J.Crew In-Store 20% Coupon

A big "thanks!" to Jenn_Brak who let us know in the post "Questionable Item of the Week: Friendship Bracelet for Men" that some J.Crew stores are giving customers a 20% off (in-store) coupon card as an "apology" for their recent website issues.

Some interesting points about this coupon card:
  • The coupon card expires 8/14/08
  • The card's message is similar to the apology on the website
  • Coupon is not valid with any other promotion
  • The store manager received the cards this past Saturday
  • Jenn_Brak received the card from the store clerk after she mentioned their recent website issues to him
I think it is great that J.Crew is taking this step to make customers happy. I have to say I am thrilled about the coupon card being offered. :) (Again, "thank you!" to Jenn_Brak who was kind enough to share with us about this coupon card.)

Do you think you will stop by a store to pick up a card and peruse the new fall items? Did you receive this coupon card this weekend already?

P.S. This post made it to one of the posts over at Racked called: "Apology Coupons" by Izzy Grinspan (published August 4, 2008). Click here for the link. :)

  1. I went to a store today and didn't see any sort of cards. Am I supposed to ask for it or tell someone about my website troubles?

  2. Aly: I don't think it is clear whether these store coupon cards are being kept "behind the counter" until someone mentions them or if they are freely provided. Hopefully they are being offered to all clients. :)

  3. Gah, why is J.Crew giving coupon cards to *store* customers to make up for harm suffered by *web* customers?

They should be sending these coupons via e-mail to those whose *web* orders were screwed up . . . or to entice those who haven't been willing to place a web order lately. (Of course maybe that's the point--they're offering store coupons because they don't want more web traffic right now.)

I imagine there are exceptions, (such as red phone orders) but I don't see how store customers were hurt during the update.

Add this to my list of the way J.Crew discriminates against web-only customers.

  4. hexicon - I totally agree with you. It discriminates against people who are nowhere near a b&m. I also believe an overture would better be made via email to customers who have placed orders in the past 2 months. IMO, it's a bit rude that the coupon expires only 11 days from the day they're giving it out. Silliness.

  5. I completely agree with every comment thus far, although I'm not complaining if I get a coupon when I get into the store. I was there yesterday and the was no card AND no sales on.

  6. I was in my store on Sunday and did not receive or see any kind of card. I am going to call when they open this morning to see if it was available, and ask if I can get it applied to the purchases I made...I did get the educator discount, so maybe the associate I had didn't realize the manager allows them to both be used, and didn't offer the coupon...not sure...it would have been really nice to have.

I tried on just about everything in the store, but only came out with a few items:

I got the Silk Jersey Pleated Top seen Here . I purchased it in Poppy and Black...LOVE IT! I would like to have it in more colors, as it is comfortable yet chic...perfect for my lifestyle! Took XS.

I also purchased the Dream Tie Cardigan seen Here . I got it in Navy in size XS...yes, I paid full price - educator discount, but think it is worth it, as it is so pretty, soft, and very flattering on my figure. I actually like it better than the Tartine Cardis I tried on...weird, as I didn't expect that.

I also purchased two tanks: white and gray/silver, 3 belts: Gold, Serengeti, and the Men's belt in Cognac that can also be worn as a women's belt. I also bought a pair of the fave-fit cropped chinos in Navy...they were on sale, but not with any extra % off, as the 40% sale was no longer valid. :(

I tried on the Velvet Ecole and hated it, they didn't have the other two. They didn't have the hammered silk tanks, either. I tried on the Cord skirt but was between a 2 and 4, so I passed, as it didn't fit right in either size. The Denim Pencil Skirt was very cute, and I will probably get it when it goes on sale.

    My serengeti belt was purchased over the red phone, and I also ordered a pair of the fave-fit cropped chinos in White, and the Serengeti capri sandals over the phone when I got home. The rep gave me the 30% plus my educator 15% and free shipping on that order...hoping for the best...time will tell. ;

  7. hexicon- I agree completely! They should email the people who have made online purchases recently. I am 3 hours from the nearest J Crew store, so online shopping is the only option for me.
I have made a few purchases lately, and after reading everyone's horror stories I am nervous that they will show up incorrect, or not at all! On the other hand, if I had a 20% off coupon, I would TOTALLY buy a few more things that I have been eyeing. I think that they are missing out on a lot of cash by NOT offering some type of percentage off to all of the web users that have been so patient with this update1

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree with hexicon...these coupon cards should be mailed to any patrons who ordered from the website over the past month at the very least. And why are they behind the counter? Why should patrons have to ask for them?

    ReplyDelete
  9. alexis: Agree with you 100%. These cards should for everyone. Why not be mail them out to everyone (atleast all card holders). I dont think we need to say anything about problems to qualify for the card. Just give it out to us.

    ReplyDelete
  10. jolly rounder & erika: completely agree. email the cards details to us. they know who had issues and placed orders throughout this upgrade fiasco. better still just give to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow - I am actually shocked by these reponses! Totally understand that things need to be righted with the web cutomers, but as we have all discussed before, they are just not able to handle it yet, so why go there? Also, we are not the average customers. For J. Crew to distribute these cards to every person who walked in the door would be foolish. They have already lost so much money and with no sale merchandise available, they have the opportunity to sell some full priced items! Don't mean this to be a lecture, but I am surprised by you guys. We have asked for something to be done for the last several weeks, they think of a discount that they can handle right now and will not alienate further customers and this is the response?

    ReplyDelete
  12. They should just email them. It's a good business move. Maybe they'll do that today. I hope so!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree with Jenn_brak. I'm sure that when they are able to handle web orders again, that there will be a discount offered. If they're still having problems with web orders, then it would create more problems for them by having lots more orders. However, I don't know how I feel about not giving them to all customers in store. I don't like to complain in my b&m because none of them had anything to do with it. So, I probably wouldn't have mentioned anything until after reading about the cards. I'll be in my b&m tomorrow to return an item (rec'd 2 of same) and I'm hopeful that I'll receive a card so that I can make more purchases on fp items.

  14. Like everyone else I'm with Hexicon. That being said I was given 20% on my next order by a CS on the phone Saturday. When I asked about an order from July 1 she said "You've been waiting over a month, I want to give you20% off on your next order, I'll make a note on your file, just reference this order."

So plan to buy the wool flannel pants and a couple of merino wool sweaters. With the 20% and my gift cards it'll work out to almost 1/2 price.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hexicon & Gigiofca & Jessica & Erika: I actually agree with you in that I think that it would probably be better of J.Crew to offer something like this to just customers affected by the web but maybe not right now because of the point Jenn_brak made. Maybe they could offer something that says "in a month from now, when our issues should be resolved, enjoy this offer of ..." This way web customers affected by this know they are valued.

I will also add that I think it is a nice move on J.Crew's part to offer these cards even if only some customers receive them. :) It just shows they are trying to make up for lost time.

Jenn_Brak: I do think you have made an excellent point in that J.Crew can't really offer something for web users right now since their system probably can't handle it. But I also don't see any harm in offering the card to all those in the stores (for the reason Math Teacher gave). Especially if its offering 20% off full price merchandise. :)

FabulousFloridaMommy: Happy to hear about your shopping trip! I hear you on the velvet Ecole- looks great on the model- not so much on me. ;)

Mom-NYC: I hope that the cards are for all customers who are at the store as well. :)

JCrew Guy in Canada: The merino wool sweaters are an excellent buy- I think those are just classic pieces in any man's wardrobe! :)

  16. I didn't realize that J Crew gave a 15% educator discount. Could you please explain that to me? Thanks for your help.

    ReplyDelete
  17. All - Sorry to seem like I was lecturing. I was just so excited to get home and pass the tip along. Then it didn't seem to make anyone happy the way I thought it would!

I actually didn't complain to the store. I was asking them how the website challenges were affecting them at the store level. They had some pretty interesting obeservations. For all the differences between their web and stores, this is a VERY tightly knit company. That is when he offered the card.

  18. Anonymous at 8:25AM: If you are a teacher, show them some form of proof and J.Crew will give you an educator's discount of 15%!

  19. Jenn_Brak: I personally don't think you were lecturing at all. I think you made an excellent point that J.Crew's web system can't really handle a promotion like that.

I also am very grateful that you shared with us your experience and the coupon card. I really do appreciate it. :)

  20. If they email them, I have no hope of getting one. I'm one of those customers who never gets the emails, no matter how many times I opt in. I was going to place an order today. I think I will ask for the discount over the phone.

  21. Thanks Alexis for the educator information. I had no idea!! Also thanks for the other shopping tips....what great info here!

