J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Big sale update finally with additional off sale but some things are final sale. At 2 am ET sale was 2200+ and going fast. Picked up all popbacks and a pair of NB sneakers for a better price than I paid a month ago. Hoping they all ship now! For once insomnia paid off.

    1. I was up then too, home recovering from a big operation. I did get two cropped cardigans and a shirt for my hubs. Plus I called for a price adjustment on a top I bought for Mommy, a couple bras, and two pair of leggings.

I bought two half zip sweatshirts at Factory in the Spring and have now added the matching leggings. Weird the pieces were split up like that, but I am glad to have found them at super clearance prices. The leggings are 7/8 length, which I do not usually wear, but am making an exception for the nice fabric and to get the matching sets for around the house in cold weather.

    2. I was up late around midnight & took advantage of popbacks too. Finally able to order sunbather tee and everyday cashmere boatneck stripe sweater with ruffle sleeves. Saw this on Alexis' IG page & decided to try for $40. Ordered sequin floral embroidered Jackie cardigan in crimson maple from last roll out. It's on sale & extra % off applied & no FS.

From the new roll out, my favorite is the Collection wrap leather pencil skirt. Leather looks buttery soft, but not sure about coverage; looks like it may be too revealing which will limit its wearability. Will wait for a promo to try.

Most of my likes were also from the last roll out, but most have been excluded from promo, so I'll wait. It's almost 100
degrees, so hard to think about fall. Temps won't cool for another couple of months.

    3. Ugh I have been stalking thirst sunbather tee forever and have missed it every time!

  2. Loving the new arrivals! My wishlist had only two items on it and now it has fifteen! Croc Harper, silk scarf shirt, green tweed blazer etc

  3. Nothing really excited me about the new arrivals this morning, but I'm glad others have found things to love. I still dislike the 70s vibe, styling of the models and how the clothes are shown. Also several web issues like the sweater skirt shown in green but only available in black to buy, and no petite sizes. I did like one or two of the work dresses but they are super long for petite but maybe they can get hemmed. The men's side did the best job again of replicating the 1988 rollneck with the proper hem, I prefer the original hem to the women's interpretation but wish the men had more colors and the actual rolled sleeves. Also hoping for some revival of older blazer styles but didn't see anything. Catalogs always made the difference to me in terms of how things were presented, hope there is one but I also hope it just isn't the same washed out model images from the web just printed in the catalog.

  4. First impressions: there's a decent amount I like. I wouldn't wear all of it but that's just my lifestyle. (Like I don't need fancy dresses and office suits)

Disappointed there wasn't more boot/wide leg regular length jeans.

Disappointed no corduroy blazers or pants. The men have some already. But maybe I'm the only woman who actually likes corduroy?

    1. No, I like corduroy too! I still have my old brown J. Crew corduroy blazer :)

    2. Me, too. Hoping to see J Crew corduroy matchsticks again but doubting it will happen.

  5. Like the green tweed blazer, navy with white top coat, Ratti print skirt however not sure if I like the color in it, croc bag, the leopard print skirt and dress, and oversized tweed blazer in Gray which I wish they would have made in a couple of more colors. I like the oversize look and it is so popular over here. Will order all.

  6. I guess I was hoping for something newer. I feel like I have seen all this before. Maybe I'm asking too much of J Crew these days. It seems like they are sticking with what they know... just releasing new colors or slight a variation of what is already there. I'm glad that others are finding things to buy.

  7. I ordered the sherpa denim jacket and the suede crossbody buckle bag. I see now the bag is on the small side, though, so that might be a return. I was also able to get a price adjustment on the vintage straight jean in two-tone denim. Good sale prices!

  8. So much for me to love this morning! I’m ordering both colors of the pleated midis (I have previous versions and wear them once a week at least), the chunky cable sweater in pink which looks amazing, and the velvet pull on skirt which I returned last winter because I was pregnant and not fitting into anything. I’m sizing up since I’m still a few pounds up. I’m also throwing in the puff sleeve leopard top because I talked myself out of the leopard skirt since I don’t think that will be flattering on my Lear shape. I’m interested in the leopard dress and may consider that in the future. Finally, im going to try the pink poppy shoes but maybe next month. I’m disappointed my educator discount doesn’t work. Boo!

  9. Love the green blazer and the velvet mules.

  10. I really love the leopard sheath dress but will wait until it is eligible for promo...got a few nice popbacks early this am! $18 Evie heel in red, hope they ship!

    1. I have silver Evie heels at that price from a prior clearance sale. I like the mid height heel a lot. I considered the red ones too, but I now officially have too many shoes. Patent leather is so much fun, sure you will find lots of ways to wear them.

