J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. Maybe a few new arrivals at Madewell too? I'm finding it hard to keep track. BUT, the two (yipes) MW orders I placed yesterday have already shipped and should arrive this afternoon!

  2. Shoes: colorblock pumps in satin. These are gorgeous. The red is a deep rich, dark ruby red, I ordered my typical (these days) 8.5 since some of the reviews said they run a little large. I don't find this to be the case. The 8.5 feels a little tight. I ordered a 9 to compare, as I had to in the Lena cap toe pumps. I admit for the price I'm concerned about them stretching out, as other pumps have, but at least these have a strap so they won't fall off if so. I love a maryjane and these will look amazing with jeans or dressed up.

Caged flats in snakeskin (with silver straps). I ordered a 9 in these because I think that was all the was available. They're so pretty but do feel a tiny bit long. The width was fine so they may be ok. They're really pretty.

I also received the ladyday coat in fuchsia. I didn't try it on yet (I ordered the same size I have) but the color is very pretty. I don't wear much color but I reach for my red ladyday coat often. I actually wanted to match it to a bag so that might determine whether this is a keeper. On my monitor the color is a little more purple, IRL it's a brighter fuchsia/hot pink.

    3. Got it Weds, that was quick.

  3. The Factory Tortoise Links necklace is fabulous. I actually prefer the scale of it vs. the Retail version and have received tons of compliments. The brown goes with everything and the gray color seems interesting too. May pick that one up w the 60% off still going today. At $19.50, it's practically free. Factory jewelry can be very cheap-looking but this one is a winner.

  4. I really love the Drake collaboration and so I couldn't resist ordering a few more items with the promo.

Crystal fan earrings in warm fig (burgundy color) are a love. They're absolutely gorgeous and will work well with Drake collection and so much more.

Drake Green Bengal pajama shirt. Print is beautiful; I've had the pants for a bit. You can order your normal size. I ordered up for a more relaxed fit. Silk is a good quality & this print plays nicely with the pink Bengal skinny scarf. It's not called that, but that's what it is. It is cute tied at the neck & has a nice fringe detail. While I typically don't buy this type of scarf, I'm happy with the purchase.

Double pleated midi skirt in alpine meadows popped back in my size. It's a lovely color & actually works with the Drake shirt in green Bengal. Fit is tts & pleats lay well.

    1. Am I the only one who thinks "Hotline Bling" whenever I read about the Drake collab here? ; )

    3. @silver_lining that's a good one! Now I'll be singing that song in my head!

  5. Will be returning the men's velvet blazer in deep forest. Husband and I had to really work to see it as green-- it really just reads black. Wanted something special and different, but this didn't hit the mark.

  6. Tried the a-line double-serge wool sleeveless dress in ivory. Returning due to weird fit. The dress itself is gorgeous---substantial wool but not too heavy, and just beautifully made. Great price for the quality. The fit however... I always, always, always wear a size 0 in Jcrew dresses (5'4", 32B/34A). They fit me like a dream. This one fits perfectly from the waist down. The bodice is more like a strange size 4. The arm holes are too big, the shoulders are okay, the bust darts are waaayyy too low, and there is a good 2 inches of extra fabric there. I'm not large busted by any stretch of the imagination, but my figure looks positively sad and dowdy in this strangely fit dress. I've been hunting for a versatile ivory dress, and this would have fit the bill perfectly. So sad.

    1. This past year, I've had to go with the petite 0 in their dresses, where the 0 had been fine in the past. It sounds like our measurements are similar.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the advice MonicaBonica! I will try the petite next time. The waist doesn't hit you too high? The waist height was fine with the regular 0 for me.

      Delete
    3. Sometimes the waist is a smidge high, but the proper fit elsewhere makes up for it.

    1. It may be a while - there hasn't been a January catalog the last year or two, and I think that may be it for holiday items.

      Delete
    2. Should've checked the archives first - last December, it looks like there was a small rollout around the 15th, but nothing after that. May be similar this year? Also, they did a few of those daily promos (one day 30% outerwear, another day 30% sweaters, etc.) last December.

      Delete
    3. I am second guessing myself now but I thought one of the SAs at my store said they were getting a small rollout next week.

    4. Is it just me or does it seem like everything is just gone, sold out sizes, etc.? There are no shoes to be had, no jewelry. I wasn't tempted by a single sweater (WHAT????) Don't get me wrong, I have bought quite a bit but feel like everything is so picked over already. Maybe this is the way it is supposed to be. I am not a zebra person so a lot of that stuff did not appeal to me personally. I have so many plaid shirts already, there was nothing new and exciting for me. If they don't have anything now, I can only wait for pop backs or holiday returns. This also means that there probably won't be much to go on sale. Yikes!