  22. OK, I hate starting my Monday this way. I am sure that my blood pressure is through the roof after reading that there are coupons being given to IN-STORE customers. Not only do I feel that EVERYONE should be given these coupons, but to discriminate against web customers makes my stomach churn. I have pointed out before, and will point out yet again, my purchases last year (which totaled around $20,000) were ALL made on the web...do you hear that Mr. Drexler??? Grrrr.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the news about a coupon card is positive! I am thrilled that some of us are receiving coupons. Even though I may not benefit from it, I know I am happy that fellow J.Crew Aficionadas are. :)

I also agree with many of you that web customers are totally being neglected by not being offered this coupon.

But as mentioned in one of the articles on this blog (Yes, Another Article About the Website ;)), J.Crew really can't offer a promotion that "would drive a rush of traffic that would overwhelm a system under construction".

I think it is smart of J.Crew to hold off any more pushes to the web until things are straightened out. :)

I am sure once the whole website system is functioning properly, J.Crew will give its online customers some type offer. So far, they have been trying, and I think that is great! :)

  24. Alexis, I was in a factory store yesterday (Flemington, NJ) and did not receive a card. I imagine that it is for the full-price b&m shops! One thing I did want to mention because I know that there has been some question on what is in a factory store.... First, ALL PLEASE NOTE AS OF LAST WEEK, FLEMINGTON IS A WOMEN-ONLY FACTORY STORE! I am not particularly a fan of the factory shops as they are known for have stuff made specifically for these stores--- well, yes, there were variations of jewelry, belts, etc. that were not in the b&m stores--- BUT there was a large amount of items that are b&m-catalog items! :) They do not have the Ecole jacket, but for those of you who simply adored the Bella and miss it-- the Bella is the "it" jacket of the factory shops! I was thrilled as I had purchased a Bella or two last year-- and wished I had gotten in that heather pumpkin color..... The quailty is exact (I did a thorough compare to my retail Bella) and it is $168! If interested, Cindy of the Flemington store was great and very helpful-- I am sure if you call her she will gladly assist.

While the Ecole, may look simply fabulous on some, it was not an "it" for me and glad that I could still get the Bella (again!) :)

  25. I just called the manager at my store, and she said they did get them...I asked if I could bring in my receipt to get the price adjustment, and she actually took my receipt info to credit the 20% back today, without me having to go back to the store. I would say to definitely ask for the coupon when you go in...it does appear if the stores are getting them.

On another note: I do also feel that customers not near a store should also be eligible for a discount like this, and I would suggest that if you want to place an order, call and mention that coupon, that you don't live NEAR a store, but would like to purchase regular price items and receive the discount...it's only fair, afterall, since you cannot get to a store. I think it's worth a try...you just never know...you may get an accomodating rep.

Other news: my Final Sale homepage STILL shows EXTRA30 on Final Sale, so you could try calling to ask for that, too.

  26. Thanks for sharing Jenn Brak! I can't wait to go to the store now and see some clothes and get the coupon.

  27. I was in a JCrew store on Saturday, and while returning some items, the cashier asked how my web experience had been. I said, "Well, for these orders [the ones I was returning] it was fine, but I was on today and the site didn't load." She just smiled and said to try it again later that day. No offer of a coupon.

    ReplyDelete
  28. FFM: I am trying to put a more positive spin on my morning (after realizing that I am not in the taget market for the 20% in-store coupon) and was wondering what you are going to wear with your navy Dream Tie cardigan which I am going to treat myself to even though it is FP. I really do love it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just to clarify my remarks (because I did feel a wee bit like I was being lectured even though Jenn_brak clarified that wasn't her intent), my original post did note that presumably they were offering *store* coupons because the *web* couldn't handle the traffic right now.

I also don't feel that *I* in particular deserve a coupon bcause I placed half a dozen web orders for sale items in the last month and nothing was screwed up other than being delayed a bit (knock wood). So I actually would feel a little strange about calling up and asking for a discount. But, as a web customer I am in the category of customers who were generally affected by the site problems, and J.Crew knows where to find me.

Rather, my concern is that this is part of a pattern and pratice of giving *store* customers goodies that *web* customers never see. True, as we see from this site there is a lot of overlap between the two groups, but the shoppers who were harmed by the "upgrade" are those who shopped on the web, many of whom can't get to B&M stores.

As Alexis noted, if they didn't want to overwhelm the site right now, the apology e-mail could hav included a coupon for use at a specified time in the future.

I can see why some think that I should be more appreciative that J.Crew is making the effort, but when that effort specifically *excludes* me I hope you can see why I'm not impressed.

  30. ffm/jcrewjunkie: I too treated myself to the dream tie cardigan---in honey glaze...... do you think we can start to wear now? I am thinking the cooler summer evenings? The sweater makes a great "summer jacket".....

    ReplyDelete
  31. nicole r.: I am DEFINITELY going to start wearing my dream tie cardi now!:)

jcrewjunkie: With the navy dream tie cardigan I am wearing a white tank underneath and pairing that combo with my Gap Essential Jeans, Khakis, or Wide Leg Pants in Cool Graphite (gray).(That combo looked pretty with the yellow cord skirt, too). I will also wear it with my gray/silver tank and white cropped chinos with silver capri sandals and silver accessories. It also looks pretty with the Silk Jersey Pleated top in Poppy and white capris or pants. There are numerous colors of tank you can wear under it, and all can be paired with khaki chinos, white pants/capris, gray pants/capris, or denim. Colors such as kelly green, aqua, yellow, pink, camel, or orange...all will look really pretty with the navy. :) I will make a couple of Polyvore sets later to show exactly what I mean. :)

  32. I do agree that store customers are given greater discounts than web customers. My b&m is downtown and I rarely get down there once school starts. It's not a long trip, but I hate the hassle of finding and paying for parking. I do most of my shopping online and I don't understand why store and web prices aren't the same. I also shop Ann Taylor Loft, and their prices and extra %'s always coordinate. However, I do understand why they're not offering a % online; they can't deal with the orders now. I believe that when they feel this is straightened out, there will be a code for web purchases. On the other hand, a code that can be used in the future would go towards re-establishing good will with web customers. I love the $25 card that the Loft and Gymboree offer, which is to be used at a future date. Perhaps, J Crew could offer something like that.

Sorry for the long post and I hope this didn't come across as lecturing. I am a teacher, so I know how I can sound from time to time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was in a b&m store on Saturday ( 8pm),and did inquire when web problems will be solved ( completely unware of coupon or the "code question":). They said that they all hope for the best, but no one knows when it will be a complete fix.No mention or offer of coupon whatsoever. As I have made a rather substantial purchase( one in store and one over the red phone), I am dissapointed. I can't fathom to call manager and ask of the discount to be applied reptrospectively. As I have said before, our local CC is not very accomodating. I am SURE they will say "no", so I don't even bother.
FFM,great for you! I should move to Florida.

  34. Nicole R: Thanks for letting us know that the Bella jacket is being offered in the factory stores. I just love my bella jackets so much! It's too bad they don't bring them back in the regular B&M stores. :)

Anonymous at 10:00 AM: Too bad you weren't given the coupon. Seems weird too since it sounds like the SA brought up the web experience.

JCrewJunkie: I like the positive spin you are talking about: you should totally treat yourself to the tie cardigan (its absolutely beautiful!) :)

Hexicon: I totally hear where you are coming from. If my only means to J.Crew was via online, I would be beyond frustrated right now. I also really believe J.Crew should send an apology email to those whose orders were affected by the system upgrade with a future-use offer. I think its important for J.Crew to let their online-only customers know they are always appreciated.

Nicole R & FabulousFloridaMommy: Congrats on the cardigan!!! :)

Math Teacher: I know what you mean about prices in-stores should match prices online. I will say that I have noticed in the past few weeks that J.Crew has been trying to do just that- honor online prices in-stores. So it is definitely a step in the right direction for them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Slastena: It's too bad that they didn't offer you the coupon considering you bought a lot.

It really makes wonder now how J.Crew decided to introduce & distribute those coupons in stores: maybe they are only allowed to pass out X amount per store per day. :)

  36. This is OT but not sure where to ask it - how in the heck do you get that stickly glue left from the size sticker off your flipflops??? It's driving me crazy!

  37. I agree with jcrewjunkie and hexicon:
This coupon is discrimination on all fronts. Why I was not given it even though it was available ( if store got them on Saturday, by 8 pm they surely have been in). Who decides which customer gets it,which one is not? Why web customers are excluded? They can phone their orders in instead of"webbibg"them, right?

If coupon is offered- it should be offered to everyone, not select few.
Totally unfair in my opinion! So,no,I am not excited it exists.

And how about those customers(like me) who cannot bring themeselves up to call and ask for them?
I just can't , and I feel I miss a lot on J crew insentives because of that.