  11. I’m underwhelmed. There’s only a couple items I like, but the Point Sur stuff is not my jam. Little House on the Prairie 😂, summer of that is fine, but for fall, really?

For years September and Oct has been my favorite roll out, this time its not anymore. No more of our beloved parka vest. And Mercantile makes it? Ugh. Low quality.

The Cocoon coat has the same pockets from last year, which I find the placement of it a really bad design. And it’s not offered in petite?

    1. JSR, I agree about the cocoon pockets. you can't comfortably put your hands in the pockets - it's awkward. the one from several years ago was perfect!

  12. I was pleasantly surprised this morning but I feel like the bar has been set really low so maybe it's not taking much to impress me these days. I was happy to see some collection pieces and more shoes but I think I'm just not a fan of the current heel/toe silhouettes on some items. We're getting there. I like the colorblock midi (deciding which color - leaning yellow which I don't wear a lot of but would add something different to my closet), the light pink Cocoon coat (even though it feels too early to be looking at coats!) as well as the light pink cableknit (again...sweaters!)

I do agree with the sentiment that we're seeing a lot of the "same" items and I wonder if that's where they're heading as a strategy. Stick with the items that work (poplin dress in 10 colors, cashmere crewneck, suiting dress, etc.) It takes away from what made J.Crew special but may be the new normal.

They hopefully learned their lesson about Mercantile - no dresses to be found (that are all currently $15 in the sale section)

    1. Agreed w the low quality of Mercantile stuff. Hopefully they got the hint...

    no confirmation ?

  14. The new arrivals are fine. I don't see anything creative or new though, echoing what's been said above. Some nice office styles. I am saddened that J. Crew isn't exploring the "preppy with a twist" style any longer. I don't expect everything to look like that, but it's what drew me to the brand in the first place. Saturated colors, feminine silhouettes, and a splash of uniqueness. I read about the rebranding and maybe they think this won't sell anymore. I may need to take a break from checking the website.

  15. I don't know that I've ever been this disinterested in J.Crew. The rollout did nothing for me...there were a couple sweaters I thought were okay, but I prefer tops to be at least 25" in length and all I saw was a sea of 22" and 23".

The overall aesthetic is just so unappealing to me. The models look very young and disheveled and the styling is uninspiring.

This article is harsh but gives some insight into the fall relaunch: https://putthison.com/a-new-j-crew-is-coming-and-its-probably-going-to-suck/

So, basically they are doubling down on their current strategy that has led to 15 straight months of no profit.

    1. Thanks for posting Violet. I was hopeful that the new designer would help turn things around but in reading this I am no longer the customer they are looking for. I am more prep than boho and definitely want better quality fabrics and am willing to pay more for them.

    2. This strategy won't work. If we all wanted to shop at Zara and The Gap, we would.

    3. I just don't understand it. Why not let Madewell be the supercool perpetual-road-trip brand, J.Crew be classic preppy-with-a-twist, and Factory/Mercantile be the affordable classics? Offer that amazing cashmere they used to sell (I would seriously give anything for old school quality J.Crew cashmere again) at retail and then the everyday cashmere line at Factory.

I agree with CEO James Brett that not everyone wants to dress New England preppy, but that shows brand ignorance in my opinion. J.Crew at its best walked that line between preppy and edgy. They weren't full on Ralph Lauren or Vineyard Vines. They were classic and preppy but also modern and cool.

    4. This collection is not from the new designer yet. I think spring will be her first one.

    5. @sega61, that's the thing, I don't think they want us as customers anymore. The further J.Crew goes down this path it is evident to me that they think "we" are in the minority and instead they would rather design for the fast fashion crowd. I'm not a marketing expert, but that's what it seems to me they are doing. I still find things to buy, but I have to say it's getting harder for me to find places to shop.

    6. Thanks for sharing. Though the article doesn't give me much hope it is on point. Who needs another low price boring basic retailer, and I'm sick of the drastic quality decline. ( I don't know why they don't see this as a terrible move) Regardless, I'm still hopeful the new head designer will add her voice. I am (or was) a huge Anthropologie fan as well as J Crew and would consider my style neither preppy nor bohemian, but modern, vivid, and professional. Between Anthro, J Crew, some Madewell, some Target and a few boutique purchases I built a great wardrobe. I hope J Crew can still perform. I wasn't thrilled with this roll out, but I actually liked the Abigail Borg clothes and a few other things from the last one, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    7. HollDoll,
My thoughts exactly, and I am in marketing for what that counts in all of this : ) I've wondered for some time if the demographics are against the mid-level type retailers I grew up wearing. Am I the only one who remembers being able to buy real Harris tweed blazers at the Limited back in college? There used to be so many well-made clothes for reasonable prices and it seems they're gone now. Such a shame. I just dropped over $300 for a pair of lined wool Brooks Bros. pants because my 2007 120s wool gaberdine pair was too snagged to continue. (nasty screw that stuck out of my old computer keyboard tray and not J. Crew's fault on the snags)

    8. Thank you for sharing the article. I agree w/Violet...that comment shows brand ignorance. J. Crew is a preppy, aspirational brand. Just because most of the nation seems to be in athleisure, we don't all want *that* either.

