Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  2. Somewhat OT but a couple of interesting fashion stories circulating this morning, Victoria Secret is closing lots of stores due to poor holiday sales and Gap Group is splitting off Old Navy as its own separate company and also closing stores. I'm not surprised about VS closing stores, its message seems dated, especially as compared with Aerie and Gap Body. I have bought more Aerie items than I care to admit but can't remember the last time I looked at VS. I am surprised about Old Navy but the business decision seems to make sense, I will miss the joint checkout options though. I have also done more buying at Old Navy this year than J Crew.

    1. I was very surprised about the Gap/Old Navy split as well and will also miss the combined checkout. I buy a lot of stuff for my kids at ON, while I prefer Gap and BR for myself.

    2. Same - I've had a Gap Visa for years, but mainly use the rewards at ON for kids clothes and workout clothes. I can't remember the last thing I purchased from Gap.

      Delete
    3. what will happen with the other Gap brands? BR, Athleta, Hill City?

      Delete
    4. I read that the other brands are staying with Gap, just Old Navy is separating

      Delete
    5. Read a whole article about the ON/Gap split in the Wall St Journal...kept getting frustrated at the article, it said Old Navy consistently outperforms sister brands with it's "lower price points and catchy marketing". So sad/nostalgic about what a high quality brand the Gap used to be in the 80s and 90s.
Quote: "At its height in the 1990s, Gap stores...largely dictated the nation's casual aesthetic with its khakis and white tees. Nowadays consumers aren't willing to pay $80 for a pair of jeans, forcing the brand to rely heavily on sales and markdowns."
well, I think people just aren't willing to pay $80 for a crap pair of jeans that are no better quality than ON or Target. If Gap still made great fitting, well constructed high quality denim of yore, I'd be throwing my $80 at them.

    6. Quality has gone down across the board. I used to shop at ON for basics and kids clothes. but about 5 years ago the cheapness of the fabrics became unbearable. I stopped in the other day for the first time in years, some cute stuff, decent prices, but no sale. I feel like J crew factory is the new ON, where they used to be a bit better in quality, but now are not. Haven't shopped at Gap in 10 years.

      Delete
    7. I still shop at the Gap! There is not a lot to love lately but still manage to find decent jeans and cotton tees. The undies and pajamas work very well for me. Rarely go into Old Navy as it is just not the quality I'm looking for. They have cute styles though and if I had kids, I'm sure I'd be in there all the time.

      Delete
    8. I have a surprising # of things I like from Gap. I've been wearing their velour joggers as pyjama bottoms all winter. They are comfortable and wash/hang dry perfectly. They wear like sweats but look a lot nicer.

    9. Most of my favorite jeans are Gap jeans, and they’ve had some reasonable merino and cute eyelet pieces in recent years. But the other 90% of their stuff (poly blend knits, short dresses, denim shorts, GapFit, GapBody) doesn’t interest me.

      Delete
    10. @bythelake I am finding that ON and JCF are pretty close in quality when it comes to basics, their pixie pants and shorts are pretty similar and I actually think ON tees last longer. JCF has also pretty much eliminated their petite offerings and ON offers full runs of sizes in just about everything. If I need a simple shift dress, I can usually find something at ON but not at JCF anymore.

  3. No visit for me as I am headed to visit my parents near Hilton Head this weekend/next week. Their closest J.Crew is Savannah which recently closed and there is an outlet nearby which I may stop at but it's not a priority. I did order the leopard pleated midi this morning which is marked down and almost a full size run back in stock - it's $95 before the 50% off and I've had this on my wishlist for a while.

I also emailed for a PA on a few items I ordered earlier this week and are arriving today - the pink rain jacket and the denim midi. Does anyone have the perfect rain jacket? Jacket was an impulse buy -I have an awesome Burberry hooded rain jacket but it's black so thought I could use a more spring-y color although I really don't NEED it. If they honor the 50% off sale though it'll be $40ish which isn't bad at all. Not sure how the denim skirt will work out but giving it a try.

    1. Hi Anne - I tried the perfect rain jacket but ended up selling it (I have an old Lands' End Kids rain jacket that I like better). I felt like the sizing was tough for me, as the reviews state the sleeves are short and since I have long arms they felt REALLY short (you can see a lot of the model pics have the sleeves scrunched up). I'm usually a S but ordered XS which felt fine... but maybe the S would've also been fine? The funny thing is that whenever I'd walk the zipper pull would flap around and make a click-clack, click-clack sound which drove me nuts. Ha! The colors are nice, though - and if you're just looking for a fun windbreaker of sorts I think that this would be fine. Have fun escaping snowy NY!