  39. GooGone works wonders. I always keep it on hand and it lasts forever you only need a little bit to get the job done. I believe you can find it at Walmart and Target.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just got off the phone with the Chester, NJ store and point blank asked about the in-store coupon card. The CSR said that they got them in the mail but there was no clear direction noted on what to "do with them"-- and it was not until the store manager called to find out..... So that may be the confusion.... They got them in the mail with no clear direction as to the critera themselves..... She told me that she would hold one for me--- so I am stopping by tomorrow on my way home...... :)

  41. FFM, Nicole: I received my dream tie cardigan in heather silver today and I love it!! Love the Tartine cardigans too! Can't wait for the weather to cool down so that I can start wearing them.

  45. JCrewbug: I use a sticky stuff remover like GooGone. I also sometimes use baby oil.

Nicole R: Thanks for clearing up some confusion on why some customers weren't told about the coupon card while others were. Also, congrats on getting one tomorrow! :)

  48. I agree with everyone who has said that J Crew should hold off on a web promotion until the site is able to handle it. That said I am a little jealous that those with access to a store are getting a discount becuase the web customers had trouble ordering.

I am actually thinking of driving to the US to my nearest j Crew store to use the coupon. There are some fall items I want and some bloggers have mentioned they are cheaper in store so with the coupon it will be worth the two hours each way (I hope :)) I realy want the bateau sweatshirt and someone said it was on promotion for 39.99.

I really don't understand why the web prices are more expensive. i wanted a skirt and it was 39.99 on the web (no discount on Thursday) and I called the store and got it for 23.99 with the in store discount. I just need to go and pick it up now. If my order actually arrives at my friends house in the US I will have a reason to drive down (it still says open nearly teo weeks later).

  51. Hi! I have been keeping up with the blog over the past month or so, but this is my first comment.

I went to my local store yesterday, but was not offered a coupon.

I did see and try on the ruffled jacket that was mentioned in another post. I inquired about it and was told that it is a herringbone Fiona jacket (w/long sleeves). They had a bright pink/red color, pale pumpkin color, and a charcoal black. I found it to be pretty boxy on me but it was definitely cute. Might be a sale purchase if it lasts until then. :)

nicole r. - thanks for the info about the Bella jacket at the factory stores!

FFM - I am really enjoying your sets on Polyvore! You are giving me a lot of great ideas. Thanks!

  52. SHIP-2389 still works. I just used it on the Paintbrush Floral Belle Skirt, along with the $75 in gift cards I got from J.Crew during the the "Webgate" fiasco. With my student discount, I will get the skirt for about $10.

I tried the skirt on in the store last week and I really liked it, but I was in a hurry and decided not to buy on impulse. I regretted not getting it, but I wasn't sure when I would get back to the store, and so with the free shipping code I thought why not?? I can't wait for it to arrive :) It's such a pretty skirt!

  53. It would have be nice to get a coupon, even to use at a later date.

I have yet to receive a single item I ordered from them, sale or otherwise since June. I have heard every excuse to date for the delay in orders - I've been offered an extra 20% off an item that they had cancelled and then had that same order cancelled again within a few days, I've been sent gift cards and then charged for them on my cc(!!) had CS promise to send two orders expedited to Canada but never received, orders cancelled because, according to CS they were out of stock (when I mentioned that they were still available online, they seemed surprised and replaced my order(!)and on and on...

I have faint hope that I will see any of the orders, I guess I could drive down to Minneapolis as this is my closest JCrew but it's about an eight hour drive!

I will be looking at other online sites for purchases in the future, I have placed many orders with JCrew and they were always reliable, even if CS on the phone were able to give me some indication of what is happening I would continue to wait this out but I am calling to cancel all my orders and look elsewhere. I should post as "FED UP".

    ReplyDelete
  54. Liana: I know what you mean about not understanding why stores and online offered the same items at different prices. It really frustrated me too! :)

I use to find "it depends" on prices being more expensive in stores or online. Some times in-stores were cheaper, but most of the time I found better deals online (especially with more variety and sizes).

I notice J.Crew has been trying to fix the discrepancies in prices by allowing stores to match online prices (something they had not done before). I admit this is something they should have done from the beginning, but I am happy to see they are doing this now. :)

Pink1: Sorry to hear you weren't offered a card. Maybe the SA didn't know if they could distribute them like Nicole R. mentioned.

Traci: Welcome- We love to hear from all J.Crew Aficionadas! :) Thanks for also clarifying the mystery ruffle jacket as the Fionna.

Michelle: Thanks for letting us know that code still works! :) Also congrats on getting the floral belle skirt for $10- that is an excellent price!!!

Upnorth: Your situation sounds just awful. I can't believe they charged you for the gift cards they offered to you as a gift. That really is unacceptable. :(

  55. I just came back from the Madison Ave store. I bought $200+ worth of items and no one offered me 20% off. I'll give them a call.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Since the coupon cannot combined with any other promotion, do student and educator discounts count as another promotion?

By the way, I called my local b&m and they told me that I can come and pick up a coupon as long as I requested one from a staff member. They said there was no limited quantity, so there was no need for them to put one on hold for me.

  57. I have been in my b&m almost every other day and no mention of 20% off card. I have also been doing A LOT of complaining to them about the web-site. I buy SOOO much from them, too. And yet, no offer. If they received them after I was in the store, I would have imagined that they should have called me. I have befriended many of the SAs and Managers, everyone working in that store knows me by my name. So, I would be a little disappointed that I would have to call them and ask for it and not the other way around.

That said, I still may call them and ask if they got them.

  58. Wow, it sounds like the stores are all over the map when it comes to the coupons. I went into the 45th & Madison store and went to the register to ask for one. The guy behind the counter said they had them, but they were not "giving them out." They were kept at point of purchase and to be scanned by the cashier for a purchase if a customer has had "website issues." There wasn't anything I wanted to buy at the moment, but I was hoping to get a card to bring back and use at another time. I guess if I was buying something then and mentioned website issues and asked for the discount they would have applied it?

On a related note, the guy said the student/educator's discount is now at 15% (almost as good as the 20% and for anyone with a school ID) but will probably be dropped back down to 10% for back-to-school time.

  59. vivian: I would be glad to make a Polyvore set for your dream tie cardigan...I will post it later this afternoon/evening, as I am getting ready to run to the market and then need to fix dinner once I get home. :)

traci: Thanks for the compliments on my Polyvore sets! I'm really glad you like them! :)

  60. Cass: Oooh - I should call the store and ask if it's really 15% off for students, if it is I'll pick up the Tuesday trench immediately. Thanks for the heads up!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Cass: Thanks for sharing about the student discount- I made that info into its own post. :)

Webbysuzy: Congrats on your purchases! Hopefully they will honor the coupon for your purchases since they were made today. :)

Sally: I would call to see about the card. Hopefully they can give you one. :)

Aly: That is a good question. I am hoping that student/teacher discounts can be used in addition to the 20% off coupon card. (Kind of like how the student/teacher discounts work on top of the "additional % off sale"). :)

  62. With all the negative posts lately, I thought I would post what I hope to be a positive one.

I called about 9:00pm Friday night to hopefully have my first experience with a PS. The person I talked to was very nice, however definitely stressed. She asked for my name and number to have someone call me back - she didn't want me to have to wait on hold. I thought, well this is certainly thoughtful. Needless to say, I didn't get a call back. So Saturday morning, about 9:00am, I called back. I immediately got through and talked to PS Tasha. She was extremely helpful in helping me size the Starlet jacket I had been eyeing forever! I also purchased another Amelia tank - my third!

I didn't know an extra 30% was posted and she told me about the discount. I told her I had free shipping attached to one of my recent orders but didn't have the number handy. She told me not to worry about it and applied free shipping. With any luck my order will come sometime this week. I live in SC and usually get things the day after they ship out.

This is my second order since the website fiasco. My first order came with no problems so I hope this will as well.

I know the teacher and student discounts can be used in store and the red phone, but can they be used for phone/internet orders??

  63. ccbmum: Thanks!! It's such a pretty set! I love that you included the green clutch. It goes so well and adds a touch of color to the outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. math teacher: You won't believe this. My original package of tartines (black, persimmon) has gone missing - including my jeweled jelly flats, belle skirt in dark fog and a couple of necklaces. CS is asking me to wait until Friday before replacing the order.

So what I actually received this morning was the waitlisted tartine in snow, and in the rhubarb that I ordered three days after the original order. But I really love, love the rhubarb! You're right after all. So unless the deep persimmon is a core-shaking sensational red, I'm returning it! I think it's going to be more orangey than anything.

The dream tie cardigan was more beautiful than I expected, and I'm thinking of getting it on other colors.