    5. Doodle, sounds like a success for JCrew. About time! Happy customers and no long-drawn out sale season. Now we all just need to adjust our budgeting!

    6. I agree Doodle. Nothing to buy and I've been looking for sale items and the new releases.

  8. Ordered the skinny stretch cargo pant in pine forest as well as the velvet camisole in the dark amber. I love the pants. I am a true size 16 and I ordered the 32 and they fit so well, hugs all the right areas. My only issue is that the crotch sits low but I think that is a style...one that I'm not a huge fan of. I will be buying more but if you have the low crotch look, I would opt out. Other than that they are extremely comfortable and moveable. They also have not bagged out on me and I have been on the move at work today.

The cami is still tbd for me. I'm not sure what I would wear it with or if I even love it. I think I have to try it on with a few things before I really commit. If anyone has any outfit suggestions please send them my way.

    1. I liked the velvet cami too but I don't know where I'd wear it. Covering it with a jacket takes away from the style of the cami, but I don't need to wear spaghetti straps in winter. It was an easy pass for me, even though I think it's really cute.

    2. I ordered the velvet cami in amber..I plan to wear it with a white tissue turtleneck, straight or skinny blue jeans, and my navy Sabrina coat; for a casual look. This was thought of in my mind, so who knows how it will translate IRL...hehe. Style inspiration - Leandra Medine of Manrepeller. :-)

    3. Am I the only one who has no idea how to wear velvet? I have a blouson style dress and a Eden blazer that I've worn a grand total of once each.

      Delete
    4. Thanks for the reply ladies! I am worried about the straps in the winter and being a 90's baby I should be more into the t-shirt under a cami, but I just cant do it. If I come up with anything I will definitely share!!

    5. D*ska, I don't really either. I'm hoping the Madewell slouchy velvet top will be easier than other velvet I've owned because the style is so casual I can wear it with jeans. I have an old velvet dress that I keep hanging onto but I never wear it so I should probably find it a new home. I can't seem to figure it out. I am going to add "velvet" to my virtual Do Not Buy list lol (spaghetti straps are on that list already, for me). I love JSR's idea for styling the cami, though, I never would have thought of that. It's a really cute item, I'm sure you'll find a great way to wear it.

      Delete
    6. @JSR that's fun. I do sleeveless but never do spaghetti straps. I COULD go braless at 34a (ish) but I do prefer wearing something wi a little padding. :( strapless bras :( For summer or casual wear id just wear my usual cami-bra but I don't think it would look nice with the velvet.

I have several velvet blazers and for years when my kids were younger that would be my typical dress up outfit— blazer, tee, button down or sweater, jeans and boots. Add jewelry. Perfect for Holiday parties, family gatherings, etc.

    7. I opted for some skinny blue jeans, deep chocolate booties and a cream slouchy open cardigan. I also pulled it together with a long necklace and some simple studs. All in all I am super happy with the look!

    8. Ti'Lon Paige, that sounds really nice!

  9. I was thinking about the Lace Cap Sleeve dress at Factory as I missed the retail version but the petite only shows up in one of the colors and the fabric description reads "Poly/elastic" I'm not sure what that means...is it a new fabric or maybe something I have missed in the past? It makes me picture a lace polyester rubber band.

  10. Just got home to find the Chelsea boots in brownstone and new Liberty paisley blouse, which was promised via UPS last Friday. Pleasantly surprised that the brownstone boots in 7 fit my wide-ish toe box and high instep, despite being fashionably pointy toed. Very pretty shade of brown and 40 percent off. Most sizes still available on website in the brown. If you have narrow or normal width feet, and are between sizes, you would probably do well to order the smaller size. I think they run a bit large.
Liberty paisley shirt is beautiful and I took my regular size 2. As many have noted the Liberty bow blouse ran big and I took a 4 in that. It's nice to see the rich Liberty colors in something besides a floral. Nothing against florals--I have more than my share--but sometimes I want something for work that's not gingham and not floral. I happened to be wearing a pair of J. Crew lined(!) wool blue glen plaid trousers from 2009 and they looked great with the shirt, which has indigo, vermilion, lavender and gold accents with black and white overall print. Still waiting on button front acorn skirt that was a pop back.

  11. I received the 12T in the Stewart Plaid Martie pants as well as the 10T in the Festive Plaid button down shirt and both are wins. The 12s were a bit short in length and tight in the waist on me (you can see them in my post here )and as is the case with other 12T pants, the extra room in the rise helped them fit more at my waist and they hit right at my ankle (I'm 5'8"). The festive plaid in the talls is now long enough to layer under a sweater so I'll be keeping the tall in both sizes.

  12. I posted some pics and thoughts on my IG, @wearthislikethis. (The lady day coat, the Oxford check mini, and the colorblock pumps in satin.) all three items are beautiful.