      Delete
    2. To echo silver_lining, the perfect raincoat was not perfect for my long arms, which I was expecting. Instead I wear bright yellow Totes hooded raincoat, which is exactly what I wanted for years but could not fine. Oddly enough, when my grandmother died at age 99 this summer, I found one hanging all by itself on a hanger on the hanging line she had set up in her basement. So of course I treasure it. The perfect raincoat wasw also a little too thin for what I wanted. It is more of a windbreaker in my opinion, although certainly popular and well purchased while I worked at J. Crew.

Have fun on your trip! No snow boots for a week? I can't even imagine!

      Delete
    3. I bought a knock off of the rain jacket at Target last fall for $40. It looks just like the J Crew version. It's not totally rain proof (have a NorthFace for the real rain) but the Target one worked great for a trip. I have a navy polka dot rain coat from Talbots that I love for spring. They have a cute new version out too.

      Delete
    4. I agree that the sleeves aren't long, but this is fine for my short arms and I love my perfect raincoat. Living in the South where it's warm(ish) all year, this has been the right weight for me and I wear mine all the time. Get compliments on the color!

      Delete
    5. Thanks for all of the insight and suggestions! Sounds like this might be a return based on arm length, I'll report back tonight. I really don't need it - I already have the long field jacket in navy and my black Burberry - was thinking a more spring colored jacket would be a good addition but not necessary.

Cheri - yes, excited to escape the snow for a bit! It won't be hot, but it'll be warmer than NY :)

      Delete
    6. Thank you for mentioning the leopard pleated midi! I've had that on my wishlist too. Can't wait to get mine!

    7. @Cheritheberry, Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww that is so sweet that you wear your Granny's jacket. I have a crocheted sweater with slightly ballooned sleeves in dark blue silk that my grandmother made at least 75 years ago (I'm guessing 1930's-40's). The wild thing is that it is totally on-trend this spring. There is a matching midi skirt. It is in great shape, you'd never guess the age. I wore it in the 1980's and now it's time has come again.

      Delete
  4. I was looking at the rain jacket in cerise but it's not available in my size and pink is Not great for me, so I'm glad I am not tempted.

I did buy two canvas sneakers I had been eyeing for spring, the red tretorns and white platform seavees. Also got the scallop edge shorts which have hovered at about this price for awhile but they're really nice and sturdy. I got the factory version last year and wore them a lot. The retail ones are a little shorter but more structured and a thicker material.

Still looking for that perfect solid ivory sweater but I'm not into all the acrylic blends, so I'm waiting. The double breasted sweater is tempting. I tried the light gray on in the store but it rang up at 73.99. At half price it's not bad but I'd wear it like a robe around the house and don't really need it.

  5. @Lynn, I just saw your comment re storing items in plastic and YES I agree. I almost sent a similar response to her when she wrote it was stored in a ziplock. That is not the way to store clothing. This is one of the reasons I don't "store" clothes. I either keep in my closet to wear or get rid of everything. I remember storing baby clothes in Rubbermaid bins and opening up a year later to find previously clean clothes had yellowed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I kind of disagree. I think yellow spots are more likely due to stains or uneven chemicals. Overtime after exposed to air and light, those areas could become more yellow than the rest. Ziplock, as they kept air out, may actually slow the process. Also I think storing merino and cashmere sweaters in individual ziplock bags is a safe way to keep both away.

      Delete
    2. So sorry to hear this Suz! Perhaps you could have told the seller nicely and did her a favor.

Keeping clothing in any type of plastic is harmful. That is why it is not recommended to keep even cleaned garments in dry cleaning bags. The clothes need to breathe.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous everything I've read disputes that.
Cheri, I was happy to not look for trouble considering the scenario!

      Delete
    4. @Suz Has - Oh, no! I have 2 plastic bins full of clothes stored in my guest room closet! Anyone have a better way to store rarely used items?

      Delete
    5. I found this: zip lock bags a no no but plastic bins lined with cotton sheets are ok. Clothes need to breathe.
I have kept my out of season clothes in smaller bins at the top of my closet but they're not air tight and it's just to keep them dust free. When I put heavier sweaters or wool I always make sure the sweaters have been freshly hand washed and dried and then I'll add some lavender.

      Delete
    6. The Laundress carries some great canvas storage bins. That's what I use.

      Delete
    7. I use canvas storage bags with zippers from Bed Bath and Beyond. I stick lavender and cedar sachets in each one and refresh them each season as I rotate items in and out. Def agree- plastic air tight bags are no good for clothes. My mom stored her old clothes like that and everything yellowed. Things she didnt store in plastic survived and still look new after 30 years.