    ReplyDelete
  65. FFM: Thanks. Can't wait to see your take on the dream tie cardigan in heather silve! I already love ccbmum's set from a week ago.

    ReplyDelete
  66. On another note: I also love the Baird McNutt georgia jacket - it's linen but in dark colors (navy and flame) the wrinkles are not very visible. At $34 it's a real steal for the quality and the flattering cut. I ordered the skirt too but it was shortshipped. I'm keeping the jacket nevertheless.

    ReplyDelete
  67. ccbmum: Love your take on the Dream Tie cardigan. I had never thought of putting the Beaded Shoe tee under it, but am going to do so now! :)

FFM: Thank you (as always) for your suggestions on what to wear with the Navy cardi...much appreciated! :)

I saw the Tartine in Rhubarb and fell in love with it. I am planning on putting it over one of the Hammered Silk tanks...probably in Nantucket Fog (not sure).

  68. I called into cs at the 1-800 # and they honored the 20% off as a one time courtesy for regular priced item. Seems like a nice gesture for all the problems we've experienced! Had to pay for shipping though... :(

    ReplyDelete
  69. vivian: The rhubarb color is so pretty! I was so happy with it. I'm going to have to try the dream tie cardigan on tomorrow while I'm in my b&m. What am I going to do if I end up loving another item? I have so many things I want right now and I'll never have enough money to get them all! :P
I can't believe (okay, maybe I can a little) that they lost your order! I thought things were going better with new items. I hope they get to you soon.

  70. I called the CS rep at my store (Palo Alto, CA) that I normally talk to and she said she hadn't heard of any type of coupon. :) So maybe they're only at select stores?

  71. Okay I called the Madison Ave store and spoke with an SA and inquired about the 20% in store promotion. I told them I was just in this morning and spent over $250 and if it's possible to have a price adjustment. She spoke with her manager and they said yes, just come back in show them the receipts. Whew!

  72. vivian, jcrewjunkie: thanks for the compliment on my polyvore set with the dream tie cardigan :) i really love that look. i have the t-shirt and jeans and similar flats, cardigan and scarf. i wish i had that green clutch though. but i've bought too much at jcrew already lately! maybe when it goes on sale ;)

The Georgia jacket says it has hook and eye closure. Is it just one at the top or all the way down? I'm thinking about ordering it. Thanks!

  74. Emily: I am not sure they are negative posts as more just posts expressing frustration. ;)

Sounds like you had an excellent PS with Tasha! Congrats on your order and I hope you receive it soon! :)

Vivian: I am so sorry to hear about your package getting lost. :( Hopefully it will arrive soon. :) I will also give the Baird McNutt georgia jacket a second look. :)

Hooray: Congrats on the order with the 20% off! That is fantastic!!!

Melanie: Interesting that the store you called did not have the coupon card. Maybe it is only available at certain stores (maybe based on "foot traffic"?)

Webbysuzy: Congrats on getting the price adjustment! That is fantastic. I am happy to hear SA was helpful. :)

Jenn_Brak: Again, thank you so much for sharing with us about the coupon card!!! :)

  77. I called CS this morning to see if they would honor the 20% off if I placed an order over the phone. I was told I could not. I called back this afternoon and talked to Donelle, one of the most friendly, helpful people I have ever spoken to. She said she would be happy to honor the 20% - didn't even have to check with a manager.

I got the Hammered Silk Tank in Bright Peacock, the Crystal-Button Birds-Eye Cardigan in Graphite Silver, the Dream Tie Cardigan in Snow, the Sparkle Plaid Tweed Pencil Skirt, the LuLu Peep Toes in Dark Cloud and a belt! It was so tempting to order more knowing I was getting 20% off. A great end to a very long Monday!

  79. Since this is the most active of today's threads, I thought I'd let everyone know that I got an ecole jacket in pumpkin donegal tweed and share my thoughts.

The color is VERY bright. Much brighter, in my opinion, than what is pictured on the site. There is a cute ruffle at teh bottom of the lining in the back. The pockets in front are kind of bulky. It's a good jacket though, and the collar doesn't swallow my face when it's turned up like the Bella does (I wear it anyway LOL).

  80. Alisha: YOU ARE MY NEW HERO!!! I couldn't stop smiling throughout your entire story! Oh that whole description was fantastic- I felt like I was right there with you. I can't believe you could see the cards and the SAs still pretended to not know about it! Good for you in being persistant- again you are my new hero for going through all that and remaining cool and calm. :)

A: I haven't ordered using the 30% off so I am unfortunately, of no help. But I really do hope you get the polka dot san telmo. :)

Tammylee: Congrats on getting the 20% honored. Its so weird how some CS employees are empowered while others are not. Let us know how the Sparkle Plaid Tweed Skirt works out. I think it is absolutely beautiful!!!

  83. Aww, thanks Alexis! (Taking a bow.) I totally forgot to tell you all what I bought! Of course, I got the Double Serge Tuesday Trench in Navy - what a great fall/winter jacket! I also picked up several of the new perfect fit tanks (pink, white, navy and slate); the tie-front dream cardigan in snow and navy; the dream ruffle herringbone cardigan (but it has crystal buttons - I know I saw it online before, but now it's not there. Any ideas?) in navy/camel; the watercolor floral rosette tank in deep atlantic; the tissue tee ruffle henley in white and dark slate. The rosette tank runs VERY large - I got a size 4, and I usually wear an 8 (I got an 8 in the piper tank and a 6 in the Seaglass Piper tank, so use that as a guide.) I also tried on several pairs of pants for fit, as I wear petites and cannot buy at the store. I have a few pair I'd like, and I am going to try to order them by phone and ask for the 20% discount since they are not available in-store. (Persistence!) I'll add these items to my newly-created Polyvore site, and then FFM can help me put together some smart outfits with her usual flair! :-)

  84. Oh, the sweater in question is the Birdseye Sara Cardigan, style 97202, in Grey/natural. It doesn't show up on the website at all anymore. Either it disappeared very quickly, or else it was pulled and my store had a few left over. Either way, it's super cute - it has the ruffle trim up one side of the placket and around the collar, along with the pearl-sized crystal buttons. And, I also got the Wide Gold belt - goes with everything!

  85. Aly: seriously, I think you were great! I am really impressed with your composure during the entire performance of the J.Crew staff pretending to not be aware of the cards that were directly behind them. ;)

  86. you go girl, aly! I have had the same type of issues. I am a frequent flyer and buy/return and also like to get a good deal, so they know me, I have found many a time a similar situation that you have, it's like they don't want to give you a deal or promotion, but it's STUPID because I would buy MORE with a deal/promotion...duh :) BUT they make you feel weird about asking for a deal or something. Maybe it's my geographic location...northeast!

  87. Anonymous at 5:52 PM: I think the Bella jackets are true to size. I am normally a size 2 and the Bella jackets I have are a size 2.

  89. First, I love this blog! I learn so much from everyone here, so a big THANK YOU to you all. I went to my local store in downtown SF and did not see any said coupon, nor was I offered one. They also did not have any of the items I came in to try on. After reading the comments here I patiently waited 20 minutes to speak to a CSR who happily assisted me with an over the phone order in which they honored the store coupon. SUCCESS! I did purchase more than I would have and maybe went a little overboard, but it felt like it was a once in a lifetime chance to score the things I wanted at 20% off. I was also able to use one of the free shipping codes that I found on this blog. Thanks a bunch!

  91. vivian: Here is my Polyvore set for the Dream Tie Cardigan in Heather Silver: Click Here . I've shown it two ways, but just like the Navy...there are numerous options when it comes to the sweater.

For me...I will not be wearing shirts with sleeves under it, but will always opt for sleeveless styles, as the arms fit snug(not too tight, but just right), and it would not look right to put a shirt with sleeves under it.

    ReplyDelete
  92. vivian, jcrewjunkie, FFM: for me a fitted t-shirt worked with the dream tie cardigan...i tried it at the store and it looked nice and didn't feel to tight. anything more than that though might be uncomfortable and look too bunched up under the sweater. but you can always experiment for yourself since i'm sure the sweater fits everyone differently. :)

  93. Aly,

Congrats on getting that 20% discount. It is kind of lame for corporate to send out the cards to the stores only to have the SPs pretend they don't exist. I have a feeling since you had everything all stacked up at the register they thought you would buy it anyway at full price and didn't want to put any dent in the store's sales figures for the day. I'm pretty sure all the stores gets $ sales targets every day or week.

I am in b-school right now and in one of my classes we talked a lot about pricing strategies. Basically, companies want to extract the full willingness-to-pay out of their customers, that's why they will have coupons/offers before to stimulate sales before having to permanently mark items down. People who are price-conscious will make the extra effort to seek out the coupons whereas less price-sensitive consumers will not bother and just pick up the item at the regular marked price.

