J.Crew Promotes New Trend {hairy legs... ha!}

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including JCrewSS, Azra, as well as Mia & ajc (in this post), who shared the following {hysterical} news from Gawker (click here for original article).
J.Crew and the Case of the Hairy Legs
By Maureen O'Connor

October 15, 2010

Preppy clothing enthusiasts recoiled today when J.Crew put a model with hippie-hairy legs on its website. Has J.Crew found its "inner feminist"? Is a disgruntled web designer playing pranks? We reveal the startling truth, after the jump.

None of the above: Turns out these tights replicate the exact texture and appearance of super-hairy legs. These will either become J.Crew's poorest-selling item, or best-selling— Halloween is coming, after all. Maybe they could market it as a sexy Chewbacca accessory?
So it turns out that the new "look" featured on the image found on the Women's Shoes page (click here) was from wearing J.Crew's Lace Tights (Item 31350; $22.50) in Fawn. (The image is found on the top of this post.) This story has definitely traveled the web, including a spot on Perez Hilton's Coco Perez (click here) & the Huffington Post (click here).

Well J.Crew must have figured it out because they changed the photo for Women's Shoes (where this all started) to showcase the tights in Black. Smart move J.Crew, smart move. But alas, it's too late. ;)

What are your thoughts on the tights? Did you think the hosiery made the model look like she had not shaved in a year? ;)

  1. So I'm guessing these won't be showcased on Net-a-Porter?

  2. Last year I tried some similar tights in a fawn/taupe lace and one of my colleagues told me it looked like I had a fungus growing on my leg!

  3. Ohhhh, I hate it when I accidentally remember to shave my legs and forget the man legs look I was trying to achieve. These tights are the PERFECT solution. Thanks J.Crew. You're truly a purely functional brand.

  5. It's the 'French' look! LOL

I wonder if they'll run out of stock on those soon...

  6. Haha, this is too funny.
I'm surprised they went ahead and quickly changed it.

O/T: Do you ladies sometimes get sick of looking at the old photo shots for your account log-in, including those ballet flats from last fall/HO?

  7. I liked them when I saw them in the store! I hope they don't look like that on my legs in real life, as I actually do still want to buy those tights!

I know it's a joke, but still a lil nitpicky, no?

  8. Whitney - I don't think it's nitpicky at all. Someone may see these in the package and think it's great and when they actually wear them, find themselves the center of unwanted attention. IMO this is one of those great concepts that don't always translate to great execution. I'd rather read about it than pay to bomb it myself. Not every idea can be a gem and some are worth the chuckle.

  9. I myself picked up a similar pair of tights last winter. I LOVED them I thought they were fabulous, the texture the unique color, however the first time I wore them out, I had people telling me that at first they had thought I had developed some sort of awful razor-phobia all day long.
they now collect dust in the bottom of my drawer.

  10. jcrewphd, I was just thinking the same thing today about the picture at login. Time to change it!

  11. i think the lace pattern is quite lovely, but the color fawn is a really bad choice. i'm sure the color black will look great on most ladies.

  12. jcrewphd - I agree. I love J Crew, but am sincerely worried about them. They portray themselves as cutting edge, of-the-moment, but when I'm interacting with them sometimes the image of a dinosaur comes to mind. We know what happened to them.

I hope they get it together and shell out for a better functioning website. They're trying w/the different home pages, so that's something I suppose.

  14. LOL That's hysterical! How could they have thought that looked good?!

  15. How funny! I honestly hadn't even noticed them.
I'm certain they will, however, start some kind of a Halloween trend!
Hilarious! To be continued I suppose...

  19. This is a little OT, but speaking of tights... the heather grey tights that are on the front of the catalog and I think are also featured on the 'sweater weather' image on J.Crew's homepage: does anyone know what they're called? I looked through the tights section but I did not see anything that looked like them. Thanks :)

And as for the lace tights, I'm sure the fawn color would look pretty cool on a black model. I'm not shocked J.Crew didn't think of that, though.