  7. I looked this morning, but nothing tempted me even at 50% off sale. Then I remembered it's March 1!
Who's doing NSM? I know it's hard because there's 31 days but usually there's no more crazy clearance sales by March as there are in February.

    1. @eeps. I’m doing a modified NSM. It worked well for me in February, so I may as well continue. I ordered the red Tretorn I had wishlisted this morning and added the ivory as well. They are well worth $22. I’m planning to purchase a couple Liberty items when the price is right, but I’m in no hurry. I’m nursing a terminally ill pet right now, so my money is going towards vet bills this month, not clothes.

    2. NSF at J.Crew was much easier than I anticipated as there was absolutely nothing I wanted! I did make a number of purchases elsewhere, but I was happy to kick the J.Crew habit after a heavy Dec/Jan of purchases. So I’ll be continuing into NSM, and unless J.Crew changes something with regard to their Canadian shipping/return charges, I can see it being a NS2019. We’ll see if the new head of the women’s line can come up with something to make me risk my shipping $$$.

  11. @Anonymous, Plastic is a definite NO NO! It does not repel moths or any type of insect. Stains will develop with items stored in plastic as it is a porous material.Again, I store items in cotton garment bags (Laundress) and sprayed with their natural wool/cashmere spray which has cedar in it. No problems ever. As far as the cashmere, if it is to be worn on a frequent basis I keep it on a shelf on acid free tissue paper folded. The others in the cotton bags again individually wrapped and folded. Of course they're kept out of direct sunlight everything is to protect from fading.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I still think zip lock is a safe way to keep clothes from moth and fading. Air free, completely sealed, individual bags, these features keep clothes from dust, oxygen, moth. Clothes "breathe" in air so fade, also may breathe in moth eggs. Zip lock is not a perfect way to store clothes, but I think it is effective. Tissue paper is not chemical free. Cedar or even moth balls not only have scent\smell, they are not as effective as Ziploc which can separate individual sweaters, separate a sweater from outer dust which may contain moth eggs, also keep moth larvae out of air to survive.

      Delete
    2. @anonymous, thelaundress.com

      Delete
    3. Just FYI, air does not fade clothing. Only UV rays can do that. I wanted to frame a silk flag if my grandfather's from WWII, but was told by a conservator that if I sealed it like that, it couldn't "breathe" and would disintegrated. Textiles and fabrics need air. There are plenty of chemicals in Ziploc bags compared to tissue paper and other fabrics.

      Delete
    4. By fade, I meant clothes gradually lose its original/new state. New clothes, even without wearing them, fade as fabric and coating oxidized in air. with my limited knowledge in chemistry, I don't get the breathe aspect of fabric. Ziploc is more chemical than paper and fabric. But it separate clothes from air and dust much better. Under normal temperature, it is chemically stable isn 't it? Also tissue paper is bleached, fabric is dyed, when in direct contact, do they have more chance to change color of clothes?

  12. No visit for me. I wander in JC every other week, but I'm not sure why. I like absolutely nothing, even at $9.99 I couldn't find anything. I still order cashmere when it is on sale, and I purchased a coat during the January mark downs, but I haven't found a thing I really liked or wanted since last fall's A.Borg prints. Boring, boring, boring, and synthetic as well. Is it just me? Others keep posting that they are loving items. Even the basics I used to love like tissue tees and ballet flats are not the same. I keep hoping there will be some fantastic new roll out or collaboration.

    5. Bythelake, it’s not just you. I think maintaining one’s loyalty to J Crew today has meant having to lower your expectations. There’s a lot of sameness in the competition too, with all the consolidation in the global contract manufacturers that make most of the garments sold by the “mall brands” in the US. Collabs like AB and even Liberty have been the source of a lot of the special items I’ve been happiest with lately, and most willing to purchase without a huge discount.

Happy to report that our friends over at BR have been knocking it out of the park lately. 100% merino and cotton or great blends of cotton/cashmere or silk/cashmere. Solid fits and great colours along with decent promos. Guess who's been getting my money lately.

I'm looking for a white or soft white block heel pump, similar to the Everlane day heel or day high heel, which is alittle more than I'd like to spend. I don't want a pointy toe.
Generally I'll wear these with jeans although it would be nice if it could work with skirts, so a 2.5" heel probably would work.

I've had my Sophia patent pumps in red (bright cerise) and black for a few years and wear them often. They didn't come in white or cream otherwise I'd be searching for them on eBay or Poshmark.