It's funny, in the spring I was trying on one of the cashmere lily cardigans in the dressing rm at a j.crew. I was there with a friend and was saying, "it's cute, but...I'm not sure..." That's when a SP swooped in and said, "oh, did you know about the secret sale?" Essentially, for some people the cardigan was on promotion for $99, while there was no sign up and the ticket ($178) was not marked down in anyway. I had to remind the guy at the register that I had been told about the "secret sale" in order for him to adjust the price. Later I checked and the cardigan was on promotion on the website for $99, but apparently the store was happy to charge non-price-sensitive customers the full $178 and only tell hesitant customers about the promotion.

The tricky thing about these strategies is not alienating customers when they find out they have been left out of a promotion. I think J. Crew has not yet struck that balance.

    ReplyDelete
  94. ccbmum: I really think the tie cardigan is really cute with a tee, like in your set...I love your set, btw! I couldn't go up in size because the waist was then to big, so I stayed at the XS with the arms fitted...it just looks better on me, but doesn't give me the option of anything but a sleeveless shirt under it...I don't mind, though...it's way too cute to mind. GRIN

    ReplyDelete
  95. Alisha/Aly: Hi, I was wondering if you could sign under Alisha instead of Aly because I don't want people to start getting confused. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  96. FFM: it's such a cute sweater! i can see how the waist could get too big if you size up. for me it didn't hang quite right around the waist so i had to let it go since i'm an XS too...besides, i already have a cardigan in a similar color (that i haven't worn yet!) so i couldn't justify buying it since there are sooo many other things that i want...like the lucille jacket! :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous at 6:41PM: I am like you! I buy more with a promotion. I spend $7-10,000 on J.Crew each year alone- but I like to know I got a good price for the item.

Q: Thanks for the nice comments about the blog. I really think "knowledge is power" and thanks to this great community of Aficionadas (and Aficionados), we have been able to learn alot more about J.Crew and becoming more educated consumers. :) Also, congrats on getting your items over the phone with the 20% off- that is fantastic news! :)

Cass: I think your comment about the different pricing strategies was really insightful. I also think your story about the secret sale/cardigan definitely illustrates that point well. :)

  98. Wow, the more I hear about this 20%the more annoyed I am. After Aly's story I would really like to hear what directions the store managers were given on how to distribute the cards.

Right now I have nearly $1,000 of regular price fall merchandise in my cart. (I wish that J.Crew had a wish list function like Nordstrom does!) I'd planned on buying this stuff over the next couple of months as J.Crew sent out free shipping coupons.

I imagine that if I called up and made a fuss, I could get the 20% off. I'd feel stupid doing it because even though the web outage was inconvenient, I didn't lose any money or orders, so I don't really feel that I'm owed compensation. But, if I buy anything at full price, I will feel stupid too, because I will be paying $200 more than someone who lives near a B&M store and happens say the right thing to a store manager.

P.S. I'm not criticizing anyone who took advantage of the 20% offer. We Aficiondas have been through a lot in the last month!

  99. Okay, all these posts have inspired me to purchase the dream tie cardigan for myself. I got it in the eggplant color. I wear a size XL so I hope it fits across my large chest and in the shoulders, I pan to wear a cami underneath it, as I live in the hot desert of Arizona and that will be plenty warm enough for the winter.

Thanks to this blog I also got free shipping. And, I shopped through ebates.com so I will get 2% back in cash. Whee! If anyone wants a referral, let me know, so you can get a $5 start-up bonus.

  100. cass and others-I have been "victim" or "beneficiary" of the secret sale before as well. It's exactly as you say, I joked with a PS once, "ooo, what's the password to get the secret, do you have to say something? wear jcrew?!" She didn't like that one bit! I just couldn't help myself. Now that I am onto the secret, I ask all the time, lol. Sometimes they give me a run around and not a straight answer, they love to say NO, when it's yes. At least in my stores. I am a price sensitive shopper but as Alexis says, I would buy more with a promo, so it behooves them to tell me, ie. the lily cardigan, I have 4 (!!!), all bought NOT at full price but once on promo, bam! I just think the whole process of some people knowing, some people not knowing is really nuts, but it makes us up for the chase, I guess! Just like this "golden ticket"

  102. Uhhhhh, I really need to vent.
I live three hours away from a JCrew store (Seattle) and so I don't get up there very often. I've spent the past week going through all the online sale section, saving things I wanted to look for in the store to try on. When i got there today they had remodelled the store with no sale section! When I asked about it they said that Jcrew stores no longer have sale sections!! Is this a new thing that Jcrew is going to start doing or was this sales lady out of her mind?

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm so frustrated with jcrew's inconsistency in their policy. Why can't we all get the deserved discount without having to ask and push? Why do some CS can some honor the extra discount while other CS just refuse to do it? Now everytime I place an order I worry if I'm not getting the best deal because either I didn't call in to ask for a discount or because I didn't push hard enough. How frustrating.
Jcrew 's inconsistent policy sometimes work for us, sometimes against. But I would rather know that if I'm buying a sweater from them, in paying the same as every other buyer. I'm seriously considering writing a letter to them and ask them to look into this problem.

Cass, interesting comments. I guess I am becoming one-note about this but I am so angry that I am being treated differently than other customers that I don't see myself making any full price purchases for a while. Fortunately it's so warm here I won't need that tie-front cardigan for a few months.

hilarious post and soooo true. I feel like that most of the times when I shop in my local stores. The logic of all this definitely escapes me. I do hope Mr Drexler's entouarge reads this blog and will take our comments into consideration. Begging for coupons is ridiculous. Is this some kind of " little people" syndrome? Are SAs feeling empowered by ability to bestow or not bestow the favors? I don't get it.

  111. I totally agree about the unfairness in the discounts. I know this is totally ridiculous, as I received the card, but a perfect example is the uptown tote post from Saturday night. I have been dying for the lemon/lime ot the navy/orange, so was thrilled when someone said they were honoring the 69.99 price on all colors. I called within ten minutes of that post and was practically laughed at. However, that was really greedy of me, so I kind of thought I deserved it!
I do know that my store will do just about anything for their customers, but it is a much smaller store.

  113. Has anyone purchased the Andrea jacket? I am wondering how long the sleeves are supposed to be. Mine don't come to my hands (which they are not supposed to anyway) but they also don't look to be bracelet length as in the picture. Do these run true to size? I feel as if I may need to downsize to a Petite, but am not sure. Also, what color are people getting? Sorry so many questions, but I want to make a decision so that I can exchange if need be. THANKS!!

  114. jcrewMama, slastena & jenn_brak: I totally agree with all of you! My store is also a small one and they get to know their customers very well. I feel so offended and angry that I am just NOW learning of "secret sales" and the 20% off card. I shouldn't have to ASK. They should offer that information to me HAPPILY.

I didn't ask them about the card yet. However, they are holding a Tuesday trench for me to pick up tomorrow. If they don't offer me the card, I will not buy anything.

This is a store that often refers to me as one of their "top customers". I shop at Jcrew almost exclusively. They know I spend a ton of money there, so why not show me the same consideration that the next person may get?

Have they pegged me as a "full-price purchaser"? do they have a name for it or something??? After hearing all this, I feel that I will no longer be a sucker for fear of an item selling out...I'm now adopting a new mantra: WHO CARES!

And,I called CS about the 20% off, they only honored it on one item. I'm just so sick of CS's whim and who I happen to get on the phone.

Sorry so long I'm just so frustrated and need to vent.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Thanks again to jenn_brak who let us know about the coupon. Looks like none of us would have found out about it at the rate the stores are going.

pink1, nicole, q & All - I don't think they are going to offer the 20% coupon flat out in the stores, or over the phone for that matter. I think you have to request it. I went to San Fran today and tried on some items. When I got to the register I asked for the coupon. The SA seemed to have heard a rumbling about it, but it was clear that she didn't know the details. I paid while someone went on a hunt for them. At the end of the transaction a SA or mgr came out of the backroom with the cards. They were wrapped in plastic. So I dunno if they were on the 2nd batch or if I was the 1st one to get A Golden Ticket.

Because I am anal but can't remember if someone posted, here are the specifics on the card. It measures 5x6. Think Lexington blazer, but reverse the colors. Instead of a dark main color w/white inset perimeter, the primary color is a creme with a brown inset perimeter.

It gives the apology...We've made some mistakes...yadda yadda.

