J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Almost 10am EST and I'm shocked there are no reviews yet! Yesterday I posted some shoe thoughts, re:sizing (all over the place). But the shoes are beautiful.

My "uniform" is typically jeans and black sweaters through the winter (with the occasional red or gray thrown in) so I've been trying black sweaters.

Last week I received two black turtlenecks from Jcrew: the Cambridge cable chunky and Cambridge cable. Both in black. Fit is true to size and not short or boxy and the turtleneck in wool cashmere blend was last year. I like the fit of these so much more than the Madewell cinematique mockneck, which is much boxier. (The knits are completely different, I like the fact that the Madewell is hand washable and a lighter knit.)

Madewell: I tried on the perfect vintage jean in chet wash: distressed edition. I think these will soften up beautifully and really feel like vintage jeans. Rips may be problematic for some as I stuck my toe in one as I tried them on. Size: fit true to size but will stretch as they are 100% cotton. Length felt a touch short since they're meant to be cuffed.

Has anyone tried the Madewell leather pouch clutch? As an insider with free monogramming, this seems like a nice item at a fair price. I've never bought any Madewell leather goods, though I know people love the totes.

    1. Hi Suz Has! Q re: the turtlenecks. Do either lend themselves to layering under? I have seen so many cute outfits with a chunky turtleneck sweater layered over a patterned button-up shirt. I don't want boxy, but slightly oversized would be optimal.

    2. That would definitely work, but you might want to size up. I could probably wear a button down shirt under mine and I took the XS but I was going for more of a fitted look since I have others that are wider. Even going up a size, I think it wouldn't look too boxy. It's a leaner cut, but since the knit is chunky it doesn't feel too sleek if you know what I mean.

    3. Thanks! Yes, that is exactly the look I am going for. :)

  2. I went by my local store at lunch today because I got another email from J.Crew for $25.00 off $100.00 purchase plus free shipping plus free personalization. I picked up the large pouch in Italian calf hair, it was not supposed to be included in the in store promo but they rang it up anyway and also grabbed the cinnamon lucite necklace with the green ribbon. I used my $25.00 off with the 30% promo so the pouch was $30.00. It is very cute, much bigger than I thought. The quality of the calf hair is a little sub par with their other calf hair offerings but still nice. There is also a little bird charm on the zipper on the large pouches that adds a nice touch. This would make an awesome gift for someone. I wanted to look at a few other things but they had not gotten everything in yet.

    1. The promo at my store was 25% off and 30% for cardholders but there are exclusions. I am not sure why I am getting these great emails but this is the second one and I am a cardholder.

  4. That's a great promo? Is that for cardholders only?

  5. Bracelet-sleeve dress in Italian stretch wool. On-site user reviews were all over the lot re: size and fit. So I ordered my regular JC dress size in a Regular and in a Tall. I'm definitely not keeping the regular, the short skirt length and the longer-than-expected sleeves made me look unbalanced. Also didn't like the heather saddle color, it was gloomy and lifeless, darker than it looked on my monitor. I felt that the Tall, with a slightly longer skirt, was a much better choice. Note that I'm 5'4". On the other hand, the sleeves look unfinished. They're too long - which I expected wth a Tall size - and way too wide. They flop around, and my arms are not toned. I love the warm plum color, which is a very rich purple, so I may look into having the sleeves altered.

    1. I also tried the deep azalea color in this dress, in my regular size. The website originally listed this dress as below the knee but at something like 26" from the shoulder which definitely is not below the knee. I'm 5'8" and it is above my knees. I don't mind the length but the sleeves are what bothered me as well - I am glad to hear I am not the only one. They're looser than I wanted them to be but I'm not sure I love the dress enough to alter it. I do love the color of the dress though and was really hoping for a wool suiting dress in this color.

  6. I got the PARTY PJ PANT IN PINSTRIPE this week. The fit is the same as the Drake's ankle pants, which works well on me. The pants are not lined but the wool is lightweight and not itchy so not too much of an issue. I like the details of the cuff and tuxedo stripe - nice updates. Price is $89, which isn't bad for these pants but the current promo puts them at a good price.

    1. I got mine yesterday. Is this the same as the rewards that showed up online? I imagine so?

    2. @SuzHas, yeah, it should be the same, same amount, etc. I haven't received the email version yet though. My husband and I both received our cards in the mail today as well, but we both used ours online last week.

I used mine to buy the Lady Day coat in Navy with Gold buttons, thanks to Maqsad's Insta review. (Thanks, Maqsad!) Will review in a little bit for anyone who's curious, although I know many are already familiar with this style.

  8. Straightaway Jean in bluff wash - ordered these in 26P. I'm 4'11. The length ends on my ankles. The thighs I found roomy, and does not look streamlined as the stock photo online. I could go for 25P but it's sold out online.

Vintage crop Jean in Rhodes wash - ordered these in 26P. Also another dud. I didn't like the wash as much after seeing it in person. Material is thin..gee, why are jeans so thin these days, yet so pricey? It's like chambray pants. Thighs are roomy too. Not a good look on me.

    1. Oh shoot, I just ordered the Vintage Crop in Rhodes wash but it hasn't arrived yet. I kind of understand putting out a lighter weight denim in summer, but November is an odd time to do it.

    2. I ordered the Vintage Crop in Rhodes but did not find them thin at all. I am 5'3 and ordered regular length. The petites are too short. But I love mine!

  9. Lady Day Coat in Navy with Gold Buttons -- Many of you are already familiar with the Lady Day, but since I'm not sure whether it'll be offered in stores this winter or remain online only, I thought I'd share some of my thoughts. After seeing it on our own lovely JCA, Maqsad's Insta, I was able to order the right size for me. I'm 4'11", 36B, with broad shoulders -- really wish this coat came in a Petite, as my build desperately calls for it with this coat. It's lovely and well-made, but both the body and arm length are two inches too long each. Length ends about 1.5 below my knees. I'd have to wear this with dresses/heels for the most part.*

I don't own any other Lady Days, but i recall the 4P feeling snug. Reviews recommended sizing up so I ordered this in a Regular 4. Fit is comfortable through the arms and chest (with room for a sweater), but I do wish the skirt part didn't flare out so much. (I felt like doing the Sound of Music spin through the fields once I put it on!) Others note the pocket placement on the seams adding to this full skirt impression. Also, something about the shoulders not lining up with my own broad shoulders -- they seem to almost pop out on their own if I stand a certain way.

I'm going to take this coat to a few tailors to see what hemming costs might be -- I can live with a longer length but the sleeve thing is something of a dealbreaker. (I actually need a dressier coat like this, which is why I'd like to keep it, if cost-effective.)

Lastly, the gold buttons work nicely with the Navy color. They feel slightly too big (& mine seem to squeak when I try to button them for some strange reason! Sewn on too tight to avoid mistakes of buttons past?)

All in all, I do recommend this coat, but i also suggest contacting CS for measurements, as they need to be carefully considered.