    9. Mary G, I remember the quality clothes at the Limited in the mid-80s! I kept a pair of pleated, cuffed wool trousers from the Kenzo collection for 25 years to see if they ever came back, and I hope some girl is enjoying her retro pants from the Goodwill. The Limited used to offer beautiful 100% wool overcoats in amazing colors.

  16. I'm surprised by another season of velvet. Is it really still "in"?

    1. Velvet says winter to me, and mainly holiday winter. Definitely not September.

    2. I’m betting November and December will be oversupplied with bathing suits and coverups. Recommending grabbing velvet now; plenty of time to reconsider.

      Delete
    3. I though the same thing. I like velvet but very sparingly.

    4. I got a surprising amount of wear out of my Velvet Tank from last year. I wore it with the Going-Out Blazer for a dressy occasion and a denim jacket for casual. The third layer cuts the “cliche” factor I think, esp when the cut is classic. Not sure I could pull off a velvet wrap dress for anything but a holiday party.

  17. Aside from the balloon sleeve merino turtleneck, anything else I like I pretty much already have in some form, which I'm not complaining about at all. The full length wide leg crepe pants are nice but they show them cropped, it seems. I like the pointy slingbacks and the brocade mules. Also like the oversized blazer in herringbone but have a similar hacking jacket in the same color which probably is a little more flattering since the waist is nipped in.
I did order the poly sleeveless top with ladder trim in black, two sizes just in case, and the glitter pool slides for a,few bucks to keep by my back door.

    1. Every time I look at the 50% off sale there's more stuff. Prices are bizarre too, there are still some things more $$$ than they had been, but for $4 I also got the pink pool slides because they're just so ridiculous. They remind me of shoes sold at a discount store that you get out of a bin.

  18. I found quite a few things to wish list and placed a fairly large order to try; most of which I'm sure will go back for one reason or another. I ordered the perfect rain jacket (H701) in bright cerise, glitter Chelsea rain boots (J9750), croc-embossed leather medium pouch (J9593), medium pouch in embossed animal print (G7703), and three pairs of trouser socks; all of which were eligible for the promo. I also ordered the high rise toothpick jeans in indigo polka dot (J8857), everyday cashmere cropped cardigan (K3746) in crisp berry, and 1988 roll neck sweater in dots (J6404) in dusk ivory; none of which were eligible for the promo, but I want to see/feel these things IRL. Will report back if anyone is interested. :-)

  20. I was happy to see what I think is an improvement, still wish they’d come out with nice dresses. While I liked various items, my closet is bursting so I’m trying to restrain. I ordered my hubby some jeans, for myself I only ordered a solid shirtdress (although I’m nervous about sizing), a perfect fit l-s tee and some clip on earrings because I’m pretty excited about Jcrew offering that option since I’ve never pierced my ears.
I like a couple of sweaters including the balloon sleeve turtleneck but it’s still a heat wave here so I’ll wait. The wool blazers look nice but I rarely wear the ones I have.

    1. I Love clip on earings. but I must have missed them/? What style /colour were they???

      Delete
    2. If you look through the earrings there are a few clip on options (or search ‘clip on’). I preordered the colourful floral hoop earrings in clip on but I don’t see them online anymore. Also am trying the floral statement earrings. Not sure if they will be too big for me but I was excited to see clip ons :)

      Delete
    3. thank you!...i have pierced ears. i prefer clip ons as i can't wear any with nickel in the posts of reg earings.

    4. Clip ons are so hard to find, I hope that you find some that you like!

  21. Ordered the Collection Leather A Line Midi as well as the leather pencil skirt. I prefer the design of the pencil skirt which looks alluring but not over the top which I like and have no qualms wearing this in a business environment. I travel extensively internationally for business and frankly run my own race as to how I dress. My concern is “quality and the type/source of leather. Buttery soft means nothing to me and at this price point it better be very good.

  24. Very disappointed there isn’t a professional wool suit in this rollout. You can’t even buy lined wool pants from other mid-range retailers anymore, and often higher-end brands stop at size 12/14. Hopefully we’ll get something later this year.