Please accept our apologies and enjoy 20% off your next purchase with us* Then there is a barcode below that. The asterisk is explained as followed: Offer valid in J. Crew retail stores only. Not valid at jcrew.com, over the phone or in J. Crew Factory stores. Offer expires 8/14/08. Not valid on previous purchases or on the purchase of gift cards or in combination with any other promotion.

hexicon - I think you should just call and ask for the discount. I don't think it matters if you have been directly inconvenienced or not. The website alone is enough of a pain, without having an order lost on top of it. I encourage you to just go for it and ask. And if they say no, ask to speak to a manager.

  118. Vivian - Sorry your Tartines are missing. That's awful. I have the baird mcnutt in flax and I am thrilled with it. I love the texture and color. I was concerned that it would be too boxy for my shape, but it's not. Definitely an excellent bargain.

All -- regarding the different pricing -- I really, REALLY wonder what is going to happen with that. If someone gets upset enough, they will file a lawsuit. It's interesting how cell phone providers can no longer charge early termination fees. Also my fitness gym had a suit filed against them and lost. Apparently there was a discrepancy between people who were charged for automatic debits vs. people who mailed their payment in. I don't have any plans to file anything, but I can certainly see how angering it is to think that some people are offered a secret sale. That's insulting. Then we have the different prices online vs. in-store...

    Very interesting.

  119. slastena: Thanks! That's right, no more sucker here! No sir! ;)

Alexis: I will repeat what I know you hear all the time but Thank you so much for giving us this forum to remain educated J crew shoppers. You are doing a phenomenal job. Not only are you going through a move and dealing with everyday life, but you still manage to have not one, but several topics posted here EVERY day! Impressive!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I have to say, I didn't even know J.Crew had "secret" sales! What the bad bear. I've been shopping there for years and I've never known about a sale price on items before. That makes me feel like a second-rate customer, that I don't even get to know about the good stuff to bring me in the store. :)

Also, to the person who posted about J.Crew stores having no more sale sections: how can they do that? Will they just ship everything back to the warehouses once it's supposed to get marked down? Is that even possible?

    ReplyDelete
  121. Also, I guess I should add that I sometimes do feel second-rate since people post stories about calling J.Crew CS and get free shipping or discounts off without ever asking. Not to sound sour grape-ish, but I am always polite and yet have never had anything offered to me, in that respect. I almost feel like there is a big red note on my account: No special deals for this lady!

    ReplyDelete
  122. melanie: I'm sure I sound sour-grape-ish, but that's because I DO have sour grapes. I have also been very polite and kind so I wonder if that's part of our problem? I know what you mean about that stamp in our account. I think mine reads: SUCKER...

    ReplyDelete
  123. FFM: Thanks for the gorgeous polyvore set! It's so chic. You've inspired me to buy the silk jersey pleated top. Seriously, J.Crew should so pay you commission!

The top is perfect and versatile. I agree the cardigan looks best with a sleeveless top.

gigiofca: Glad to hear you like your Baird McNutt jacket in flax! Do you have the skirt?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Melanie - I don't think you sound like sour grapes at all. I am surprised but don't feel hurt, per se because I have yet to rack up years as a steady customer. I would definitely feel awful if I found this out about BR as I have been a customer of theirs for some time and purchase quite a bit each year.

Alexis -- Yes, you are a blog darling and we appreciate you so much.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Melanie and Sally - You know, I don't really complain either. However, I do commiserate. I worked retail through college and always am sure to give a reassuring comment to the SAs to let them know I have been in their shoes. Not sure if this makes a difference, but I do know that every conversation I have had with a J Crew employee over the last two weeks has included my feeling sorry for them and the situation. Not to get anything, but because I truly do, and with what they have experienced, I thought it would be imortant for someone to say that to them. Retail can be very wearing!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Glad you found the pricing info interesting... Alexis, this blog has been a really fun outlet for my retail addiction and lately educational as a way to observe the effects of pricing/promotion on customer relationship management!

As we discussed in my class, non-standardized pricing creates a serious risk of alienating customers when so much info is out there, i.e. over the internet.

    J. Crew should adopt some standardized policies that will encourage customer loyalty without angering other customers. For example, they could openly offer a discount *if* you use a J. Crew card, or *if* you spend a certain amount over a certain period of time. This way everyone would have the opportunity to earn the promotions while making sure the company is getting a benefit in return.

    ReplyDelete
  127. gigofca and sally: Thanks for commiserating with me!

jenn_brak: Thanks for the comment. :) I know what you mean about taking the time to give the SA's a reassuring comment. I do that and also thank them and smile during every interaction. I try to make sure I make their job as easy as possible, so it is sometimes frustrating that if I were to do the exact opposite or be more demanding, perhaps I would get some of these sweet goodies everyone else seems to get. I guess it's true that being nice really is its own reward. Too bad, because I still think it sucks, no matter how much I tell myself that! :)

  129. jen_brak--good article. I had heard about catalogs charging different prices based on the area of the country to which they were sent. I think that's what the "source codes" on the back are for...so when you call in to order they know which prices to charge you.

  130. Does anyone happen to know how the Abby jacket item #90878 fits? I'd like to buy it and its a final sale. I usually wear a small in sweaters and between a 2 and 4 in jackets. Should I get a 2 or 4? Thx.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Great article, Jenn_brak. I hate to think about what my cookies and browser would say about my jcrew.com addiction.

So let's cue some Alannis: Isn't it ironic? The more we protest that we are loyal customers, that we visit the store weekly, the site daily, that we spend $X thousand dollars per year--the more J.Crew knows it can charge us. They know they have our business.

P.S. Anonymous @ 12:59, I am between sizes and had been advised to size down on the Abby. But, when I ordered it, I panicked, and I selected the larger size, figuring it is easier to take it in than squeeze into a final sale item that is too small. UPS says it will arrive tomorrow, so if you can wait 24 hours I can report back.

  133. Hello all,

I am checking out the Mini Seersucker Belted Jacket in pewter--I like the shape of this and think it might look cute with jeans or navy pants with many yellow underneath.

Anyone seen or have any thoughts on this jacket? What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  134. jcrewjunkie: I purchased the Andrea Jacket in Honey Glaze and it really does work well with my coloring, even though my hair is blonde. :) I think both colors are very pretty, but chose the Honey Glaze, as I think it is very decadent and "old money" looking. The sleeves on my jacket are not bracelet sleeves, although the description says they should be. If I do keep the jacket, I plan to have them shortened to bracelet length, instead of going through the hassle of trying a petite. I like the overall fit of the regular size, it's just the sleeves that aren't as pictured in the catalog. :)

  136. I'd like to chime in about the inconsistencies in policies that May and others have mentioned: as you know, I have often had good luck with the CS reps I have spoken to, and usually tend to get pretty good deals. However...I also DO get reps that aren't accomodating, so I choose NOT to make the purchase and hang up. I then call back and speak to another rep for a second try, and it usually works out. I would rather have to "try again" and have a good shot at getting the deal, than to complain to Mickey or J.Crew about the inconsistent policies and not have ANY chance at all for an extra bit of a deal. It's quite possible and really probable that if the complaints come in, the new "consistency" of policy will actually hurt everyone, just like numerous changes that took place after we discussed our "secrets" on this blog. I just think it's better to have a chance at getting a deal than to complain and not have a chance at all. It doesn't always work out for me...for example when I called the other morning on the belt, the rep gave me a super hard time about the extra30 discount, and then refused to give me the educator on top of it, stating that it's policy NOT to combine discounts. I didn't pitch a fit, because it's one time every now and then that this occurs, and I don't want to make it so the reps NEVER combine codes anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  137. One more thing...the other night I called to order another pair of the Cropped Chinos in White and got a really GRUMPY rep named Max, who acted "put out" just merely having to take my order. I was still very nice...asked for the Extra30, to which he acted pissed off, but agreed to give it. I also mentioned that I am allowed free shipping due to website fiasco and he can access my order # to see the notation, to which he DID NOT. He placed the order and I asked the total to which he told me...he had charged me for shipping without even telling me he was doing it. I immediately told him to cancel the order, which he did, and sounding pissed off AGAIN said he was transferring me to a CS rep. She then took my order...gave me the Extra30 PLUS my educator PLUS free shipping, so I ordered the Serengeti Capri Sandals, too. This is really an example that it depends on the rep, and you have to be willing to not place the order if you don't get the deal you want.

  138. vivian: The heather silver dream tie sweater will work with the Cord Skirt in Honey Glaze. I made you two sets as examples: Click Here , and Here . :)

  139. It seems that if they have the capablility to track cookies and price adjust according to dempographic location, then J.Crew should figure out a way to automatically give Free Shipping to customers NOT near a store based on their zipcode when they check out. I'm sure they wouldn't email them to individuals who SHOULD get them, knowing that they are shared with everyone, but this way the customers such as Hexicon, jcrewjunkie, and jcrewmama who don't have a store near by could order risk free. Blumre: can you add that to the Shipping email from all of us?