    1. I love the oxford ck. skirt on you! Does it run TTS, I ordered a size bigger?

      Delete
    2. I ordered my usual skirt size, 00. I have a small waist though and the skirt sits high up. If I went up a size it would probably fit fine too, just a little lower, which may be more flattering for many of us.

      Delete
    3. And thank you!!! To clarify, sizing up is probably fine. If you're waist is really small relative to your hips (curvy) it will sit an inch lower. If you're straighter it will probably work better for you to size up since the waist on the skirt is very small.

    4. BTW, do you like your Gemma b/w flats? Thinking of getting them - half a size smaller?

      Delete
    5. AHH sorry I see it's the Kiki flats you have!

      Delete
    6. I tried the Gemma too! I ended up with the slingback ones in snakeskin with the cap toe and when the Kiki became available I jumped on them. The Gemma were my least favorite of the three but I liked them too. I actually took the same size in all three, my Gemma size.

  13. I wore my cashmere tunic today (an oldie but goodie) and noticed that the pilling is getting out of hand (not a knock on the quality - it's quite old and has held up well). What do you use for a sweater shaver? So worried about ruining my old school crew when quality was good!

    1. I Recommend the laundress of NY sweater comb.

    2. I like to use a 3M sanding block with a light grit. You can get them at home stores for a couple of bucks.

    3. My mom bought me an little electric sweater shaver a few years back. I was a little worried at first about damaging the fabric but it's been great so far, no problems. Takes off all the pills and the fabric looks smooth again. You can see some different models if you search "electric sweater shaver" on amazon.

    4. Last time I was at Aldi they had a larger sweater shaver with an adjustable screen--I have a teeny one from years ago but it takes forever. This one is double the size and came with batteries. I've also used cheap disposable razors. Makes a huge difference!

      Delete
    5. I use the small Evercare battery-powered fabric shaver (got at Bed Bath & Beyond). It works wonders and is super quick. You do however need a light tough as I ruined the first sweater I gave it a go with.

      Delete
    6. Yes to disposable razors. It's inexpensive and it works!

    7. Thanks everyone! Lots of good recommendations!

  14. Just got one of my 40% everything shipments. LOVE the camel regent blazer. I'm wearing my schoolboy size, though it's a different fit. Now just have to try on the rest! -lep33shops

  15. The tie neck dress in Italian wool crepe is beautiful. Lined. Darts at the bust. Some pleats at the waist to make the skirt a-line. Fabric feels nice - not a heavy wool. Not sure that I'd wear this in winter - but gorgeous for spring/summer/fall. I took my usual size 10 in dresses so tts. I got it just to try and so glad I did!

  16. Received the (petite) shift dress in multicolored tweed and it is absolutely stunning but does not fit my body type unfortunately. I took my usual dress size and it was fitted in the bust and waist but billowed out at the hips in an unflattering way and was simply too long on me (I'm almost 5'1''). The sleeves awkwardly protruded out on me too. Sad to return but can imagine it working well for taller ladies.

Also received the plaid scarf (item G0235) and love it! There's some sparkle to it which was a wonderful surprise. I've already worn it with a bright blue chunky sweater and love how soft it is. I've ordered more scarves (from the men's section) from the 40% promo and am looking forward to receiving them!

    1. Thanks for reviewing the scarf. What color did you get? I'm tempted to get the pink, but not sure how wearable this color will be for me.

    2. White navy red - it goes well with my wardrobe. The pink looks darling but I personally would find it hard to match with my closet.

  17. The Sperry for J. Crew Shearwater Buckle Boots do not run large as some reviews say. I ordered the size up and they were waaaaay too big. They come in whole sizes and I re-ordered in my regular size. I don't think they will be too small, based on how much room I had in the size up. They seem pretty awesome though. The side zips mean you don't have to fuss with the laces and buckle (they're mostly decorative). I don't think these are for deep snow because I think snow would melt right through the zipper into the inside of the boots (maybe I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a water barrier on the zipper). They seem great for a damp, cold, rainy day though, or in snow 3" deep or less.

  18. Going to return the cashmere boatneck that arrived today. The cashmere is super thin, and the drop shoulders are uncomfortable. Bummer! I was hoping for a really cozy new addition to my closet.

  19. I bought the men's oxford cocktail shirt in plaid and it is great, well made and just a bit darker than the picture. I see it's almost sold it, I wonder if it's men buying it.

    1. Elizabeth - I bought that one for myself, too. Mine is due to arrive this week so I haven't seen it IRL yet...so glad to hear that it's all I had hoped it would be! :)

    2. I also purchased two of the men's cotton-cashmere crewneck sweaters for myself, as well as one of the elbow patch solid shirts. They were an amazing deal with the 40% off, especially since the quality of the men's line is usually superb.