    ReplyDelete
  140. I understand when people prefer to have the option of calling in and having the opportunity to get the discounts rather than asking jcrew to standardize their policies. However, I still think that policies should be standardize and consistent so that it doesn't discriminate buyers. I would prefer to know that if I decided to place an item I like and paid shipping for it, I don't feel like a fool only because I didn't ask for free shipping or didn't go thru the hassle of trying to talk to a different CS.
I have to admit that getting something extra from the CS is nice. However, everyone that happens, I think about all those customers who don't know any better and pay whatever is asked for without asking for any benefits. It is really not fair to them. And I believe those people are in the majority. I'm sure if they knew they could get free shipping or discounts by pushing a bit harder, except they are completely unaware if the situation.

  142. Hey guys,

Dumb q. and someone probably already answered this but can the 20% be combined with the Ed. discount? Sorry to be repetitive just a little short on time and there are 141 posts to get through. Thanks so much in advance and sorry to pester you all.

    ReplyDelete
  143. anon @9:25: I can understand where you are coming from, but you must realize that anyone and everyone purchasing on the web has the opportunity to search for coupon codes and information BEFORE purchasing from a website, and I think that shoppers willing to go the extra mile by researching or calling to inquire about discounts deserve to be rewarded. I personally call because I like to now get the educator discount applied BEFORE my purchase is made, instead of waiting on a price adjustment because those take FOREVER to receive now.

Everyone purchasing online has the opportunity at this point to get the deals that other shoppers are getting...even at J.Crew...it just takes a little extra effort, as does anything good in life, and standardizing will take away the opportunity for those willing to make the effort to get a deal.

    ReplyDelete
  144. FFM: I also call in to place my orders so I can get the discount. It would be nice and easy if they could streamline it and get our account to reflect it online so that we could use it online too and not have to bog down their call center.

    ReplyDelete
  145. That last line should read: "standardizing could take away the opportunity for those willing to make the effort, to possibly get the deal that is already available to everyone (if they make the effort). I am afraid that the standardization will end up affecting us all in a negative way, as opposed to now when it is still possible to have exceptions made.

    ReplyDelete
  146. blumre: I already filled out a feedback form last month suggesting that the Educator and Student Discounts be tied into our online purchasing profile so that the discount is reflected when we check out...haven't heard anything back on it. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  147. FFM: I am afraid of that too... but if they are smart they will listen to us and make their policies more customer friendly. Jcrew prides itself on service, I think they will do their best to help us out and make sure that we still keep going back for more.

    ReplyDelete
  148. ffm and blumre: I too call to get the educator's discount, but it would be nice if there was a place to input a code so that the call wasn't necessary. At Ann Taylor Loft, there is a teacher's code that automatically deducts 20% off ALL prices and charges no shipping. I use it often. I go to the store and try clothes on, and then I come home and order it. As long as I don't need it right away, it's worth it for the 20% off. It would be nice if J Crew allowed for multiple codes, so that they could do this for teachers as well. As long as our email address was on file so they could check our status, it would be easier for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  149. ffm: Great idea to have our info automatically show our discount! :)

    ReplyDelete
  150. Blumre: Not sure if someone answered your question about 20% coupon card and the educator's discount.

The card says it cannot be used with any other promotions. But the educator's discount is more of a policy.

I am sure if you ask for both (and use the example of being allowed to use the educator's discount during the "additional % off" promotions) they may give you both. :)

    ReplyDelete
  151. Alexis: thanks well hmmm.... that would make the Ecole much more affordable!!! And it would make the Penelope ballet flats almost reasonable (almost). I shall have to consider that.

Can't someone restrain me until September? I think someone should tie my hands behind my back so I can't order, I want to save my gift cards! :( And it is so hard to resist.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Consistency would be great if they would:

1)ALWAYS allow the educator/student discount on an order no matter whether full price or sale, and also on orders with other discounts already being applied

2)ALWAYS allow coupon codes and discounts to be stacked...well, at least 2 of them like the 4 stores and Victoria's Secret do.

3)ALWAYS allow price match on store and online merchandise

4)ALWAYS allow free shipping from the red phone for sale items if a full price item is also purchased

5)ALWAYS allow customers in zip codes that are not within an hour of a b&m to get FREE SHIPPING and IN STORE sale promos

6)ALWAYS make the in store and online sales in conjunction with each other, so that web only customers do NOT get cheated on deals that are in store only

    ReplyDelete
  153. blumre and ffm: I'd like to add that if they were to start enforcing all these things ffm mentioned and give out more coupons, etc, then I believe people would be returning items MUCH LESS. I know I would be less likely to return things I feel I got a good price on and I also would not want to "waste" or "miss out on" the coupon I had used.

blumre, you might include this point in the big e-mail.

    ReplyDelete
  154. FFM, I am going to agree and disagree with you.

I agree that insistence on consistency means there is a big risk that policies could be standardized *down* to the least customer-friendly approach. And I also agree that it's up to smart buyers to undertake some due diligence before placing an order, such as checking around for the best coupon deal. And I think everyone on this blog would agree that you are entitled to some special treatment after what happened with your orders.

But I think it's not reasonable to expect a customer to read dozens of blog posts, check web and store pricing, and then place calls to multiple CSRs (potentially spending hours on hold) to get an adjustment or to stack codes. I'm still really ticked because I had to fight with multiple CSRs about a price adjustment on the super 120s dress when other Aficionadas were customers were given the adjustment right over the phone on the first call. I'm articulate and reasonable--so why did I get the runaround while everyone else got lucky the first try? Given the amount of hold time needed to reach a CSR, it's more than just a little "extra effort" to get the discount.

Am I a sucker for not calling up to insist on the 20% discount? If the purpose is to make amends to those who lost money or orders during the update, I don't meet those criteria. I would feel dishonest demanding it. (That's not a criticism of those who are bolder and went for it!)

If the purpose is to offer goodies to whomever the store manager thinks are the "right" people, then I will never know, because I can't get to a store.

OK. . . deep breath . . . I better give it a rest now. I am going to dump all the stuff out of my shopping bag and wait until J.Crew does something for web customers.

P.S. FFM did you see the eggplant tie cardigan when you bought yours? Any comments on color?

    ReplyDelete
  155. P.S., FFM, just saw your 10:11--now that I can agree with 100%! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hi Hexicon!: Just to clarify...my comments about taking a little extra effort to call in are based on pre-upgrade wait times, and not those we have experienced in the past 5 weeks...that has been a LOT of extra effort. ;) Did you happen to see my post about making the consistent policies? I think you would probably agree on most of them.

As for the tie front cardigan...my store only had Navy, the Honey Glaze, and the Heather Silver...I really wasn't even aware of the other colors until I looked at it online...my store doesn't get the really "good" stuff I want, so I am often in the same situation as web only customers when it comes to ordering, and that is why I often search out codes before placing my order or call in and ask for the in store deals. :)

    ReplyDelete
  157. Hexicon: you did see them...good...I thought you would agree. I am all for consistency as long as it BENEFITS all of us, as opposed to affecting us all negatively. :)

    ReplyDelete
  158. Sally Consider your comments included!

    ReplyDelete
  159. sally: I think that if J.Crew were to make the 6 things I mentioned 100% Policy for EVERY CUSTOMER each and EVERY time they made a purchase, then their customer base would become larger, and they would quite possibly be the best clothing retailer in the world to shop at right now. :)

blumre: Maybe you could add my list to the email?

    ReplyDelete
  160. FFM: I am two steps ahead of you... I already added it to my list of things to include tonight! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  161. hexicon: I agree with your views on the need for a standardized policy so we don't have to feel forced to go that extra mile!

Ffm: I just read the suggestions you have for a standardized policy. Love them! I truly believe that companies can make so much money if shipping fees for example is waived consistently at a specific amount spent, for example. I have found myself ordering so much more when the offer free shipping or additional discounts! I really don't think jcrew would end up losing money!

    ReplyDelete
  162. Thanks anon@11:43: I think that if they were to implement those benefits that some of us HAVE been able to get on a FULL TIME/EVERY CUSTOMER basis, it would make the shopping experience much more pleasureable for EVERYONE. It really is time consuming TO have to put in the extra effort to get the deal, and it would be nice to just call up the first time and know that everything was going to be implented the way you are asking it to be. :)

  163. I just got back from my b&m and the 1st thing I can say is that some of the sa's knew about the card and some did not. They couldn't find it and first but told me they would honor it anyway, but then someone found one. So, I tried some things on (I do not like the belle skirt on me and the garden skirt looks like it would require lots of ironing and then look wrinkled 5 minutes later. Not for me.) I did like the denim pencil skirt, but would probably need to size down. I bought the ruffle henley tissue tee, which I LOVE! But, then I love ruffles. :) The sa said they were flying out the store, and most of the smaller sizes were gone in all colors. I also got a tank in rhubarb to wear with my tartine in same color. I also ordered the chocolate cord pencil skirt and they honored the 20% over the red phone, although the sa told me later that they shouldn't have (I think his manager told him that, but they'd already agreed to it). I would have bought more, but just can't. I asked about the argyle vest, and he thought that the vee might come down to my belly button since I'm short and short waisted. I will wait and see if my b&m gets this in so I can try it on.

blumre: I was allowed to use the 20% plus my teacher's discount both in store and over the red phone. :) I also LOVE the penelope flats but cannot warrant paying that much for shoes, even with the 2 discounts. The sa told me that he thought they would go on sale within 1-2 months, although since they're not selling well in store, it could be sooner (just his opinion). He thinks things go on sale or promotion soon if they aren't selling well, but he's never had anyone in "authority" tell him that.

    Sorry for the long post.

One more thing, I was allowed to keep my card to use again until it expires on the 14th. I wish I got paid before that, but it's probably a good thing that I don't! :P

    ReplyDelete
  164. ffm: I LOVE your suggestions. Should they be included in the email that blumre is putting together?

    ReplyDelete
  165. ffm: oops! Ignore my last post, I just saw where you asked to have it included. :)

    ReplyDelete
  166. Math teacher: THANKS for all that incredible information! I will wait on the Penelope flats now! Those morons that go into the store don't know good style when it hits them in the face! Then again I wouldn't pay full price for that either so maybe they aren't morons. (Note I only like the flats in black and silver... not the other colors).

You're awesome. Thanks for all the reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  167. blumre: That's the color I want, too. Maybe it's because it's still so hot, it's just hard to think about buying anything that's not a sandal. Since my b&m is downtown, I don't get there as often after school starts. But, my sa told me to call and check to see if they've gone on sale. When I find out, I'll let you know. I told him I was desperate for them, but I just couldn't pay that kind of money. (Unless I get lots of b-day money next month! :P)

    ReplyDelete
  168. One more thing: my b&m was till offering the extra 40% off sale. Of course, there wasn't much left. Some white jeans and few tees, tanks, and flip flops. They did have a lot of girl crewcut items - tees, shorts, dresses, and sweaters.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I need advice! I am going to my b&m today because they are holding a Tuesday Trench for me. I had said here that I wouldn't buy it if they don't give me the 20% off. So, should I call them first and ask if they got those coupon cards and relieve myself of a little bit of embarrassment if they did not. OR, should I just go in (having more leverage since I am about to purchase a few things) and ask about it in person, risking a great deal of embarrassment if I have to end up walking out with nothing because of a coupon?????

Keep in mind mine is a VERY SMALL store and ALL the employees know me VERY well. I've even become friends with some.

    Any thoughts???????

  178. FFM: Thanks! Also, how swingy is the pleated sleeveless top? Im a pear shape and sometimes (if they are too swingy, with too much material) these tops just add pounds to my midrift rather than reduce! Thanks in advance for the advice....J

  179. I called in my order and managed to get the 20% - after CS called my store to verify. I asked for the teacher's discount and was told that CS has been told "not to do that anymore." I did manage to wrangle free shipping but that was after I said I was going to cancel the order if there's no free shipping. Ha!

To get the teacher's discount, I called again and got another assoc who did not have problems applying the discount for me. Wish I don't have to jump through hoops this way. FFM: You have to send them your suggestions!

FFM, math teacher, aly: You inspired me to order the silk jersey pleated tops and the tissue tee ruffled henleys!

    ReplyDelete
  180. vivian: I hope you like the ruffle henley. I know how much we both love ruffles! :P I was worried that they would be too much with my larger chest, but they laid pretty flat. Which color(s) did you get? I got the plum - love that color! Btw, congrats on getting the 20% and the 15%. Neither the sa in store or the cs on the red phone seemed to have any problems giving both. It really is crazy that it just depends on who you get.

  181. math teacher: I got the plum too! It's such a pretty color. I also got the dark slate but I'll have to see if it looks good on me. I was thinking white too but maybe it may be more see-through. I didn't see this item at the store over the weekend. It buttons up nicely, right? Sometimes J.Crew's V-necks are too low cut for me.

  182. math teacher: Did you get your cashmere argyle vest? I'm so tempted, especially after viewing your fabulous polyvore set. I'm so tempted but am trying to lay off cashmere for a while and focus on machine-washable pieces...plus I think I overspent this month -- thanks to this blog :)

  183. vivian: I tried on the white and it is see through. It does button nicely, although I really like it unbuttoned and layered over a tank. (That's how they display it in store.) They didn't have the vest and when I showed the same cut in the sweater, my sa thought the vee might come down to my belly button b/c I'm short and short waisted. So, I'm going to wait and see if they get it in store. The sa said that they get new items every week. While I haven't spent a whole lot there this month, I've had other expenses, so I need to wait until the end of the month or next month (or b-day money!). I really like the vest so I'm going to be SO disappointed if it doesn't work on me.

  184. math teacher: Hope the vest works for you. I'm 5' 4" and I didn't have any problems with the length when I tried it in the store.

Remember the silk-linen tie cardigan? It arrived yesterday and I'm returning it. I look terrible in it. On hindsight (after receiving one of my Tartines), I also plan to return the linen ruffle cardigan that I purchased at full price. The drape isn't as flattering as I thought it was. So it's going back too.

  185. math teacher: I'm glad I didn't get the white ruffled tissue henley. One reason why in-store shopping is always safer!

  186. anon@1.16pm: My dream tie cardigan (heather silver) doesn't feel itchy at all. I'll wear it with sleeveless tops, so it'd better not be itchy!

I agree with FFM: it's not as soft as cashmere.

  187. J: Ok...I have tried the Dream Tie Cardigan on again, and while it is not as soft as the Jackie Cardigan, I do not find it itchy, personally. As far as the pleated tops...they are not overly "swingy" at all...it can easily be worn under the dream tie cardi without excess bulk, and also tucked into pants or a skirt easily, as well. I am also wearing mine with a skinny belt at the waist and then sort of bloused (is that even a word) over the top of the belt...that gives definition to the waist, but still allows you to wear the shirt untucked for more coverage lengthwise. :)

  188. vivian: I'm 5'4" too, so maybe the vest will work! :) That would make me so happy as I love it. I would still like to try it on and wait for a markdown. Did the vee come as low on you as it is on the model? It is nice to try on items. I hate to long after an item only to find out that I hate it on! So, I like to try on lots while I'm in the store. I meant to try on the dream tie cardigan and remembered as I was leaving and I didn't want to head to the dressing room again. Maybe next time - I really do need to make a list! :P

  189. On a previous visit, I tried on the gathered tee, which is drapey like the pleated shell. I even sized down b/c it looked so big. It did not look good on me and I couldn't have worn another size smaller. I just think it depends on our frames as to whether we can wear these types of tops. I think they're so cute and so comfortable, but they're not for me. Yet, I continue to try different types on. You'd think I'd have learned by now. :P

  190. FFM: Just saw your question about the pleated tops. I got it in black, white, bright rhubarb and weathered stone. It's so versatile, as you show in your polyvore sets.

And thanks for the sets with the cord skirt in honey glaze! I love them! If only fall gets here sooner. It's still so freaking hot.

  191. math teacher: The vee came down only slightly longer than shown on the model. So it looked fine. I was wondering about that when I came back and revisited the page. If you see a markdown, could you please post? I already own an ivory shirt :)

The dream tie cardigan is just fabulous - I just love the shape and I might get it in another color.

  192. vivian: I sure will post if I see it marked down. :) And, thanks for the fit reviews. I'm extremely hopeful now.

OT, my sa said that the factory stores are receiving their fall merch as well and that he knew that they had some bellas from last year. He encouraged me to call and check, but I have to wait at least 2 more weeks before I can spend more money. So, for those looking for a bella, call a factory store. :)

  193. vivian: I'm sorry that your other sweaters didn't work, but maybe now you can keep all of your tartines (once they come, of course). :P I LOVE my tartine and hope they still have some in my size when it goes on sale.

  195. math teacher: Me too! I might return one or two of my less favored colors in the Tartine and pray that they'd be available during a sale.

I did find Bellas in my size at factory outlet stores, but they tell me the colors are different although the cut is the same. Any suggestions?

  197. Does this sound right?

The herringbone is $178 and the velvet (she also called it corduroy) is $89 plus 25% off. Shipping is $12.50.
